On Saturday, Sept. 12, starting at 11 a.m., the company will host an open house and housing ceremony to celebrate its brand new 2026 E-ONE CR-100 Cyclone aerial ladder truck.

The Christiana Historical Society (CHS) will hold its annual Christiana Heritage Days event on Friday, Sept. 11, through Sunday, Sept. 13.

The celebration will include music, food, historical displays, children’s activities and guided wagon tours throughout the town. Visitors will also be able to learn about the Christiana Resistance, a slave rebellion that took place 175 years ago on Sept. 11, 1851.

“That’s why we always have (Heritage Days) at that time frame,” said CHS member Patti Shrom.

Cherry Crest to Host Annual Hometown Hero Festival

Cherry Crest Adventure Farm will host its annual Hometown Hero Festival at the far m, 150 Cherry Hill Road, Ronks, on Saturday, Sept. 19, at noon.

The day will be one “filled with gratitude, celebration and community spirit as we pay tribute to the courageous individuals who serve our hometowns,” according to organizers.

The event began in 2021, intentionally coinciding with the 20th anniversar y of the 9/11 attacks in 2001. That year, the entire maze theme at the farm was centered around hometown heroes. That original event in 2021 has turned into an established yearly tradition, one that will kick off the farm’s fall schedule this year.

This year ’s festival lineup includes the Pequea Valley Fire Depar tment , Paradise Fire Department, Strasburg Police and Lancaster EMS. Department participation is subject to change based on staffing and emergency calls.

Admission to the farm is required to attend the festival.

There is no additional cost beyond admission. A portion of ticket sales for the event will be donated to local volunteer fire departments and other emergency response agencies.

“It’s exciting,” said Sara Myer, an organizer of the event. “You not only get a chance to meetand-greet with the firefighters, the police officers, it’s a good way to build those relationships and then be able to give back to them, too.”

Activities will be centered around the William P. Brinton House, 17 Green St., Christiana, which is the CHS’s headquarters.

Other events will take place within walking distance at the Christiana Freight Station, 10 Railroad Ave.; the Christiana Masonic Lodge, 115 E. Slokom Ave.; and the Underground Railroad Center at Zercher’s Hotel, 11 Green St., which will be open for tours.

This year will be the first Heritage Days celebration with the porch of the Brinton House accessible, as well as the inside of the house. “ You can come on the porch, but we ’re not completely done with the outside,” said CHS member Charlene Ranck. “There’s still windows, ceiling and painting here that still needs to be done, but it’s sturdy enough that we can have 50 or more persons out here.”

The opening event will be on Friday, when the Barlee Red Band and the Days of Old Band will present a concert on the lawn of the Brinton House from 6 to 8 p.m. The Barlee Red Band will open the show at 6 p.m., followed by an intermission and then the Days of Old Band around 7 p.m.

Attendees are encouraged to bring a chair or blanket for the show.

“It’s a man on bass guitar and a woman that sings,” Ranck said of the Barlee Red Band. “They’re local, and they’ll sing for a little bit, and then we’ll have our intermission, where we’re going to do a little bit of an update on what’s going on here, what the historical society is doing and what this weekend event is going to be.”

For the first time this year, the Friday concert will be accompanied by free hot dogs and ice cream. A freewill donation bucket will be available at events throughout the weekend.

Saturday’s extensive list of events includes a Civil War encampment, countless historical displays and vendors. When attendees arrive, they are asked to stop by the welcome booth and get a map of the day’s activities.

On Saturday, the Mocha Motion and Skip’s food trucks will be on the scene with food and drinks available for purchase.

For kids, Saturday will br ing a local mag ician and a petting zoo. Also Saturday, historic wagon tours of the borough will be offered for free. Tour guides will provide information about each site on the tour. The tours, also free for the first time this year, will run every hour from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

“We’ll highlight probably a good bit of the main town and what’s happening,” Ranck said. “We’ll pass a lot of the areas as things are going on, too. We’ll be highlighting most of the

A l s o S a t u r d a y, t h e Moores Memorial Library and Christiana Borough Hall will be open for the event. There is a diorama commemorating the resistance that will be opening up at the latter; the library also has a display with some history of the resistance.

Members of the society emphasized that attendees at the event are not to walk across the railroad tracks at any time. Instead, they are asked to use the nearby underpass to safely cross the tracks.

The anniversary of the resistance is incredibly meaning ful to Darlene Colon, society president, who is a descendant of one of the resistance’s partici-

pants. The society is always searching for more descendants of the Christiana Resistance; the society is planning for a group photo of descendants during the event.

The Heritage Days celebration will conclude on Sunday with Friendship Day, which will include a community church service with prayers and music on the lawn of the Brinton House, followed by a potluck lunch. Attendees are asked to bring food to share at the potluck.

“Everybody is welcome,” Shrom said. “We get people from all over coming down h e re , f ro m L e o l a a n d Manheim, locally all of the surrounding towns, even a few from Maryland. We had a good range of people attend.”

L a n c a s t e r C o u n t y ’s annual 9/11 Memorial Stair Climb will be held on Sunday, Sept. 13, at Penn Medicine Park, 650 N. Prince St., Lancaster.

Registration will begin at 8 a.m., followed by the stair climb at 9 a.m.

T his year mark s the 25th anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks and the fall of the World Trade Center towers. Once the memorial service begins, participants will begin a procession up the steps of the ballpark. They will circle it five times, making the distance of the climb e quivalent to the 110 stories of the World Trade Center. “ We’re just tr ying to carry on the motto that people developed back then to never forget,” said Scott Yuill, a member of the East Petersburg Fire Company.

“The way we can keep the memories there is to have this once a year.”

Pa r t i c i p a n t s w i l l b e required to pay a set cost to sign up. Online registration has closed, but participants can register on the morning of the event.

Every year, many first responders travel to the ballpark to participate in the event, which had 335 climbers last year. Many firefighters elect to wear their full set of equipment for the climb to emulate the way their 343 fallen brothers did to rescue those trapped in the twin towers.

“A lot of them do,” Yuill said. “Some of them don’t, but we also have EMS personnel and police that will climb, and we also have members of the public that will participate.”

In the past, the event

has drawn first responders from all over the county, as well as states like New York, New Jersey, Connecticut and Maryland.

Considering the still rising costs of new equipment, the company has taken steps to budget for new apparatus in the future. The company will set aside a certain amount of money each year to go toward whichever part of its apparatus needs to be replaced next.

“We already know that we have to go into committee in about two years to replace our rescue truck, which is a 2010,” Kennedy said. “We know that we have to replace this every 20 years as far as our aver-

age replacement plan is concerned, so we can plan that accordingly.”

Gap Fire Company has around 40 active members.

For any given emergency response, the company has an average of 17 personnel on the scene, which would be an impressive feat for a company of any size, more so a local company in Lancaster County. “ We a r e v e r y, v e r y blessed to have the local help that we do,” Kennedy said. “We are also extraordinarily blessed that we have local businesses that allow their workers to leave work during the course of the day in the event of an emergency.”

In August, the company hoste d nearby Pe quea Valley Fire Company, Christiana Fire Company and White Horse Fire Company to get a first look at the new truck.

The new truck, like the old truck, has a 100-foot aerial ladder but has 101 feet of new ground ladders, in addition to increased s to ra g e c a p ac i t i e s fo r l i fe - s av i n g e q u i p m e n t and tools. The high-angle rescue equipment has been updated, as well.

The truck replaces the company ’s 2002 E-ONE HP-100, which has faithfully served the company for more than 20 years.

That truck was originally priced at $535,000, showing the drastic increase of fire apparatus cost over the past few decades. The
