District Residents Invited To Mother-Son Night Of Fun By Dayna M. Reidenouer

By all accounts, the inaugural Mother-Son Night of Fun that was held in 2018 at Smith Middle School, 645 Kirkwood Pike, Quarryville, was a rousing success. “It was a full house,” said event cocoordinator Angie Schlagnhaufer. “They loved it.” “We had about 200 people,” added co-coordinator Trina Armstrong. Schlagnhaufer and Armstrong are planning for another strong turnout for this year’s Mother-Son Night of Fun, which will be held at the school on Saturday, Jan. 18, from 6 to 8 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 25, has been set as the snow makeup date. Boys in kindergarten through eighth grade who live in the Solanco School District and their mothers or adult female family figures are invited to attend the Night of Fun. Activities have

been planned to appeal to a variety of interests. Board and card games, as well as a Wii gaming system, will be set up in the school lobby. Minute to Win It games will be located in the hallway to the cafeteria, where a disc jockey will play music for dancing and refreshments will be available. The gymnasium will feature basketball, a lacrosse toss, four square, and mini bowling. Selfies to commemorate the occasion will be encouraged at a special photobooth. Based on last year’s event, the organizers have added more cornhole and Minute to Win It games, and the basketball games will be adjusted to make them accessible for younger students. Schlagnhaufer also noted that organizers are making an effort to encourage adult interaction with the children they accompany. “We want to get moms involved rather than chit-chatting with each other on the sidelines,” she said. There is a cost to attend the See Night Of Fun pg 3

Consignment Sale To Support Peru Mission Fund Calling All Painters! 84 S. Lime St., Quarryville, will offer the Wellness Initiative for Senior Education (WISE) Program from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. on Mondays from March 16 to April 20. The WISE Program is a wellness and prevention program for adults age 60 and older. Classes include a mixture of small group work, individual exercises, and discussion. Topics include factors that contribute to the aging process and how to live longer, happier, and healthier lives; what it means to age as a member of society and as an individual; exploring diversity and developing an appreciation of differences; medication misuse among older adults and how to avoid it; substance misuse and understanding the disease of addiction; and how people may improve and enhance their quality of life as they age. The program is free. To register, call 717-786-4770.

The one thing that stays the same at the annual Nuts ‘N’ Bolts Consignment Sale hosted by the mission team at Middle Octorara Presbyterian Church (MOPC) is that it is always different, and the organizers never know what to expect. Last year’s event featured items from 18 vendors. One woman donated her late husband’s tools, said Dan Henry, who organizes the sale with his wife, Boni Henry. “Folks have been encouraged to bring ‘nuts and bolts’ types of items that they no longer need and would like to sell,” Boni

explained, listing tools previously stored in sheds, garages, and basements; hunting clothes and supplies; yardwork and landscaping tools; small equipment; antiques; books; games; and puzzles as ideas of items to consign. Firearms will not be accepted. “This year, we are emphasizing collections such as baseball cards, old Sports Illustrated magazines, vintage jewelry, books, old toys, Hummel plates, coins, and a Park City pewter collection including a carousel,” she said. “I tell people I have no clue if (their item) will sell; just bring it and try it,” Dan added.

The Quarryville Library Art Committee annually hosts an art competition open to the public. This year, paintings will be the focus, and amateur and professional painters age 16 and older are invited to enter up to two artworks each, with an entry fee per painting. Cash prizes of $100 for first place and $50 for second place will be awarded in the categories of landscape, still life, and living things. The subject matter must be appropriate for public viewing in a gallery used for children’s programs. Every painting should be framed or mounted and ready for hanging with either wire or sawtooth hangers. The entries will be displayed in the C.X. Carlson Cultural Center at the library through Friday, Feb. 21. The artwork may be dropped off on Friday, Jan. 10, from 3 to 5:30 p.m. or on Saturday, Jan. 11, from noon to 4 p.m. The exhibit’s opening reception will be held on Saturday, Jan. 18, from 1 to 3 p.m., and the winners will be announced at 2 p.m. The artwork may be offered for sale, but every item must remain hanging through the end of the exhibit. For more information about the contest, readers may email library@quarryvillelibrary.org.
