Friendship Community To Hold 5K Run/Walk A Letter From By Ann Mead Ash
As a runner, Becky Link, development associate with Friendship Community, knows how 5Ks have been affected by COVID-19 restrictions. While many organized runs have been converted to virtual events, many participants, Link included, miss running in person.
So, when Link had the chance to offer input for the annual Friendship Community 5K Run/Walk, she liked the idea of offering options. “ We decided to focus on the 5K and have it be both virtual and in-person,” said Link. “Anyone who wants to support us but is feeling hesitant about being in groups of people, we understand
Friendship Community will hold a fundraising 5K with options for a virtual race as well as an in-person race on Sept. 26.

With unemployment in the double digits nationally and with limits on how much socialization can be done in person, starting a blog might seem like an ideal solution. Bloggers can earn an income while interacting with people outside their own households from the safety of their homes. However, there is more to becoming a successful blogger than just opening a WordPress account. It is easy to start a blog, but it can be challenging to keep it going. “I stay motivated because I picked a topic that is just our life. It’s something that I’m very interested in,” said Ephrata resident Kathy McClure, who launched the Frugal Lancaster blog in 2010. “Don’t start a blog on something new to you. Choose something that you’re already doing and interested in.” See Blog pg 2

Spreading A Pandemic Of Love By Ann Mead Ash
Looking back at the abrupt changes he dealt with last March when COVID-19 restrictions temporarily closed the state, Spencer Browne, now a rising senior at The Stone School in Lancaster, was philosophical. “When something as shocking as a pandemic happens, there are many different ways to (react),” noted Spencer. “I think it consumes a lot of people and they are stuck in shock about the world being so different
they can’t do anything … but we saw it as an opportunity to help people who are in that stasis.” Spencer, along with his family, which consists of his parents, Jen and Sean Browne, and his brother, Jayden, home from college in Minnesota, joined forces with volunteers Michelle Simon See Pandemic Of Love pg 4

and appreciate that.” For those runners, the 5K offers a virtual participation opportunity, which includes the same goodie bag, but can be done at home at the runner’s leisure. For runners who want to join others in a 5K, the event will be held on Saturday, Sept. 26, at 8 a.m. at Friendship Community, 1149 E. Oregon Road, Lititz, with check-in and registration prior to the race beginning at 7 a.m. The run/walk race will start at 8 a.m., and awards will be presented at approximately 9 a.m. “(We’re hoping) it won’t be humid in the morning, and it will be great (September) weather,” noted Link. The run will be a professionally timed race on a safe off-road course, which loops through Landis Homes and finishes back at the starting line. Approximately a quarter mile of the course is on grass, a mile is packed fine gravel, and the rest is paved.
