Lancaster Mennonite School (LMS) sold its former New Danville Campus property located at 393 Long Lane, Lancaster, to Catherine Hershey Schools for Early Learning on Oct. 21. LMS unified all students from the former Locust Grove and New Danville campuses on the Lincoln Highway campus for the 2022-23 school year, starting in August.
The mission of LMS is to provide a Christ-centered, high quality education for prekindergarten through 12th-grade students in a diverse community that nurtures them to become creative and innovative learners who are prepared for college, a career, and life and are empowered to change the world through Christlike love, peacemaking, and service.
LMS’ unification has allowed the school to update and expand its facilities and to hone in on key curriculum priorities of faith formation, fine arts, STEAM (science, technology, engineering, art
and math), outdoor learning, and world languages. It has also allowed for collaborative learning opportunities across grade levels with the goal of fully utilizing and effectively stewarding the resources of its 95-acre Lincoln Highway campus.
The upgrades to the campus are intended to help the school serve the needs of students at every age and provide new spaces such as a new elementary MakerSpace and art room, new high school science labs, new media centers, and classroom upgrades, which are designed to support new curriculum initiatives to help students grow in their understanding of the world and discover their purpose in it.
The Catherine Hershey Schools for Early Learning are subsidiaries of Milton Hershey School. The Catherine Hershey Schools for Early Learning are for children from birth to age 5 and provide weekday care and education for early childhood learning. Their program covers all the costs for those who qualify.

Keep Pennsylvania Beautiful will sponsor the Litter Hawk Youth Award Program, a recognition program for students in kindergarten through grade six who complete a designated project specific to their grade level. Students can participate individually or as part of a lesson initiated by schools, homeschools, Scout troops, 4-H clubs, environmental clubs, or other organized groups.
The Litter Hawk Youth Award Program is a way for kids to share their hope, optimism, and concerns about litter and to inspire others to care for their communities through art, words, or video.
In response to Pennsylvania’s new anti-littering education campaign, PA Fights Dirty: Every Litter Bit Matters, the
theme is “Show Us How Every Litter Bit Matters to You.”
Projects include a poster for children in kindergarten through grade four and an essay or video for children in grades five and six. The deadline to participate is Tuesday, Jan. 31, 2023.
Two entries will be selected as winners in each grade level. The winner and the runner-up will receive a gift card as a prize. All participants will receive certificates. Winners will be announced in April in time for Earth Day celebrations.
The Litter Hawk Youth Award Program was created with funding provided by the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection. For more information, downloadable promotional posters, and an online entry form, visit www.keeppabeautiful.org and select Awards under Grants & Awards. On Oct. 22, sponsors, volunteers, and mission families came together to support Greystone Manor Therapeutic Riding Center (GMTRC) at its 10th annual “Mane” Event Dinner and Auction presented by Garman Builders at Bent Creek Country Club. The event raised $70,000 to carry out GMTRC’s mission to enhance the lives of individuals with special needs and other diagnoses through equine-assisted activities.
Other event sponsors included Bobby Rahal Lexus of Lancaster County, Lancaster Toyota, and Thrivent.
The event’s mission ambassador was 44-year-old Nathan
Buckwalter, an Ephrata native, who is celebrating 40 years of therapeutic riding with the organization. Nathan, who was born with cerebral palsy, started riding at GMTRC in 1982 at the age
The 35th annual Crispus Attucks Community Center MLK Breakfast will be held from 7 to 9:30 a.m. on Monday, Jan. 16, returning to an in-person gathering at Millersville University with the addition of a livestream option. The event will be held at Marauder Courts at the Student Memorial Center on
Shenks Lane. The event’s master of ceremonies will be Jeremy Jenkins from WGALTV. Pedro Rivera, president of Thaddeus Stevens College, is this year’s honorary event chair.
The event is a time for the community to come together, to foster relationships, to dialogue around the life and legacy of Martin Luther King Jr., and to confront issues of inequity and injustice. This event, the center’s largest fundraiser, annually raises $100,000 - nearly one-third of the center’s yearly budget.
