Pequea Valley Girls’ Team Debuts at State Championships

including senior captains Aubrey Ressler and Olivia Zook, who is on crutches and missed competing in the meet; Abby Conover, junior; Mia Nordhoff, sophomore; and Reagan, Rachel Leaman, Annika Wanner and Belle Eby, all freshmen.
“The program has been in existence for six years. We have never gone as a team to states,” explained head coach Keith Andrew. “We have some girls go individually, but we never made it as a whole team.”

“It’s a great opportunity for us to give it back to our local community and teach this group of fifth-graders about what service looks like,” stated Salisbury Elementary School teacher Matt Rogers when describing the students’ recent volunteer effort at Blessings of Hope.
“Hopefully, it will be a lifelong trend that we can start in their 10- and 11-year-old lives.”
In addition to Rogers, the students were accompanied to Blessings of Hope in Ephrata on Oct. 28 by teacher Anita Girvin and parent volunteers. This is the third time that Salisbury Elementary School students volunteered at the organization as part of a community service project.
“My family and I have been volunteering there for a few years before we started taking our fifth-graders there,” said Girvin.

“For most of the girls, this was the first experience at a state meet except Aubrey Ressler, who is a senior,” he added. “This is her fourth appearance at a state meet. She has competed as an individual for three years.”
Reagan finished seventh at states, and the girls’ team finished in sixth place. “I was extremely proud of all of their efforts at the state meet. We had six girls with no state-level cross-country experience, (plus) Aubrey, and they handled the pressure like an experienced program,” said Andrew.

junior (who will) all return next year.”
To qualify for states, the team took part in the Lancaster-Lebanon League Cross Country Championship held in South Hills Park, Lebanon, where it placed second, followed by the PIAA District Championship at Big Spring High School in Newville, where the team was crowned champion and Reagan won the individual race.
Unlike a track meet, cross-country involves running on natural surfaces like grass and sometimes on uneven terrain. At Pequea Valley Secondary School, the course goes around the practice fields by the old
Cross-country competitors also travel longer distances. This requires competitors to pace themselves over the course. “You have to figure it out,” said Mia. “Some people on the team are really good at getting out super fast and pulling back a little. Other people go out a tiny bit slower but build up the speed gradually.”
“Sometimes the mental part is really hard,” added Rachel. “Sometimes it can be hard running on hills since it’s not completely flat and powering through especially at the end.”

The team members pointed out that they began preparing for the season the day that school ended in June. “We put in summer mileage; that definitely built us to be a top team because we have been doing so much work,” Mia shared.
Abby added that she has been on another team, but the PV one is like no other.
“This team prioritized being together as a team more than I have seen before,” she said, noting that the girls took part in team-building activities prior to states, which included previewing the course and dinner. “(We did) a course walk. We ate pasta together. It’s small things, but the small things build up. We all practice together.”

Andrew said that the team has been a pleasure to coach, crediting Aubrey’s leadership. “Aubrey could take this group of girls and do exactly what I had been doing because she knows the routine,” he stated. “I give them their workouts, but what they put into their workout is what they get out of their workout. They have worked extremely hard, and I think they take tremendous pride in their accomplishments.”
The girls’ team was honored with a send-off parade on Oct. 31, which traveled throughout the Pequea Valley Secondary School. The parade was the first one held at the new school building. It was led by members of the high school marching band and included team members, Andrew and coach Bliss Strauss.
“This whole season has been building up to this,” said Mia. “At the beginning of the season, we were ranked No. 1 in the district, but then we fell back and another team got ahead of us. That really boosted our motivation to do as good as we did at districts. It was really important for us to maintain a positive attitude because if we didn’t have that, we wouldn’t have done as good as we did.”

“I like how (Blessings of Hope) organizes things and their structure.”
According to www .blessingsofhope.com, the agency partners with food suppliers that have surplus food. Volunteers help process the food, and partner organizations distribute the food to people in need.
“They take in these donations, and they use them to supply their (store) in Lancaster city, and with what remains, they make Hands of Hope Boxes,” Rogers said. According to the previously mentioned website, the boxes contain fresh and shelf-stable groceries. Ministries, businesses and individuals can order boxes from Blessings of Hope to distribute.
Volunteers generally work in three-hour shifts.
“They cut that to fit into our school day. By the time (the students) got their hands washed and hair nets on, it was about one hour and 40 minutes (of volunteering),”
Rogers said, noting that all volunteers are given a voucher to use at the Blessings of Hope facility in Lancaster.
During their volunteer shift, the students sorted potatoes and green beans and were given an opportunity to tour the facility. “They had a couple of pallets of potatoes. We put them in plastic baggies and put them in another location,”
explained Girvin. “While one group was doing a tour, another group was going through green beans or potatoes. They liked being able to (rotate).”
In previous years, the students sorted items like limes and strawberries.
“They have something reasonable for them to do,” said Girvin. “We pulled out the moldy stuff, and that gets composted. Anything that can be saved gets packed and distributed.”
The teachers said the recent volunteer service is part of the school’s ongoing effort to perform acts of community service. “(It is) empathy through experience,” said Rogers. “We try to do some things in-house, and this was a grander way to support our community outside the four walls of our building. We’re just trying to have kids act with care.”
The school has also held food drives for The Factory Ministries, and Girvin sponsors the Girvin’s Gardeners program that meets weekly to propagate and grow plants. Some plants are placed in installations throughout the school. “We have a Kindness Club that is part of sixth grade,” Rogers added. “Our building prioritizes service. We continue to reinforce what we care about.”
The students also had fun while volunteering. “They didn’t even realize they were working,” Girvin added.

Offered for sale will be wreaths, candles, jewelry, holiday decor, soaps, candles, crocheted and sewn items, pottery and pet items. New additions this year will be a vendor offering homemade, hand-sliced beef jerky and Revolution Bees, offering honey and mead. Other vendors will include Burnt Timbers Winery; Spring House Spirits; PhillyMead; Flour Girl Breads; Rosie’s Kettle Corn; Karen Shades of Glass; and Sunshine Hives, which will offer honey.
Food items offered for sale will include homemade chicken corn soup; chili; gourmet chicken salad; kettle corn; quiches; and homemade baked goods, including nut rolls. “This year we are adding sausage, pepper and onion sandwiches,” Dagney noted.
Santa and the Parkesburg Grinch will stop by for a visit and sit for pictures. Santa will be on hand from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., and the Parkesburg Grinch will be available from 11:45 a.m. to 1:15 p.m. A nominal fee will be charged for the photos. Face painting will also be offered for children.
Visitors can enter to win door prizes throughout the day. Winners do not have to be present to claim their prize. “Each of our crafters donates an item, so we will have more than 50 different prizes throughout the day,” Dagney said.
Attendees will have an opportunity to win a turkey
for Thanksgiving. No purchase is necessary. “When people walk in, they will get a free ticket for a chance to win a free turkey,” Dagney explained. “They will have to go on a ‘turkey hunt’ and search for the turkey container to put their ticket in.”
There will also be an opportunity to win baskets through a random drawing. The baskets were created by church groups such as the adult choir and the Young at Heart group, as well as the church’s youth groups, which will also provide assistance during the craft show and with setup on Friday night.
Proceeds from the craft fair will support the church. More information about the craft fair, including photos of the various crafts, is available at the “OLC Annual Craft Fair 2025” Facebook event page. Those with questions may contact Dagney at jdagney@olcchurch.org.
