OnNov. 11, Paradise Elementary School held its first Veterans Day assembly, honoring area residents who served or are serving in the armed forces, along with reinforcing some important safety lessons for all the students in the school.
Rick Esche, school principal, opened the ceremony by asking veterans and active military personnel in the audience to stand. Students gave the honored guests a round of applause, and Esche thanked them for attending and for their service to the country. Esche also thanked donors and those taking part in the event, including the Paradise PTO, local Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts, and the sixth-grade Braves Club. “A lot of work went into this assembly and getting veterans here,” said Esche, who went on to thank the Paradise Township Lions Club, which donated 500 tiny flags to add to the celebration. Assistant principal Jody Bradley announced that
attending armed service members and veterans would introduce themselves with the aid of some students who traversed the room with portable microphones. Among those guests were Codie McCall, a Pequea Valley High School (PVHS) graduate with the 213th Personnel Company at Fort Indiantown Gap in Annville, and Matthew Maisano,
a former Paradise Elementary student, who is with the U.S. Air Force in Harrisburg.
The school trait of the month for November was safety, and school counselor Kelly Loder presented a video on the subject of digital safety. “You guys have technology, and we want to make sure you’re being safe,” she told students. Each stu-
dent received a copy of the digital safety pledge, which encouraged ways the student could keep himself or herself safe as well as respecting others online. “Digital safety is real important,” noted Loder.
Next, Bradley asked all the students to stand for the national anthem. When that was completed,
a group of Girl Scouts and a few Boy Scouts folded the American flag while explaining the meaning of each fold. Thirteen folds are required, and each represents a principle upon which the country was founded, including life, remembrance of veterans, trust in God, and tributes to the armed forces. Once the flag was folded, taps was played.

Behind the creativity in presenting the 2022 Journey to Bethlehem event at Woodcrest Retreat, is an enduring goal to keep the tale fresh, while acknowledging its unwavering truth. “It’s the Christmas story,” said Adam Fox, See Woodcrest pg 2
Tyler Remphrey, a member of Atglen Boy Scout Troop 20, recently used his computer savvy to complete his Eagle Scout service project. Tyler created a digital map of the graveyard at St. John’s Episcopal Church, Compass, located in Gap. Using a database that he created, the church leaders can now search the name and location of graves in the cemetery.
Tyler said the project was a good way to put his computer skills to use. “I have done a lot of computer stuff throughout my life, and my Scoutmaster, (Cory Peters), thought this project would be perfect for me,” he said.

program director at Woodcrest. “It doesn’t change, but there are different ways to think it through.”
One aim of the event is to make the experience more real for attendees. “Audiences understand what the characters are going through,” said Fox. “That’s what we want to help bring to life.”
Now in its 12th year, Journey to Bethlehem gives participants the opportunity to become part of the Christmas story as they follow Mary and Joseph from the time they receive the news that Mary will give birth to the Christ child to their arrival at the stable where Christ was born and beyond. Journey will be held at the retreat center, 225 Woodcrest Drive, Ephrata, on Fridays, Dec. 9 and 16, from 6 to 8:30 p.m. and on Saturdays, Dec. 10 and 17, from 5 to 8:30 p.m. Attendees are encouraged to dress warmly and wear appropriate waterresistant shoes on the hourlong trek. Although the event is family-friendly, strollers
and those with mobility issues cannot be accommodated because of the rugged landscape.
The live Nativity is interactive in that adults and children who attend may participate in specific scenes. As they travel with the characters from the Bible, participants will witness the walk to Bethlehem, where they will experience the disappointment of finding there is no room at the inn. The journey will also take attendees to a marketplace, where they may spend a shekel to purchase raisins or crackers, and then to a field, where they will gather with shepherds to hear the angels announce Christ’s birth. Finally, visitors will arrive at a stable along with the shepherds, where they will all meet Joseph and Mary and baby Jesus. “Together they are in awe of how biblical prophecy foretold this event,” explained Fox. The final stop is now a live presentation that takes place in the palace of one of the wise men.
Fox noted that about 3,000 people attended the 2021 event. The cost to attend will be discounted for children ages 4 to 16. Children age 3 and under will be admitted for free. In addition, a special price will be available to members of an immediate family living in the same household. Reservations may be made at www.woodcrest retreat.org/events/journey. Readers who have questions may call 717-738-2233.
All funds raised by the event will benefit the ministry of Woodcrest, a nonprofit retreat and camp center that serves more than 1,900 children each year. In the case of inclement weather, those planning to attend Journey to Bethlehem should check the aforementioned website for information.

