On a walk the two women took that day, both noticed a “for rent” sign in a building near where they lived. The shop at 3561 Old Philadelphia Pike, Intercourse, was available for a new business. The neighbor suggested Kim rent it. Kim learned who owned the building and asked questions. Learning that the rent was reasonable, Kim began to pray. Two days later, she decided to go ahead. “I had such peace about (the decision),” Kim recalled. She gave a lengthy notice at her place of employment, and by mid-July, she was able to devote herself full time to opening a new business.

“He is a Goldador,” said Jenn Rissler, who is raising Honor, a four-month-old puppy for Phoenix Assistance Dogs (PAD). Honor, who is all black except for one white spot on his stomach, does not look much like a gold breed of anything, but Rissler is quick to pull up photos of Honor’s mom, a white golden retriever, and his dad, a black Labrador retriever. Rissler became a volunteer puppy raiser for PAD in January, when she received a dog that was soon
On Father’s Day this year, Kim’s children gathered at the building to help her paint and refurbish to prepare to open The Bees’ Needs Family Thrift & Collectibles, a store she hopes will be up and running by the end of September. Gathering items for the store has been an exercise in trust. “God has been connecting me to people,” said Kim, who has found new items through store overstock, such as socks, underwear, and curtains, and has attended auctions to bring other things to the store. “People I have known are spreading the word and giving me nice things,” said Kim, whose store will sell men’s, women’s, and children’s clothing, and shoes for everyone, along with accessories, toys, books, household items, and collectibles. Kim is particular about what she will offer customers. “I want to sell quality items, so all the kid’s clothes are very gently used or new,” she said. “That is my goal,” she noted, adding that she hopes both local shoppers and visitors to the area will find items of interest in her store.
When Micah Lehman and Elizabeth Hoover, youth center directors with The Factory Ministries, took 17 Pequea Valley-area students to Camp Orchard Hill for summer camp, they were hoping to see students make memories and experience life-changing moments. “What was really neat this year is that we had four students make the decision to commit their lives to Christ,” said Lehman. “The point is that we want them to hear and respond to the Gospel. That’s one of the highlights of not only that week but of the nearly five years I have been on staff here.” The Factory pg 4

Kim Mowery of Intercourse knew that the one-year anniversary of the day her husband, Dennis, died would not be easy. So, Kim took May 17, 2022, off from her job as assistant manager at New Hope Clothing Closet in Quarryville. Her neighbor and friend offered to spend the day with her.

The name The Bees’ Needs was based on Kim’s son Jared often remarking that something was the “bee’s knees.” Kim’s youngest daughter, Sarah June, nicknamed Junie Bee, succumbed to a brain tumor in 2008. Kim had seven bees, one to represent each of the children, carved into her husband’s gravestone. When Kim first searched the name, there were several businesses called The Bee’s Knees. Jared suggested she change it to The Bees’ Needs, which worked better for a thrift shop. Mowery also intends to give back to local organizations, setting aside certain pieces of men’s clothing for Restart Training Center Ministries. She also she hopes to spotlight area nonprofits using a register feature that allows customers to round up to the next dollar as a donation. Another goal Mowery has set is to use her faith to uplift customers. “I want to be able to share Jesus in such a way that people want to come back because they have peace just walking in the door,” said Mowery. “When God shared this opportunity with me, I didn’t see dollar signs; I saw an opportunity to share HisMowerytestimonies.”saida few maintenance issues have delayed opening the shop, but she hopes to be seeing customers by the end of September.

