Nelson Coblentz, who, along with his wife, Sarah, answered God’s call to form Gospel Express in 1984, has some words of advice for married couples.
“A happy marriage is a union of two forgivers,” said Nelson, who is in his 49th year of wedded bliss with Sarah. “The whole theme of forgiveness is one of the biggest things in a marriage relationship.” With a chuckle, he added, “Keep forgiving and give flowers.”
Nelson and Sarah will sing and share their advice at the eighth annual Restart Training Center Ministry (RTCM) Valentine Banquet to be held at Faith Mennonite High School, 5085 Woodland Drive, Kinzers, on Tuesday, Jan. 31, 2023. Doors will open at 5:30 p.m., and a fellowship meal, catered by Shady Maple, will begin at 6:30 p.m.
RTCM is an organization that strives to help men who have turned to abusing chemicals or have developed other kinds of addictions.
Gospel Express has focused on prison services and crusades, evangelism, revival meetings, discipleship materials, and more in the United States and Canada, as well as internationally. Nelson and Sarah and their five children traveled and lived for many years in a 40-foot bus. “How do you keep a marriage alive on and off the road?” asked Nelson. “You are doing marriage living in a glass house, which means you’re visible to everybody and you are under the microscope.”
Nelson and Sarah have negotiated the years successfully, bringing their adult children and now grandchildren into the ministry. “We have been able to minister three generationally for the first time stateside and internationally,” said Nelson. “That has been a dream.”
Jaime Santiago, founder and executive director of RTCM, noted that the Coblentz team is a good fit for the banquet because of the couple’s devotion to each other and experience with prison ministry.

suffer from trauma and addiction,” said Santiago, who added that the organization evangelizes and disciples inmates in the U.S. and Canada. “We are trying to evangelize and disciple broken people,” explained Santiago.
Currently, RTCM is graduating about a dozen students a year and mounting a capital campaign with the goal of purchasing the former Strasburg Elementary School. “The old elementary school building would be a good fit for us, and it would allow us to expand and add a second phase to the program,” said Santiago. Goals for the second phase, which would offer 12 beds, are to provide rooms students
could rent while working locally. RTCM would continue to provide meals, transportation, and a supportive environment. “We could house 40 students and up to 10 live-in staff members,” said Santiago, who noted that the goal is to raise $1.3 million to purchase the building and a total of $1.6 million with renovations included.
Seating at the banquet will be limited. Table sponsorships are available. Readers who would like to purchase tickets or sponsor a table may call or text 717-304-3291 or email officemanager@restart ministry.org. Tickets may also be purchased at www.restart ministry.org/events.

The American Institute of Architects (AIA) Pennsylvania recently named Tippetts/Weaver (T/Wa) Architects of Lancaster as the recipient of the 2022 Architecture Firm Award.
This is the first time since its inception in 2013 that the award has been given to a firm with a female founder. Wendy H. Tippetts is one of the two founding partners of T/Wa, and for more than 30 years she has led the design direction and culture of the firm.
The Architecture Firm (of the Year) Award recognizes a Pennsylvania firm whose passion and practice have produced notable architecture for at least a decade. Deserving firms have demonstrated excellence in design and leadership through any combination of the following criteria: the breadth and/or depth of their portfolio, a healthy firm culture, influence on the practice of architecture and exemplary outcomes for clients and/or society.
T/Wa was chosen from a pool of four nominees submitted to the committee by the nearly 3,000 members of AIA Pennsylvania. T/Wa is not only the first firm from central Pennsylvania to have been chosen for the award, but also the smallest.
Working in the small cities, towns and rural places of central Pennsylvania, T/Wa mixes a modern aesthetic with an historical con-
text. The firm’s projects include the Fulton Theatre expansion and Actor’s Housing; the Lancaster Science Factory; the Pennsylvania College of Art and Design; Lancaster Conservancy in Lancaster; Historic Fairmount affordable housing; Keystone Kidspace; St. John the Baptist Episcopal Church in York; Newville Town Center mixed-use housing/commercial in Newville; Bucknell University; Barnes & Noble Bookstore in Lewisburg; and numerous residences, including new construction, renovation and adaptive reuse across the area.
In its 35-year history, T/Wa has been recognized with more than 50 awards, includ-
ing design awards from the Central Pennsylvania AIA Chapter and from 10,000 Friends of Pennsylvania, multiple annual awards from Preservation Pennsylvania for historic and adaptive reuse projects and many awards from the Historic Preservation Trust of Lancaster County, Historic Trust of Cumberland County and Historic York, among others.
The firm of 10 includes six registered architects. It has pursued projects to address issues of inequity, including affordable housing, public access to health care and minority-based community enterprises. In the last five years, $300,000 of in-kind services have been donated to nonprofits.

