Lancaster GOTR Volunteers Selected For National Recognition

hen Girls on the Run (GOTR) Lancaster program director Jennifer West and development director Sarah Yohe realized the caliber of some of the local organization’s volunteers last spring, they each wrote letters nominating some of them for the national Remarkable Volunteer Award given by GOTR International. The nonprofit, which promotes good choices for a lifetime of selfrespect and healthy living among girls, chooses 36 winners from hundreds of entries.

In August, West and Yohe heard that some of their nominees were among the winners. Rahwa Teklai, who lives in Manheim Township, was nominated by Yohe and was chosen as a fundraising winner for her work as a SoleMate. Four Paradise Elementary School coaches Falon Doutrich, Brooke Sexton, Kristen Rogers, and Val Ruhl - were chosen as winners in the coaching category.

Harvest Dinner from pg 1 Quarryville. Executive director Deb Riddell shared that for a long time, the nonprofit counseling center has had an annual fall banquet that has traditionally taken the form of a dinner and a program. An offering was accepted to benefit New Hope. This year, the format of the banquet was changed to accommodate COVID-19 safety guidelines.

Instead of a program, diners will receive a booklet with information about New Hope and the event sponsors. And rather than a freewill offering, a price has been set for the tickets.

“Over 90% of the clients who are seen at New Hope receive financial assistance for their counseling sessions,” Riddell related. “Hardly anybody pays the full price, but New Hope always wants to continue to offer counseling, even when people can’t afford it. That’s where fundraisers come in.”

revenue to support New Hope. Like many other businesses, it remained inoperational between March 16 and June 3. “Since the thrift store was closed for over 11 weeks due to COVID, that greatly impacted our budget,” Riddell said.

Although income has been down, Riddell is planning for growth. She has been working with a SCORE LancasterLebanon mentor to strengthen New Hope and enable it to serve counseling clients for years to come. Riddell is currently seeking to hire a counseling supervisor who will promote therapy and support the other counselors who work at New Hope. “The position is listed several places,” Riddell said. “I’m waiting (for the right person). God’s time is not always our time.”

Worse, they’ve exploited the coronavirus epidemic as an excuse to force churches to close while leaving Walmarts, casinos, liquor stores and abor on clinics open. Each of us has the power to stop this.

If God did not want us to have an ac ve role in His plans, He would not have called us to ac on repeatedly throughout Scripture. Again and again, from Genesis to Revela on, He calls on His people to act, to stand against evil, and to stand up for the needy and vulnerable (Isaiah 6:8, Ma hew 28:18-20, Ephesians 5:11, Proverbs 29:2, Proverbs 31:8-9). If we sit on the sidelines while every good thing our na on stands for is destroyed, we will have violated far more Scripture than the handful of passages that may be misused to jus fy inac on.

Kenny Barley and Braden Steele have performed locally for several years, and they lead worship at NPMC. Barley plays banjo and bass guitar, while Steele plays guitar and sings.

Additionally, a baking contest will be held during the fall fest. The categories are cookies, cakes, pies, and pumpkin recipes. Anyone may enter homemade baked goods by 4 p.m. NPMC pastor Keith Roberts, along with two other church members, will judge the entries, starting at 4:30 p.m. Ribbons will be awarded to first-, second-, and third-place winners.

Refreshments will be offered during the fall fast.

S’mores, hot chocolate, and cider will be free of charge.

Walking tacos and hot dogs will be sold for a small fee.

Baked goods provided by Liz’s BTO of Holtwood will be available by donation.

“Celebrate Recovery is not just for drugs and alcohol. It’s for anybody with a hurt, a habit, or a hang-up who wants to work on whatever they need to work on while having a supportive group,” said Providence Church Celebrate Recovery (CR) leader Dannel Wissler. “When people come, rest, and learn, they grow. We sometimes call it ‘Monday night church in the basement.’”

Nearly every Monday evening for 10 years, Providence Church, 269 Cinder Road, New Providence, has hosted a CR group meeting.

More than 30,000 CR groups have been established around the country.

“It’s a healthy faith environment where you can share and talk and just be real,” said CR leader Brad Duvall. He instigated the formation of the local group while in recovery with the Naaman Center.

“The support group aspect is important,” Wissler added.

“We’re not there to fix each other; we’re there to learn from each other.”

Meetings typically follow an identical schedule. A meal is served, then children, teenagers, and adults gather

Providence Church has hosted a Celebrate Recovery group for a decade.

