Bellevue Presbyterian to Offer First Trunk or Treat BY LOGAN MOYER

Bellevue Presbyterian Church is switching it up this fall. The church, located at 810 Newport Ave., Gap, has traditionally held a fall festival for the community. This year, the church is switching to a trunk or treat event at the church on Saturday, Oct. 24, from 4:30 to 7 p.m. Along with the trunk or treat, the event promises food trucks, as well as plenty of candy and fun.

“It’s going to be our first year for the trunk or treat,” said event organizer Amanda Doutrich. “We’re done fall festivals for the last seven years ... we’re hoping to bring families into the church, and (the fall festivals) have not, which is unfortunate. But a lot of people in our area here in Gap, we have a lot of Mennonite Amish, and they already have churches that they go to.” Individuals, organizations and businesses in the community are welcomed to design a festive, themed trunk for the The church previously

Investing in the Library BY CATHY MOLITORIS
When Benjamin Franklin laid the groundwork for America’s first public library, he wanted everyone to have access to books, which were expensive and not readily available. Nearly 300 years later, there are more than 9,000 public library systems and 17,000 branch locations throughout the country. Most public libraries are funded by local government taxes, which constitute up to 86% of their operating revenue. The Library System of Lancaster County combines government allocations with self-raised funding and donations, a model that has become untenable, said Deb Drury, director of the Elizabethtown Public Library. Library supporters rallied to get a specific question on the general election ballot. On Tuesday, Nov. 3, voters will be asked: “Shall the county of Lancaster establish a dedicated library tax to provide for the maintenance of, and aid to, public libraries in Lancaster County at the rate of .55 mills on the dollar on all taxable real estate within the county of Lancaster?” Drury hopes people will “vote yes for libraries,” in support of the county’s 17 locations, as well as its bookmobiles. “The library tax is a property tax because it is the only legal way we can receive dedicated public funding,” Drury explained. “We do currently get public funding, but it’s not dedicated library funding. Any dollars that come throu g h L ancaster Count y and local municipalities come through the general fund, and it’s up to whomever is making See Library pg 8

event. The church will provide candy for the trunks, but does ask that those who participate keep their trunks festive and in the spirit of the event. A claw machine will also be at the event. Participants should be set up by 4:30 p.m. on the day of the event. Those interested should call the church office at 717-4424077 by Thursday, Oct. 22. Doutrich said that the church is hoping to have at least 20 trunks participate. Free food from local food trucks is another highlight of the rain-or-shine event. Strasburg-based Skip ’s Chicken, New Hollandfounded Pappy ’s BBQ , L ancaster Cupcake and Rita’s will be in attendance. When people arrive at the event, they ’ll get a ticket that will provide them with free food from the food trucks, Doutrich explained. “ We have a nice meal waiting for them,” she said. “Either you get pulled pork or brisket, or you get the chicken dish. They’ll get a ticket, and then (the food trucks) will tell us at the end how much we owe them.” Attendees at the event are welcomed and encouraged to come in costumes but are asked not to wear masks. Additionally, the church asks that attendees avoid wearing scary costumes. On the day of the event, the trunk or treat will start at 4:30 p.m.; food tr ucks will arrive around 5 p.m. Members from the greater community are invited, but those who do not already attend Bellevue Presbyterian are asked to have obtained the state’s child abuse history clearances. In the past, the fall festival drew around 300 people, Doutrich said. More information about the church and its events can be found by visiting w w w. b e l l e v u e e p c . o r g . Craft Show from pg 1 chapter holds annual golf outing, bingos and more similar fundraisers. This year, wreaths will be laid locally and nationwide on Saturday, Dec. 19. Locally, the day will begin with an opening ceremony at Pequea Valley Secondary School, 164 S. New Holland Road, Kinzers. “We have to purchase all the wreaths, so that’s quite an undertaking for that many wreaths,” Plum said.
“We’ve kind of just grown from when we started.” At the craft show, a 50/50 drawing and gift card drawing is also planned. Vendors will be selling a variety of items, including candles, woodworking items, pet treats, kitchen items and more. “We have maybe three that are direct sales that don’t make their stuff, but the majority are makers,” Plum said. “The public can
