t’s a year of change for the Pequea Valley marching band. Former Pequea Valley marching band director Rob Corrao retired at the end of the 2025-26 school year, opening the door for Jim Ackerman’s second stint in charge of the unit. Ackerman was previously the band’s director for roughly ten years in the late 2000s and most of the 2010s. He’s no stranger to the Pequea Valley music band, serving as a music teacher within the

district. He also works closely with the concert band and the guitar, piano and rock band programs. “I was still in the district,” he said. “I just had other things to do.” This year’s band camp ran from July 27 to 31. Starting at 8 a.m. each day of camp, the 17 musicians and 12 members of the color guard battled the heat and fatigue of the dog days of summer. Camp ran from 8 a.m. through 4 p.m. on Monday through Thursday and from 8 a.m. to noon on Friday. This year, the Pequea Valley unit will perform a show with a 1990s

theme. Ackerman described the show as being songs you would hear on a “NOW That’s What I Call Music!” CD from that era, with tracks like Nirvana’s “Smells Like Teen Spirit” and “Smooth” by Rob Thomas on the setlist. The drill for the show was custom written for Pequea Valley. “I tried to come up with songs that were different subgenres of the ’90s,” Ackerman said. “And ones that were famous at the time.” The decades theme is not a strange one to those who have been following Pequea Valley’s marching See Band Camp pg 4

Phillip Serls was driving down the road at Meadia Heights Golf Club when he noticed a plaque with the inscription “Bob Gingher Highway.” His first thought was to ask himself if Gingher was alive. Gingher, a Meadia Heights member for more than 25 years, was alive and well. Two days later, the pair bumped into each other at the club and played a round of golf together. A friendship ensued; Serls said that even at 60 years of age, Gingher taught him a lot about life. Gingher, who spent his later years at Willow Valley Communities, passed away in February at the age of 86. Serls got an idea. “I stood up like an idiot and said, ‘I think we should start the Bob Gingher Memorial Golf Tournament,’” Serls said. “That was in March, after the funeral. We kicked it around for several months, and finally, in early June, we started to put a committee together.” The inaugural Bob Gingher Memorial Charity Golf Tournament will be held on Monday, Oct. 12, at Meadia Heights Golf Club, 402 Golf Road, Lancaster. Gingher taught within the Pequea Valley School District for 22 years before ser ving in administration for the next 12 years. In 1993, he was named Pennsylvania’s Assistant Principal of the Year. practice range will be open during that time. There will be a shotgun start to the tournament at noon. Welcome remarks will be made just prior; the tournament will be played under a scramble format. Individual golfers are welcome and will be placed into groups of four, with a maximum limit of 100 golfers. The tournament’s registration fee includes the round of golf, use of a cart, snacks and dinner at the end of the day. Registration can be done by emailing slmiller830@gmail.com; any general questions about the tournament should be directed to the same address. Registrations are due by Monday, Sept. 28. Dinner and an awards ceremony will be held at 5 p.m. There will be a cash bar open during that time. Awards for closest to the pin, furthest drive and similar feats will be given. On the registration form, there is also an option for those who want to attend the dinner but do not wish to golf. Sponsorships are available for the tournament, ranging from hole sponsors to the tournament as a whole. In the past, Ackerman’s unit performed shows with 1960s, 1970s and 1980s themes, but he retired before it was time for the 1990s. “We’ll pick up where we left off,” he said. “It just felt like a fun way to do it, just doing things for us little people and the kids that like the songs.” This year, Pequea Valley’s marching band will perform at home football games. Its first show will be the team’s first home game on Friday, Sept. 4, against Thomas A. Edison in nonleague action. The football stadium is located at 4033 E. Newport Road, Kinzers. Each day had a unique theme for band members to match with their outfit. First came “Mermaid Monday,” which called for students to dress like they were going to the beach.

Then, “Twin Tuesday,” where students were instructed to match their friends. “Wacky Wednesday,” “Throw Back Thursday ” and “Freaky Friday” followed. Unlike most high school bands, Pequea Valley does not assign section leaders or have any formal student leadership. “By the third song, we

let them go for a while, and they learned their own way,” Ackerman said. “They learned their bisections for a while. ... It was really self-governed, and they learned that entire third song that way. I felt like that was a turning point in the week, where they just became their band of who they are.”

Members of the Civil Air Patrol (CAP) Jesse Jones Composite Squadron in Lancaster attended Hawk Mountain Ranger School, one of CAP’s longest-running and most challenging national cadet training programs, ending on July 19. This year is the 70th anniversary of Hawk Mountain, located in Kempton. During the weeklong training program, cadets rappelled, practiced land navigation, and learned wilderness survival and search and rescue operations. They learned aircraft search techniques used in downed aircraft missions, including clue detection, evidence search, and terrain-based search patterns. T here was also a visit from a medical helicopter crew, which landed at the training site and showed the cadets how air-medical teams prepare equipment, stabilize injured patients, and coordinate transport during emergency rescues. The day of turned out to be pretty nice.” The walk and amateur cornhole tournament will both start at 9 a.m. Preregistration is required for the cornhole tournament and can be done online by visiting www.cornerstone s u p p o r te r s . o r g / e ve n t / celebrate-life-fest/. Day-of registration will be available for the 5K walk. Registration by Thursday, Sept. 17, guarantees placement in the cornhole tournament, as well as a free T-shirt included in the cost of registration.

The 5K walk will follow the walking path behind New Holland Church of the Nazarene.

As in the prior two years, the 5K walk will be on the walking trail located behind the church. The trail is a mile long; participants will do the loop three times to complete the 5K distance. The walk is open to people of all ages, and prizes will be awarded to the individual walker and group of walkers who collect the most funds from sponsorships. Children who walk the trail will receive a passport booklet they can have stamped at various spots. It was created and is directed by Laura Klein and presented by a cast of Lancaster-based performers. The performance will be held on the piazza of the Hand Mansion, with seating on the lawn. The performance area will open 45 minutes prior to the concert time. In the event of rain, the event will be held under the tent by the barn. Concessions will be available for purchase, with proceeds benefiting Historic Rock Ford. The tickets will be discounted for those who bring their own chair for seating. Denise Wilz will offer a workshop on redware sgraffito on Labor Day, Monday, Sept. 7, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the Langmuir Education Center. The sgraffito technique was used by 18th- and 19th-century Pe n n s y l v a n i a G e r m a n potters to make designs in their folk art pottery. Sgraffito means “to scratch,” and workshop participants will have the option to draw and scratch a design on a 7- or 10-inch redware plate

The self-study process invited the college to examine itself against ex ter nal criteria of excellence and demonstrate its compliance with MSCHE’s “Standards for Accreditation and Requirements of Affiliation (Fourteenth Edition)” and applicable federal regulatory requirements. LBC’s 115-page Self-Study Report was submitted in January, followed by an on-site evaluation visit by commission representatives in March. MSCHE reaffirmed LBC’s accreditation on June 25. In its report, the MSCHE team commended LBC for several achievements, including expanding aca-

demic programs across levels; maintaining strong mission alignment of academic programs, student s u p p o r t s e r v i ce s , a n d admissions practices; aligning strategic planning and resource allocation with institutional priorities; and displaying a strong commitment to continuous improvement through openness to feedback , readiness to learn, and willingness to recognize opportunities for growth. L B C ’s r e a f f i r m a t i o n of accreditation comes during a time of growth and accomplishment, including three years of record fall total enrollment in 2023, 2024, and 2025; the launch of several new academic programs, both on campus and online; the groundbreaking of a new Global Vision Center; and
