Dean Sauder, director of the Lancaster Mennonite High School (LMHS) production of “Seven Keys to Baldpate,” is at no loss for words when describing the show. “It’s mystery. It’s comedy. It’s melodrama. It’s farce,” stated Sauder, who added that the 1913 play by George M. Cohan has been on his shortlist for several years. With a cast of 18, an almost completely black-and-white set and costumes, and a couple of unexpected twists near the end, “Baldpate” will play in the LMHS Fine Arts Center, 2176 Lincoln Highway East, Lancaster, at 7 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 25; Friday, See LMHS Play pg 6

“A Waiting Game” Kinzer Fire Company Members Gather To Make Sauerkraut By Ann Mead Ash
Lina, a client of Esperanza International, a partner of HOPE International in the Dominican Republic, runs a colmado, a convenience stand, in a bus station. Lina’s business has allowed her to support her family after her husband hurt his back. The HOPE International 2018 annual breakfast will be held on Friday, Nov. 16, at Calvary Church, 1051 Landis Valley Road, Lancaster.
Dwight Groff of the Kinzer Fire Company knows his sauerkraut. After all, he remembers the first pork and sauerkraut dinner the fire company held on New Year’s Day in 1978. The main purpose of gathering fire company members in the fall is to make sauerkraut for that meal, but the fire company has found that some area residents do not want to wait until the new year to taste the company’s kraut. “We make a total of five 30-gallon drums and five 50-gallon drums,” explained Groff. “We sell all the 30-gallon drums and two of the 50-gallon drums to the public.” The sauerkraut is scheduled to be sold at the fire company, See Sauerkraut pg 8
Dwight Groff of the Kinzer Fire Company is getting ready to put the 2018 batch of sauerkraut to bed. The kraut will ferment at a constant cool temperature for about six weeks, and then the fire company will offer some of it for sale in December and use some for a special pork and sauerkraut dinner on Jan. 1.
