Long’s last day at Solanco High School will be Friday, Jan. 23. “Dr. Long has led from a place of humbleness and humility, and these traits have had such an important impact on Solanco High School,” Solanco School District superintendent Brian Bliss said. “From his first day here until now, he has so clearly been driven by a belief in the potential of each child. Feats of Clay BY GEORGE DEIBEL
Emily Smucker-Beidler said that she doesn’t know if she prefers teaching art or being an artist. The West Hempfield Township resident will be able to do both during the hands-on Redware Ornaments Workshop, which will be held Saturday, Jan. 17, from 9 a.m. to noon in the Mennonite Life Community Room, 2215 Millstream Road, L ancaster. The event is for people 13 years old and up. There is a fee to participate; Mennonite Life members receive a discount on tickets. The cost of materials is included. Anyone who wishes to take part must register at https://mennonite life.org/events by Thursday, Jan. 15. Guests will make their own redware ornaments that they can pick up at Mennonite Life four weeks after the activity. “Redware refers to the kind of clay which was used by the early American potters,” SmuckerBeidler said. “Many of them were farmers, and they would find a vein of clay in their field. The legend is that they would walk around the field, and wherever it didn’t make a footprint they knew that there was clay underneath there. They’d dig up that clay and process it and make it into functional items. This was something that was brought over from Europe, but it’s a very early American craft. They needed functional items to use. They started making pottery, and the potters would make it and then sell it.” Smucker-Beidler explained how the process works. “In my workshops, everyone has a prepared slab of clay,” she said. “The slab has been rolled out, smoothed, painted with the white slip (which is watered-down clay), and gotten See Feats of Clay pg 3

In Lancaster County, firearms are the leading cause of suicide death among children. Nationally, they are the number one cause of pediatric death. without a doubt, that’s what I’ll miss the most.” Long noted that he is grateful for the support he has received from the school board, Bliss, and assistant superintendent Robert Dangler. “We have a great school board. Our school board is very stable,” Long said. “They’re consistent; they’re involved. It’s a very common thing for our school board to stop by and do tours and visit our teachers and students. ... I’m thankful for the leadership from Dr. Bliss, Dr. Dangler. It’s just a very authentic place to work.” Long is leaving with lots of wonderful memories. “I really appreciate my time here, and the years at Solanco have been the best of my professional career,” he said. “I’m just thankful for the time here.”

August 2012, working as a physical education and health teacher at Smith Middle School for three years. He was an assistant principal at Solanco High for four years before taking over as principal in 2020, guiding the school through the pandemic. Long doesn’t regret having to deal with trying times. “That was probably the most difficult year in my school administrative career, and I’m thankful I had it,” he said. “I wouldn’t change it. I’m glad I was in this role for that because it kind of molded me into the leader I am today.” Long lists several major accomplishments during his tenure as principal, giving the credit to faculty and staff. “I would say the first thing is the team we’ve assembled,” said Long. “I think we’ve hired really good people over the years. We’ve hired teachers who are caring, empathetic, compassionate. They really are student-centered. They care about their students. I think we have a really strong team of educators, so I pride myself in that.” Solanco High has also expanded its offerings and has added 10 AP courses. “We’ve expanded into some innovative ideas with our courses,” said Long. “We added a robotics course years ago. Next year we’re adding a course on drones where students become licensed to fly a commercial drone. It really speaks to the expertise on our staff. I’m really proud of the opportunity that we give kids. We really want to just have as many different options available and hope that kids experience something that gives them a glimpse into what they want to do after high school.” What he will miss most is the people he has worked alongside. “Not to sound too cliché, but I’ve been in this building for about 12 years now, and that means I’ve worked with a lot of people,” said Long, who also previously served as the head coach of Solanco’s varsity boys’ basketball team. “I’ve hired a lot of people, so I’ve been here with them for their entire careers. I’m at the point now where a lot of my students, I know their families because there were older siblings, so I’m connected to their families. That’s 12 years of relationships, and

there’s so many great things in this district that I’m happy to be a part of, I’m excited to serve kids on a wider scale,” he said. “I’ll still serve Solanco students, but I’ll also do it to serve students from all across the county. We have 16 districts that send their students to us (at LCCTC).” Long is planning to make his presence felt. “It is my goal to be around at every campus on a weekly basis, just trying to be visible and be seen,” he said. Long will hit the ground running. “(LCCTC) has been growing, and the need for skilled employees in the trades is growing,” he said. “Because of that, they’ve had a significant amount of increase in their applications. Some of their high demand programs have a significant wait list. We’re seeing kids apply to programs, they qualify, and we know they would do well, but they’re not getting in because there might be 100 applications for 24 seats, for example. So without a doubt, I think we have to find a way to increase our capacity, for sure. That’s probably on the forefront of my mind.” Long will be succeeded at Solanco High by Zac Bauermaster, who is currently the principal at Providence Elementary School. Originally from North East, Md., Long joined the Solanco School District in

