Manyfire hazards remain dangerous year-round, but the winter season brings specific safety concerns and challenges for fire companies. As we attempt to keep our houses warm and well-lit during the frigid and darker winter months, several preventative and basic safety measures should be kept in mind to help reduce the risk of catastrophes occurring.
Of all the fire hazards that accompany the arrival of colder weather, space heaters are one of the most common fire starters and should be placed at a safe distance from any flammable items, such as beds, curtains and Christmas trees. Other methods of heating one’s home should also be utilized with care; when using a fireplace, only use natural wood. Plywood, treated wood and accelerants such as alcohol or gasoline should be kept out of the fireplace. In fact, putting anything other than the right wood into a fireplace could be dangerous.
Decorations such as stockings and Christmas trees should be kept away from the fireplace, and Christmas trees that are not regularly watered will become dry and turn into a hazard.
Stoves and ovens can also prove hazardous if left unattended. “The biggest thing is making sure that you turn things off when you don’t need them,” said

Uninspected chimneys may develop cracks that allow the fire to spread into other parts of the house through the walls. Furnaces should also be serviced regularly through a heating company to prevent malfunctions.
Another common fire hazard during the winter is overloaded circuits. Making sure that lights are turned off at night and that Christmas lights are not perpetually lit can make a residence much safer.

The modern world has evolved through the widespread use of new technology in a variety of ways; during the COVID-19 pandemic, schools and businesses heavily relied on technology to safely continue operating. Although the world is no longer in a state of emergency lockdown, organizations such as Junior Achievement of Southcentral Pennsylvania (JASCPA) have found that procedures adopted during the pandemic continue to prove themselves useful.

A large factor in avoiding fires is preventative care. Local fire companies recommend that those with chimneys have them cleaned and inspected at least once a year.
In addition to fire hazards, driving conditions play a large role in wintertime woes. Although modern cars are equipped with more safety measures than ever before, driving on icy or snow-laden roads can be dangerous if drivers do not exert caution. “We don’t get the crashes like we used to, but you still want to make sure you’re being careful when driving in the winter.” said Williams.

exhibit begins with the book of Genesis and follows the Bible’s timeline through the book of Revelation; replicas of tablets, statues, weapons and scrolls that reference the events of the Bible are placed in chronological order in the display. “Most people may be reading the Bible but may not know that there’s a lot of archaeology and discoveries that directly relate to it,” Meyers said.
Each replica refers to civilizations or events that existed at the same time as biblical characters if it does not refer to these characters directly. The beginning of the exhibit displays replicas of tablets that refer to the epic of Gilgamesh, the Great Flood and the Tower of Babel. Archaeological dis-
coveries made in Egypt populate the section of the exhibit that documents the book of Exodus, followed by replicas of artifacts from Israel, Assyria, Babylon, Persia and Greece in biblical times.

“The real artifacts are in museums around the world,” Meyers said. “I’ve made replicas and brought them together so that you don’t have to travel to the other side of the globe to see everything.” Meyers occasionally acquires replicas from other people, but more often he creates the replicas himself. He stays up to date on the latest news of archeological discoveries so that he can recreate them and add them to the exhibit. Each segment of the exhibit is also accompanied by informational pieces that detail how some of the artifacts were created or used. One such educational display shows how ancient peoples tanned leather and treated papyrus to fashion into scrolls.
In addition to the artifacts and informational displays, Bible History Exhibits is peppered with photographs that Meyers took himself while traveling through the Middle East. When he is not traveling to the ancient world, Meyers resides in Philadelphia, where he moved from Ohio to attend Westminster Theological Seminary. He opened Bible History Exhibits about eight years ago and stays in Lancaster while the museum is open.
Meyers has also written several booklets on various historical topics, which he sells online and at the exhibit. Almost every item in the exhibit is for sale, and the profits from their sales help to keep the exhibit open. Bible History Exhibits operates under The Institute for Biblical and Scientific Studies, a nonprofit organization.
Ladies’ Bible Study Posted
Faith Bible Chapel, 140 Bernard Ave., Cochranville, will host a weekly ladies’ Bible study on Wednesdays from 9:30 to 11 a.m. beginning Jan. 11. The 14-week program will focus on the book of Revelation.
The Bible study will be an informal discussion group, a time to get to know other women, and an opportunity to learn from God’s Word. Copies of the book may be purchased at the first meeting.

In 2021, JASCPA implemented JA Inspire, a virtual career fair that schools can utilize for their students. The program simulates a real career fair, replete with business representatives who provide details on what

it’s like to work for their companies and respective fields through the virtual platform. Upon signing into the application, students begin at the exterior of the career fair building accompanied by virtual students
and school buses. They can navigate the page to visit the interior lobby, where dozens of companies have set up their digital booths. “It looks like a real career fair lobby,” said Allison Kierce, chief operating officer of JASCPA. “Students can visit any of the booths they are interested in to learn more about the companies and fields they may want to study in college.”
Students participating in JA Inspire are provided with a virtual backpack that allows them to save videos, documents and any information provided by a booth that they want to keep for future reference. Students can log back into the fair at any time to review materials or visit more booths, and they can email specific questions to company representatives.

Prior to 2021, JA Inspire was a conventional career fair that was held in a physical location. Although schools resumed many in-person programs after the pandemic, many have opted to continue using virtual platforms such as the new iteration of JA Inspire.
“A lot of people wanted to get back to having in-person career fairs, but there are logistics to that,” said Kierce.
“Virtually hosting JA Inspire removes the need for schools to worry about
Refton REFIT Kickoff Slated
The Refton REFIT kickoff class will take place on Monday, Jan. 23, in the gym at Refton Brethren In Christ Church, 110 Church St., Refton. The class will run from 6:30 to 8 p.m. and is open to women and girls of all ages.
The positive aerobic fitness kickoff event is free and open to the public. In addition to an aerobics class, the event will include a photo both, fresh fruit, and giveaways.

B.R. Kreider & Son Inc., an excavating, paving and site management company based in Manheim, recently announced the asset purchase of H.L. Wiker Inc. Excavating in Lancaster.
The new team members will operate out of one of B.R. Kreider’s three locations in Manheim, Lebanon and Quarryville, according to Brent Kreider, president of B.R. Kreider & Son Inc.
H.L. Wiker has been serving customers in southcentral and eastern Pennsylvania, Delaware and northern Maryland since 1988. The company is led by second-generation owners Donna Shoff and Jeff Wiker. 4-H Horse Club Plans Meeting
The Spinnin’ Spurs 4-H Horse Club will hold an organizational meeting on Monday, Jan. 9, in the Multi-Purpose Room at the Farm and Home Center, 1383 Arcadia Road, Lancaster. The meeting will begin at 6:30 p.m. and will include discussion of plans for the year, a review of enrollment information, time for questions, and ice breaker activities. Youths need to bring a parent/legal guardian to the meeting.
The 4-H Horse Cloverbuds, open to children ages 5 to 7, will also meet at the same time and same location. Attendees will be provided with their own age-appropriate books and activities.
Open to members ages 8 to 18, the Spinnin’ Spurs 4-H Horse Club provides educational opportunities but does not provide horses or riding lessons. Owning a horse is not required.
