Project Activate Is Coming To A Community Near You By Ann Mead Ash
“The Community Foundation is doing incredible work in Lancaster County,” said Shira Zimmerman, director of advocates with The Factory Ministries in Paradise. Through Project Activate, the Lancaster County Community Foundation, best known for orchestrating the Extraordinary Give each fall, is partnering with local organizations in two areas of the county Paradise and southeast Lancaster city to bring about positive change by building a more inclusive community. “Instead of just throwing money (at a problem), the idea is (to ask), ‘What does it look like to get community members involved in brainstorming projects that address the true needs of the community?’” explained Zimmerman, who noted that the Community Foundation has worked with an organization called Raising Places, known for local-level
projects that help to create change in areas where there is both need and readiness to consider an approach that focuses on children. “Raising Places has taken on the challenge of involving community members in several projects across the nation,” noted Zimmerman. “They had a structure (in place), and the Community Foundation is being coached by them.” In each area that has been chosen to take part in Project Activate, the Community Foundation will work with an organization that is already using a human-centered design process. Among the steps are Empathize, which will involve interviews, shadowing, and a nonjudgmental gathering of information. The Define step will include looking at objectives, decisions, and challenges. Ideate involves sharing and prioritizing ideas, and Prototype will use models such as storyboards to illustrate ideas. Testing will focus on

When Mark Schantzer’s son, Desmond, known as “Des,” died by suicide in 2011, Mark and his family,
including wife Debbie and daughter Danielle, were blindsided. “We didn’t see or know any signs,” shared Mark. “We didn’t have money for a funeral. You don’t think about that cost.” In response, the family founded the nonprofit DES Foundation and See Walk For D.E.S. pg 2
Cordell Huyard, director of Cavod Theatre, cannot keep his enthusiasm about the group’s fall show from bubbling over. “‘The Pirates of Penzance’ is such a fun show. It’s hilarious,” gushed Huyard. “Audiences walk away having really enjoyed it (because it’s) such a crowd favorite.” “The Pirates of Penzance” will be staged at Cavod Theatre, 685 W. Main St., New Holland, at 7 p.m. on Fridays, Sept. 20 and 27; at 2 and 7 p.m. on Saturdays, Sept. 21 and 28; and at 4 p.m. on Sundays, Sept. 22 and 29. First produced in 1879, the maritime musical by Gilbert and Sullivan is an energetic work focused on Frederic, played by Nolen Petosky, a young man who, as a child, was mistakenly apprenticed to a pirate rather than a pilot.
