Recovery Program Celebrates A Year Of Impact By Ann Mead Ash

ELANCO Celebrate Recovery, a group that represents a partnership between three area churches and CrossNet Ministries and offers a Christian perspective on a 12-step recovery program, will hold a one-year anniversary barbecue on Thursday, Sept. 20, beginning at 6 p.m. In early 2017, leaders of three ELANCO-area churches, Bethany Grace, Weaverland, and Petra, felt called to partner to form a Celebrate Recovery group in New Holland. A year later, approximately 50 individuals are attending meetings held weekly at Petra Church, 565 Airport Road, New Holland, on Thursdays from 6 to 9 p.m. The impact of the ministry has been felt among both volunteers and participants, but ministry leader Carol Musser wants area residents to know more about the program. “We are looking to get the word out that (Celebrate See Recovery Program pg 8

Volunteer staff members with ELANCO Celebrate Recovery are looking forward to celebrating the chapter’s one-year anniversary at Petra Church on Sept. 20 at 6 p.m. The chapter, which offers a Christian perspective on a 12-step recovery program, meets at the church each Thursday evening.

Don Fitzkee, director of development for COBYS Family Services, easily recalls the earliest days of the organization’s existence in 1980. “We began as a teen foster care agency with foster families in private homes,” said Fitzkee. During the last few years, COBYS has grown extensively in response to the drug epidemic. “You read stories in the newspaper about people affected by the opioid crisis,” said Fitzkee, “but you don’t read about the children involved.” Fitzkee noted that many of those See COBYS pg 6

Garret Yoder, a member of Scout Troop 8, which meets at the Bird-in-Hand United Methodist Church, knew David G. Haldeman because the longtime Paradise Rotary Club member was serious about his position as charter representative with the troop. “Haldeman was the charter representative for 30 years,” said Garret’s father, Kevin. “He came to Scout picnics and banquets.” After Haldeman passed away in March of 2017, Scoutmaster Luther Wagner recommended Garret find a way to honor the Rotarian with his Eagle Scout project. “I was walking through (Flory Park off Strasburg Pike) in the summer of 2017,” recalled See Scout Project pg 8

“My favorite time of the auction is when we auction off the special projects,” said Cliff Martin, executive director at Woodcrest Retreat. “It is humbling to have people bid just to support the ministry with nothing to show for it but a tax-deductible receipt.” Martin noted that this year bidders will have the opportunity to donate funds for two special projects if they attend the annual benefit auction and Kids’ Camp Bonanza, which will be held on Saturday, Oct. 6, at Woodcrest Retreat, 225 Woodcrest Drive, Ephrata, See Woodcrest pg 4

Fundraiser from pg 1 The Intercourse Fire Company will hold the Intercourse Amish Bike Ride fundraiser on Saturday, Sept. 22. The event will begin at Intercourse Community Park, 3730 Old Philadelphia Pike, Gordonville, at 9 a.m. with a 30-mile bike ride and a 54-mile bike ride. The scenic bike rides are geared toward experienced cyclists. At 10 a.m., a relaxed, beginner-friendly, 8-mile bike ride will start. All courses will be clearly marked and include rest stops offering water and light snacks. Employees from a local bike shop will be on hand to provide support for any riders with mechanical issues. After the bike rides, a community picnic will take place at 11 a.m. It is open to both riders and nonriders. A chicken barbecue

