Carolyn Pencheff, director of the Pequea Valley High School (PVHS) fall production of “Meet Me in St. Louis,” noted that the play has presented her and the cast with some interesting challenges. “We have a great cast, and I couldn’t be happier,” said Pencheff, who then noted that one cast member has a broken leg, and another has a badly sprained ankle. Fortunately, both should be healed by showtime. “In early blocking rehearsals, we had a scooter (for the boy with the broken leg) on stage, so that was interesting,” noted Pencheff. PVHS will stage “Meet Me in St. Louis” at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 9, and Saturday, Nov. 10, at the school, 4033 E. Newport Road, Kinzers. “Meet Me in St. Louis” is the story about the members of the Smith family, who are excited about attending the

In late 2016 when TTC/Potter’s House approached leaders at Conestoga Church of the Brethren about the possibility of holding a two-part educational program concerning the heroin epidemic in Lancaster County, church members responded. “It’s needed in the community,” said pastor Jere Cassel. The first effort led to a second collaborative workshop in April of this year. According to Cassel, church members then suggested a fall workshop. Cassel met with TTC/Potter’s House ministry director Lanny Millette to discuss content. “The holiday connection was See Workshop pg 8
St. Louis World’s Fair in 1904. However, Mr. Smith, played by Ian Hershey, reveals that he is being given a higherpaying job in New York and the family members will have to leave their St. Louis home, including all their friends and loved ones, and miss out on the fair. Out of desperation, the four daughters - Rose, played by Sierra Anastasi; Esther, played by Faith Strenck; Agnes, played by Emily Eby; and Tootie, played by Bre Fellenbaum - take action to try to make their father decide to keep the family in St. Louis. What starts as a plan soon becomes a series of mishaps that threaten not only their hopes of staying in St. Louis but also Mr. Smith’s career and Rose’s love life. Upward Basketball League Expands
Hope For The Holidays
The Upward Basketball League held at Pequea Baptist Church is such a popular activity for youngsters that this season it will be expanded to include eighth-graders for the first time. Upward Basketball is a nationwide program provided through sponsoring churches. Now offered for boys and girls in first through eighth grades, the program at Pequea Baptist strives to teach skills and teamwork in a safe, fun environment. Ridgeview Mennonite Church in Gordonville hosted a banquet on Oct. 17 to honor and thank the volunteer first responders of Gordonville and Intercourse fire companies and Gordonville EMS, along with their families. The event began with a meal. After the meal, the first responders demonstrated their skills by presenting a rescue simulation. The first responders rescued two trapped persons in a
flipped van and interacted with someone playing the part of a victim’s father arriving on the scene. The event concluded with a candy drop from the high basket of a ladder truck. Pam Gigac will be one of many vendors who will participate in the fourth annual Christmas art and craft market hosted by Lampeter United Methodist Church on Nov. 3. An artisan of stained glass will offer Nativity scenes and additional figures along with ornaments and other stained glass items. This year’s market will feature several vendors selling jewelry, and no two are alike, Mary said. A fiber artist will sell mittens, scarves, sweaters, and more. Other vendors will offer handmade aprons, tea towels, handmade natural soaps and salves, a line of men’s products, painted slates, and more. A cafÊ sponsored by the United Methodist Women group will be open for breakfast and lunch. Mary noted that the breakfast sandwiches are typically a big hit. Homemade soups and sandwiches will be on the lunch menu. The soups may be purchased in small quantities to eat on-site, or they may be bought in quarts to take home. The proceeds from the cafÊ will benefit some mission activities and meet needs around the church. A silent auction will run throughout the event, offering gift baskets, products donated by many of the vendors, and more. Profits from the silent auction, as well as table rental fees, will support missionaries’ emergency needs and church members’ mission trips. Lady Booters Top Wyomissing, Fall to Elco by Ara Grigorian