Lessons and games are provided for the youngsters. The adult meetings alternate each week between a testimony from someone who has made progress in their recovery and a lesson based on the 12 Steps and the Beatitudes from the Bible. Providence Church lead pastor Dwight Lefever has been part of the group since the beginning and often teaches the lessons.

Prior to the shutdown in March, about 130 adults and children attended each week.

“It’s a lot when you consider the average attendance of a church in the U.S. is 70. We never anticipated that, but we prepared ourselves,” Duvall commented.

“The biggest shift came when we could minister to all age groups, including children, teens, and a fully staffed nursery.”

From there, the attendees will go outside or be divided into small groups to converse inside. Wissler noted that the leaders are working out the logistics for safely serving meals again, and the children’s program will soon resume.

“The church was really gracious in allowing us to start back up,” Duvall remarked. “We lost two people to addiction during the shutdown. We felt a sense of urgency to get everybody back together. We all need positive encouragement spoken into our lives. Without it, it can be a pretty dark world.”

Typically, the dairy bar is staffed by several local nonprofits, who share the proceeds, but the logistics of scheduling them were complicated, so the fair board opted to provide its own volunteers, Lowery said. In fact, milkshakes were not originally part of the menu.

“We weren’t going to do milkshakes, but that was the first question people asked,” Lowery said.

Proceeds from the dairy bar and kitchen will go to the Solanco Fair Association.

This year’s premium amounts are still undetermined, as the state has not released the funds. “We’ll send checks for premiums and the livestock auction when it all clears,” Lowery added.

Fair Food Day will be held rain or shine. Attendees are asked to follow social distancing and wear masks as directed by state guidelines. All food service workers will wear personal protective equipment and follow state protocols. Large sneeze shields will also be set up to protect workers and customers.

“We’re just happy to do this for the community.

Nobody on the fair board wanted to cancel the fair, but we did it for the safety of the community,” Lowery said.

“Hopefully next year we’ll be back to normal and we’ll have a normal fair.”

Duvall also credited the action of keeping Jesus Christ at the center of the program as crucial to its decade-long existence. “We put all our trust in Him to keep us safe and give us wisdom,� Duvall said. “People are searching. The need something, a way. When He is at our center, it takes a lot of weight off our shoulders. We continue to lead people in His direction.�

Participation in CR is open to anyone, and Duvall described it as a highly diverse group.

Attendees come from all walks of life and hail from local municipalities to as far away as Lititz and Baltimore. Individuals are dealing with substance abuse, grief, mental health issues, and more. Duvall has attended trainings and built a network of ministry leaders and mental health professionals.

The lady booters broke up a three game losing streak with a hard-fought 1-0 win at Lancaster Mennonite Saturday morning, Oct. 10. Rilyn Saner’s free kick goal in the 72nd minute proved to be the game-winner.

“Rilyn has been working really hard on her free kicks so it was great to see her get one in the back of the net,” said head coach Ken Yoder. “We played well overall, moving the ball and connecting passes, but we strug-

gled, like we have all season, with finishing around the goal.”

At Octorara Thursday night, Solanco improved to 4-3 in league play with a 4-0 shutout over the Braves.

Saner, Kyla Groff and Nikki Trout all tallied first half goals while Alyssa Harpe capped the scoring in the 45th minute. Saner, Josie Janssen and Sammi Jackson were credited with assists.

ton (103) both rushed for over 100 yards and Solanco upended the Barons, 42-35, for the first time since 2007. St. Clair, who scored on a trio of keepers, also passed for 103 yards and another touchdown. Fulton found the end zone twice and Solanco improved to 3-0, along with Warwick, to lead the Section Two standings.

“It was a good win for the kids and the program,” said head coach Tony Cox. “And it was a win for the community. I was told that this was the first time since 1973 that we’ve beaten Manheim in Manheim.”

Except for scoring two straight

touchdowns in the second quarter, Solanco traded scores with the Barons from the start. They led 21-14 at the half and both teams tallied 21 second half points.

Also finding the end zone was Elijah Cunningham who snagged a sixyard scoring strike from St. Clair to make it 14-7 early in the second quarter.

“This team never gives up,” said Cox. “We had a couple of injuries and the next guys were right there ready to go. They support each other and pick each other up.”

GOLF A year ago, Logan Wagner did not advance to day two of the District Three Championships. Fast forward to October 9-10. The sophomore fired an 8-over 80 on the opening day of districts held at Briarwood Golf Club and qualified for the second day of the competition. There he settled in with a 76 for a two-day 156 total.

