Quartet Will Perform Concert The Dixie Melody Boys, a gospel music quartet, will perform at Yoder’s Restaurant, 14 S. Tower Road, New Holland, on Tuesday, Dec. 31, at 2 p.m. The quartet members will share their unique four-part harmony. Since organizing over five decades ago, The Dixie Melody Boys have enjoyed much success, including a Grammy nomination and numerous Fan Award nominations from The Singing News Magazine, a Southern gospel music fan and trade publication. Hit releases have included recent releases such as “I’m Gonna Lift My Praise,” “I’ll Be Living That Way,” “I Won’t Compromise,” “ Welcome Home,” “Antioch Church Choir,” and “I’m One Of Them.” Group leader Ed O’Neal, a 50-year gospel music veteran, was inducted into the Southern

The award, for which PFB considers candidates who do not have the majority of their income subject to normal production risk, recognizes Rohrer’s leadership ability, involvement with agriculture, and participation with PFB. WellSpan Philhaven has hired a psychiatrist who specializes in the treatment of addiction. Mitchell Crawford, D.O., is the new director of addiction services for WellSpan Philhaven. He provides support and creates clinical services for the treatment of addiction throughout the entire WellSpan Health system in Adams, Franklin, Lancaster, Lebanon and York counties. Crawford has received specialized training in the treatment of substance abuse disorders, such as those involving opioids, alcohol and nicotine. He is an advocate of medication-assisted treatment, which uses medications in combination with counseling and behavioral therapy, for patients with substance use disorders. A native of Lancaster County, Crawford earned his medical

Faulkner Supports Angel Tree Program Faulkner Chevrolet helped spearhead a campaign, alongside Faulkner BMW, in conjunction with The Salvation Army to bring Christmas cheer to 75 children throughout Lancaster County. It was the first collaboration between the two Faulkner dealerships and the local Salvation Army’s Angel Tree Program. The Angel Tree Program is an annual event. Children ages of 2 to 18 can request gifts, and the Lancaster community supports the
efforts to grant their wishes. Children provide their size for a new jacket and request hats, gloves, and scarves to keep them warm during the winter months. Requested toys include crafts, board games, dolls, stuffed animals, and more. The goal is for donors to give what they are able and bring joy to children during the holiday season. Faulkner Chevrolet general manager Chad Berger organized the dealerships’ participation in the project.

Museum Sets Science Week The final week of December is the third annual Cool Science Week at the North Museum of Nature and Science, 400 College Ave., Lancaster, from Thursday, Dec. 26, to Tuesday, Dec. 31. The week will feature special self-led and facilitated activities, crafts, and demonstrations exploring simple scientific concepts. Visitors will learn about math, chemistry, physics, engineering, and more. There is no additional cost for the hands-on experiences during Cool Science Week. In the planetarium, visitors can see a special winter-themed program, “Season of Light,” as well as showings of the 2018 film “The
Grinch,” starring Benedict Cumberbatch. Participants will also find new temporary exhibits on the floor, including “Arctic Animals” and “The Science of a Snowflake.” The North Museum is open year-round from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Tuesdays through Saturdays and from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Sundays. It features world-class collections of rocks, minerals, and birds, as well as an active glassenclosed beehive, a dinosaur gallery, a state-of-the-art planetarium, and a live animal room. Cattell Named To Board The American Heart Association, a voluntary organization focused on heart and brain health for all, has appointed George Cattell to its Lancaster Division board of directors. Cattell has served as the exercise physiologist for the Penn Medicine Lancaster General Health Employee Wellness Program for the past eight years. He runs the employee fitness center and helps members achieve their health goals. He previously worked at Notre Dame’s summer sports camps and with the Pittsburgh Penguins medical staff for the 2005-06 season. He earned a bachelor’s degree in athletic training and a master’s degree in performance enhancement and injury prevention from the California University of Pennsylvania. He is a lifetime resident of Lancaster County, currently living in Lancaster city. Community Funding Inc. of Lancaster plans to open its services in late January 2020 to issue grants of up to $1,000. The program is designed to help people in need to pay for household goods, medical expenses, telephone bills, utilities, insurance, groceries, and other related expenses. Grants will be funded by corporations, small businesses, and individuals in the community. The program will be available to senior citizens and veterans, and all applicants must be age 65 or older. The areas to be served include Columbia, Elizabethtown, Lancaster, Leola, Lititz, Mount Joy, New Holland, and Quarryville. Community Funding is seeking donations. Donors May Reap Rewards Giving to charity is a selfless act that is worthy of recognition. That recognition can come in many forms, and donors should know that even the “tax man” likes to reward men and women who donate to charity. The United States rewards donors with tax credits. The financial services firm H&R Block notes that, in the United States, taxpayers can deduct donations made to qualified charities. Such deductions must be itemized, but they can greatly reduce a person’s taxable income. Laws regarding donations and tax deductions can be difficult to understand, so donors should always discuss their donations with their financial planners or tax preparers before filing their returns. Some general information regarding donations and deductions that can be useful to prospective donors follows. In the United States, donations must go to one of three types of

