equea Valley is playing the percentages. Only 30% of Pequea Valley Secondary (PVS) graduates will attend a four-year college or university. Instead, nearly 60% of graduates will go into trades. The district is playing to those stats. Oct. 8 was Manufacturing Day at PVS, part of a larger Manufacturing Week. Seventh- and eighth-grade students at the school were put through a dozen stations that ranged from woodworking to PVC to welding, using different tactics to help students explore future careers. “ We give them all kinds of options,” said Jamiel Smoker, a PVS teacher who was operating the woodworking station. “Why not train them for what they’re choosing anyways? ... If we are continuing to push for college, that’s almost malpractice.”

At most stations, students were grouped in small teams with the task of accomplishing a common goal.

Smoker explained that some students should go to a traditional fouryear institution for their desired career, but that Pequea Valley is rightfully allowing students to have

more freedom in what they learn. The day goes hand in hand with the district’s First Choice program, an initiative that fosters workforce development to better prepare See Manufacturing pg 6

The Intercourse Library will hold its annual fundraising gala on Saturday, Nov. 7, from 6 to 8:30 p.m. at the library, 31 Center St., Intercourse. A meal, wine tasting and silent auction will be part of the event. The annual event returns to its “Gala” branding after it was reworked to celebrate the library’s 50th anniversary last year, when it was known as the “Golden Jubilee.” The gala started in 2011 before

being halted during COVID. Prior to that point, around 120 people would attend annually. Now, the numbers have started to creep back up. “It’s an evening in the library for people just to relax and enjoy themselves,” said library board member Michele Lichty. The meal will be headlined by the event’s famous crab and corn chowder. “I forced my husband to make it,” Lichty said. “He used to do all the Many sweet treats will be available food for the gala, and then we got at the gala, many of which have

The Biggest Event of the Year BY LOGAN MOYER

Trunk or Treat has become a beloved tradition in the Paradise Township Community. Started in 2023, the township will host its fourth annual Trunk or Treat event on Friday, Oct. 23, from 6 to 8 p.m. at Paradise Community Park, 6 London Vale Road, Gordonville. Along with the trunks, the event will feature free food, fun games and community fellowship. “This is probably our biggest and most attended event that we have each year,” said Karren Farra, township manager. “Since we started, we get at least around 400 people every year, so we’re hoping to keep that streak going.” The highlight of the event is the trunks; Farra said that she is hoping to have over 20 trunks this year. Along with the trunks, the Paradise Township Lions Club and the Bank of Bird-in-Hand will bring their trailers, designed for a walk-through. Those interested in designing a trunk for the event should contact Farra at townshipmanager@ paradisetownship.org. Electric will be provided if needed. Businesses are asked not to sell items with their trunks, and Farra asked that the trunks not be too scary. Trunks should be set up by 5:30 p.m. on the day of the event. “Everybody comes and they do their own unique decorations and designs,” she explained. “Nothing too scar y because there’s a full range of kids; we have kids from babies in strollers up to teenagers that come.” The township will provide free hot dogs, nachos, hot apple cider, hot chocolate and water See Trunk-or-Treat pg 9

While we use sheet music as well, the style needs to be studied by ear in order to capture the essence of music. That probably creates the greatest challenge for musicians lear ning Celtic music ,

age from 8 to 70. Those musicians play fiddles, keyboards, guitars, cellos, bodhrans, f lutes and a double bass. “I think the band is unique in the wide range of a ges and abilities ,” said King, a resident of Ephrata. “We try to have a place for everyone to participate. We want people to know that anyone is welcome to come give the band a try.” In collaboration with the dancers, the Ceili Band performs about four times a year, at venues and events like the Lititz Fire and Ice Festival, the Pennsylvania Renaissance Faire, Highland Presbyterian Church and the Mar yland Irish Festival. “Celtic music is beautiful and attainable for anyone,” said King, “whether you want to dust off your fiddle and join us at practice or come out to one of our

performances. We hope to pass on the joy of music to everyone around us.” The Ceili Band was formed about five years ago, around the same time that dance instructor Esther Pujol was piecing together the Doherty Petri School of Irish Dance. It turned out to be a match made in Irish music heaven. “I had been teaching fiddle lessons at the Celtic Center and started a group practice with some of my students, along with a few other musicians from the dance school,” said King. “Esther was, at the same time, putting together numbers with the dancers, some of them involving both the band and the dancers together. The idea was Esther’s brainchild, and we worked it out along with the help of many other incredible teachers and musicians over the years.”

Desserts will include pepper lane chocolates, Pellman’s cheesecake, donuts from M&A Sweet Treats, sticky buns from Michael’s Homestyle Breads, Sweet Shenanigans’ cupcakes and hot milk cakes from library board member Sadie Ebersol.

Shrimp cocktails will also be offered, along with a wine tasting. Some of the wine is from local donations. The Caring Cup has also donated coffee and tea for those who wish for a nonalcoholic drink. Other considerations are provided by the Kitchen Kettle. “We always have coffee, tea, punch and water,” Lichty explained. “I don’t want people to think that they’re just coming for wine.” Tickets are required for the event; preregistration is not required. If attendees do wish to preregister, do so via mail by Sunday, Nov. 1.

A boisterous list of items in the silent auction include pieces from local artists, tickets to Longwood Gardens and a men’s basket with books and craft beer. Manufacturing from pg 1 Align Wealth Strategies approached the district about starting a manufacturing day, explained math teacher Christy Collins. “ They said that in 10 years we’re really going to have a problem because there’s all these jobs in m a n u fac t u r i n g l o c a l l y and there’s nobody to fill them,” she said. “They’re here building a barge, (finding out) what can hold the most washers. ... You’re making a product, you’re working together.” Most of the stations tasked students with a problem and had them work in groups to come up with a solution, but others had students watch videos or use tools like virtual welding kits or virtual reality headsets to learn about different aspects of manufacturing.

GARDEN & MULCH • Bark & Leaf Mulch Blend • Mushroom Mulch

Earlier in the week, students took a trip to the Lancaster County CTC to learn about its programming. Friday, after Manufacturing Day, students visited local businesses to see what they learned applied in the field. Later this school year,

the seventh- and eighthgrade students will fill out their high school class schedule and select possible First Choice career options. For many Pequea Valley students, Manufacturing Day could be the first step towards a lifelong career.