Lan-Chester Chorus
“It’s all four-part harmonies (with) alto, bass, tenor and soprano,” said Esworthy, noting that the chorus got its name from the fact that its members are from both Lancaster and Chester counties.
Light refreshments will be served following the concert, and the fire hall will be festively decorated by members of the chorus with poinsettias and greens.
The chorus, founded in 1950, has been meeting in Christiana for more than 70 years. It was founded by Martha Jean Moffert and Richard Wright, who served as accompanist and business manager, respectively, for the chorus through 2008.
Directors over the years have included Moffert, Sally Breuninger, Jim Zwally, Donald Trostle, Elliott Block, Cliff Behrendt, Earl Pickle and Bill Young. The current director is Kimberly Kusnersyk, and the accompanist is Christine Smith.
The chorus performs at local retirement communities, including Quarryville Presbyterian Retirement Community, Harrison House in Christiana and Tel Hai Retirement Community in
Honey Brook, as well as other venues, such as Longwood Gardens and the Brandywine River Museum.
The group has also performed several times at the White House for Christmas and at the Kennedy Center. For many years, the chorus presented Saturday evening concerts at the Music Pier in Ocean City, N.J.
“We performed for a Christmas tree lighting ceremony at the state capitol in Harrisburg and at a Christmas open house at the governor’s mansion,” said Esworthy. “We have also sung the national anthem numerous times for the Philadelphia Phillies and the Lancaster Barnstormers.”
In addition to the Christmas concert, the chorus performs a spring show. “We take a break for the holidays but will start rehearsals again in the spring,” noted Esworthy.
The chorus meets on Mondays at the Christiana Fire Company from 7 to 8:30 p.m. “We are always looking for new members,” said Esworthy. Anyone interested in joining the chorus may email Kusnersyk at kusnersyk@yahoo.com.

This year’s conference will once again be held at The Trust Performing Arts Center, 37 N. Market St., Lancaster, with registration starting at noon on Friday, Feb. 17, 2023. The conference will run into Friday evening and resume on Saturday, Feb. 18, ending at about 10 p.m. Poet Malcolm Guite, author of “Lifting the Veil,” will be the keynote speaker. Tickets, which are necessary to attend, may be purchased at www.squarehalobooks.com/c onferences#/2023-conference. Organizers anticipate that tickets will be available through the end of January.
This year’s conference celebrates the 25th anniversary of Square Halo Books, a publishing house Leslie was involved in founding along with her husband, Ned, and Alan and Diane Bauer, who are located in Baltimore. All this year’s speakers have written for Square Halo, which focuses on “publishing works that present contextually sensitive biblical studies … with the goal of providing materials for encouraging and equipping the saints.” “We are all about giving a platform to people who don’t have one,” said Leslie. The book “Ordinary Saints: Living Everyday Life to the Glory of God” was published in celebration of Square Halo’s anniversary.
This year, special Friday afternoon activities have been added to the event at no charge. Presentations will be made by Tom Becker of the Row House forum and author Lisa Smith, a songwriters circle will be held with Matt Wheeler, and Friday night’s featured speaker will be art historian Elissa Yukiko Weichbrodt.
On Saturday, a number of speakers will be featured. “The author Sean Smucker and Christie Purifoy will be
with us,” said Leslie, who added that there will be an emphasis on speakers from the surrounding area. “Christine Perrin, a professor at Messiah University, will speak (along with) Dan Spanjer, a historian, who is now principal at Veritas Academy,” she added. Lancaster Bible College professor Shanika Churchville will speak on “Ordinary Scholars: Justice in the Writing Classroom.” Other activities will include a round table reading of “Babette’s Feast” led by theater director Bonnie Bosso, a tea and poetry reading, a pop-up printing session, and a pub night.
Entertainment will be featured as well. “Our concert (artist) is a band called The Arcadian Wild, and they are a bluegrass band,” Leslie noted. “We feed people breakfast and lunch and a lot of snacks from local places,” she added.
Following the difficulties of COVID-19 restrictions the last few years, Leslie hopes to see attendees have a chance to gather and experience joy. “My goal is that people are refreshed,” she said. “I want to offer a gift. I envision us bringing people together looking at all of life before God and how it can be glorifying.”