“Logan started the day tied for 23rd (top 11 go to states),” noted head coach Greg Minnich, “and progressed in the right direction all day, ending in a tie for 12th, just one stroke from qualifying for states.

“Logan then competed in a playoff to determine the first and second alternates for states. He birdied the first hole and set himself up as the first alternate.”

Connor Sheehan, in 2012 and 2013, was the last Solanco golfer to qualify for states.

“For Logan to shoot 80, with five double bogeys on the first day, and to come back with no bogeys on the second day, under that pressure and tougher conditions is a testament to how good a golfer he is,” said Minnich.

“Of the 11 kids who qualified for states, nine are seniors. Logan will work hard to make it back to Districts next year and make it another step further.”

BOYS’ SOCCER While the wins have been slow coming, Solanco’s progress on the field has not. Eight games into the season, the Mules have been shut out just three times. October 8 was the second straight game they tallied two goals and their 2-2 tie with Elco was the closest they’ve come to a win.

In fact, Solanco held a 2-0 lead on a free kick goal by Trent McDowell and a Jadon Yoder goal at the 25 minute mark.

“And we did have opportunities to win,” said head coach Brandon Smith, “but we got into a panic situation and reverted back into habits we’re trying to eliminate. The entire team recognized that the performance at

the end was not acceptable. That realization is an important part of competing, and growth.”

Two days later Solanco faced section leader and undefeated Lancaster Mennonite. The Mules lost a 7-0 final earlier this year but Saturday showed improvement in a 5-1 defeat. McDowell assisted Brady Robillard and prevented the shutout.

The second half of the schedule got underway October 13 at Donegal. The Mules went toe-to-toe with the Indians in the first half, falling behind 1-0 at the break. The hosts fine-tuned their offense in the second half, and found the back of the net five times in a 6-0 shutout.

Solanco hosted Cocalico two nights later and fell short 4-0 despite a 13 save effort by Joel Troutman.

VOLLEYBALL Taking advantage of three straight Lampeter-Strasburg errors, Solanco extended its lead to 24-22 and a strong serve by Anya Fisher sealed the deal as Solanco avenged their 3-2 October 8 loss with a 3-1 (25-23, 2519, 15-25, 25-22) final in Lampeter Monday, October 12.

“This was a big win for us,” said head coach Dillon Costrello. “This was one of our better offensive nights. We had 32 kills with 16 errors and many players contributing.

“It was a team effort but Jaidee Beam (12 kills, 4 aces), Jada Dow (8 kills, 4 aces) and Madi Davis (24 assists) were reliable all night,” he added.

Defensive highlights included Emma Canale and Fisher with five blocks each and Maggie Perry with 11 digs.

One night later the Mares suffered their third shutout of the season at Ephrata, 25-15, 25-17, 25-12. Canale led with five blocks and three kills.

Cheyanne Cutler also recorded three kills while Dow recorded eight digs and two aces. Davis was credited with five assists and Perry and Fisher combined for four aces.

In New Holland Thursday, Cutler recorded five kills, Canale added six blocks and Davis dished out five assists but it was the Spartans on top, 25-8, 25-15, 25-15.

Local Author Publishing Two New Books J. Arthur Moore of Narvon, author of the Civil War series “Journey Into Darkness,” has recently published his first new book in six years, and he

plans to have another book out later this fall. “West to Freedom,” which was released in September, is the story of best friends who in 1862 embark on a journey to free one of them from the bonds of

slavery. “Summer in Stewart Creek,” due out by early November, transports a young man from his hometown of Baltimore to the fictitious town of Snow Shoe, W.Va., in the summer of 1879.

“ West to Freedom,” was written prior to 2010. Moore called the 56-page story more of a novella or extended short story than a book. Set in northwest Arkansas, the tale follows Thomas Reynolds and his best friend, Daniel Russell, who was born into slavery. When Thomas learns Daniel is in danger of being sold, he and his father plan to help Daniel escape west to the Cherokee nation. “The story is totally fiction and the only thing I have ever done that directly

Moore taught school for more than 40 years, and his students who were photographed for the cover art for “West to Freedom,” John Rivera as Daniel Russell and Thomas Ristine as Thomas Reynolds, are now grown.

“Summer at Stewart Creek,” which is more than 100 pages, is based on campers Moore met at a camp on Cape Cod in 1979. “This book is totally unrelated to anything else I have done,” mused Moore.