The students’ accepting Christ was the culmination of a week that included speaker and rapper George Moss giving what Lehman called a “simple, clear Gospel presentation.” “The whole idea was that when you are at camp, you experience things in a different way,” said Lehman. “You are able to get closer with one another and closer withStudentsGod.” in grades seven through 12 went to camp from Aug. 7 through 12 to take part in activities including kayaking, canoeing, and fishing in the camp’s lake. “They have a blob,” said Lehman, who described the device as a long air cushion. “A kid sits on one end, and someone jumps on the other end, and it launches the one sitting into the air (and into the lake),” Lehman explained. Orchard Hill, located in Dallas, Pa., also offers a zipline, a giant swing, a pool, rock climbing, pedal carts, a skatepark, sports fields, and hiking. To help students focus on the theme for the week, which was “Letters From Camp,” Hoover and Lehman required students to turn in their phones. “We are looking at that unique week away from distractions,” said Lehman, who added that students were asked to write letters to their future selves. They were asked to include how they felt at that time, what they hoped to get out of camp, and some encouragement. “Hopefully, they can read these letters in the future and see where (changes) started,” said BecauseLehman.thatweek of camp is designated for students from youth centers, the cost is heavily discounted, and students’ families are asked to contribute a small amount if they can, but Lehman emphasized that payment should not be a determining factor for a student to attend. Instead of asking families to pay, The Factory works to raise the approximately $300 needed for a student to attend. “We fundraise for almost all of it through social media asks and emails to (donors),” said Lehman. Student sponsorships are welcomed. The Factory Youth Center is part of The Factory Ministries, located at 3293 Lincoln Highway East, Paradise. The New Holland Farmers Fair is an event steeped in tradition, yet it is new and different each year. This year, the Farmers Day Association, which organizes the fair, is celebrating the 90th event, and the directors have made some changes to keep things exciting.

Fair president Paulene Redding has been handling the parade for many years. In 2021, she changed the lineup based on requests from high school bands that travel to take part. This year, Redding has designated specially priced sponsorships for Division 1 of the parade to help cover the costs of upgrades to the association’s building at the corner of Roberts Avenue and Franklin Street. Those wishing to help with this effort may call 717-354-5880.
New this year will be nightly entertainment on a stage at the corner of Main Street and Custer Avenue. The Kracker Beez will play on Thursday, Sept. 29. The Jess Zimmerman Band will perform on Friday, Sept. 30, and Josh Squared Band will take to the stage on Oct. 1. “It’s going to be a lot of fun. It’s really good quality entertainment,” said Kristie Overly, who handles premiums for the fair. This year New Holland will select a fair queen to send to the state competition. The crowning of the queen will take place at the Farmers Fair building on Monday, Sept. 26, at 7 p.m. Queen candidates must be exhibiting something in the farm show, and the queen will be judged based on a personal interview, knowledge and experience of New Holland Fair, a presentation about the New Holland Fair, a written essay, poise, appearance, and ability to communicate. The queen and her court will ride in the New Holland parade. Judges will include Eileen Sama, Cindy Potts, and Abigail Emerson. One returning event will be the tug-of-war competition, with a first prize of $1,500. This year, the competition is open to youth groups, sports teams, and other groups. The bucket brigade competition, once held only between fire company ladies’ auxiliaries, is planned this year for teams of all women or mixed teams. The animal competitions will be held in the tents on Fulton Street. Swine will be judged on Tuesday, Sept. 27, at 5:30 p.m. Goats will be judged at 1:30 p.m. on Sept. 29, and sheep will be judged the same day at 4 p.m. The competition is open to 4-H and FFA members from Lancaster County.