Five area students were selected as recipients of the 2022 Lancaster Medical Society Foundation scholarship awards. The competitive process, which makes selections based on character, motivation, academic achievement, and financial need, included submissions from applicants throughout Lancaster County. As part of the application, students were required to write an essay explaining why they have chosen to pursue a career in medicine. The selection committee chose the awardees through a blind review process.
This year’s recipients are Launick Saint-Fort of Ephrata, Nicole Hanselman of Manheim, Hannah Kuntz from Elizabethtown, Rhea Sullivan from Landisville and Kevin Chao of Lancaster.
Saint-Fort, a trauma research coordinator, graduate of Penn State Berks and firstyear medical student at the
Pennsylvania State College of Medicine, was awarded $4,500. For Saint-Fort, whose younger years were spent as a child slave in Haiti, medical school and a potential career as a physician were beyond her wildest dreams. She noted that in childhood, she contracted various illnesses that could have been prevented with quality medical care, which was not available to her.
Hanselman, an Elmira College graduate and research specialist currently in her first year at Saint James School of Medicine in Illinois, received a $3,500 award. She explained that her passion to pursue medicine was conceived in a small orphanage in Vietnam, where she lived after losing her parents and oldest sister. Placed in the orphanage at age 7, Hanselman was assigned to care for the sickest babies, but could only do so much to ease their pain and suffering.

Christmas traditions today are mostly contained to a oneday celebration on Dec. 25, when families around the world exchange gifts and celebrate the birth of Christ. However, over 200 years ago, Colonial Americans observed the holiday in a much different fashion.
Yuletide Tours will return to Historic Rock Ford, 881 Rockford Road, Lancaster, on Tuesday, Dec. 27; Wednesday, Dec. 28; and Thursday, Dec. 29, to provide an immersive view into how Lancaster County residents celebrated Christmas in the late 18th century. The Hand Mansion at Rock Ford will be open for self-guided tours on Dec. 27 and 28 from 4 to 6 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. and on Dec. 29 from 2 to 4 p.m. and 4 to 6 p.m.
Guests will have an opportunity to walk through the historic former home of Edward Hand, which will be decorated as it would have been when Hand lived there.
Volunteers dressed in period accurate attire will be stationed throughout the house to answer questions, and hearth cookers will prepare historically accurate food in the kitchen and explain to guests what meals were customary in the old days. In the halls of the mansion, dancers will perform traditional routines from the 18th century such as Jack’s Health, Midnight Ramble and Duke of Kent’s Waltz.
For the first time, live music will be provided by harpsichordists Margaret Marsch and Faith Martin, as well as Faith’s sister, Mercy, on the violin. The musicians will perform classical pieces and traditional Yuletide carols, many of which would have been performed in the Hand Mansion while Hand lived there. Jasper Yates, the uncle of Hand’s wife, Catherine, and a close friend of Hand’s, lived in Lancaster during this time period and owned a harpsichord himself.
The Yuletide Tours will also include a scavenger hunt activity for children, and guests will have an opportunity to hear a recording of Hand, portrayed by an actor from the Theater of the Seventh Sister. In the recording,
Hand will reminisce on the Christmas of 1776, when he crossed the Delaware River with George Washington and his company.
2022 is the first year that Rock Ford will host full Yule-
tide Tours since 2019, as the event was canceled or modified due to the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 and 2021.
When the tours began over 30 years ago, they were less centered around a historically
accurate portrayal of the property and the property was decorated in a more modern fashion. Around 2005, Rock Ford began to alter the tours to give an accurate glimpse into the Christmas celebrations of the time.
“One of the reasons we do the tours after Christmas is that Dec. 25 marked the beginning of the holiday for the old English, and it would last until Jan. 6,” said Sam Slaymaker, director of Historic Rock Ford. Historically, the English observed Christmas Day strictly as a religious event and would save the festivities for the 12th day of Christmas.

