Participants will be asked to sign in when they arrive, and they will be assigned a number. “When you come in that day, you will sign in - just your first name. You will put your clothes in (the washer and dryer), and we will put the

Mowday said that he spoke recently with a single mother, who noted that it costs her close to $15 to wash her clothing during one visit. “They can spend that money

Fundraisers are the lifelines of nonprofits. But this one feels different, this one feels critical, this one feels urgent.
This one feels crucial to the future of Bird-in-Hand United Methodist Church.
“It’s a fundraiser to support our church itself,” said Audrey Miller, who’s been the president of Bird-in-Hand United Methodist Church’s United Women of Faith for 15 years. “We have a 250-year-old church, and there are so many expenses. Our group works throughout the year to keep our church functioning. We’re just

CMBC Pastor To Retire After More Than 20 Years of Service
BY FRANCINE FULTON
Jim Davis, the pastor of administration and ministries at Calvary Monument Bible Church (CMBC) in Paradise has spent the last 22 years serving the church. Through the years, his duties have included everything from leading various ministries and coordinating the staff to overseeing the maintenance of the church cemetery. “I preach five to six times per year; I have done weddings, baptisms and served Communion. I have done everything here but lead the choir,” he said with a smile.
Davis recently announced his retirement from CMBC, and he will be recognized during a retirement service set for Sunday, Nov. 9.
“(When I started), I was supposed to be the administrative pastor,” he explained. “I was overseeing building and grounds and the finances of the church - anything administrative in nature. Within six months, the role changed. I led the children’s ministry when we didn’t have a children’s director and at one time an adult ministry. I didn’t lead the women’s ministry, but I did oversee it for a short period of time.”
Davis, along with lead pastor Chris Lenhart, lead a large congregation at CMBC, which includes a mix of age groups ranging from senior citizens to young families. “On a Wednesday night, we will have some 80 children to Awana,” Davis reported. “Our church is averaging over 300 on a Sunday morning.”

“We’re just going year by year,” continued Miller. “If we don’t, the church will close. We’re trying to keep our church afloat. We have a wonderful bazaar, and it helps.”
Bird-in-Hand United Methodist’s United Women of Faith will present this year’s edition of its annual Crafters Bazaar on Saturday, Nov. 8, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m at the church, 2620 Old Philadelphia Pike, Lancaster.

people that we can’t organize big events. When we have opportunities, we try to invite groups in.”
Currently, Bird-in-Hand United Methodist Church is supported by a congregation of 25 faithful and active members. From that congregation, 10 are also members of the United Women of Faith.

“I like the fact that we’re able to welcome all these people from the community to see what we’re all about,” said Miller. “We’re an old, traditional church located in the middle of this Amish population. It’s a chance for us to interact with the community, and we don’t get those chances very often, so we try to make the most of it. We would just like the community to know we’re still here, and we’re still trying. We want people to spend a Sunday morning with us.”
The bazaar is named for the 19 talented craftspeople, most of whom are from Lancaster County, who will be present and plying their quality creations. Some of the large variety of crafts that will be made available include stained glass; snowman decorations; handmade jewelry; decorative eggs; painted gourds; elaborately painted rocks; and leather handbags, purses and satchels.
“They’re not all holiday crafts,” said Miller.
The United Women of Faith will also be offering for sale gently used holiday treasure items.
“We think a lot of the crafters, and we provide for them,” Miller said. “A lot of them come back the next year because they enjoy it so much.”
“We did very well (financially) last year,” added Miller. “We’re trying to make as much as we can to support our church and our mission projects. We’re just thankful for what we get. We try to keep prices low. People don’t want to spend a lot of money. The baskets are reasonably priced.”
The pinnacle of the bazaar will be 70 themed
A light lunch of sandwiches, potato chips, macaroni salad and beverages will be served. There were will also be a large bake sale, with cakes, pies, doughnuts, fudge, candy and other assorted goodies available for purchase.
Several hundred people are expected to attend
Bird-in-Hand United Methodist Church has been hosting a seasonal bazaar for more than 75 years, but only over the last six years has the church brought in outside crafters. Typically, the church also conducts a sub sale as a fundraiser in the spring.
“Our ladies in the church provided all the stuff for the bazaar up until six years ago,” said Miller. “The event has definitely evolved. The core group of women does as much as they can do. We realize with such a small group of
“The ladies’ group has been the foundation for keeping the church going,” said Miller. “It’s basically the backbone of the church. We try to do whatever we’re capable of. We have some really hard workers. Those 10 women have been going to Bird-in-Hand United Methodist Church all of their lives.”