They learned a skill and then became very successful. And to me that coincides with my mission. I want to have a positive impact on students, so I felt a calling to apply for the position. And, you know, throughout the interview process and the hiring process, it just became more evident that was where I was supposed to be.” He is excited for the opportunity to reach more students. “As sad as I am to leave (Solanco) because

Ever ybody deser ves a place to call their own. Everybody needs a home. S e r va n t S t a g e ’s n e w home is also the nonprofit’s first. Not only are Servant Stage’s new digs a product of growth, the location is also a space where it can continue to grow. “It’s almost hard to put into words,” said Johnathan Bauer, the founder and executive director of Servant Stage. “It hits every once in a while. This is a home. Like, ‘Wow, this is for real.’ It hasn’t fully sunk in yet. There are a lot of firsts in this place that are really special.” Following 12 years of s e r v i n g t h e L a nc a s te r County community through theater and the performing arts, Servant Stage moved into its new headquarters at 1842 William Penn Way, Lancaster, in East Lampeter Township in October. Up until that point, Servant Stage had been doing the best it could with what it had, while the mission around it was flourishing. “It’s so nice to have our own space,” said Bauer. “It’s fun ever y day. It’s nice to be able to have a conversation and not have to reply to an email. Having no space for so many years, you get used to it. A lot of it was working from home. We were storing sets and props in
basements, garages and barns. Efficiency is a huge part of what we do. We were doing so many shows that it wasn’t sustainable.” S e r va n t S t a g e ’s n e w home base is eight rooms and 8,500 square feet in size, 5,000 of which is dedicated to a workshop, warehouse and storage space and 3,500 of which is being used as offices and for conferences and meetings. The space can also accommodate smaller auditions and rehearsals fo r t h e m o re t h a n 1 5 productions and 190 performances that the organization has been staging each year. “We have been looking and actively explor ing spaces for a workshop and theater for like six or seven years now,” said Bauer. “Back in May, we came across this place in Greenfield, and our Realtor connected us with the landlord. We knew from the very first visit that it checked all of the boxes. The lease was signed in a month or so. This kind of fell into our lap.” Prior to its recent move, Servant Stage was practicing and rehearsing for performances at Lancaster Alliance Church, at 210 Pitney Road, Lancaster, not far from its new home. Depending upon the demands of each production, some of those rehearsals will continue to be conducted at the See Stage pg 7
Stage from pg 6 church. “ The focus of the mission is on ser vice,” said Bauer, a resident of Strasburg. “ The idea of using the performing arts and theater to serve the community, that’s been the mission from the very beginning and that’s why we chose that name. We love theater and the community, and there’s both a why and a how behind it.” “ With our mission of bringing shows into the community, we’ve been n o m a d i c ,” c o n t i n u e d Bauer. “Everyone on the team is very flexible and good at problem-solving. We’ve been able to make i t g ro w s o m u c h , b u t we’ve grown so much. The amount of programming we’re doing is growing, and our staff is growing. You need a space for it. It’s definitely long overdue.” Servant Stage is projecting to present 20 productions for both adults and youths with more than 220 total performances in 2026. T he traveling troupe’s performances will be staged at high schools, churches and retirement communities across Lancaster County. “When you factor in all the rehearsals, it’s a lot,” said Bauer. “It’s people wanting to be a part of it. We’ve seen 300 people at auditions for performances that have had 150 spots. That’s why we keep adding productions. We keep getting requests for performances. There are cer tainly plenty of challenges, but we haven’t gotten to a place where we’ve had to cut back on shows because we don’t have performing places.” “(Operating our own theater) is definitely a dream as well,” added Bauer. “We would love to have a theater to do these shows. It’s still a dream down the road that would make more performances possible, but it’s one step at a time.” Servant Stage, which is funded through freewill offerings received at performances, business partnerships, sponsorships, individual donations and grant funding, is operated by seven full-time employees, six part-timers and a host of volunteers. We have two requirements: A child must sing in tune, and a child must show respect for ever y adult involved. That’s it.” Involvement with ACYS programs could instill a lifelong love of singing into matur ing youths. Proceed with caution. “They are children who already know they love singing and their parents are willing to suppor t them,” said Bair. “This is for kids and their families. It’s like the family is joining the organization together. These are people who want to invest in their children and get the type of high-quality music instr uction you can’t get anywhere else. You can see the quality in the things we do.”

(The children) can be who they authentically are. T he parents often form their own sub-group, like a club of parents.” Bair originally founded ACYS in Rochester, N.Y., in 1996. At the heights of its success, the program featured 140 singers and staged performances at numerous hig h-profile events. “We just sort of moved it here,” said Bair. “I’m really open to the opportunities here. We want to duplicate the joys of the stories, but the stories are going to be different here. These kids will be ver y much of the community, learning about it and being a par t of it.”
