Experience the same wholesome atmosphere filled with fellowship, food and friendly competition today that the founders of the Solanco Fair envisioned over 60 years ago. In the spring of 1950, a group of farm women enthusiastically decided that the Solanco area needed a fair of its own. With the help of many different community and agricultural-based organizations, in September of that same year, the first Solanco Fair made its debut and was here to stay.

The Solanco Fair is not only a vital part of the Southern End community; it reflects the spirit and values of the individuals living in the community. Dedicated citizens volunteer their time and many talents throughout the year to ensure a successful event. At the fair, they can be found diligently working to supervise the many behind-the-scenes details that make the event run like a well-oiled machine.

It is with deep appreciation that we say thank you to these friends, businesses and community organizations.

Attracting individuals of all ages, the Solanco Fair is a work in progress. Over the years, the fair has both improved

and built new facilities on the fairgrounds, added new entertaining events to its three-day lineup and welcomed new categories in which to display competitive handiwork. While the fair association works to see that the Solanco Fair changes to meet the needs of the growing community, it is also a source of pride that the fair retains much of the same community spirit, volunteer dedication and agricultural heritage as that of the very first fair.

Every September in southern Lancaster County you will find FFA and 4-H members grooming their animals for show, proud cooks in their kitchen baking treats for the judges to sample, farmers and gardeners choosing their produce for competition, young children participating in the parades and an overall enthusiastic and excited attitude in the citizens of the Solanco area. By Marcella Peyre-Ferry The cover of the Solanco Fair premium book features a blue ribbon-winning cow drawn by young artist Brooke Killian. The image is a reminder of the direct connection between farming and the Solanco Fair.

“I think cows are really cute,” Brooke explained.

“We were thinking of things at the Solanco Fair, and I know cows are one of them.”

Visiting the Solanco Brooke Killian’s artwork appears on Fair is an annual event the cover of this year’s Solanco Fair for the Killian family. “I premium book. like seeing all the animals and all the art at the fair,” Brooke said. “I like the french fries (and) the milkshakes, and I also like to see the animals. I went last year and I saw the parade. I thought that was very cool.”

Brooke has never entered an item in the fair, but now that she is a winning cover artist, she is considering it. “I was thinking about entering art or some photography,” she said.

Brooke was a student at Smith Middle School when she submitted her drawing for the art contest, which was open to eighth-graders at Smith and Swift middle schools. This fall, Brooke is attending Solanco High School. She likes math and reading and she plays the violin, but art is her true passion. She is considering a future career in graphic design.

“I like drawing and painting,” she said, adding that she usually uses acrylic paints. “I like still lifes a lot and abstracts.”

Brooke was surprised that her entry was the winner in the fair book cover art competition. “There were a lot of other good covers that were (submitted),” she commented. “It was a big surprise. I was so shocked; I just couldn’t believe it.”

Brooke’s mother, Angie Killian, was not as surprised. “She’s been working really hard on her art skills. She was really excited to get this done,” Angie said. “She’s very talented. I knew it was a very good piece, and I had a feeling she was going to win. I knew she could do it.”

Trimble Chosen As Grand Marshal

By Dayna M. Reidenouer 1965 was an eventful year for Paul and Charlotte Trimble. The Drumore Township couple married that year, and Paul began serving with the Solanco Fair.

“I was always interested in the fair, so when they asked me to serve on the dairy committee, that got me involved,” Paul recalled.

Although the Trimbles retired from farming in October 1994 to open Pilgrim’s Oak Golf Course, Paul has continued to serve on the dairy committee. He also joined the board of directors in 1971 and served as president in the 1980s. The board meets every other month at the Solanco Senior Center, and Paul has rarely missed a meeting. At one of those meetings a few months ago, hog committee member Justine Kreider nominated Paul for the honor of grand marshal of the Solanco Fair Parade.

“Generally, the person they nominate is not at the meeting, but I was there,” Paul said with a smile.

