PV Braves Battle Octorara in Football

BY ARA GRIGORIAN

In an annual clash that dates back prior to Octorara being part of the Lancaster-Lebanon League, the Pequea Valley Braves and Octorara Braves battled on the gridiron Friday night, September 2, in Kinzers.

This year’s Braves battle went to the squad from Octorara as the visitors capitalized on their opportunities for a 35-0 victory.

Braeden Wood completed six passes for 105 yards, connecting with Colton Focht and Mathieux Mallon on touchdowns. Wood also ran for 22 yards, including a five-yard quarterback scamper from five yards out for the game’s first points.

Pequea Valley head coach Mike Choi talked about the inexperience yet eagerness of his young squad, citing that some missed assignments on offense and defense plus big special team plays proved to be the difference.

“On two separate occasions in special teams, they were able to get a short field,” Choi explained. “We have a young team trying to learn how to compete and do their reads, their assignments on every play. The goal for us as coaches is to have them learn the schemes on offense and defense.”

Some of the experience for Pequea Valley (0-2) is represented by returning juniors Peyton Temple, Orlando Stoltzfus and Darrell Beiler. Temple, the team’s quarterback, completed seven of 16 pass attempts for 87 yards. He connected with Beiler five times for 50 yards and twice with Stoltzfus for 37 yards.

Stoltzfus was also the Braves’ leading rusher on the day, gaining 38 yards on eight carries. Beiler picked up 25 yards on two rushing attempts.

“You need athleticism and I think we have that on our team,” said Choi. “Orlando Stoltzfus is a combination of speed, power, and strength. He is someone we are going to get the ball to in different ways - running the ball, catching it out of the backfield. He is a game changer.”

The toughness Stoltzfus brings onto the field is also evident in the way he plays middle linebacker.

“Beiler also plays outside linebacker and safety for us,” Choi added. “He also makes an impact for us on defense. He’s a tough kid with a good work ethic.”

Temple is a returning quarterback, learning the new offensive scheme.

“He has a strong arm,” said Choi. “I have all the faith in the world that he is going to have a successful season. He brings great leadership, leading through actions as well as words.”

Though Pequea’s offense was kept off the scoreboard, Choi said there were positive signs on some drives.

“I thought there were times we moved the ball well, but we would either make a mistake like a holding call or a procedure call,” he explained. “So, we were taking steps forward but taking a step back.”

BOYS’ SOCCER

In another football match with Octorara as the opponent at Kinzers, the visitors prevailed with a close shutout win. The Pequea boys’ soccer team came out on the short end of a 1-0 final in double overtime.

Bryce Goodroad manned the pipes for Pequea, making 10 saves. Octorara’s Eduardo Zavala-Lopez scored in the 97th minute to break the scoreless tie.

Pequea fell to 0-1-0 on the year.

GIRLS’ SOCCER

Coming off a season-opening 4-1 victory at Kutztown on August 30, the girls’ soccer team suffered back-to-back losses, falling to Middletown and Octorara to start September.

In a September 1 away game, Elena Esh put Pequea on the board with the game’s first goal - off a Trinity Rosa assist. The goal came in the 25th minute.

The Blue Raiders responded with the equalizer seven minutes later and took the lead one minute later. Julie Hughes, who had the game-tying goal, also scored in the opening minute of the second half as the Raiders beat the Braves 4-1.

On Tuesday, September 6, it was Octorara’s Lanie Garcia-Gomez who scored two goals in a 4-2 defeat of Pequea. Rosa and fellow freshman Abrielle Fisher each scored for Pequea in the setback. Breanne Beiler and Morgan Graham provided assists.

Graham tallied two assists and one goal in the victory at Kutztown. Kendyl Keen scored twice for the Braves. Esh netted one goal while Peyton Henshawn and Abigail Wood were each credited with an assist.

GOLF

Playing at Royal Oaks on August 24, the Pequea Valley golf team finished second with a team score of 352. Cole Stoltzfus, a sophomore who had shot a remarkable 79 in his previous outing at Conestoga, shot an 82 as did senior Matthew Lapp, coming off an 81 at Conestoga six days earlier.

Both Dylan Stoltzfus and fellow sophomore Isaiah Slabaugh shot 94’s at Royal Oaks while Trenton Stoltzfus shot a 108 and Bo Smucker finished with a 116

TENNIS

In a Section Three girls’ tennis match at Pequea, the Braves fell to Elco 7-0 on August 31.

Alexis Denny had a 6-4 triumph in the first set of number one singles for PV but lost a close second set by the same margin and the tiebreaker 10-4.

Cassidy Werner and Kyleigh Jarvis played a tough third doubles match but were not able to overtake Nicole Books and Sarah Carlson of Elco in an 8-2 final.

CROSS COUNTRY

The girls’ cross country teams won a Section Three race against Lancaster Mennonite on Tuesday, September 6. The girls’ team, led by Aubrey Ressler’s first-place finish at 20:08, won their race 15-21. The boys’ team suffered a 19-38 loss at Pequea Valley.

Cameron Beiler along with fellow juniors Hugh Johnson and Ryan Flaim led the boys’ team. Beiler took second at 18:36 while Johnson’s 20:17 and Flaim’s time of 20:46 earned them seventh and eighth, respectively. Nathan Sensenig posted a time of 20:59.

Also leading the girls’ squad was Caleigh Vincent (3rd, 21:04) freshman Abby Beiler (4th, 24:50) and Izzy Hershey (6th, 26:45)

“Even though both programs have incomplete teams, I’m very excited for the runners this season,” said head coach Keith Andrew. “The runners this year should have a lasting impression.”
