n unprecedented times, two nonprofit entities in the Village of Intercourse are joining forces to help each other experience the joy of the season. “We’re trying to get the word out that if people shop at Ten Thousand Villages in Intercourse any time on Friday, Dec. 4, between 9 a.m. and 8 p.m., and mention the Pequea Valley Public Library (PVPL), a portion of the proceeds from all those purchases will be donated to the library,” said Catherine O’Sullivan, director of PVPL. O’Sullivan praised Tavia Bargmann, manager of Ten Thousand Villages, 3523 Old Philadelphia Pike, Intercourse, saying “Tavia is just wonderful.” O’Sullivan noted that Bargmann is always thinking of the library. “I try to promote them,” O’Sullivan added, stating that Bargmann had set up a display of Ten Thousand Villages products for people to see at the library’s 31 Center St., Intercourse, location. The fundraiser will be part of a twoday celebration that will be held in the Village of Intercourse on Friday, Dec. 4, and Saturday, Dec. 5, during special holiday hours. Open houses,

Earlier this fall, Paradise Elementary School counselor Kelly Loder and facility dog Houdini were walking through the halls at the school when they heard one of the students who was upset. “I said, ‘How about we have a break with Houdini?’” recalled Loder. The student came out of the classroom to pet the dog. “He went back in and did well the rest of the day,” recalled Loder. See Facility Dog pg 8

On Dec. 4, The Brass Ornaments will perform at Kitchen Kettle Village, 3529 Old Philadelphia Pike, Intercourse, from 5 to 7 p.m. From 5:30 to 7 p.m., Grace Point Church of Paradise will hold a live Nativity at Kitchen Kettle. Santa and Mrs. Claus may be found in front of the Jam & Relish Kitchen in Kitchen Kettle Village from 5 to 8 p.m. for contactless photos. From 7 to 8:30 p.m., the Brave Sounds Youth Choir from Pequea Valley Intermediate School will perform. There will also be s’more making for a fee with a complimentary cup of hot chocolate. On Dec. 5, the Clauses will return to the Jam & Relish Kitchen at Kitchen Kettle for photos from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. From 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., the Trilogy Brass Quartet will perform at Kitchen Kettle, and from 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m., musician Ian Carroll will perform. From 1 to 3 p.m., Ron’s Mutts Holiday Handbell Ringers will play. Candy making demonstrations will be held all day at Pepper Lane Fudge & Sweets at Kitchen Kettle Village. Last year, organizers of Journey to Bethlehem, an annual fundraiser for Woodcrest Retreat, changed the script a little by having participants meet up with a Roman guard on the journey. This year, a few more changes are planned. Some of those changes are related to COVID-19 restrictions, but others are designed to enhance the experience for those who attend. Journey to Bethlehem differs from other live Nativity presentations because participants are given the opportunity to become part of the Christmas story as they follow Mary and Joseph to the stable where Christ was born. The 10th annual event will be held at the retreat center, 225 Woodcrest Drive, Ephrata, on Fridays, Dec. 11 and 18, from 6 to 8 p.m. and on Saturdays, Dec. 12 and 19, from 5 to 8 p.m. Adults and children who attend Journey to Bethlehem may participate in specific scenes leading up to and including Christ’s birth. As they travel with the characters from the Bible, par-
ticipants will witness the angel’s visit to Mary and then walk to Bethlehem, where they will experience, along with Mary and Joseph, the disappointment of finding there is no room at the inn. The journey will also take attendees to a marketplace, where they may spend a shekel to purchase raisins or crackers, and then to a field, where they will gather with shepherds to hear the angels announce Christ’s birth. Finally, visitors will arrive at a stable to see the Christ

Houdini’s different cues. Loder explained that a facility dog is trained to respond to specific cues that will support the students. Among the cues Houdini knows are “visit,” to which he responds by resting his head in a child’s lap; “lap,” which tells him he can climb into a child’s lap to be petted; and “squish,” which tells him to lie across the stomach of a child who is lying on the floor. “He provides pressure to help calm them,” explained Loder. Because Loder is now Houdini’s owner, she was also taught about dog health, including first aid, how to tell if he is unwell, and how to keep him at his ideal weight. Two other teachers’ aides from the school are now training to be handlers as well. Loder first encountered service/facility dogs working in an educational setting while in graduate school at William & Mary in Williamsburg, Va. “I had a fellow counseling student who had a service dog,” recalled Loder. Seeing the positive way the future counselors responded to a dog they were not even allowed to pet amazed Loder, and she knew she was interested in working with one in the future. Loder began working at Paradise Elementary in August of 2016. In 2018, she asked administrators about the possibility. See Facility Dog pg 12

Her research led her to Lampeter-Strasburg School District, where she learned about facility dogs trained by Susquehanna. She was so impressed that she moved forward with an application. Because Houdini is owned by Loder but works at the school, the $5,000 needed to bring him to the school had to be raised by the community. Fundraising activities included Change Wars, which raised $800 before school closed due to COVID-19 restrictions. Online donations and business contributions helped as well, and Loder held a birthday fundraiser. In addition to the initial cost, funds raised helped cover training supplies and Houdini’s vest and collar.

Throughout September, the Central Pennsylvania Food Bank encouraged the community to contribute to its fourth annual Hunger Action Month Virtual Food Drive. To bolster collection efforts, Hunger Action Month presenting sponsor PSECU pledged to match the month’s total contributions up to $10,000. The response, which came from more than 675 local individuals, businesses, and organizations, came in at over $52,426. This amount, coupled with PSECU’s $10,000 matching contribution, brings the fundraising total to over $62,426. Each dollar donated helps the Central Pennsylvania Food Bank provide six meals for those facing food insecurity throughout its 27-county service area. That means that the money raised will provide 374,561 meals to people in need. The Central Pennsylvania Food Bank reported that as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, thousands of families

A virtual food drive is basically the same food drive concept people have always known - collecting resources for those in need - but with a twist, thanks to smart technology. It is an online initiative through which individuals and groups can visit an interactive grocery store that simulates how monetary donations efficiently purchase food for hungry families, veterans, and seniors. Benefits of the virtual model include time savings for busy donors, no expiration dates on food stock, and a supply of funding that can be deployed as needed throughout the year. In addition to its $10,000 virtual food drive matching donation, PSECU provided the Central Pennsylvania Food Bank with a $5,000 sponsorship, bringing the credit union’s total Hunger Action Month contribution to $15,000, the equivalent of 90,000 meals.