In the weeks leading up to the assembly, students had provided photos of family members who were veterans.
The sixth-grade Braves Club put together a slideshow of the photos accompanied by the various armed forces hymns. Students were encouraged to raise their hand when a photo of a family member flashed across the screen.
Esche then introduced Paradise PTO president Katie Knaub, who had a gift for all the students. “Who is Paradise Proud?” asked Esche. “Everyone is,” he responded, noting that the
PTO raises funds for a number of projects. “Every student and staff member will get a symbol of our Paradise Proud … a new T-shirt.” Esche announced that the first Paradise Proud Day would be held Nov. 18 and that each student was encouraged to wear his or her new red shirt that day. “We will give these out every year. It will be a tradition here,” said Esche.

Outdoor Holiday Decorating Tips Offered
The holiday season is here, but home and business owners still have time to plan and execute an outdoor lighting display. According to Neil Brenneman of Christmas Decor of Lancaster, a franchise member of the Christmas Decor network, the key to deocorating is having a plan. To create a plan that is right for local homeowners or businesses within a budget, he offered several pointers.
Start by finding a decor focal point. Identify the property’s most attractive features - a porch, the front door, some shrubs or a perfect tree - and focus attention there with garlands, greenery and lights.
Then complete the look by enhancing other areas of the property. Outline windows or rooflines with lights or tuck
hints of color into the landscape to complement the focal point design.
Brenneman recommended keeping the decor simple and knowing when to stop decorating. Too many themes and colors will detract from the focal point. He noted that a clean, uncluttered display is more attractive, safer and more cost-effective.
Members of the Christmas Decor Franchise Network have been decorating homes and businesses since 1986 and now create outdoor holiday displays in more than 350 markets in 49 states and Canada each holiday season. For more information about Christmas Decor, contact Brenneman at 717318-1941 or christmasdecor oflancaster@gmail.com, or visit www.christmasdecor.net.

He began his project by visiting the church, which has a graveyard that dates back to the 1700s and is still used today. For years, the church kept several large paper maps and filing cabinets of papers with information on most of the graves.
“They have a lot of old (graves), including pre-Revolutionary War ones,” said Tyler. “I started by asking what information they would need and how they wanted it to look, and I did research on how I could make what they wanted a reality.”
Since the church has limited funds, Tyler found a suit-
able program on QGIS (Quantum Geographic Information System), a free service. “It’s an open source, so people post information about it. It is a way to visualize data,” he said. “I had to teach myself how to use the program and make the map and give the church guidance on how to use the software.”
Tyler created a Google Doc and an instructional video for each job that the church needed. He also ran two in-person
sessions to help teach people at the church how to use the program.
“I gave them a framework and guidance on how to use the system I made, and they filled in the information (about the graves),” he said, noting the graveyard has nearly 3,000 graves.
A team of fellow Scouts helped the church by visiting the graveyard several times and collecting information about some of the graves. The Scouts put the information into a binder so the church’s cemetery group could put the details into the database.
“With an Eagle Scout project, you have to have a field work phase. A lot of the graves are newer and don’t have a lot of data on them,” Tyler explained. “We went out with data sheets and went through about 100 graves or so over a course of a few days, (listing) plot number, what the gravestone is made out of (and other characteristics).”
Using the database that Tyler created, the church can now search for all of the veterans’ graves, search a specific name, click on a certain grave on the map and find out who is there and locate unsold graves, among other features.
Tyler’s Eagle Scout Court of Honor ceremony was held on Oct. 30 at the Pomeroy Fire Company. He also received accolades from Atglen Mayor Darren Hodorovich and state Rep. Dan Williams.
Tyler, a senior at Octorara Junior-Senior High School, said he is unsure of his plans after graduation, but knows that he will pursue a career that involves computers. “Computers is a wide field and I don’t know where I will wind up, but it will definitely be with a keyboard in my hand,” he said.
Dance Company Plans Program
The Lancaster Bible College (LBC) Dance Company will perform a short dance program at 7 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 10. The event will be held in Good Shepherd Chapel, located on LBC’s campus at 901 Eden Road, Lancaster.
LBC students will dance contemporary, jazz, and ballet pieces by professional choreographers Emily Kline, Nicole Ridgway and Danika Steinmetz. Additionally, each choreographer’s company, the EMME, Catalyst, and Durang Dance companies, respectively, will guest perform a piece from its repertoire.