Parade coordinator Jeff Minnich explained the rationale behind the selection of grand marshal, saying, “We know that life is short. We started the grand marshal program 20 years ago (to recognize the contributions of volunteers). So much is behind-the-scenes work. Paul is an example. We’ve had individuals show up each year, quietly putting in the time.” Being selected as grand marshal does not mean that an honoree is excused from further service. “It’s not ‘Thanks, now we’re putting you out to pasture,’” Minnich said. “We would still like you to continue your work, but we want to make public notice that we appreciate your service.”

Paul plans to continue serving as he is able. “As long as I’m healthy and they keep asking, I’ll probably say yes,” he commented.

Paul and Charlotte are set to lead the parade, which will wind its way through the streets of Quarryville beginning at 6 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 19. This year’s theme is “Home Sweet Home.”

“We have watched more parades in the past 10 years (than ever before),” Paul said. “We have a couple grandchildren who are excited about the parade, so we watch with them.”

Much of Paul’s work with the fair actually takes place before the event opens. On the Tuesday before the fair, he helps to set up the tables for the display of crops. Then in the afternoon, he operates the scale to weigh the hogs, dairy beef, and steers that will be sold in the livestock auction. During the fair itself, Paul assists the board members and other volunteers in emptying the numerous trash receptacles located on the fairgrounds. He also helps to

close up the event.

“On the Saturday after the fair, we congregate and clean up. By noon, you’d never know there was a fair,” Paul commented. He credited local Girl Scout troops for helping to make the grounds pristine by picking up every stray piece of paper and trash.

Paul and Charlotte’s memories of the fair stretch back to its early years.

During their childhood, the Solanco Fair was held behind the Quarryville Fire Paul Trimble, accompanied by his wife, Company on East State Street. The artwork was Charlotte, will serve as grand marshal of the Solanco Fair Parade on Sept. 19. displayed in Newswanger Furniture, and other exhibits were set up in Bill Wiley’s farm equipment business. As a 4-H member, Paul entered dairy animals and field corn in the fair. Charlotte entered cookies and showed cattle. Their three children continued the tradition by exhibiting dairy animals and hogs.

The Trimbles appreciate the fair’s rural roots and would like to see it remain largely unchanged. “I would hope it would continue to be an agricultural fair.

So many have turned into a carnival, but I would like it to continue to celebrate our agricultural heritage,” Paul commented. He acknowledged that the fair has a broader appeal. “We’re an agricultural fair, but we have people from all walks of life who serve.”

One of the reasons the Trimbles look forward to attending the fair is that it is a social gathering, Charlotte said.

“I see people at the fair I may not see any other time of the year, and of course, we have to have at least one milkshake and (some) french fries,” Paul remarked.

“And chicken potpie,” Charlotte added.

By Dayna M. Reidenouer For the first time in several decades, the Solanco Fair will be represented by royalty. Thanks to the efforts of Carly Foose, the Harvest Queen Pageant has been revived. The pageant will be held on Saturday, Sept. 15, at 6 p.m. in the East Drumore Township municipal building, 925 Robert Fulton Highway, Quarryville.

“I have always personally wondered why the Solanco Fair doesn’t have a fair queen,” Foose related. “I was surprised to learn that one of the major reasons was that there was no one who volunteered to take on the job of starting the program again. It all comes back to volunteering; I’m at a great time in my life where I can fully dedicate myself to this program and the young ladies involved.”

Foose has spent many hours researching the history of the pageant, and she continues to look for more information about the Harvest Queen Pageant, which ran through the 1950s to the 1970s. She has discovered that her great-aunt Joyce Dissinger Herr was a contestant in the inaugural Harvest Queen Pageant in 1950.

“That has made this all the more special for me,” Foose remarked. “I hope the young ladies competing find the value in the program and see what it once was.”