Marc Lamont Hill, who previously spoke at the 2018 MLK Breakfast, will present “And How Are the Children … Now?” “And how are the children?” is a traditional greeting passed
On Oct. 22, Lancaster-based music group The Jess Zimmerman Band won the Album of the Year award at the eighth annual Josie Music Awards in Nashville. The band’s album “Breathe” garnered the award
in the country rock and Southern rock category, and the band itself was also nominated for awards in four other categories: Music Video of the Year, Entertainer of the Year, Fan’s Choice Award and Rock Vocalist of the Year. The Jess Zimmerman Band comprises
frontwoman Jess Heitz, guitarist Joe Barszowski, bassist John Knobler and drummer Joe Mattis, and has concerts scheduled for the spring in Holtwood and Millersville.
The awards ceremony was hosted at the Grand Ole Opry, a nationally known
American country music venue that has been in operation for almost a century. “I was blown away that we were nominated in five categories,” Heitz said. “To win Album of the Year in such an iconic place was incredible.”

amongst the Masai in Kenya. The greeting acknowledges the high value of children and their wellbeing, and it acts as a measure of how the community and society is faring. The goal is to always be able to answer the greeting with “All the children are well.” Hill will speak about how people can collectively work to build a better community and world, one where they can say, “All the children are well.”
A Philadelphia native, Hill is currently the host of BET News and a political contributor for CNN. He has received numerous awards from the National Association of Black Journalists, GLAAD, and the International Academy of Digital Arts and Sciences. He is the Steve Charles Professor of Media, Cities, and Solutions at Temple University. Prior to that, he held positions at
Columbia University and Morehouse College. He is a founding board member of the nonprofit organization My5th, as well as a board member and organizer of the Philadelphia Student Union. Hill also works closely with the ACLU Drug Reform Project, focusing on drug informant policy. He received his doctorate from the University of Pennsylvania, and he is the author or co-author of several books.
New this year, three ticket options will be available in the spirit of access and inclusion. These ticket options are an in-person ticket, a discounted livestream ticket, and a pay-what-you-will inperson ticket.
To purchase tickets, visit www.caplanc.org/MLK or contact Kristy Aurand at kaurand@caplanc.org or 717299-7388, ext. 3032. Sponsorships are also available; for details, contact Aurand.
Each year, the Josie Music Awards recognize specifically independent artists, meaning they aren’t signed to a record label, so they handle things like recording, producing, touring and marketing themselves. Although well-traveled in the Lancaster and greater Pennsylvania country music scene, The Jess Zimmerman Band’s success as an independent group has also taken it across the East Coast, Midwest and South.
“When it comes to ‘Breathe,’ the album itself was a monumental step for us as a band,” Heitz said. “It was also a big step for me emotionally and physically.” The Jess Zimmerman Band independently released “Breathe” in May 2021, following a flurry of recording sessions. The band members stayed in Nashville for five days, during which they recorded and mixed each of the 11 songs on the record.
“It was a lot of work from start to finish. Sometimes we would be at the studio from 9 a.m. to 10 p.m. working on these songs,” Heitz said. “Breathe” is The Jess Zimmerman Band’s first full-length album.
Heitz grew up on a dairy farm in Ephrata and currently lives in Mount Joy with her husband. Her musical career began at a young age; she would perform at local fairs, talent shows, church services and school events growing up.
“Everyone has a dream when it comes to music, but if I were able to go back and tell my younger self that it would be flourishing, I don’t think she’d believe me,” said Heitz.
The Jess Zimmerman Band has multiple shows in Lancaster approaching after the new year: on Friday, Jan. 13, the group will perform at Phantom Power, 121 W. Frederick St., Millersville; on Friday, Feb. 10, it will take the stage at Mickey’s Black Box, 101 Rock Lititz Blvd., Lititz;
and on Friday, March 24, it will perform at Southern Lancaster County Farmer-Sportsmen’s Association, 573 Hilldale Road, Holtwood. “There’s an amazing music scene in central Pennsylvania, and we hope to connect with people all over, too,” Heitz said. “Our biggest goal is to reach and impact people in whatever way we can. That’s what ‘Breathe’ was for me.”

of 4. His parents, Ray and Nancy Buckwalter, shared that therapeutic riding enables Nathan to strengthen his core and loosen his tight muscles in a nontraditional therapeutic setting without causing pain.
During the “Mane” Event, Nathan was able to reunite with one of his former volunteers from the early 1990s,
Since 1981, GMTRC has provided therapeutic equineassisted activities to children and adults with special needs and other diagnoses. The $70,000 raised at the fundraiser will be used to ensure that low-income dis-
abled community members will be able to continue to receive services regardless of their ability to pay. GMTRC has also created customized programming for special interest groups of people who share a common interest but do not have a disability or diagnoses. If you look out your window on New Year’s Day, you may see a crowd of motorcycles zooming down the road. They are part of an annual ride to benefit veterans.