Stories of historical interest from Historical Society of Salisbury Township, submitted byLeonaBaker, president
Weaving is really just an interlacing of threads. The longitudinal threads running down the fabric are the warp, and the lateral threads running across the width of the fabric are called the weft. A loom weaves these threads together to create fabric. Looms hold the warp threads in place while the weft threads are woven through
them. The term jacquard is the way the pattern is woven, not the specific pattern itself.
Because a pattern is woven into the fabric, each yarn can be solution-dyed, giving it more fade resistance than topically-dyed yarns. In contrast, patterns that are stamped or printed on the surface of the fabric are especially prone to fading. Today, jacquard is the weaving method of choice for most who buy fabric, be it cotton, polyester, wool, silk or acrylic. This was not always so.
For centuries, patterned fabrics, called brocades, were so hard to make that they were found in only the wealthiest homes, most often as clothing or tapestries. Symbols of status and wealth, they were woven by hand - a long, tedious and backbreaking work usually done by men who labored long hours to produce a few feet a day.
Around the turn of the 19th century, one of these laborers was Joseph-Marie Jacquard.
Trying to develop a less labor-intensive method of producing fabric, Jacquard’s dream was to efficiently create fabric with those same artistic designs. After years of adaptive experimentation and redesigning other earlier inventions, he created the Jacquard loom.

Resembling the much later invented player piano, Jacquard’s loom featured designed wooden cards - holes punched with the desired woven pattern. When his special foot pedal attached to the loom was depressed, it elevated a long row of a set of warp threads in a predesigned pattern. This meant that the pattern would be woven directly into the fabric. Initially called code weaving, it changed the way patterned fabrics were cre-
ated forever. This innovative idea would later be adapted and used in computer technology.
The Historical Society of Salisbury Township has a double bed-sized woven coverlet in its collection. It is from the Spring Garden Hotel, presently a private home located on Old Philadelphia Pike in Spring Garden. While the society members do not have an exact date of its origin, they believe it is from the 1850s when the hotel was a fixture in the community.

Church Plans Movie Night, Hymn Sing
Pequea Church, 5482 Old Philadelphia Pike, Gap, has planned two events, starting with an indoor movie night on Friday, Dec. 9, at 6:30 p.m. The church will show “The Santa Clause” and provide
popcorn, and hot chocolate.
An old-fashioned hymn sing and a presentation from a special speaker will take place on Sunday, Dec. 11, at 3 p.m. Requests will be taken for hymns. The speaker, the Rev. Jeff Byerly, came to faith in
Jesus at Pequea Church and has dedicated the past 30 years to pastoral ministry. This event is a part of the church’s continuing celebration of its 145th anniversary.