will be hosted by the fire company. Meals for riders are included in the registration fee. Other attendees may purchase meals. During the picnic, the fire company will offer children’s firefighting challenges, such as using the fire hose to knock a ball off a safety cone. beginning at 9 a.m. “This year we have trees and shrubs to finish the Indian Rock Center project and two golf carts to replace the two (we have) that are over 20 years old,” said Martin, who added that organizers hope to raise $5,000 for each special project. For this year’s live auction, organizers have gathered a variety of items to sell to the highest bidders, including two gift certificates toward orthodontic services, a new gas grill, an ice cream maker, home décor, fall plants, tools, and loaves of homemade bread. Gift certificates will be sold on a cash-andcarry basis throughout the day, with remaining certificates auctioned at 2 p.m. Kids’ Camp Bonanza activities will begin at 9 a.m., allowing parents time to enjoy the auction while their children take part in various activities at rotating stations. Martin noted that children will be able to take part in slingshot and archery activities, visit the animals at the camp’s Nature Shack, launch rockets, paint pumpkins, and more. Competitions will include a gelatin-eating challenge at 11 a.m. In the afternoon, the camp ballfield will be

the site of several carnival-style games. A bounce house and a barrel train ride will be on-site. There is a nominal charge to participate in the afternoon games. It is a tradition at Woodcrest to auction baked goods. Children who attend the event are encouraged to enter a baked good - such as a cookie, a cookie bar, a pie, or a cake - which will be judged for prize money. At 11:30 a.m., the sweet treats will be auctioned. The special baked goods sale gives children who attend camp at Woodcrest a way to help support the ministry. The event will feature a variety of food items throughout the day. Breakfast items, including pancakes, sausage, and quiche, will be sold beginning at 8 a.m. Bidders who register prior to 8:45 a.m. will receive a free cup of coffee and a doughnut. Foods that will be available for purchase in the food tent during the

day will include chicken barbecue meals, baked potatoes with toppings, hot dogs, french fries, baked goods, beverages, and more. The annual benefit auction attracts hundreds of visitors. Funds raised by the auction are used to offset expenses and help keep camp fees affordable for families. All families that send their children to Woodcrest will benefit from the fundraiser. Woodcrest is a nonprofit organization that provides yearly summer camp experiences for more than 1,400 children on 110 acres of woodland. This year the masquerade party and dance will have an additional beneficiary, as a portion of each ticket sold will go to the Breast Cancer Research Foundation. In conjunction with that cause, cancer survivors will be recognized, and those who have died will be remembered at the event. Survivors will receive a special mask and recognition at the party. Scouting Recruitment Campaign Set The local council of the Boy Scouts of America (BSA) is a running a campaign to recruit Cub Scouts in Lancaster and Lebanon counties. Through the campaign, dubbed “Count Me In/Hooked on Scouting,” all youths ages 6 to 11 who join Scouts as new Cubs through Monday, Oct. 1, will receive a new fishing pole to keep. Also, on Saturday, Sept. 29, the council will hold fishing derbies at several locations, including Muddy Run Park, 172 Bethesda Church Road West, Holtwood, and J. Edward Mack Scout Reservation, 2 Scout Lane, Newmanstown. From 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., attendees may sign in and learn the basics of fishing. They may then fish until dusk if they wish. A local radio station will be on-site at each venue. Each derby will be a community event for parents and youths to get hands-on fishing experience. Attendees will be able to get a glimpse of the experiences, friendships, and opportunities that Scouting can offer.

In January, COBYS purchased the building located at 444 Murry Hill Circle, Lancaster, and christened it the Murry Hill Center. “On Martin Luther King Day, we had 59 volunteers there removing carpet, sanding, priming, and painting for nearly 700 volunteer hours in renovations,” Fitzkee recalled. In February, COBYS adoption and foster care staff moved to the new building, and later the Family Life Education staff joined them at that location. COBYS administration remained in Leola, and the counseling center moved to the main floor of the Leola building. Fitzkee noted that COBYS also owns two buildings in Lancaster city, including one at 171 E. King St., where the organization’s Family Life Center offers parenting programs, and the permanency unit at 134 E. King St., where a specialized foster care program operates in relationship with the Lancaster County Children and Youth Agency. “We work with