“We take the same route every year, and people know about it, so they come out and kids come out holding flags and cheering us on,” said Tyler Stumpf, one of the
event organizers. “It’s become a New Year’s tradition.”
The is the 14th year for the event, which will be held on Sunday, Jan. 1. Registration will begin at 10:30 a.m., and the ride will leave from the Walter S. Ebersole American Legion Post 185, 255 W. Main St., Mount Joy, at 1 p.m. The ladies auxiliary will serve breakfast items before the ride.
The 25-mile ride will follow
a route along the Susquehanna River and conclude at the Elizabethtown American Legion Post 329, 240 N. Hanover St., where a pork and sauerkraut meal will be served following the ride. An auction will be held there as well, featuring items donated by local businesses. T-shirts and patches will also be for sale. Proceeds from the event will benefit veterans in the Lebanon VA Medical Center. Since its inception, the ride has raised more than $240,000, Stumpf said, adding, “We will hit the quarter-million mark this year.”
Each year, the event includes fun traditions such as Baby New Year, when a participant is chosen for the honor and must attend in a baby costume and sash. This year’s honoree is Brian Landvader.
Over the years, the ride has grown significantly, Stumpf said. “We started with 11 motorcycles, and now we’re averaging about 400 motorcycles,” he commented. “When all the bikes are lined up on Main Street in Mount Joy, it’s really something to see.”
Billy Hecht, who is also helping to organize the ride, said the event has continued to be popular because it not only offers a fun excursion for participants, but it also supports an important cause. “A lot of people like that the money stays local,” he noted. “One hundred percent of the money goes strictly to the veterans’ needs.”
The event will be held rain, snow or shine, and participants are encouraged to come with any form of transportation.
“You don’t have to come with a motorcycle,” Hecht shared.
“You can drive a car or a truck. You can come in any vehicle.”
For more information on the event, call Stumpf at 717468-6197 or Hecht at 717283-6379.

Humane Pennsylvania has announced its holiday happenings and other efforts.
As part of its 12 Days of Adoptions event, the organization will offer fee-waived pet adoptions through Saturday, Dec. 24. Potential adopters are encouraged to visit the shelter campuses or www.humane pa.org. All potential adopters are required to go through Humane Pennsylvania’s diligent adoption screening process; approval is not guaranteed.
Adoptions include Humane Pennsylvania’s 30-day Adoption Health Supplement; spaying or neutering before adoption; vaccinations, including current rabies vaccination, and de-worming medication; flea treatment; microchipping and chip registration; and a one-pound bag of Science Diet pet food.
The organization’s annual Howliday Donation Drive will take place through Saturday, Dec. 31, and collection boxes will be stationed at participating businesses throughout Berks and Lancaster counties and surrounding areas. The organization’s wish list is available at https://humanepa.org /donate/ways-to-give/ wish-list/. For a list of participating businesses, visit https://humanepa.org/events /holiday-donation-drive/. Any business or organization that would like to participate may contact Nicole Koch, the events coordinator, at nkoch@humanepa.org or 610-750-6100, ext. 232.
Spike’s Pet Pantry is especially in need of wet and dry dog food and cat food. Donations of unopened pet food may be accepted at the Howliday Donation Drive participating businesses; The Freedom Center for Animal LifeSaving, 1801 N. 11th St., Reading; and The Lancaster Center for Animal Life-Saving, 2195 Lincoln Highway East, Lancaster. Donations can also be ordered online and shipped directly to a Humane Pennsylvania location.
Community members may also give a monetary donation to the Spike’s Pet Pantry Fund. This fund allows the organization to purchase pet food as needed. For more information about making a monetary donation to Spike’s Pet Pantry, contact Lauren Henderson Pignetti, director of development, at lhenderson @humanepa.org or 610-7506100, ext. 211.
Humane Pennsylvania has also announced that beginning in January 2023, The Freedom Center for Animal Life-Saving will offer lowcost sterilization packages for cats and dogs as an expansion of the Healthy Pets Initiative. These packages will offer sterilization, vaccination, microchip identification, and more. Additional services may be available for an additional charge.
To register, visit https:// tinyurl.com/humanepa-spay. The low-cost sterilization packages are only intended for friendly, household pets. For information on feral cat solutions, visit https:// humanepa.org/services/free -roaming-feral-cat-solutions/.