During the pageant on Sept. 15, the contestants will be evaluated on their speech, essay, personal interview, poise, answers to on-stage questions, and overall interaction with the judges. The winner will receive a $500 scholarship, and the runner-up will receive a $250 scholarship. The scholarships are funded by the fair board and will be disbursed once the winners complete their obligations. Foose listed the winners’ responsibilities as volunteering at the fair, helping with various activities, riding in the parade, thanking vendors, congratulating winners, and promoting the fair to the public.

“Community involvement is so important, especially for events like the Solanco Fair,” Foose commented. “The community needs more young people involved in volunteerrun organizations so they can continue in the future.”

By Marcella Peyre-Ferry The livestock exhibitions are a major part of the Solanco Fair – and one of the many interesting parts for spectators – but preparing for one weekend of competition requires months of work.

“The public gets to see the fun aspect of it in the show ring. These kids are up before school feeding in the snow and ice, and it is a lot of hard work,” 4-H educator Lori Little said.

4-H members ages 8 to 18 put many hours into their livestock entries no matter what the size or species, from rabbits and goats to very large steers.

Not all 4-H members come from farming families, and their previous experience with farm animals may be limited, but the 4-H leaders are there to help.

“The leaders are there for them as a resource. If they are completely new to it, we will come and help them obtain an animal. We have informational and educational meetings throughout the year so they know management-wise what they should be doing,” Little said. “They have to participate in quality assurance training to make sure they are humanely and ethically treating their animals, but also (to ensure) it’s a safe product.”

The students in 4-H begin with the purchase of a very young animal that they will raise for exhibition at the fair. The time involved depends on the species of animal; small animals take a few months to mature, while cattle require most of the year to prepare.

The 4-H member is responsible for feeding, grooming, and making sure his or her animal has proper veterinary care. Being directly involved with an animal on a daily basis helps the student see the progress the animal is making and spot any problems at an early stage.

“The number one thing they need to be doing is spending time with those animals. They need to be the ones out there caring for them, feeding them, walking them, and working with them every day so they can catch what’s going on,” Little said. “When your animal is sick or unhealthy, the most important thing is to catch it right away.”

The 4-H members also cover the economic side of livestock production by tracking all of their feed purchases and other bills. Each student is required to keep a project journal in which they record their progress throughout the animal’s life with them.

In addition to raising the animal, 4-H members must prepare it for showing.

“Every species shows a little bit different, and the idea of being a good showman is to be able to work with your animal and to be able to show it off to its best advantage,” Little said. “Different animals have conformation faults.

A good showman knows how to correct them or hide them and show their animal off to the best advantage.”

Small animals like rabbits are handled regularly so they will be calm when examined by judges. Larger animals take more training. For example, they must be taught to be led by a halter or stand for the judge.

“When it comes to the bigger animals, especially the steers, the dairy cattle, and the dairy beef, you are out of luck if you don’t start early. We say you need to be working with them as young as a couple of weeks old to get them working with you. When you’re working with a 1,500-pound animal, if they don’t know you and you’re not working with them from the start, you don’t have a chance to win. You don’t have a chance to control that animal. They go where they want to,” Little said. “It’s the same with the smaller animals as well: the sheep, the goats, the pigs. Getting that animal to brace for you or to lead for you around the ring or to set and stand for you and walk is all months and months of work.”

The thrill of winning a ribbon is the reward for a job well done, but there is another bittersweet moment that comes for the youngsters when their winning animals are auctioned off on the final day of the fair, with the exception of dairy cattle, which are kept for milk production.

The students know that food animals are bound for slaughter, and that is part of the experience that they understand from the beginning of their project.

“It’s extremely emotional. The reality is, they go in with the mindset that we are producing a product for other people to consume, and they’re doing it the best and safest way possible,” Little said. “Those animals are given the best life possible.”

Just as the animals mature and develop, so do the 4-H members.

“That’s always one of the most rewarding things. Not only watching them build those projects skills, but the leadership skills as well,” Little said. “It’s all those personal development, communication, and life skills. We want them to be the best human beings they can be.”