Aaron’s Acres Sets School Year Programs

BY ARA GRIGORIAN In an annual clash that dates back prior to Octorara being part of the Lancaster-Lebanon League, the Pequea Valley Braves and Octorara Braves battled on the gridiron Friday night, September 2, in Kinzers. This year’s Braves battle went to the squad from Octorara as the visitors capitalized on their opportunities for a 35-0 victory. Braeden Wood completed six passes for 105 yards, connecting with Colton Focht and Mathieux Mallon on touchdowns. Wood also ran for 22 yards, including a five-yard quarterback scamper from five yards out for the game’s first points. Pequea Valley head coach Mike Choi talked about the inexperience yet eagerness of his young squad, citing that some missed assignments on offense and defense plus big special team plays proved to be the“Ondifference.twoseparate occasions in special teams, they were able to get a short field,” Choi explained. “We have a young team trying to learn how to compete and do their reads, their assignments on every play.
BOYS’ SOCCER In another football match with Octorara as the opponent at Kinzers, the visitors prevailed with a close shutout win. The Pequea boys’ soccer team came out on the short end of a 1-0 final in double overtime. Bryce Goodroad manned the pipes for Pequea, making 10 saves. Octorara’s Eduardo Zavala-Lopez scored in the 97th minute to break the scorelessPequeatie.fell to 0-1-0 on the year.
GIRLS’ SOCCER Coming off a season-opening 4-1 victory at Kutztown on August 30, the girls’ soccer team suffered back-to-back losses, falling to Middletown and Octorara to start September. In a September 1 away game, Elena Esh put Pequea on the board with the game’s first goal - off a Trinity Rosa assist. The goal came in the 25th minute. The Blue Raiders responded with the equalizer seven minutes later and took the lead one minute later. Julie Hughes, who had the game-tying goal, also scored in the opening minute of the second half as the Raiders beat the Braves 4-1. On Tuesday, September 6, it was Octorara’s Lanie Garcia-Gomez who scored two goals in a 4-2 defeat of Pequea. Rosa and fellow freshman Abrielle Fisher each scored for Pequea in the setback. Breanne Beiler and Morgan Graham provided assists. Graham tallied two assists and one goal in the victory at Kutztown. Kendyl Keen scored twice for the Braves. Esh netted one goal while Peyton Henshawn and Abigail Wood were each credited with an assist.

“You need athleticism and I think we have that on our team,” said Choi. “Orlando Stoltzfus is a combination of speed, power, and strength. He is someone we are going to get the ball to in different ways - running the ball, catching it out of the backfield. He is a game changer.” The toughness Stoltzfus brings onto the field is also evident in the way he plays middle“Beilerlinebacker.alsoplays outside linebacker and safety for us,” Choi added. “He also makes an impact for us on defense. He’s a tough kid with a good work ethic.”Temple is a returning quarterback, learning the new offensive scheme. “He has a strong arm,” said Choi. “I have all the faith in the world that he is going to have a successful season. He brings great leadership, leading through actions as well as words.”Though Pequea’s offense was kept off the scoreboard, Choi said there were positive signs on some drives. “I thought there were times we moved the ball well, but we would either make a mistake like a holding call or a procedure call,” he explained. “So, we were taking steps forward but taking a step back.”
The goal for us as coaches is to have them learn the schemes on offense and defense.”
Alexis Denny had a 6-4 triumph in the first set of number one singles for PV but lost a close second set by the same margin and the tiebreaker 10-4. Rissler has been working to train Honor since he came to live with the Rissler family at 13 weeks of age. He was housebroken within about three weeks of arrival. Basic commands are next, including learning to touch her hand with his nose, a command trainers can build on to teach Honor to open a door. “He knows ‘sit’ and ‘down’,” said Rissler, who explained that Honor is learning to sit patiently under her legs in a restaurant. He also knows the commands “leave it” and “off.” Treats are handed out liberally during this stage of training.Inaddition, Rissler takes Honor to two PAD training sessions each month - one private and one group lesson. She has worked with both Zoccola and PAD trainer Terri Willner. Rissler is also tasked with taking Honor into the community. “Experiences are vital,” she said, noting that she has taken Honor to restaurants and on a trip to Pittsburgh. While he is out and about, Honor wears a special vest with a no-pull harness underneath and a Martingale“(Puppiescollar.intraining) are allowed basically everywhere,” said Rissler, who added the pups have the same rights as service dogs, providing they are not causing issues. Support from PAD during the puppy-raising experience has been plentiful, according to Rissler. “Linzey sends out information regularly about infections going around,” she said, adding that there is a PAD Training Club on Facebook where information for puppy raisers is posted. “There are videos, things to read, modules to learn from, and housebreaking tips,” said Rissler. “There’s a lot of support.”Forhis part, Honor has proven himself to be very teachable. “He is easy to train.