A model railroad enthusiast, who serves as vice president of the Short Line Club in Ephrata, Moore based the setting on the layout in his basement, using realistic-looking photos at the ends of chapters. “All (the story) is imaginary,” said Moore, “including the Virginia and Truckee Railroad of West Virginia.”

WSUCC Sets Food Drive, Giveaways

Feeding the hungry is one way that Willow Street United Church of Christ (WSUCC) members endeavor to live out the love of Jesus Christ. For several years, the congregation hosted monthly community meals free of charge until interrupted by the coronavirus shutdown. The meals restarted several months ago in the form of Hands of Hope food box giveaways.

The giveaways are held on the

fourth Tuesday of the month from 4 to 6 p.m. or until the supply runs out. Each box weighs approximately 40 pounds and includes an assortment of fresh and nonperishable foods. Nine households requested and received boxes at the first giveaway, and that number had grown to 40 at the September giveaway.

“There are so many things we can’t do now, but this is something we’ve found a way to make work,” said WSUCC mem-

In addition to the Hands of Hope giveaways, WSUCC has held food drives for local food banks. An unadvertised drive a few weeks ago resulted in a pickup truck half full of nonperishable food, Overley shared.

Another food drive is planned for Friday, Nov. 6, from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., rain or shine. “We’re trying to fill a truckload,” Overley said. “Our joy would be to fill two trucks.”

Although the collection is being advertised as a Thanksgiving food drive, the list of desired items does not include traditional Thanksgiving meal ingredients. “This will be supporting (recipients) for more than just one day,” Overley pointed out.

She noted that the food drive will help to stock the shelves of the Solanco Neighborhood Ministries (SNMinistries) food bank, which provides enough food for multiple meals to households in crisis situations or once every three months as needed.

“There’s a tremendous amount of poverty (in the Southern End) and no way to get to (Lancaster-based) services,” Overley commented. “(SNMinistries executive director) Teresa Dolan does a tremendous job with the ministry and making sure their needs are met.”

WSUCC has a long history of supporting SNMinistries, Overley said. The church hosted regular food drives at Darrenkamp’s at Willow Valley for at least five years before the store closed. “We always did a Thanksgiving and Christmas food drive, as well as drives in June, July, and August, while kids are out of school,” Overley said. “The community has always been very generous.”

The Thanksgiving food drive will be held at WSUCC, 2723 Willow Street Pike North, Willow Street. Donors may drive through the traffic circle in front of the church, where masked and gloved volunteers will be on hand to remove donations from vehicles. Nonperishable items such as canned goods, breakfast foods, peanut butter, pasta, spaghetti sauce, canned fruit, canned meats and fish, and soups are desired.

Laundry detergent and monetary donations that could be used to purchase milk and other fresh items will also be accepted.

Additionally, a Christmas food drive is slated for Friday, Dec. 4.

Community Helpers To Host Harvest Party “We’re celebrating God’s goodness,” Debbie Zimmerman commented. “God takes care of us.”

Zimmerman and other members of Living Stones Vineyard Church, 2292 Robert Fulton Highway, Peach Bottom, have planned an outdoor harvest party on Saturday, Oct. 24.

Members of the public are welcome to drop in any time between 3 and 6:15 p.m. to enjoy a variety of activities and entertainment. A small display of fireworks will follow at dusk.

In the event of rain on Oct. 24, the harvest party will be held from 3 to 6:15 p.m. on Sunday,

Oct. 25.

Community helpers are part of God’s goodness, Zimmerman noted, so the church has partnered with its neighbors, Wakefield Ambulance Association (WAA) and Robert Fulton Fire Company (RFFC), to produce the Trunk or Treat aspect of the harvest party. Part car show, part sweets giveaway, the Trunk or Treat is open to anyone who would like to exhibit a vehicle. Festive decorations on the vehicles and items to distribute to visitors are encouraged but not required. There is a cost to participate, and proceeds will benefit the WAA and RFFC. Additionally, the RFFC will offer fire prevention

lessons for children and adults.

“We are here to serve the community and are looking forward to this event,” RFFC assistant chief Jason Stone remarked. “We want people to know we are here for them.”

“It’s community working together,” Zimmerman said, adding that Living Stones members have been part of the WAA and RFFC for countless years.

The harvest party will also include pony cart rides and other outdoor activities. Cavod Theatre is slated to perform during the afternoon as well.

Zimmerman suggested that attendees bring chairs or blankets so they may be seated for the theatrical and fireworks performances. Additionally, attendess should be prepared to follow state guidelines for COVID-19 mitigation.
