Christmas In Paradise Planned By Ann Mead Ash
A variety of activities will help to kick off the holiday season in Paradise on Saturday, Dec. 7. The Paradise Township Lions Club will hold its annual Christmas Market in the Together Community Center. Leacock Presbyterian Church has scheduled Trees, Treats ’n’ Treasures. The Paradise Leaman Place Fire Company will hold a vendor fair, and the Paradise Township tree lighting ceremony will be held at the township building. The Christmas Market will be held at the community center, 3293 Lincoln Highway East, Paradise, from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. More than 30 vendors selling items including original art, photographs, candles, handmade soap, and crafts will fill the gymnasium, along with representatives of Mary Kay, Thirty-One Bags, Tupperware, and Scentsy. Sing For The Moment Choir Schedules Concert By Ann Mead Ash
Representatives of a number of Paradise organizations have joined together for Christmas in Paradise on Dec. 7. The Paradise Township Lions Club, Leacock Presbyterian Church, and Paradise Leaman Place Fire Company will all host activities during the day. In the evening, the community Christmas tree will be lit at the Paradise Township Building.
Working together with Candy Yingling at the Alzheimer’s Association Greater Pennsylvania Chapter, Faith Hoover, director of Adult Day Services and coordinator of the Memory Loss Support Group at Landis Homes, devised a way for area Alzheimer’s patients who have an interest in singing to rehearse together and present two yearly concerts at Landis Homes. Hoover asked Clair Leaman, conductor of the “Messiah” Sing-Alongs at Westminster Presbyterian in Lancaster and in Chester County, to work with the group, and Sing for the Moment held its first holiday concert in December 2018. Commercial signs throughout the home advertise businesses from Pennsylvania and other parts of the country. Other signs of industry include a Stimpson scale in the dining room and a barber pole in the kitchen. Chalkboard paint on several closet doors in the bedrooms and cabinet doors in the kitchen are vestiges of the Andersens’ bed-and-breakfast in Massachusetts. They provide contrast to the white walls and ceilings that are present in nearly every room. Among other interesting pieces, including an ancient work bench, Ken’s office contains a corner wardrobe that was made in Vermont, but the Andersens bought it in California. Ticketholders will be able to view the first and second floors of the house, which will be decorated for Christmas. Visitors might want to count the many white Christmas stockings located throughout the home and take note of how many variations are possible when working with only one color. The stockings were an acquisition for the bed-and-breakfast. The Andersens are excited about the Holiday Home Tour, as their bed-and-breakfast was part of a similar tour. “ We had a blast,” Marcia recalled. “When Lorna (Mentzer) came to the

Ken and Marcia Andersen are newcomers to Pennsylvania, but it appears Marcia has been preparing for the move for most of their adult lives. Ticketholders may view Marcia’s love of antiques during the Strasburg Holiday Home Tour on Saturday, Dec. 7, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Marcia is a registered nurse, but she took 20 years off from the medical field while she raised their four children. During that time, she developed and honed an interest in antiques. The family was living in California at the time, but they eventually moved to Colorado, and then to Massachusetts. Through all of those moves, Marcia brought favorite pieces of furniture and décor with her. Many of those items now fill the Andersens’ home at 43 E. Main St., Strasburg. Until the Andersens bought the house last year, the home had been in the same family for 100 years. In addition to a modest living room, the first floor contains a bedroom, a laundry room and bathroom, and a dining room that flows into the kitchen. The bedroom occupies the area that was once an ice cream and candy shop. Marcia noted that the house was originally a log cabin when it was built in 1770. Clapboard siding was installed in 1843. She noted that the proceeds will be used to continue the restoration of the 1790 Shroy House, 124 S. Decatur St., Strasburg, as well as to sustain the society’s operations. The society maintains an archive of postcards, pictures, documents, furniture, artifacts, and other items relating to Strasburg’s history, and it presents monthly lectures throughout the school year. Nine homes and three churches are slated to be open as part of the Holiday Home Tour. The headquarters of the tour will be First Presbyterian Church of

