Upward Basketball To Return BY ANN MEAD ASH

ammy Shondelmyer, director of Next Generation Ministries at Pequea Baptist Church, 6062 Old Philadelphia Pike, Gap, is happy to invite area children to take part in Upward Basketball during the fall and winter of 2021-22. “We strive to engage in fun competition that provides instruction for kids with all levels of experience,” said Shondelmyer. Upward Basketball is a nationwide program for students in grades one through seven provided through sponsoring churches. At Pequea Baptist, children learn basketball skills, but there is also a faith-based component that works devotionals into practice sessions. Game days feature a halftime challenge with an inspirational speaker from the league or the community. “If your child is an experienced player or brand new to the game, Upward is a place where their skills will improve with practice and encouragement,” Shondelmyer said.

form drills that demonstrate skill levels, including dribbling drills, shooting drills, and a defensive skill test. Previous basketball experience is not necessary. The purpose of the evaluations is to help divide students into teams for competition. First- and second-grade boys and girls play together on coed teams. See Basketball pg 5

Advocating For Adults BY ANN MEAD ASH

BY FRANCINE FULTON

Anna Beasley, director of adult advocacy with The Factory Ministries, 3293 Lincoln Highway East, Paradise, explained that causes of poverty work kind of like a game of dominoes. “We believe poverty is a lack of resources,” stated Beasley, who listed the six areas of resources as intellectual, emotional, relational, financial, physical, and spiritual. “When you knock one of those down, they all fall down,” she explained. It is part of Beasley’s job to help Factory participants see that while it’s hard to stand all the dominoes

Heather Furlong, who taught at West Fallowfield Christian School (WFCS) for the past eight years, began her new job as school principal on July 1. She recently talked about the transition from teaching to administration. C o m m u n i t y C o u r i e r : W hat made you apply to become school principal? up at the same time, focusing on one can often help right the others. To that end, Beasley and other advocates at The Factory work to connect participants with resources and set goals. “We are relationally based, so we provide a lot of relational support through the process,” Beasley said. The Factory also offers learning tracks to help develop a future orientation. “(We help them see) that decisions (made) now affect them down the road,” said Beasley, who noted that sessions may include discussion of ways to earn money or budget while setting up to connect participants with resources.
