Is a Second Chance
BY ADRIAN ESCHENWALD
On a sunny afternoon in April 2010, Betsy Shank was mowing the grass in front of her home in Millersville. After seeing what initially appeared to be a dead baby squirrel, Shank cut the engine and rushed to take a closer look. The little kit was still alive, so Shank raced to her computer and searched for advice on how to best help the animal. Sixteen years later, Shank has dedicated her life to rescuing local wildlife as the founder and executive director of Acorn Acres Wildlife Rehabilitation. Located at 2100 Stone Mill Road in Lancaster, Acorn Acres Wildlife Rehabilitation is a nonprofit organization that rehabilitates native prey species and Virginia opossums, in addition to educating the community on the animals it serves. At the facility, Shank and a team of volunteers provide medical stabilization, nutrition and housing for injured animals such as squirrels, rabbits and groundhogs to help them recover and return to the wild with minimal human imprinting. After severe storms and a tornado tore through Lancaster County in August, local residents began sifting through debris to find the extent of the damage and clean up their yards. Many people discovered they weren’t the only ones affected by the destructive weather; hundreds of animals were left injured or displaced in the storm’s wake, including mothers that left behind nests of their young. Within a few days, the lobby of Acorn Acres Wildlife Rehabilitation was packed with See Acorn Acres pg 3 Up to 50% OFF Floor Models!

through the process. Caregivers can also benefit from learning about programs designed to help them navigate the challenges of caring for a veteran. By bringing representatives from multiple agencies together, the Legion hopes to make it easier for veterans to identify their needs and find the appropriate next steps. Federal, state and local agencies will attend the program. Participants will include a Veterans Affairs (VA) Service Officer, who will help with VA claims processing; VA Benefits Administration, which will provide information on how to register with the VA; the Building Bridges Foundation, which will highlight its equine therapy program; S heetz Funeral Home, which will help attendees understand veteran burial benefits; and Team Jennifer Cahill Charities, which
is focused on supporting female veterans. The event will be informal and held in the church fellowship hall, enabling attendees to network with other veterans, ask questions and gain resources they seek. “ T h e re w i l l b e l i g h t refreshments available for everyone to enjoy as they build their community of support,” Miller said. Miller hopes attendees will take the first step toward getting the support needed and learning about the resources available to them in the community, noting that sometimes all it takes is one conversation with the right person to open the doors to help. No registration is required to attend the drop-in event. For more information or any questions, contact Miller at ALPOST185SO@gmail.com or 717-808-6444.

everything from construction projects to emergency rescues since she founded Acorn Acres Wildlife Rehabilitation in 2021. Acorn Acres Wildlife Rehabilitation moved to its current location in November 2024, an expansion that greatly increased the organization’s capacity for rescued animals and the specialized equipment necessary to care for them. Although a major fundraising campaign made the expansion possible, Shank continues to rely on community support to cover the rehabilitation center’s expenses, as well as help from volunteer staff members. In September, Acorn Acres Rehabilitation Center launched Second Chance Circle, a community of monthly donors who can contribute any amount to support the organization.

Although the rehabilitation facility had just closed its intake office, Shank contacted Red Creek Wildlife Center in Schuylkill Haven as soon as she heard a major storm was about to hit the county. “I said ‘Hey, I’m closed, but trees and houses are going to come down. People aren’t going to drive over an hour to bring these animals to you,’” Shank said. “They said if I took the animals in and got them stabilized, I could transfer them to Red Creek. So we just opened the doors.” Within two days, Acorn Acres Wildlife Rehabilitation took in more than 100 animals affected by the storm. Assisted by a team of volunteers, Shank and her husband, David Aichele, stabilized as many of the animals as they could before transferring them to Red Creek Wildlife Center. Any of the rescues still in need of medical attention remained at Acorn Acres Wildlife Rehabilitation to recover. “People were in the middle of cleaning up what happened to their homes, but they were compassionate enough to prioritize helping these baby animals. It was just amazing,” said Aichele, Shank’s righthand man and steadfast supporter who’s helped with

we move further into this new century, it is a great time to honor those men and women who disrupted their lives to defend and preserve this nation, some never to return home - our parents, grandparents and great-grandparents. When did they come to the area; how did they grow up, live, start their married life and raise their children? Is your grandmother’s old canning pot gathering dust in the basement? Are you willing to share not only the story of that pot but also the pot itself for an exhibit of family experiences from the 20th century? Was your granddad one of the few people to graduate from the old Salisbury High School in White Horse? Did he or your grandmother stand watch all night as a plane spotter during WWII? Did you shop at Kreider’s Store in White Horse? Did anyone in your family ride the trolley from Lancaster to Gap? Do you remember when sewer
lines were installed in Gap? Did you ever eat at the Gap Diner? As the 250th anniversary of the founding of the United States comes to an end, your historical society wants to make sure to include items and stories about how your family celebrated this year’s distinctive anniversary. But we also invite you to dig into your family history and perhaps bring out and share photos and stories of those members who served in any of the wars in which the U.S. has been involved, maybe even the Revolutionary War itself. While we do have a few uniforms and materials in our collection, we would be delighted to carefully display those photos, uniforms, and materials you may be willing to lend or donate to the society for an exhibit in 2027. The society’s doors are open the first and third Wednesday of each month, or by appointment.