Fraternal Order of Police, Red Rose Lodge 16 of Lancaster County is participating in the Pennsylvania Fraternal Order of Police (FOP) Christmas Program, which is an annual initiative that provides toys and other gifts to the families of police officers in need. The program supports families that have experienced a house fire, flooding, or serious injury, as well as the children of fallen police officers. Did Yeshua (Jesus) lie? You must decide this for yourself. There can be no middle ground, either He lied or He told the truth. If you think He was an outright liar there is no reason to read any further. You might as well put the paper down and hope that you are 100% correct. If you aren’t you are doomed. If on the other hand, you believe that Yeshua did not lie, the following is for you. Yeshua said that He was The Almighty One’s Son and that He and His Father are one (John 5:17-18, 10:30 & 38 & 17:1). He said, “I am the way, the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me” (John 14:6). Also, “He that does not honor the Son does not honor the Father who sent Him” (John 5:23). Also, “The Father judges no man but has entrusted all judgment to the Son” (John 5:22). “Whoever believes in Him is not condemned; but whoever does not believe is condemend already, because he does not believe in the name of the Son of The Almighty One” (John 3:18). In Addition, the Father loves the Son and has given all things into His hand. “Whoever believes in the Son has eternal life, but whoever rejects the Son will not see life, for the wrath of The Almighty One remains on him” (John 3:36) “Do not be deceived; The Almighty One cannot be mocked. A man reaps what he sows” (Galatians 6:7). “Trust in the L-rd with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding, in all your ways acknowledge Him and He will make your paths straight. Be not wise in your own eyes; fear the L-rd and shun evil” (Proverbs 3:5-7). “The fear of the L-rd is the beginning of knowledge; but fools despise wisdom and discipline” (Proverbs 1:7). “There is a way that seems right to a man, but in the end it leads to death” (Proverbs 16:25). “He who conceals his sins does not prosper; but whoever confessses and renounces them finds mercy” (Proverbs 28:13). “Who has gone up to heaven and come down? This year’s concert will be held on Sunday, Dec. 1, at 2 p.m. at Landis Homes in the West Bethany Chapel, 1001 E. Oregon Road, Lititz. Admission is free, and the public is welcome to attend. The first part of the vocal concert will include a variety of Christmas favorites, followed by a performance by the St. Stephen Reformed Church of New Holland handbell choir under the direction of Clair’s wife, Charlene. The final segment of the vocal concert will feature a number of songs from “The Sound of Music.” Several vocalists will be spotlighted during the concert, including Shelby Swartley and David Harnish on “The Holly and the Ivy” and Bernie Linn on “O Holy Night.” Kristen Albert will be the featured vocalist on “The Sound of Music,” and Lois Good will be in the spotlight for “DoRe-Mi.” Carl Good will be the vocalist on “Edelweiss.” Other familiar tunes in the presentation will include “Hark! The Herald Angels Sing,” “I Saw Three Ships,” and “What Child Is This?” The nearly 50 choir members begin one-hour weekly rehearsals eight weeks prior to the concert. Clair creates a song book that includes all the song lyrics in large print with the pages decorated with artwork created by students at Conestoga Christian School in Morgantown. According to Clair, each prac-
tice is an engaging experience. “It is more a journey than a practice. We have fun together,” he said. He noted that recently the wife of one singer noticed a change in her husband when practice ended. “She said that he had been very cantankerous when he came in to sing,” recalled Clair, who added that the woman said her husband’s mood was much improved at the end. “It was like turning a page,” said Clair. In addition to Clair, Hoover, and Yingling, the Sing for the Moment organizing committee includes Swartley, a social worker with Lancaster General Health Penn Medicine Alzheimer’s and Memory Care Program; Deb Laws-Landis of Landis Homes; pianist Sandy Smoker; Ann Fulmer; and Donna Becker. “We have had standing roomonly crowds each time (we have held a concert),” said Clair of the fall 2018 and spring 2019 events, which he added are often emotional for members of the audience. “There are a lot of tears shed when (relatives) see their family members engaged (and singing).” Individuals who would like more information about the concert or choir participation may call 717-568-2595, ext. 1100, or email cyingling@alz.org. Journey to Bethlehem differs from other live Nativity presentations because participants are given the opportunity to become part of the Christmas story as they follow Mary and Joseph to the stable where Christ was born. This year, the ninth event will be held at the retreat center, 225 Woodcrest Drive, Ephrata, on Fridays, Dec. 13 and 20, from 6 to 8 p.m. and on Saturdays, Dec. 14 and 21, from 5 to 8 p.m. Adults and children who attend Journey to Bethlehem may participate in specific scenes leading up to and including Christ’s birth. As they travel with the characters from the Bible, participants will witness the angel’s visit to Mary and then walk to Bethlehem, where they will experience, along with Mary and Joseph, the disappointment of finding there is no room at the inn. The journey will also take attendees to a marketplace, where they may spend a shekel to purchase raisins or crackers, and then to a field, where they will gather with shepherds to hear the angels announce Christ’s birth. Finally, visitors will arrive at a stable to see the Christ Child in the manger. The path