(the county agency) to reunite children with birth parents when they can (or facilitate adoptions),” Fitzkee explained. An additional counseling center is located in the First United Methodist Church of Palmyra, where COBYS works in cooperation with Palmyra Caring Community. The same situations that have caused COBYS to expand the number of staff have also led to the need for more families willing to provide foster care. “The first step (for people) interested in becoming a foster parent or adopting through COBYS is to attend (a) free, no-obligation orientation (to) get an overview of what the process involves,” said Fitzkee. Introductory sessions are held on the first and third Tuesdays of each month from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Murry Hill Center. Scout Project from pg 1 Garret. “I noticed this area was empty, and I thought it was a good spot to put an Eagle Scout project.” Garret considered what to do with the open area located in front of a stone wall, and he decided that a bench and a plaque would give area residents a chance to relax and learn about Haldeman’s service to the community. The plaque that the Paradise Rotary sponsored for the site lists Haldeman’s membership in the Bird-in-Hand Fire Company, his volunteerism with the Scouts, his charter membership with the East Lampeter Park Board, and his nearly 60 years of perfect attendance at Rotary Club meetings among his accomplishments. Garret received approval for his project from Scout administrators on Sept. 11, 2017. The park board approved the placement of a bench on the spot in the same month. He and his father, supported by his mother, Carla, began working on the bench in late 2017 and continued into the winter of 2018. “We

poured the concrete into molds at home,” explained Garret, who said the bench was completed in May and placed in the park, 416 Dohner Dr., Lancaster, on June 16. The plaque was added during a special ceremony attended by Rotary Club members and Haldeman’s widow, Mary, on Aug. 16. Garret worked with Rotary Club of Paradise president Bill Dewan to obtain the plaque. A local gardening business provided a number of perennials to be planted around the bench. Garret will meet with Scout administrators during September to complete approval for his Eagle Scout recognition. The Conestoga Valley High School senior looks forward to scheduling his Court of Honor once the approval process is finished. The program offers men’s and women’s groups for recovery and life issues, but according to Musser, more groups are being added. “For women, we have a food group for misuse of food, and we also started a codependency group,” said Musser. “On the horizon, we would love to have a men’s sexual addiction group separated (from recovery).” The barbecue celebration will include an open mic segment for testimonies. “Testimonies give people a chance to tell their stories,” said Musser. “There is something about the ground

leveling (that happens) during that time.” Musser added that testimonies reinforce that all individuals are on a journey. “There is no hierarchy,” she said. “(Instead), there is a common bond.” Assistant ministry director Karl Stoltzfus echoed Musser’s thoughts, adding that the stories often bring hope and inspiration to the hearer. “Testimonies are really helpful for people to hear (because) they are real-life stories of what God has done in people’s lives.” Running an effective chapter of Celebrate Recovery requires a number of volunteers. “What’s really needed are greeters, people to mingle, and group leaders,” said

Musser, who added that she has seen volunteers reap benefits of taking part. “The astounding thing over this past year is how much (Celebrate Recovery) has impacted the volunteers,” said Musser. “When folks see people come out of heavy-duty stuff and watch God work, you cannot be unchanged by it. Everyone can take away something from Celebrate Recovery that makes their lives more enjoyable and less stressful.” Stoltzfus had discovered Celebrate Recovery podcasts online before meeting Ken Reinford, one of the Petra pastors who was involved in founding the New Holland chapter. “I thought (the program) was phenomenal,” said Stoltzfus, who as part of the New Holland team has seen the group

