145 Years And Counting

Church Plans Anniversary Events
BY ANN MEAD ASHJesseBills, who has been the pastor of Pequea Evangelical Congregational (E.C.) Church for more than a year now, said the church has a busy fall planned. “We’ve got a lot going on,” he noted.

The extra activity involves the church’s 145th anniversary. Bills said planning started in earnest in August. “We saw it as an opportunity to celebrate the past and get excited about the future too,” he said.
Observance of the anniversary will kick off with a community worship service on Sunday, Nov. 6, at 10 a.m. at the church, 5482 Old Philadelphia Pike, Gap. E.C. denominational leader Randy Sizemore will travel from the church’s home offices in Myerstown to preach that day. His sermon, titled “Returning to Jerusalem,” will focus on Acts 1:1-12. In addition to

Pequea E.C. Church members, worshipers from nearby Mount Airy E.C. Church and Pequea Presbyterian Church will visit for a corporate worship service followed by a fellowship meal.
On Sunday, Nov. 13, at 3 p.m., a birthday bash will be held. Mike Sigman, pastor of Grace Community Church in Willow Street, where Bills serves as pastor of discipleship, will bring a short and encouraging message on the subject of partnership, and juggler Chris Ivey will entertain.
On Sunday, Nov. 20, at 3 p.m., an old-fashioned hymn sing will be held. The special guest speaker will be Jeff Byerly, who grew up in nearby Cambridge. Bills explained that Byerly just retired from serving for more than 20 years at Bethesda E.C. Church in Schuylkill Haven. “He is a son of this congregation,” said Bills, pointing out that Byerly came to faith at Pequea and was called to ministry from the church.

Cohen To Speak At Church

Israel Cohen, a representative of Chosen People Ministries, will speak at Cornerstone Bible Church, 529 Lauschtown Road, Bowmansville, on Sunday, Oct. 30, during the evening praise service at 6 p.m. The program will be “Messiah in the Tabernacle.”
Chosen People Ministries was founded in Brooklyn, N.Y., in 1894 by Leopold Cohn, a Hungarian rabbi who came to believe that Jesus was the Messiah of Israel. It has grown into a worldwide ministry with outreach centers in Argentina, Australia, Canada, England, France, Germany, Israel, Mexico, Ukraine, and the United States. Its mission is to bring the Gospel message of salvation in Jesus to Jewish people and to others around the world, emphasizing the Jewish roots of the Christian faith. Its goal is to make the message of the Messiah more accessible to Jewish people and to help Christians achieve a greater appreciation of the Jewish basis of their own faith traditions.

The meeting is open to the public, and the church invites both the Christian and Jewish communities to attend.

The third 2022 BIHUMC Crafter’s Bazaar will be held at the church, 2620 Old Philadelphia Pike, Bird-inHand, on Saturday, Nov. 12, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. In addition to crafts, the event will

include gently used holiday decorations, more than 30 themed gift baskets, food, and a baked goods table. Prior to the first Crafter’s Bazaar, which was held in 2019, the church had held a holiday bazaar for more than 50 years.

According to Jo, more than

17 crafters will take part in this year’s event. Among the many craft items that will be available for purchase are woodcrafts, quilted items, framed jewelry art, candles, Christmas ornaments, rustic holiday wall hangings, handmade jewelry, herbal wreaths, lavender sachets, painted rocks, note cards, and collectible bears in several sizes. Items for dogs that will be available for purchase include blankets and coats. Knitted and crocheted hats, scarves, and critters will also be available. A few of the themed baskets will go up for bids in a silent auction.
In addition, Pillows With a Mission will sell pillows, with all proceeds benefiting school supply kits that go to Mennonite Central Committee. Last year, the group created 361 handmade bags filled with school supplies. This year, 410 bags have been made and filled. The group also purchases fabric to cut
and sew the LuoPads for UNTO, formerly Global Aid Network.

Among the local organizations and efforts that are supported by the group are Clare House, programs from the Eastern Pennsylvania Conference of the United Methodist Church, Conestoga Valley Christian Community Services, Weekend Blessings, and Water Street Mission. The group has also collected socks, gloves, and mittens for the Salvation Army; donated to Apple Tree for Teachers and Hudson’s Heart for the Homeless; and donated personal care items for the Gino J. Merli Veterans’ Center in Scranton.
Organizers plan to sell lunch items, including barbecue sandwiches, hot dogs, chips, and beverages.
Readers who have questions about the fundraiser may call 717-397-3047 and leave a message for a return call.