The Pequea Valley girls’ soccer team opened its District Three ClassAA playoffs with a 4-1 win at home, defeating Wyomissing on Tuesday night. By beating the 10th-seeded Spartans, the No. 7 ranked Braves advanced to the District quarterfinals with a date at Lancaster-Lebanon League foe Elco on Saturday. The Braves jumped on the scoreboard right away, taking advantage of an own goal by Wyomissing (10-6-3). Brittany Shirk doubled that slim lead in the 32nd minute of the game. Following intermission, Baleigh
Henshaw took matters into her own hands..., or feet, rather. She struck two shots into the Spartans’ net - both goals coming three minutes apart from each other. Meanwhile, Alyssa Yoder and Grace Martin each recorded an assist on the night. The Braves, who improved to 12-43, allowed only seven shots on goal. Kyrstin Jarvis grabbed six saves while anchoring a strong defensive effort. In Saturday’s second-round game, the Raiders demonstrated the offensive fire power that had helped them achieve an unbeaten record through the regular season and the L-L League playoffs. The team that had registered
shutouts in nine of its final 10 regular season games blanked the Braves 7-0 as Natalie Swingholm put up a hat trick and Tanisha Grewal added two more goals. The Braves’ record fell to 12-5-3. BOYS’ SOCCER Pequea Valley played its first match in two weeks as it visited Fleetwood in the first round of the District Three Class-AA boys’ soccer playoffs. Entering the playoffs as the sixthranked team at 14-3-2, the Braves visited the Tigers on Saturday night under brisk, rainy conditions. Despite trailing at halftime and again falling behind by a 3-1 score in the second half, the Braves battled back only to have a late Fleetwood goal end their season at 14-4-2. “It was frustrating,” said PV head coach Peter Bennett. “It was 3-3 and both sides were pushing to get the game-winner in the final 10 minutes. Unfortunately, they got behind us and were able to finish with about two or three minutes left. “They’re a good team with some good offensive players,” he added.
The Tigers scored the only goal of the first half and padded the lead early in the second half. “In the beginning of the game, they came out ready to go,” Bennett remarked. “They had a couple of chances early on. They had an early goal eight minutes in. We worked our way back into the game and it was a tight match. It was 1-0 at halftime.” Elijah Elkins scored the Braves’ first goal of the game, cutting the deficit to 2-1. The Tigers reclaimed the twogoal lead only to see the Braves erase the huge advantage by scoring the next two goals. “It is something that I’ve been proud of this team all season - our ability to weather adversity,” Bennett said. “It would’ve been easy when it was 2-0 or 3-1 to pack it in. Our guys did well to rally and keep doing what has been successful for us. I thought we played better in the second half.” With a foul on Elkins in the penalty box, Joshua Heinrich stepped up and scorched the penalty kick into the Tigers’ goal to make it 3-2. Brandon Ratjavong scored the equalizer
minutes later. With players like Elkins and Ratjavong, who are juniors, as well as sophomore goalie Nehemiah Glick, the head coach anticipates continued success in the future. “We have a lot of players coming back,” he said. “We have a big class of juniors coming through. For them to show that fight certainly bodes well for the future.” FOOTBALL The beleaguered Pequea Valley offense was unable to score against Lancaster Catholic on Friday night. The Braves suffered a 37-0 LancasterLebanon League loss to the top team in Section Three. It was a Goliath of an opponent for the Braves, who were hosting a team that had outscored opponents 327-82 in its previous nine games. The Crusaders (100) had averaged 36.3 points per game and just about matched that on Friday night in Kinzers.
The Braves, who fell to 0-9 in league play (0-10 overall) kept it close for the first half. At intermission, it was 16-0 Lancaster Catholic with the first two points of the game coming on a safety. “We played a really good team with some great, well-coached athletes,” said head coach Mike Choi. “I’m very proud of the way our guys played.” Choi emphasized the strong defensive effort that kept the Crusaders’ offense to only two touchdowns, especially with injuries to four defensive starters. “We had two linebackers out, a defensive end and a cornerback,” he said. “We had guys learning new positions this past week in practice. It was a challenge to get them ready to play a fundamentally sound game.