It visited every elementary school in the Eastern Lancaster County School District, as well as Garden Spot High School. It was used by the New Holland Band during the bicentennial performance of John Philip Sousa’s famous march, ‘Liberty Bell.’” “ T hen it returned to the New Holland Farmers National Bank, where it was on display,” continued Ressler. “Sadly, it remained silent but stayed in the bank even as the bank changed ownership and names several times. That silence ended this past July when the New Holland Band again featured it in Sousa’s great march.” The New Holland replica of the Liberty Bell is one of just hundreds of items housed and on display at NHAHS’ museum. “I don’t have a count (on the exact number of items), but I can tell you we are just about busting at the seams,” said Ressler, a resident of New Holland. “We are taking great care to only accept items and archival information - photographs, articles, books that directly relate to New Holland and the surrounding area. It may not be as big as the original Liberty Bell, but the message is just as powerful. In New Holland, they’ve always let freedom ring. “I think all of the board members, our museum docents and volunteers believe that histor y is instructive, it helps unite us and it gives us an appreciation for those who have gone before us to make our community a vibrant and enjoyable place to live,” said Mike Ressler, who’s been the chairman of the New Holland Area Historical Society (NHAHS) for 10 years. “ We learn from our own and others’ mistakes, as well as from the success and triumphs. Understanding our history enables us to know where we have come from, and knowing that will help predict where we are headed.” Located at 207 E. Main S t ., Ne w Holl and, the NHAHS museum’s newest exhibit features a smaller but exact replica of the famous Liberty Bell, one that’s just about as historically significant to the EL ANCO area. The Liberty Bell replica was donated to NHAHS by M&T Bank on March 16 of this year, after it had been
commissioned to be built by New Holland Farmers National Bank in 1973 to commemorate America’s bicentennial. The replica of the Liberty Bell can be viewed during the NHAHS muse um’s regular hours of operation, Thursdays and Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The bell can also be viewed by special appointment, which can be set up by calling 717-354-2049. “We have a great heritage here,” said Ressler. “We are encouraging people adults, kids, families - to visit the museum and ring the bell. It doesn’t have the big, booming, resonate sound that the original must have had to be heard all over Philadelphia, but it has a loud and piercing sound that gets people’s attention. It sounds like a high-quality ship’s bell.” T he or ig inal Liber ty Bell measures about three feet and three inches from the top of its crown to the bottom lip, while New Holland’s replica is about half that length. Both bells are made of bronze, while the original Liberty Bell weighs about 2,080 pounds and the replica checks in at about one-fourth of that total. “ Ne a r l y e ve r y de t a i l of the original bell was included in the replica,

Factory from pg 1 is happening,” said Ellie Green, communications director for the Factory. “The theme for this year is to come and feel, and our guests are encouraged to come and feel what it’s like to walk through the doors of the Factory as someone who’s battling the impacts of poverty and finds empowerment and hope.” Green explained that the tour is not intended to be a poverty simulation but rather is an opportunity for attendees to experience elements of what those who
benefit from the Factory feel when they are empowered through the ministry’s programming. “People will be able to walk through the building, and there’s going to be storyboards (on which) people will be able to see our participants sharing specific elements of their story,” Green explained. The silent auction will be held in the facility’s gymnasium from 5:30 to 7:15 p.m. and will feature items such as themed baskets, trinkets and tickets or gift
cards to local experiences and restaurants. Following the conclusion of the silent auction, Nagle and Fisher will deliver their remarks, which will be centered around what the Factory does for its participants. Tickets to the event are free and can be obtained on the Factory’s website, www.thefactory ministries.com. Tickets are not required but are strongly encouraged for planning purposes. During the silent auction, hors d’oeuvres and

VFW from pg 1 that the VFW is just a bar for veterans, and we’re not that. We’re so much more.” There are three different tiers of VFW memberships. Those who ser ved in a combat theater are regular members who can go to any VFW post worldwide. Auxiliar y members are family members of regular members, while anybody in the community can become a social member with a cursory background check and an application signed by a regular member of that post. Social members have virtually all of the same benefits as regular and auxiliary members, although they are limited to their local post. Post 4 4 8 0 h a s a ro u n d 7 0 0 to 800 members on the books, although only roughly half are active on a yearly basis. Post 7418 is slightly smaller with around 600 members and 105 re g ul ar memb ers , about half of which are active. Parkesburg expressed that its overall numbers are lower, while Gap emphasiz ed that its number of regular members has dropped as the health of Korea and Vietnam veterans falters. “We’re struggling here as far as getting younger members involved with the VFW, and struggling w ith b oard memb ers ,”