Children age 3 and under will be admitted for free. In addition, a family price will be available to members of an immediate family living in the same household. All funds raised by the event will benefit the ministry of Woodcrest, a nonprofit retreat and camp center that serves more than 1,400 children each year. Camps run during June, July, and August. College Inducts Hall-Of-Famers Thaddeus Stevens College of Technology inducted six members into its Athletics Hall of Fame on Oct. 18 in a ceremony at the Jones Conference Center. Inductees were honored at a special ceremony and recognized at halftime during the college’s annual homecoming football game. One script change this year will have the visitors meeting up with security along the path. “Visitors will be confronted by a Roman guard, and they will be stopped by him,” said Fox. “There will be some drama there.” As in the past, visitors will begin the journey by registering for the census and paying their “tax,” which is the admission fee. Visitors will then ride by wagon to the area where the first scene will take place. A moderate amount of walking on uneven terrain along trails is required to complete the journey. Attendees are encouraged to dress warmly and wear appropriate waterresistant shoes on the hour-long trek. Although the event is family-friendly, strollers and those with mobility issues cannot be accommodated because of the rugged landscape. A large number of people have attended Journey to Bethlehem over the eight years it has been held. Fox noted that in spite of some inclement weather on two of the event nights last year, more than 2,000 people attended. More than 17,000 have participated since Woodcrest began holding the fundraiser. Some families have driven

Veritas Academy, 26 Hillcrest Ave., Leola, will host a College Financial Aid Workshop on Wednesday, Dec. 4, at 5:30 p.m. The event is open to the public. Parents of high school students are especially encouraged to attend. The event will address the following questions: What does the financial aid process for collegebound students look like? How do colleges determine eligibility, and what are the categories and types of aid available? How can one be sure they have correctly completed their financial aid application to get the best possible result? Sonya Mann-McFarlane will explain the college financial aid process and highlight what parents need to know in order to be prepared to file the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). She is the Lancaster access partner for Pennsylvania Higher Education Assistance Agency. During the latter part of the workshop from 6 to 7 p.m., parents will be guided through the FAFSA application process. puts out puzzles and games. “We made a plan for the Care Team to make the decorations for the meal,” said Brown, who fashioned a model placemat for team members to duplicate in addition to the turkeys. The placemats were decorated with turkeys made from hand tracings, a poem, and the signature of the team member who created it. “I like using handprints because they are personal and simple,” said Brown. Another craft the team has completed was creating sunshine boxes for those who are ill. Team members also cut out curriculum for the literacy liaisons who work with children age 5 and under. The liaisons have their offices in The Factory. On Nov. 19, Care Team members were at The Factory from 2 to 4 p.m. to complete a craft with the seventh- through 12th-grade students who attend The Factory’s after-school program. “Youth center students come to work on homework at that time,” said Brown. McDonald’s Team Members Receive Scholarships

Former Octorara High School students Samantha Wood, Allie Townsend, and Dania Zavala Garcia, all employees at an independently owned McDonald’s restaurant located at 5328 Lincoln Highway, Gap, were recently awarded a $2,500-$3,000 McDonald’s
The Junior League of Lancaster (JLL) will accept applications for the 2019 Deborah P. Altman Outstanding Youth Volunteer Award. Named for Deborah P. Altman, past president of JLL, the award recognizes a young person who demonstrates exceptional interest, leadership, and involvement in volunteerism as well as inspires his or her peers to volunteer in their communities. Altman was known for her commitment to volunteering, her love of children, and her service to the community. All award applications must be received by Monday, March 16, 2020. Winners will be notified by Friday, April 17, 2020, and the award presentation will take place Monday, May 4, 2020. Applicants must be residents of Lancaster County; be ages 16
National Employee Scholarship Award as part of the company’s Archways to Opportunity program. They were selected to receive this honor for their outstanding contributions, scholastic achievements, and community involvement. Owner/operator Stephen Arnold of the McDonald’s in Gap recommended the three students to receive this scholarship. Wood joined the McDonald’s restaurant team in September 2018. She is attending Messiah College in
Mechanicsburg. Townsend joined the McDonald’s restaurant team in November 2015. Currently, she is enrolled at Pennsylvania College of Art & Design and is majoring in graphic design. Zavala Garcia joined the McDonald’s restaurant team in July 2016. She is attending the University of Pittsburgh in Bradford and majoring in nursing and hopes to pursue a career as a registered nurse. McDonald’s and many of its independent franchisees offer a range of education benefits through the Archways to Opportunity program, providing eligible U.S. employees an opportuni-
ty to earn a high school diploma, receive upfront college tuition assistance, access free education advising services, and learn English as a second language. In April, McDonald’s Corporation announced it will allocate $150 million over five years to the education program. This investment will provide almost 400,000 U.S. restaurant employees with accessibility to the program, as the company will also lower eligibility requirements from nine months to 90 days of employment and drop weekly shift minimums from 20 hours to 15 hours. The project consisted of a sixstory overbuild and expansion of Lancaster General Hospital’s existing Stauffer building, which occupies the northeast corner of the hospital’s site. Benchmark was able to successfully coordinate steel delivery to the site to continue building while alternating with concrete delivery to pour the completed decking as the building rose. James Craft & Son Inc. was hired to perform the mechanical piping and HVAC for the vertical expansion and received many deliveries at its own warehouse to transport to the jobsite. Working in an occupied facility next to highly sensitive areas and minimizing the disruption to the hospital staff’s ability to treat patients was the highest priority.