function first-hand. “People who are involved in leadership have caught the vision of what Celebrate Recovery is all about,” noted Stoltzfus. He sees the impact on the community as well. “(Celebrate Recovery) is not just a recovery program; it’s a discipleship program. It’s been about building relationships,” said Stoltzfus, who has seen attendees connect to local churches to further their journeys with the Lord. Composer Will Present Concerts Salem Hellers Evangelical Reformed Church, 2555 Horseshoe Road, Lancaster, will host composer Joel Raney on Sunday, Sept. 30, during the 10:15 a.m. worship service and again at 3 p.m. Raney will perform sacred music with Salem Hellers’ Cantata Choir and All Saints Church’s Children’s Choir. The community is invited to attend. Raney started playing the piano sometime between learning to walk and learning to read, and his taste for gospel music began in a rural Baptist church in Alabama. After completing his degree in choral conducting at the University of North Alabama, he earned a master’s degree in piano performance at the Juilliard School. Since 1999, Raney has published more than 200 works of church music, including choral anthems, musicals, cantatas, handbell compositions, and

piano solos. He also serves as an editor at Hope Publishing. For more than a decade, Raney was artist-in-residence at the First Presbyterian Church of River Forest, Ill., and he currently serves as minister of music at the First Baptist Church of Oak Park, Ill. Raney’s professional pursuits extend beyond church music, as well. He has conducted national tours of Broadway productions and has been honored for his musical direction of theater productions in both Chicago and Los Angeles. Since 1988, he has worked as a composer and producer of commercial music in Chicago and has written soundtracks for more than 2,000 television and radio commercials, as well as numerous scores for short films. He performs throughout North America as a piano soloist and in duo concert with organist

Joel Raney and fellow Hope Publishing editor Jane Holstein. Raney and Holstein have released a CD recording of organ-piano duets, and Raney has four solo piano CDs to his credit. Raney is also a choral and keyboard clinician.

Society Plans Book Signing Lancaster Mennonite Historical Society will host a book signing at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 25, with Sherry Gore and Sheila Petre, both featured authors in the new book, “Homespun: Amish and Mennonite Women in Their Own Words.” It will take place at the Martindale Mennonite Fellowship Center, 352 Martindale Road, Ephrata. Gore is the author of seven books, including “Simply Delicious Amish Cooking,” “Me, Myself, and Pie,” and “The Plain Choice.” Gore was featured in the National Geographic Channel’s “Amish: Out of Order,” and has appeared on NBC Daytime, the Today Show, Mr. Food Test Kitchen, and more. Gore, who is Beachy Amish, is a resident of Sarasota, Fla. Petre lives with her husband and their seven children in south central Pennsylvania. They are

Basket-Making Workshop Slated September

The Strasburg Heritage Society will offer a basket-making workshop on Saturday, Sept. 22, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at 28 E. Main St., Strasburg. Participants will make an egg basket, modeled after an original basket in the collection of the Landis Valley Museum. No previous experience is required. The course will be taught by Debra Hammonds, a Lancaster County native who has been exploring and teaching the art of basketry for 25 years. Hammonds demonstrates basketry at Landis Valley Museum and has taught at the museum’s annual Institute of Rural Life and Culture as well as various other guilds and

conventions in 14 states. Her basket patterns have been published in two publications and are also sold individually. The legacy of nursing care was celebrated through the inclusion of two special guests. Cassie Kohr, a student in the three-year Bachelor of Science in Nursing program, attended with Mary Coldren Kurian, a 1936 graduate of the school, then the Lancaster General Hospital School of Nursing. Now 103 years old, Mary is believed by the college to be its oldest living alumna. Kurian enjoyed a long career at Lancaster General Hospital as a nurse anesthetist, retiring in 1980. Kohr and Kurian met at Homestead Village in Lancaster, where Kohr works part time and Kurian has lived since 1996. While nursing education and practice have changed dramatically since Kurian entered the field, the two women have bonded over their shared devotion to the profession. After learning that Kurian’s 1936 class photo had been misplaced during a move, Kohr worked with the Pennsylvania College of Health Sciences’ office of alumni relations to find a replacement, which she gave to Mary as a Christmas gift last year.