Rock musician Michael Kelly Smith held a record show and meet and greet at the post in May.

said L ar r y Bills, quartermaster of Post 7418. “Most (board members) are elderly and not well, so that’s our biggest goal right now, trying to get s o m e re g u l a r yo u n g e r members in here.” “Dramatically lower,” said Heinemann, who was the first female regular member at Post 4480. “I think it’s a nationwide shift, and all private clubs are sort of suffering from it.” Post 4480 offers plenty of opportunities for recreation, both for members and general members of the community. The post has a chili and soup cook-off on Sunday, Nov. 8, from 2 to 4 p.m. It is free to enter, and there is a small cost to be a judge. The post also does bag bingos, the next of which will be held on Sunday, Nov. 15; the doors will open for the event at 1 p.m., and bingo games will start promptly at 2 p.m. Tickets can be purchased online by searching for “Parkesburg VFW Post 4480” on Facebook. Post 7418 als o do es b i n g o o n We d n e s d a y nights and bands twice a month on Saturdays. A large source of revenue for the post is renting out its expansive pavilion space on the property ’s
rear; more information about the pavilion can be obtained by searching for the “Gap VFW Post 7418” group on Facebook. The Gap post will also be open on Thanksgiving for the whole community, serving a free holiday meal for everyone with turkeys that have been donated from the local area. Both posts have been creative in trying to get new people into the building. In May, Michael Kelly Smith, the co- founder and lead guitarist of glam metal band Britny Fox, did a meet and greet and record show at Parkesburg. Kelly Smith, who has lived in Parkesburg for more than a decade, has family members who served in the military who are members at Post 4480. “The feedback has been really outstanding,” Kelly Smith said prior to the show. “We’re just trying to raise every dollar that we can.” “It was really neat to just have a different crowd and just do a different thing here,” Heinemann said. “I think we will continue to do that.” T h e V F W ’s b i g g e s t expenses are about what you would expect. Cooks and bartenders need to be paid, and the lights need to be kept on.
Post 4480 is also one of the only posts in the area that still has an Honor Guard, teams of volunteers that assist with veterans’ funerals and ceremonies. It is a major expense for the post, but an important piece of what the post does for the community. “I get calls from as far as Philly to do Honor Guard stuff, which is sor t of crazy that it has fallen off,” Heinemann said. “That’s why we’re here, to support veterans. Whether they’re alive or supporting their families. That’s our mission; the other stuff is fluff to me.” The VFW needs support from the community in its mission to return the favor, all while providing a safe haven for those who fought for our freedom. “It’s just nice to have somebody that has shared interests and backgrounds,” Heinemann said. “That’s our primary mission, to support veterans.” Located at 406 W. Fourth Ave., Parkesburg, Post 4480 can be reached at 610-8571504 or vfwpost4480@ gmail.com. Post 7418 is located at 4988 Lincoln Highway, Gap, and can be reached at 717-442-9976. “Come in and see what we’re about,” Bills said. “Maybe volunteer a bit of your time.”

The Women’s Garden Club of Lancaster County will hold a program on Thursday, Nov. 19, from 1 to 3 p.m. at St. Thomas Episcopal Church, 301 St. Thomas Road, Lancaster. The speaker will be author and orchid expert Arthur E. Chadwick. Art and his father, A. A. Chadwick - who began growing orchids in 1943 - founded C hadwick & Son Orchids Inc. in 1989. The duo’s first book, “The Classic Cattleyas,” was released 20 years ago, with an updated second edition printed in 2022. A second book, “First Ladies and their Orchids: A Century of Namesake Cattleyas,” was released in 2024. In addition, for 20 years, Art wrote a monthly orchid advice column that was carried
by newspapers around the country. Art and his father operate 13 greenhouses in rural Powhatan County, Va., as well as two retail stores in Richmond, and they board more than 13,000 orchids for local clients. The company has been featured on television shows and in magazines and newspapers. In addition, the Chadwicks have named Cattleya hybrids after the wives of the six recent U.S. presidents and personally presented the flowers to most of the honorees. Art regularly presents to orchid societies and has spoken at three World Orchid Conferences. Recently, Chadwick & Son Orchids had two high-profile orchid exhibits: one at the 2025 Chelsea Flower
Arthur E. Chadwick
Show in London, where the company won a silver medal from the Royal Horticultural Society and a visit from Queen Camilla, and one at the 2026 Philadelphia Flower Show, where the company received best artistic design, best educational exhibit, no. 1 must-
