Several years ago, Paula Diem of Gap was taking bus trips to Arlington National Cemetery near Washington, D.C., to take part in annual Wreaths Across America ceremonies held there. When Diem learned that it was possible to hold the ceremonies locally and distribute wreaths to area veterans’ graves, she became the Gap area location coordinator for Wreaths Across America.

By involving members of the business community in a mentoring capacity, the program puts an emphasis on relationships. “Some kids don’t have the ability to develop

someone in the business sector because it’s outside of their normal context,” said Erb. “We are looking to bring in as many partnerships as possible ... to help tell the stories of ... different (career) clusters (we have distinguished) and help kids broaden their perspectives.” The program involves a number of aptitude and

social capital,” explained Eby.

To make that happen, First Choice career coordinator Jared Erb hopes to connect students with members of the local business community.

“This program is an attempt to build human capital with an adult for every kid,” added Erb, who hopes that by Job Shadowing Day, which will be held on Friday, March 24, 2023, the district will bus students to a number of employers around the county.

“Our kids ran down and spiked the ball, so we were on their 35-yard line with about 29 seconds left,” Choi described. “They got a sack, and we didn’t have any timeouts left.”Both defenses were stingy. The Braves also stepped up the special teams play in a crucial point.“On the last two possessions, they tried to go for it on fourth down and we stopped them both times,” Choi recalled. “On their second touchdown, we blocked the extra point kick.

Kendyl Keen made it 3-0 five minutes into the second half, capitalizing on an assist by Morgan Graham, a sophomore who’s expected to contribute consistently to the offense.“Morgan Graham was second on our team in scoring last year,” Morris Averynoted.

Pequea Valley fell behind 7-0 in the first quarter. The Braves (0-3) trimmed the deficit to one point when Orlando Stoltzfus (70 yards on 8 carries) broke free for a 32yard rushing touchdown.

Pequea Valley football coach Mike Choi had talked about the Braves playing a game where things would all fall into place in terms of defensive coverage, offensive assignments and the inexperienced squad gaining confidence.

“Everybody did their job blocking,” continued the coach. “Our touchdown came when we really needed it.”

Wreaths Across America has its roots in Harrington, Maine, in 1992, when a wreath maker discovered he had a 5,000-wreath surplus. Working with representatives in Washington, D.C., the wreath maker had the extras placed at Arlington National Cemetery. From there, the organization grew, and in 2020, 1.7 million wreaths were delivered to graves in more than 2,500 locations across the U.S.