The plaintive strains of “Silent Night” played on a harmonica filled the air as members of the Manheim Township Woodcarvers Association (MTWA) and the Lancaster County WoodCarvers (LCWC) placed ornaments on a small artificial evergreen tree on Dec. 4. Each of the more than 170 ornaments had been painstakingly carved and decorated by members of the two groups. “Some of them are so beautifully ornate. They really bring the spirit of Christmas,” commented Lauren Musser, corporate and community relationship manager for Hospice & Community Care (HCC). and Saint Nicholas, evergreen trees, angels, birds, and snowmen, and there is even a Noah’s ark with a pair of delicately carved giraffes. The tree is located in the chaplains’ office of the Bob Fryer & Family Inpatient Center, 4075 Old Harrisburg Pike, near Mount Joy. The facility has 24 beds, where seriously ill individuals’ pain and symptoms are managed during generally short-term stays before returning home. During December, HCC chaplains and social workers invite clients’ family members to choose ornaments from the tree as holiday keepsakes. “People are here, but the holidays are still happening around them,” Musser said. “This creates a sweet moment for them to get
through this holiday season.” “(The ornaments are) a tangible expression of care that can be carried on by families,” chaplain Kevin Frain remarked. “The memories associated with an ornament may be painful, but (they are) meaningful.” This is the 11th consecutive year that the MTWA has given a decorated tree to HCC’s inpatient care facility and the third that LCWC has participated. The tradition was started by the late Bob Stampf, who was a founder of the MTWA, when the group members sought to share woodcarving with the community in an impactful way. HCC was suggested, as an MTWA member had a relative receiving care. MTWA member Ruth Stetter related that the ornaments went over so well that first year that when she went to pick up the empty tree, Musser joked that Stetter may have it only if she brought it back with more ornaments the following December. “It’s a good thing (to do),” Stetter said. “It makes you feel good to do this for folks.” MTWA member Mark Arbogast coordinates the ornament project and is also a member of the LCWC. When the MTWA, which has only about 10 members,
could no longer create the necessary number of ornaments, Arbogast invited the 80-member LCWC to join the effort. “The Lancaster County WoodCarvers was very happy to jump in and help,” Arbogast said. Approximately half of the LCWC’s members contributed pieces, and both styles and intricacy vary. “The details of these pieces astound me every year,” Musser said. “This is art, and they bring their gift right here to hospice.” Both carving groups have a mission to preserve the art of woodcarving. The MTWA runs a six-week class for beginners starting in April every year. Newcomers are also welcome to attend meetings, which are held at the Stauffer Mansion, 1241 Lititz Pike, Lancaster, at 7 p.m. on the last Wednesday of every month. No meeting will be held this month, however, as the last Wednesday is Christmas Day. Interested individuals may call or text Stetter at 717-629-7111 for more information. Free Throw Dyslexia Center Receives Donation Contest Set
to share their knowledge of and passion for the detailing trade. Held at the Hershey Region Antique Automobile Club of America in Hershey, Detailing for Dyslexia featured keynote speaker Renny Doyle, a worldrenowned detail mentor, trainer, author and detailer of Air Force One, and Billy Baugus, owner of American Detailer Garage. The Knights of Columbus Free Throw Championship is sponsored annually, with winners progressing through local, district, and state competitions. International champions are announced by the K of C international headquarters based on scores from the state-level competitions. With the guidance of LM faculty, and despite the rainy weather, seniors built a shed and deep-cleaned Head Start classrooms at CAP, repaired a bridge and split firewood at Black Rock Retreat, sorted donated food for families at Blessings of Hope, tutored students at Parkesburg POINT, split wood at Woodcrest Retreat, sang and talked with residents at Landis Homes, and performed various other service projects
throughout Lancaster County. Senior Service Day began eight years ago at the initiative of a couple of students who requested that seniors be given the opportunity to have a special day of giving back to the community. Each year, on the same day that the juniors are taking their PSAT tests, the seniors go into the community for a day of service. They also commit up to $500 from their senior fundraisers to help with transportation, as needed.
Walkers met Barnstormers mascot Cylo at the inaugural Walk to End Epilepsy - Lancaster, held on Oct. 12 at the Barnstormers’ home stadium. The Epilepsy Foundation of Eastern PA (EFEPA) held its inaugural Walk to End Epilepsy Lancaster on Oct. 12 at the Barnstormers’ home stadium. Three hundred fifty walkers raised a total of more than $30,000 for the local epilepsy community. Kerri Michnya, EFEPA’s Lancaster resource coordinator, organized the event and sought out local support. Volunteers pitched in throughout the day.

A partnership between Lancaster City Alliance and Community Action Partnership of Lancaster County (CAP) has employed city residents in need of work and resulted in the completion of its first project at 602 Saint Joseph St. The project, known as Front STEPS, combines the expertise of both CAP and Lancaster City Alliance to engage the neighborhood and train workers to repair facades on various city streets. The property, formerly a condemned laundromat, received significant work to its Victorian-era storefront, including installation of period-appropriate storefront windows, doors, and railings as well as repairs to the crumbling foundation. Brennan, Stoltzfoos Join CASA Board Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) of Lancaster County has announced the addition of Elizabeth Brennan and Ben Stoltzfoos to the CASA board of directors. Brennan is no stranger to CASA, having served as board chair from 2012 to 2013. She received her Bachelor of Science in business administration from Millersville University and presently serves as CFO and treasurer at Luthercare in Lititz. She is a licensed CPA in Pennsylvania and Maryland and is a current member of PCPA and AICPA. She resides in Landisville with her husband and two daughters. Stoltzfoos is also already familiar with CASA, having first learned of the organization through family members who were serving as foster parents. Stoltzfoos is the vice president of business banking at S&T Bank. He holds a bachelor’s degree in politics and philosophy from Messiah College and a Master of Business Administration from Georgetown University McDonough School of Business.