Those Who Serve
Submitted by Leona Baker, The Historical Society of Salisbury Township
In the United States, Veterans Day, which is observed in November, has been set aside to remember those who have bravely served in our armed forces to defend the privileges guaranteed by our Constitution. But those serving in war zones are on the brink every day. From those who took up arms against unfair tariffs in 1776 to brave citizens protesting slavery in the 1860s, Americans have answered the call to arms. In the 20th century, we sent many to defended our foreign friends as they defend democracy throughout the world.
No matter the war, no matter the distance from home, those who wait for news about their kin must live with the uncertainty of what any day will bring. These days, thanks to digital expertise, communications are much more timely than in the Revolutionary times, Civil War times or any other wartime. Families can keep in touch one-on-one across
thousands of miles. Whether you have a family member in the service or not, every mother, sister, brother or dad will connect with this tale of “A Good Day” provided from a friend of the Historical Society of Salisbury Township, Karel Henneberger.
“Hi, Dad.” Brad peers at the screen in front of him, his eyes squinting in the bright desert light. “Yesterday was a good day.”
We both smile. In his world, a good day is one where nobody got hurt or killed.
“We helped some kids rebuild a school. It was only a single room about the size of my bedroom at home. It was amazing. Those kids were so excited to have a school to go back to.” A big grin then. Brad never was one to be excited about going to school.
I nod. “Sounds like you’re doing some good over there,” I say, trying not to think of the bad days he’s had and those he’ll likely have in the future.
“Yeah. We are. I just wish we weren’t needed here at all.” He looks away to one
side. “Gotta go, Dad. We’re moving out.”
Our hands touch together on our screens, then Brad reaches to shut down his computer, looking over his shoulder at a couple of soldiers waving at him.
My screen is blank. He had already left me before his fingers clicked on the close button. His mind was back with his buddies heading into some dangerous mission intended to keep the villages nearby safe from the enemy.
I shut my eyes, draw in a big breath and hold it as if that will keep my son and his friends safe. My breath staggers out again as I throw up a prayer to any god that happens to be listening. “Give him another good day,” I whisper.
Yesterday was a good day. But I know the odds are against such a good day

He said he is proud of the church’s involvement in the community, such as supporting Cornerstone Reproductive Health and The Factory Ministries. “We try to join other local ministries to facilitate what they are doing,” he said. “We also have a Great Giveaway every August.” For the Great Giveaway, the congregation donates thousands of items, including clothing, books, household items and toys. The community is invited to take these items home, free of charge.
After retirement, Davis says he plans to spend more time with his family and possibly work part time helping other churches. “I am a certified church

consultant,” he stated. “I do plan to try to help out some other churches on a part-time basis that may need extra help. It may be bringing me in for a month to look at their finances and their ministries.”
“With all my experience, I would love to go into other churches and help them in any way I can and make suggestions,” he added. “Sometimes when you have fresh eyes look at a church, you see things.”

Davis said he will miss working with all of the church’s staff members, but he plans to stay in touch. “My wife, Karen, and I have been invited to continue to attend here,” he stated, noting they live in Georgetown in Bart Township, about 3 miles from the church.
CMBC is located at 1660 Mine Road, Paradise. The Sunday worship service is held at 9 a.m., and Sunday school classes for people of all ages are offered at 10:30 a.m. Coffee and refreshments are available. Volunteers Sought for Gift-Wrapping Fundraiser

UDSF’s gift-wrapping booth can be found at Park City Center, located off Plaza Boulevard in Lancaster, from Friday, Nov. 28, through Wednesday, Dec. 24. The gift-wrapping booth is one of UDSF’s largest yearly fundraisers.
In order to staff this year’s booth through its entire run, UDSF is seeking 400 volunteers. Those 14 years of age and older interested in volunteering may contact Radha Davé at 717-715-8921 or radhad@ udservices.org. Information can also be found at https://udservices.org/ gift-wrap-booth/.

UDSF also welcomes new and returning sponsors - both local businesses and individual donorsto help cover the costs of gift-wrapping supplies. To learn more, contact Angie Trout at 717-2860267 or AngelaT@uds foundation.org.