More than seven years ago, Titus Kauffman, Fred Groff, and Chet Yoder organized the first Service of Remembrance at Garden Spot Village (GSV). Kauffman said that the service was based on one that was held at an Ephrata church. After the trio attended the Ephrata service, they designed the local service to offer area residents who have lost a loved one a time and place to grieve and remember. The 2018 Service of Remembrance will be held in the chapel at GSV, 433 S. Kinzer Ave., New Holland, on Sunday, Nov. 4, at 2:30 p.m. The theme of this year’s service is “Triumph Over the Tragedies of Life,� and the speaker will be Bryan Koch, pastor of Glad Tidings Church in West Lawn and a former professional baseball player. He will share his experience of becoming a widower and amputee after experiencing a motorcycle accident. Koch will tell attendees how he lost his wife of nearly 30 years and his left leg in a motorcycle accident on June 7, 2015. Koch’s story begins when he was in high school when his talent for baseball led to

his being drafted by the Chicago White Sox Major League Baseball organization. Around that same time, he became a Christian and began the discipleship process. While serving as a catcher and first baseman in the White Sox organization, Koch was hit in the face with a ball that blinded him in his left eye and ended his baseball career. Koch responded by going into full-time ministry. He joined the staff of Glad Tidings, becoming lead pastor in 1992. He married, and he and his wife had three boys. Tragedy struck with the devastating motorcycle accident. “We were a mile from our house in Leesport,� said Koch, who was in a medically induced coma when his wife was buried. The staff at Glad Tidings stepped forward to help make decisions and support his three boys, now 27, 25, and 19, when the accident occurred. Koch now wears a prosthetic leg and serves as assistant superintendent of PennDel Network for Assemblies of God Churches. In addition to the speaker, the Petra Church worship team will lead worship at the event. Music may include instrumental solos and other special selections. Light refreshments will follow the service. Kauffman noted that some speakers at past events have drawn large crowds. Groff estimated that as many as 175 people usually attend. The service has traditionally been prior to the holidays because organizers are sensitive to the fact that those who have experienced loss often find the holiday season difficult. Challenges inherent in the production include making it appear that cast members are hit by water balloons and finding a digestible substance that would stand in for chicken hearts, which the girls are supposed to swallow whole as part of a running joke in the show. “We decided on (gelatin) that will go down easy when they swallow it whole (because) we can make it realistic,” said Pencheff, who explained that the girls swallow the chicken hearts based on a superstition that they would marry the next person they shook hands with. “Of course, there are complications involving who they will shake hands with next … and they may not want to shake hands, and how will they get out of it?” explained Pencheff, who added that the girls also get into trouble by putting a stuffed dummy on the trolley tracks. Anastasi said that audience members should expect lots of laughs from the production. Strenck thoughtfully noted that audiences who attend will be reminded that no family is ever perfect. The workshop, “Holidays and Realities of Community Addictions,” will be held on Wednesday, Nov. 7, beginning at 6:30 p.m. at Conestoga Church of the Brethren, 141 E. Main St., Leola. The program will include a keynote address by Samuel Mwangi, pastor of Carpenter Community Church in Brownstown, followed by a panel discussion and a period of questions from the audience. Mwangi said that he envisions a seminar that will address the situations that those dealing with addiction, those in recovery, and families of both face at the holidays. “The holidays are one of the most vulnerable times for people in recovery,” explained Mwangi, who noted that the celebratory spirit can actually make life more challenging. “It can be a very difficult time.” Among the many issues that face individuals and families dealing with addiction are a number of losses. Some may be missing friends or loved ones who have been lost to overdose. Others are grieving the loss of a marriage or relationships with children. The materialism commonly associated with the holidays can deepen problems when the resources to participate are not available. “This workshop will help to create awareness so those in recovery can be on guard,” explained

A fourth panelist will be representative of a family member who has walked with a loved one in recovery. In addition to the speaker and panelists, organizers plan to have displays in the church fellowship area, including one representing GOAL (Global Outreach for Addiction Leadership and Learning) Project, featuring Compass Mark literature. TTC/Potter’s House is a nonprofit, Christ-centered ministry that offers a holistic approach to physical, emotional, and spiritual needs of pre-release and post-release prisoners and individuals desiring to overcome addictions. Once formed, teams hold practice sessions on either Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday evenings, with each team practicing on the same day and time each week beginning on Saturday, Jan. 12, 2019. Teams also have a set time for the weekly Saturday morning games at the church gymnasium. The final game of the season will be held Saturday, March 9, 2019.