The division of nursing at Pennsylvania College of Health Sciences held its second annual Dedication of Hands ceremony on Aug. 22. All nursing students were invited to take part in the event, which stresses the significance of a nurse’s hands as symbols of the holistic care nurses provide to a patient’s mind, body and spirit. The Dedication of Hands is a new ceremony for Pennsylvania College of Health Sciences nursing students, replacing the historical tradition of capping ceremonies, during which novice students would receive their cap prior to attending their first clinical experience and returning students would receive a stripe indicating their program year. During the ceremony, faculty members performed the washing and drying of hands, symbolically uniting faculty and students in the profession of nursing. Faculty member Kay Buchanan and Sage Olnick, Class of 2005, were set to offer keynote remarks during three sessions offered throughout the day.

Parks Department Sets Programs wishing to complete the Environmental Science Merit Badge may join Naturalist and merit badge counselor Mary Ann Schlegel from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. on Thursdays, Sept. 20 and Oct. 4 and 18, at the Environmental Center, 1 Nature’s Way, Lancaster. Park sessions will include information and activities to meet badge requirements, and attendance at all three meetings is necessary. Scouts will be responsible for completing some requirements on their own and sharing their findings with peers in subsequent park sessions. Scouts should

dress for outdoor activity and bring a water bottle, and a field notebook. They should also bring two empty two-liter soda bottles to the first session. Registration and prepayment are required by noon on Tuesday, Sept. 18. Family Campfire - Native Starlore will be offered to people of all ages on Friday, Sept. 21, from 7:30 to 8:30 p.m. at Millcreek Campsite 5, 19 Nature’s Way, Lancaster. Naturalist Kristyn Small will lead the program, which will feature star stories and folktales of regional Native

American groups. Attendees may bring s’more supplies and a lawn chair or blanket. Additional Family Campfire events will be held on Fridays, Oct. 26 and Nov. 9. A Fall Blooms Hike, for people age 8 and up, will be offered from 10 to 11 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 22, in Muhlenberg Wildflower Meadow. Attendees should meet at the meadow parking lot, 548 Golf Road, Lancaster, to join Small on an exploration of the meadow. Terry and Joyce Hornberger Gehman celebrated their 50th anniversary on Aug. 25 at a surprise drop-in party at Greenfield Inn in Lancaster. The party was hosted by the couple’s daughters and their families. Terry and Joyce met in 1963 at a dance at the Ephrata Rec Center while Terry was playing in a band. Joyce asked him to dance during one of his breaks. The Gehmans were married at Evangelical Lutheran Church of the Holy Trinity in Ephrata by the Rev. Franklin Patschke and the Rev. David Ebersole on Aug. 25, 1968. They have two daughters, Angela, wife of Tom Berkosky of Gilbertsville, and Lisa, wife of Geoffrey Schreibeis of Abingdon, Md. Terry was a professional musician at an early age. He graduated from Ephrata High School in 1965 and Lebanon Valley College in 1969 with a Bachelor of Science in music education. He taught for 33 years in the Conestoga Valley School

Lancaster Country Day School (LCDS) awarded four $12,000 John A. Jarvis Merit Scholarships to area students. All Middle and Upper School applicants were eligible, and scholarships are renewable each year through graduation. The scholarship honors former head of school John Jarvis, who sought to make LCDS accessible to a wide range of deserving

Pet Pantry’s Mobile Unit To Debut At Open House Visitors to the annual open house hosted by the Pet Pantry of Lancaster County at 26 Millersville Road, Lancaster, on Saturday, Sept. 22, from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. will be able to tour the organization’s new mobile unit. “We just christened it, and we’ve been debugging it. We have to tweak (the process) so it’s

The Lancaster Kennel Club will present its annual Agility Trials on Saturday and Sunday, Sept. 29 and 30, at In The Net, 798 Airport Road, Palmyra. Trials will start at 8 a.m. each day and continue until late afternoon. More than 500 individual runs are scheduled for each day, running simultaneously in multiple rings. The event will also include vendors and concessions. Admission is free. Only dogs entered in the competition may enter the venue.
