PVPL Schedules Annual Fundraising Gala By Ann Mead Ash
Library director Catherine O’Sullivan cannot wait to see the Pequea Valley Public Library (PVPL) after it is set up and decorated for the annual Tasting Gala. “This is one of our major fundraisers, and it’s beautiful,” said O’Sullivan. “The library is transformed with candlelight and tablecloths.” The 2018 event, which will be held at the library, 31 Center St., Intercourse, will offer attendees tastings of a variety of foods and beverages. This year’s tasting will be held from 6 to 8:30 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 3. A few high-top tables will be set up to allow guests to set down their food between tasting stations. O’Sullivan noted that although the foods will be served in sample sizes, the offerings will be plentiful. As in the past, the menu will include hot hors d’oeuvres, and guests will be
offered samplings of roasted beef tenderloin with caramelized onions, blue cheese crumbles, and burgundy reduction, along with the popular creamy crab and corn chowder. “The soup is the high point,” said O’Sullivan. “That is a big (draw).” Shrimp cocktail, hoisin grilled pork tenderloin with Asian slaw, and local cheeses will also be served. This year’s dessert table will feature a variety of sweets, including chocolates donated by local businesses. Hot milk sponge cake will be brought to the venue by Sadie Ebersol, and sweet treats will be provided by a neighboring bakery. International coffees and teas from Ten Thousand Villages will accompany dessert options. A local greenhouse will decorate the library for the event, and music will be provided by Nathan Bankert, director of choral music at Pequea Valley High School. Friendship Community Dinner To Focus On “Simple Joys” By Ann Mead Ash
When organizers of the Friendship Community 2018 fall banquet were searching for a keynote speaker, one staff member remembered that a friend of hers had heard “Chewbacca Mom” speak. “(The friend had) said, ‘This person is great, and she has a great message,’” recalled Kyle Gamble, marketing assistant at Friendship Community. “We were looking for someone to bring laughter and joy with a faith background,” added Gamble, noting, “This is a speaker (who) will be different from those we have had in the past.” Candace Payne, also known as “Chewbacca Mom,” filled the bill for Friendship organizers, who have engaged her to speak at the annual Friendship Community banquet on See Banquet pg 8