Pequea Church frompg 1

Bills noted that the Mount Airy congregation represents more than just a neighboring church. “Mount Airy is our mother church,” he explained, noting that, prior to the founding of Pequea E.C. in the fall of 1877, a small group from Mount Airy began holding a Sunday school in an old schoolhouse in the area. “Eventually they started this church,” said Bills.
Bills wants residents from the surrounding area to know that those who have been part of the church history are welcome to take part in the celebrations. “We are inviting retired pastors and anyone that has connections from the past to come out and join us,” he said.
Regular Pequea E.C. Sunday services are held at 9 a.m. in person or by livestream at
www.pcchurch.online or by searching for “Pequea Church of White Horse” on Facebook.

Young Women Of New Holland Shine At The Fair

Two young women, both students at Garden Spot High School (GSHS), have distinguished themselves at the New Holland Fair. GSHS senior Kendell Moats of New Holland was crowned the first New Holland fair queen on Sept. 28, and GSHS sophomore Nicole Martin of East Earl was chosen to show the Robert D. Herr Scholarship goat, which coincidentally was named grand champion.
Moats’ decision to enter the fair queen competition had roots in her landing in an Agriculture I class during her freshman year. “I do not raise any animals, and I do not come from an

agricultural background,” declared Moats. “(But) I fell in love with (agriculture), and I learned that there were a lot of public speaking opportunities for me.” Moats noted that she hopes to major in communications in college. “I decided that FFA was going to be the right fit for me,” she said.
Moats’ other reason for entering was her affection for the New Holland Fair. “I have grown up going to the New Holland Fair, and I’ve loved all the traditions it has brought for me and my family and me and my friends,” she said. “So I just wanted to give back to the community.”

Moats now serves as president of Grassland FFA. “I have loved becom-

ing an advocate for agriculture,” said Moats, who has also received honor roll recognition at GSHS. She is a member of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes, serves as the student representative to the ELANCO School Board, and is an intern in the marketing department of Engle Printing & Publishing Co., Inc. Moats will represent New Holland in the Pennsylvania state fair queen competition in 2023.
Martin was chosen by GSHS FFA teachers to show the Robert D. Herr Scholarship goat at the fair. To qualify, Martin completed an application that required information on how she would choose a high-quality goat and care for that goat, including feeding
and exercise. Martin, who has been raising goats since she was in second grade, was prepared to complete the application.
The Herr Scholarship provides funds for both the student chosen to show the goat and a scholarship given to one or more students in the spring of each year. The scholarship was first given in 1998, upon the retirement of Herr, who had served as agriculture teacher at GSHS since 1959. Herr offered to provide the animal, originally a lamb, to be shown at the fair. Herr noted that this year his herd did not kid at the proper time, and the animal was obtained from his granddaughter’s

herd in Ohio. Following the animal competitions, a livestock sale is held, and funds raised by the sale of the goat are split. Herr noted that in 2021, three local businesses joined together to purchase the goat. Herr said that he is thankful for the support of local organizations in the endeavor. Martin plans to use the funds for college, noting that she is considering becoming a veterinary technician for large animals.
The other portion of the Herr Scholarship goes to one or more GSHS seniors just prior to graduation. The student must have shown livestock during high school as a member of Grassland FFA and have been accepted to a college or university to major in agricultural education or an area of animal science. The student must provide a summary of FFA involvement and plans to meet his or her future career goals.

The New Holland Farmers Fair recently celebrated its 90th anniversary. More information about the organization may be found at http://newhollandfair.org. To view photos from the fair, visit www.town lively.com/in-the-community.

Ressler, Vincent Earn Top 25 League Medals
FOOTBALL
In the Section Five gridiron battle between the Braves and visiting Annville-Cleona on Friday, October 14, the Dutchmen deluged the Pequea Valley defense with 30 points in the second quarter of their 5912 victory.

Heading into the second stanza, it was an 8-6 game with A-C ahead by merely a two-point conversion.
as many reps as possible in three days of practice.
“We had some second- and third-string players who worked hard all week,” continued the coach. “But it’s difficult situations in games without all the reps.”
Pequea Valley opened the scoring on the first drive of the game. Dontae Petersheim’s four-yard rushing touchdown capped the drive.
“It was nice to see our offense move the ball on that first drive,” Choi said. “It was a nice mix of pass and run. It was certainly a good way to start the game.”
BY ARA GRIGORIANPequea Valley runner Aubrey Ressler came down the home stretch of the cross country course at Ephrata Middle School on Tuesday, October 18, with an excellent pace. She crossed the finish line in a time of 20:03 and claimed seventh place in the girls’ Lancaster-Lebanon League Championship race. She also became the top finisher on the day for runners from the Class AA schools.