Kuntz, a former medical assistant with AmeriCorps and a graduate of Rochester Institute of Technology, is a first-year student at the Pennsylvania State College of Medicine. Her passion for medicine was fostered through her volunteer experiences working with underserved populations in Lancaster city and later in Rochester, N.Y.
Sullivan, a fourth-year M.D. and Ph.D. student at the Pennsylvania College of Medicine and a graduate of Pennsylvania State University Schreyer Honors College, shared that her decision to pursue a career in medicine came after experiences she had in college, including witnessing the deaths of both a fellow college student and then a neighbor as a result of addiction.
Chao, a former medical
scribe and volunteer smoking cessation counselor, is a Saint Joseph’s University (formerly University of the Sciences) graduate and second-year student at Drexel University College of Medicine. Chao’s choice to pursue medicine grew from childhood experiences with the health care system. Born with a heart abnormality that was incredibly difficult to manage, he credits his parents, pediatrician and cardiologist for their tireless care, giving him a life that he would not otherwise have had.
Chao, Kuntz and Sullivan were all awarded $2,000 scholarships.
Founded in 1991, the Lancaster Medical Society Foundation is a 501(c)(3) organization that was formed to grant scholarships to students from Lancaster County who are accepted at or continuing a medical degree at an accredited allopathic or osteopathic medical school.
The scholarship foundation is supported by the Lancaster County medical community, through hospitals and health systems, group practices, individual medical society members, local businesses and Lancaster-area residents. Since its inception, more than $282,000 in scholarships have been given to local students.

Christmas Bird Count Announced
Since 1900, the National Audubon Society has conducted a bird census called the Christmas Bird Count with much of the leg work done by volunteers. All levels of birders can help, including backyard bird watchers. The data collected has been used for studying bird population trends, migration patterns,
and conservation policy.
The Lancaster County Bird Club will offer several opportunities to participate in the count. Interested persons will be assigned to a team with leaders who are acquainted with their areas. Backyard birders should register with the contact person before the
count to determine if their home is within the count circle and to receive instructions.
On Saturday, Dec. 17, a bird count will be held in Lititz. For details, contact Ted Nichols at 717-856-3851 or tanicholsii@gmail.com.
On Sunday, Dec. 18, a bird count will take place in
2023 Men’s Retreat
southern Lancaster County. For details, contact Derek Stoner at 484-723-3348 or derekstoner@hotmail.com.
The Christmas Bird Count for Kids will be held on Saturday, Dec. 31, in collaboration with the Lancaster County Parks Department in Lancaster County Central Park, 1 Nature’s Way,
Lancaster. It is designed to teach children about birding and volunteering as a citizen scientist. All children are required to register with the Lancaster County Parks Department by calling 717-295-2055 and must be accompanied by an adult. Adults without children are welcome to participate in this count as well.
For more details, contact John Lahr at 717-284-3497 or johnlahr324@gmail.com.
On Dec. 31, a bird count for adults will be held in Lancaster. For details, call Roger Stoner at 717-393-9030.

