T
he Pequea Valley Fire Department (PVFD) is making its dreams a reality. Formed as a consolidation of Kinzer Fire Company and Gordonville Fire and EMS in 2023, the department has long been hoping to move its Emergency Medical Services (EMS) training in-house. That idea came to fruition last
year, when the department graduated its first Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) class that was trained in-house. “Prior to that, we had been under another training institute,” said Abbey Beiler, EMS education coordinator at PVFD. “Myself, with some others on the leadership team, we took about nine months to write all the policies and procedures.”
Its first class of 23 students graduated earlier this year. Many have already starting working as either a volunteer, part-time or full-time EMT, some even within PVFD. The department had assistance from New Holland EMS in starting its program; Beiler noted the strength and success of New Holland’s EMT program. “I have a contact over there that helped us with some of that,

Knights for the Blind BY LOGAN MOYER
Have you ever wondered what it feels like to be blind? The Paradise Township Lions Club’s upcoming ninth annual Dinner in the Dark fundraiser might help you answer that question. Attendees at the dinner are tasked with a unique eating experience, given the opportunity to eat while under different levels of vision impairment. “What was a surprise to me when I started this Dinner in the Dark was that I assumed that people with vision issues were blind;

In accordance with National Lead Poisoning Prevention Week, Penn Medicine’s “Lead-Free Families” initiative is set to hold a free Lead-Free Kids event on Sunday, Oct. 25, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Tiny Town, 533 Janet Ave., Lancaster. The third annual event, previously held at the Lancaster Science Factor y, promises a focus on a “variety of topics related to lead, lead poisoning prevention and children’s health and safety,” including family-oriented activities, free food and lead poisoning-related resources. “The goal is just to educate the community on lead poisoning and how to prevent it,” said Meredith Lasdin, supervisor of the Lead-Free Families initiative. “Our program exists to help with that and come alongside them in the journey of lead poisoning prevention.” Lancaster County is greatly susceptible to lead poisoning due to its large number of older homes. Nearly 60% of homes in the county were built before lead paint was banned, according to the Center for American Progress. “Our housing stock is old,” Lasdin said. “Houses that were built before 1978 are at risk of having lead paint because lead paint was not banned in this country until 1978. ... The age of lead paint at this point has caused it to start breaking down, and that’s when it becomes a hazard.” “The health effects of lead poisoning cannot be understated,” said Leaha Shermeyer, outreach coordinator of LeadFree Families. “When a child is lead-poisoned, the effects of that See Lead-Free pg 4

It’s the first program of its kind in the United States and has already checked out close to 900 homes in the county for lead. “There is no other program that does this; this is a very unique investment that was made in L ancaster,” said Shermeyer. “Lead poisoning affects families living in all different types of old housing across the county, rural and urban housing.” More information about the initiative can be obtained by emailing info@ leadfreefamilies.org or by calling 717-554-5323. The program currently offers lead screening, in-home lead testing and remediation, health care and social service support, community education, outreach and public policy advocacy and education.

VisionCorps from pg 1 some of the items featured in the auction last year; all of the items in the auction are donated by community members and local businesses. Separately, there will also be a themed basket giveaway. Last year, there was a Christmas bag, a Thanksgiving basket and a case of Martin’s potato chips, among other items. White Chimneys donates the location for the event, while Yoder’s Catering provides the food. “Part of the success of Dinner in the Dark is the folks we partner with,” Dodds said. “ They also help out in making this a successful project for VisionCorps.” As in the past, a VisionCrops representative will speak at the dinner to share more about the organization and its programming. Dodds noted that the Dinner in the Dark usually attracts more than 70 attendees and typically raises around $3,500 per year. Most of them do see, they just have different types of issues with their vision.” The event will be held at 6 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 14, at White Chimneys Estate, 5117 Lincoln Highway, Gap. “ T hey even provide goggles that simulate the different sight issues that people might have,” said Dodds, who explained that diners can choose what level of impairment they would like to simulate, using tools like the goggles and blindfolds. Funds raised through the event will benefit VisionCorps, a Lancaster-based nonprofit that seeks to empower individuals who are blind or vision impaired to attain independence. In the event’s history, it has raised $25,000 for the organization. At the Lions International convention in 1925, Helen Keller challenged the Lions to be “knights for the blind in the crusade against darkness.” Supporting VisionCorps is how the Paradise Township

The Distinguished Citizen Award Dinner serves as one of the council’s premier fundraising events, supporting Scouting programs that serve more than 2,400 youths across Lancaster and Lebanon counties. During the program, local Scouts will share their personal journeys and highlight their Eagle Scout projects, offering a firsthand look at the impact of Scouting in the community.