Ressler’s seventh-place finish and teammate Caleigh Vincent’s 20:33.2 pace, which earned 20th place, paced Pequea girls to an 11th-place finish in the
team standings. The topo 25 individuals earned medals. The Braves finished with 307 points. Manheim Township finished atop the team standings with 74 points.
Abby Beiler also had an impressive finish, earning 50th place overall at 21:50. Izzy Hershey (24:59.60) and Ashlee Hershey (31:07.40) rounded out the Braves’ top-five.
In the boys’ championship race, Cameron Beiler paced Pequea with a time of 18:57, earning 96th place.
The Braves’ top-five finishers included Hugh Johnson (19:24), Nate Sensenig (21:12.7) Ryan Flaim (21:47.5) and Nathan Gehman (25:00.7).
“The game got away from us in the second quarter,” Pequea coach Mike Choi stated. “We struggled on special teams and ended up giving short fields to a good team like Annville. We paid the price.”

The Dutchmen improved to 3-2 in the L-L League (5-3 overall) spoiling the Braves’ Senior Night at Kinzers. The Braves fell to 1-7 (1-4 league).
Annville’s Phoenix Music rose to the occasion with four touchdowns on a night that he gained 200 yards on 28 carries.

One of the obstacles facing the Braves was injuries.
“We dressed 19 kids, so we were short-handed with some injuries,” Choi explained. “You get out there on Monday and you find out how many injured players you have. You try to find time with the new kids to have
Quarterback Peyton Temple, who completed five passes for 73 yards and no interceptions on the night, helped engineer the drive. Two of Temple’s passes went to Orlando Stoltzfus for a total of 50 yards.
The first period ended on Music’s first score of the game - also a four-yard carry. Cael Harter’s run for the two-point PAT made it 8-6.
The 30-point period featured two more TD’s by Music and a 24-yard scoring pass from Gavin Keller to Jonathon Shay.
The Pequea touchdowns were the bookends in this game.
Petersheim, who ran for 57 yards on eight carries, scored on the opening drive. Darrell Beiler broke through for a 70-yard dash to the endzone in the fourth quarter to end the scoring for the night. He tallied 87 yards on the night.
“That was an awesome run by Darrell Beiler,” said Choi.
“He made some athletic moves, some cutbacks. He then turned on the speed.
“You always look for guys who compete to the last whistle,” Choi added. “For us to be able to score that last touchdown, that shows what our kids do - they fight to the end.”
GOLF
At the PIAA Class 2A state championships on Penn State University’s Blue Course, senior Matt Lapp ended the first day of competition tied for 41st with a10-over-par 82.
On the second day of competition held Tuesday, October 18, Lapp shot an 81 (two-day total of 163) and finished the tournament in a three-way tie for 39th place.
“Matt finished with a strong back nine on that second day,” Pequea coach Clair Beiler commented. “The weather was cold
Region for Penn State Health. The medical center is located near the intersection of State Road and Harrisburg Pike in East Hempfield Township.

The new hospital is an acute care facility, and it will offer both inpatient and outpatient care from its sixstory, 341,000-square-foot location that features 132 private patient beds. “Lancaster Medical Center will have inpatient services, including a cardiac catheterization lab, cardiac surgery, general surgery, labor and delivery, and complete medical and surgical capabilities,” Frank noted. “It will offer outpatient services such as an Emergency Department,
imaging services and physician offices.”

Unique features at the facility include a “hybrid operating room,” Frank said, explaining that this state-ofthe-art design is an advanced procedural space that includes a traditional operating room (OR) and medical imaging devices. “Having advanced imaging and surgical technologies available in the same space makes it easier on the patient,” he remarked. “Our teams will be able to give them a single visit to the hybrid OR as opposed to multiple procedures. It allows us to do more advanced interventions in the operating room.”
While Frank emphasized that the most important feature of Lancaster Medical Center is its team of caregivers, he detailed design features that reflect the organization’s commitment to a healthy work environment. Departments and units are designed to promote staff collaboration and efficient workflow that reduces steps and provides quick access to supplies when minutes matter, he said. “A state-of-theart café with indoor and outdoor seating provides healthy dining in a soothing atmosphere,” Frank shared. “Meditation areas, abundant windows with panoramic views, art and décor designs and the walking trail further promote well-being for staff and visitors.”