A note from Brent regarding “The Roar Within”...
In these events I take the guys through their identity in Christ, where do the lies come from that we buy into, and how we untangle whose lies. I call it, “declawing the lies of the enemy.” I also take the guys through the Big 5 Man-Killers that destroy every man (lack of purpose, lack of respect, anger, lust, and shame), and I do this using the Big 5 African animals tying each one of those struggles to each one of the animals. It’s a powerful way to hold their attention and give them the tools they need to defeat the enemy.

Shopping for gifts for children makes many shoppers nostalgic for their own childhoods as few adults can forget the joy of finding the perfect gift under the tree on Christmas morning. Re-creating that magic for a youngster can be as joyous for gift givers as it is for kids, but shoppers should keep several tips in mind to ensure they give toys that are as safe as they are fun.
When buying for a grandchild, niece, or nephew, shoppers should first ask the child’s parent or guardian for suggestions. These people will know which types of toys their children like, and they will also know each child’s maturity level. Some kids may not be mature enough to play with otherwise age-appropriate toys, while others may be mature beyond their years and enjoy more complex toys than their age would suggest.
Toy labels are good sources of information, but shoppers must know what to look for. The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) notes that toy labels include information about age-appropriateness (such as “Ages 3 and Up”) as well as directions regarding how to use the toy. If the instructions seem a bit complex for the child the item will be for, look for something else. Children’s toy labels also include information that consumers may not be familiar with. For example, toys labeled “ASTM F963” meet the latest safety standards
from the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission. An “ASTM D4236” label indicates the materials associated with an art toy have been reviewed and deemed safe by a toxicologist. More information about toy label requirements can be found at www.cpsc.gov. The AAP advises that electric toys should only be given to children if they include the UL label, which indicates that the toy has been certified by the global safety certification company UL.
The AAP notes that toys that are loud, shoot objects into the air or contain small pieces pose a threat to children. Toys that are too loud can damage children’s hearing, and projectiles can increase the risk of eye injuries or choking. Toys with small pieces also pose a choking risk to young children who may try to put the pieces into their mouths.
Consumers who are uncertain about the safety of a given toy, even after reading its label, should err on the side of caution and only give toys they are confident will not pose a safety risk. Even toys that may seem safe could be dangerous to kids who might otherwise seem old enough. For example, the AAP advises against giving children under age 12 hobby kits and chemistry sets. That is because such kits may contain dangerous chemicals that even pre-adolescents are not old enough to handle safely.

KPB Litter Summit Held In Lancaster
Stakeholders in the fight against litter convened on Nov. 1 and 2 for Keep Pennsylvania Beautiful’s (KPB) 2022 Litter Summit hosted by the city of Lancaster. The summit was held in coordination with the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection (PA DEP) and Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT).
The event began with a walking tour of Lancaster’s sustainable community, including two projects funded by Keep Pennsylvania Beautiful, the Tiny Cans Project and Lancaster Compost Bin Co-op Expansion project. The Tiny Cans Project provides free trash cans for
neighborhood residents to install on their porch railings to reduce littering. The Lancaster Compost Bin Co-op Expansion project allows the city to add new compost bin locations throughout the city.
Other stops on the tour included the Storm Water Rain Garden and Art Mural at Musser Park, the Urban Forestry project, and the new Bike It Lancaster Bike Share. The tour was followed by an evening reception featuring an “Upcycled Art” exhibit curated by Red Raven Art Company. Keynote speaker Danene Sorace, mayor of Lancaster, spoke about how clean and beautiful communities support strategic priorities for the
city: strong neighborhoods, safe places, sustainable economy, and sound government.
Keep America Beautiful (KAB) recognized the PA DEP and PennDOT for their support and collaboration with Keep Pennsylvania Beautiful’s programming, including Pick Up Pennsylvania and the new Young Ambassadors Program.
KAB also recognized Gov. Wolf’s office with a State Innovative
Partnership Award for the state’s first Litter Action Plan. The summit also featured the state’s new anti-littering campaign, PA Fights Dirty: Every Litter Bit Matters, which was developed as part of Gov. Wolf’s Litter Action Plan and outlines strategies for all Pennsylvanians to help in the fight against litter.