Construction on the hospital began in 2020. “Being able to design a hospital from scratch gives you many opportunities to incorporate design and technology into an exceptional patient experience,” Frank said. “We’ve planned so we are able to provide state-of-the-art technology for the community needs now and in the future as our community grows. We’ve engaged our physician partners in the technology choices just as our nurses are engaged in designing our care. And we’ve added expanded con-
sumer technologies like inroom digital patient education to not only provide the highest level of quality care, but also easy accessibility, comfort and convenience.”
Projected population growth was an important factor in

choosing the site of the new medical center, he said. “We know that Lancaster County is growing, and along with population growth will come the need for more health care services,” he commented. “This location provides a comfortable and convenient access to Penn State Health care, especially for an aging population. It allows us to

on both days. Matt finished his solid high school career with a round that embodied his senior year. His strong finish included a birdie on his last hole.”
The championship went to Nick Ciocca, of Devon Prep, who had a combined 6-under-par two-day total of 138, including a 68 on his second day. Jacob Wolak of Slippery Rock finished second at 139.
GIRLS’ SOCCER
The hat trick by Manheim Township’s Eloise Warfel included two scores in a five-goal first half as the Blue Streaks blanked the Braves 7-0 on Saturday afternoon, October 15 in Neffsville. In the opening round of the L-L League Girls’ Soccer playoffs, the Section One champion Streaks knocked out the Section Four runner-up Braves.
In the District Three Class 2A power rankings, the 10-7-1, 12th-seeded Braves missed the cut for top 10 teams qualifying for district playoffs.

In the Township game, the Streaks compiled 19 shots on goal with Pequea goalkeeper Carissa Mulder making 12 saves.

Church To Refurbish Windows
Salem Evangelical Reformed Church, Hellers, 2555 Horseshoe Road, Leola, has entered the third phase of its stained glass window refurbishment project carried out by Lancaster Stained Glass Designs. This phase entails reconstructing and preserving a 15-by-22-foot window complex consisting of 11 large panels featuring Gothic arches and an 8-foot-wide circular rose window.

The church building has more than 46 individual stained-glass windows symbolizing themes from the Bible and the local area. The window at the front of the chancel depicts a Bible to emphasize God’s Word as the authority for the congregants’ faith. Other windows depict a dove, the Lamb of God, Christ calling His disciples to be fishers of men, a flaming heart showing God’s love for humanity, wheat and grapes symbolizing Communion, the cross and crown showing believers’ heavenly reward, a star representing the one that led the Wise Men to Christ, an olive branch signifying peace, and a shock of wheat representing prosperity. In several places are three circles to remind viewers of the Holy Trinity. One window depicts a Conestoga wagon, which carried pioneers to new lands to spread the Gospel.

Founded in 1725, Salem Hellers is one of the oldest continuing Reformed Church
congregations on the East Coast.
The property originally belonged to the German Reformed Church of the United States, and services were conducted in German until 1838 when English became the favored language.
The current masonry building, constructed in 1860, was fashioned in Romanesque Revival form with rectangular windows, red brick, and dark red adornments. In 1896, the rectangular windows were replaced with Gothic arches and stained glass, amounting to 35 stained-glass windows. The original bell still calls worshippers every Sunday morning. The main cemetery contains approximately 2,800 graves, with the earliest dating
back to 1737.
The name Salem refers to peace, whereas Hellers refers to the vicinity of the original Heller farm. The church, frequently called Salem Hellers, will celebrate its 300th anniversary in 2025.

Salem Hellers exists to glorify
God, to grow in the Spirit, and to go into the world with the Gospel. A worship service is held at 9:25 a.m. each Sunday, followed by Sunday school for adults. Guests are welcome.

PCA&D Celebrates Ampersand Day
Pennsylvania College of Art & Design (PC&D) observed National Ampersand Day on Sept. 8, celebrating the symbol that indicates there is more of something. In PCA&D’s case, that means more art, creativity, initiative, and inventiveness. College president Michael Molla has adopted the ampersand as a symbol of the college and all that it adds to the Lancaster community.
For its celebration of National Ampersand Day, PCA&D invited all students in
the college community to design their own ampersands for competition, create their own ampersand T-shirts, take part in ampersand-themed contests and games, and line up in the shape of a giant PCA&D ampersand for a drone photo. The photo was taken in the Art Garden during a picnic, where the menu featured items with “and” in their names, such as macaroni and cheese, chicken and waffles, peanut butter and jelly, and A&W root beer.
