Several years ago, Navy veteran Bill Terry wore his Navy cap to a rally in Gettysburg. Someone took note of his service and asked if he went to the monthly veterans breakfast in Gettysburg. “I had never heard of it or been there,” saidNotTerry.long after that conversation, Terry made the hour-and-45-minute trip to Gettysburg to attend a breakfast. “(The veterans) had been meeting 12 to 15 years,” reported Terry. “I thought, ‘We don’t have anything like this in Lancaster.’” Terry decided to start a group locally, so he drove from Gettysburg to the Lyndon Diner in Lancaster. “I told (representatives of the Lyndon Diner) what I wanted to do, and they offered the back room,” said Terry, who noted that at first attendees ordered off the menu. “For the first meeting, 23 showed up,” said Terry, who added that three of those still attend. The Vets Breakfast Club now meets on the third Saturday of each month at the Bird-in-Hand Family Restaurant and Smorgasbord, 2760 Old Philadelphia Pike, Bird-in-Hand. Due to a conflict, the meeting on Saturday, Sept. 17, will be held at Westlake Village, 2001 Harrisburg Pike, Lancaster. The breakfasts are free for veterans and spouses. Attendees begin arriving at 7 a.m. Those who wish to reserve a space at any of the breakfasts may call 717-929-0310. Individuals with questions may call Terry at 717-435-6095. Terry generally says a few words at the breakfast, which opens with the Pledge of Allegiance and a prayer. Presidents of chapters of military organizations, such as the Veterans of Foreign Wars, who attend may get up and speak, and sometimes a speaker is scheduled. When a group of veterans who traveled to Vietnam returned, Terry asked them to share about their experience at the breakfast. According to Terry, most of the attendees are Vietnam War veterans. “We had three or four World War II vets who have passed away,” he noted, adding that some Korean War veterans have attended and that he is starting to see veterans from the conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan. “We had reservations for 72,” he said at the July 16 meeting. “But we get from 90 to 120, so we set up for 90 today.” “We always have the POW table set up and nobody sits there,” said Terry of the traditional table set with a white tablecloth, a single candle, an inverted glass, and a single red rose in a vase. Currently, Terry said, two benefactors are covering breakfast for the veterans, but he noted that sponsorships are welcome.

This year marks the return of the preschool program at Limeville UMC. “They had a preschool many years ago for about 30 years, and it did very well,” said LCP director Mandee Culp. “That ended about 20 years ago, and we are starting it back up. Obviously, a lot has changed in 20 years.” The newly opened preschool will focus on the academic, social, emotional and spiritual needs of preschoolers as they prepare to enter kindergarten. “When it met back then, it was a playgroup, like a Mom’s Day Out,” Culp explained. “They would do a story and some play time and then go home. (Now), we have a really strong academic and social focus at the preschool so it’s a little more engaging and it meets stateThestandards.”students will meet in the church’s fellowship hall and enjoy outdoor activities on the church grounds. “We will (include) Christian concepts such as prayer and Bible stories and have a really strong focus on (teaching the children about) being kind and being a good friend,” said Culp. “We believe that children learn best through play, so we embed learning goals right into their daily play. We are hoping to raise funds for a playground. (In the meantime), we have lots of toys to take outside.”

The Pequea Valley Youth Soccer Association (PVYSA) will present a fall soccer kickoff event and tournament on Saturday, Aug. 27, from 4 to 10 p.m. The first-time event, which will feature food trucks, soccer games, a free used equipment exchange and a cornhole tournament, will take place at Pequea Valley High School, 4033 E. Newport Road,OrganizersKinzers. of the event include Mandee Culp, PVYSA community coordinator, and soccer parent Chris Smondrowski. “We have not tried something like this before. Mandee wanted to do a food truck event to raise (money) for the program, and I said we should play soccer as well to bring more people to it,” said Smondrowski. “Another family decided to put on a cornhole event.” A highlight of the evening will be a 3-versus-3 soccer tournament, where teams of three will play short games with no goalie and no coaching. “It’s smaller fields and less players, so it would be faster games,” Smondrowski explained. “It’s all about the fun and getting out there for the sport of it. We don’t want coaches yelling to the kids from the sides. We want (the kids) to go out and play and have a good time. It’s a game that is supposed to be fun for them, not stressful.” Food trucks that will be on hand will include Auntie Anne’s, A Cup of Joe and Blazing Swine BBQ. The PVYSA concession stand at the stadium will also be open offering candy, iced tea, bottled water and other snacks andThebeverages.cornhole tournament will take place from 4 to 9 p.m. “There are 20 teams registered already,” Smondrowski noted. Middle Octorara Presbyterian Church will once again share and revel in Scottish culture with the Covenanter Scottish Festival and Highland Games on Saturday, Sept. 10, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. The yearly celebration will feature a variety of events and informational offerings centered around Scottish history and culture, as well as Scottish immigrants and their role in American history. The festival will be held at the Middle Octorara Church campus, 1199 Valley Road, Quarryville.
BY ADRIAN ESCHENWALD
Attendees of the festival will have an opportunity to experience games and activities such as the “caber toss”, Scottish dancing and a bagpiping contest, where bagpipers perform before a panel of judges and have a chance to earn medals. The event will also feature a traditional haggis ceremony; information will be provided on the unique dish as it is served with Scotch whiskey. Before the end of the festival, a re-enactment of the Octorara Declaration of 1743 will occur, in which participants portray the day that Covenanters first gathered to deem King George II an unfit and ungodly ruler and take up arms. Each year, multiple descendants of Scottish clans attend the festival and set up stands to hand out information on their background and sell handmade goods. Vendors will offer both Scottish and American cuisine for purchase. The church, which is the known as the oldest Covenanter church in North America, first began hosting the festival nine years ago as a means to raise money for the maintenance and restoration for the historic property. Proceeds benefit the Octorara Covenanter Presbyterian Foundation and various projects such as reworking old, hazardous wiring in the building and restoring the church to its state in 1880.

“The Covenanters were different in that they brought their pastors directly from Scotland and played a huge role in the Revolutionary War,” said former Octorara Covenanter Presbyterian Foundation president Barry Girvin. “They derived their name from the many covenants that were broken by the British to make Presbyterianism the state religion. They came to America fleeing persecution and opposing the monarchy, so it was logical that they would become involved with the revolution.” Girvin curates the school room museum, which is attached to the old church. The museum houses a collection of church materials and artifacts from the early days of the church, as well as a plethora of old documents and photographs from the many one-room schools that used to dot the landscape. Festival attendees will be able to tour the old church and museum, as well as access archived information and research their genealogy.

BY CATHY MOLITORIS As the owner of Creative Inspirationz Gallery in Manheim, Heather Lindsey believes in the power of art. She also believes in collaboration. She’ll bring the two together for the “Interpretation of Time” art showcase. Scheduled to open on Friday, Jan. 6, 2023, the exhibit is currently accepting entries. The showcase is open to any medium of art, and Lindsey said the theme is also open for interpretation. “It’s about, ‘What does time mean to you?’” she stated. “Since it’s happening in January, that’s when people think about time - the new year, the beginning. I think also as we’ve gone through COVID, a lot of people have reevaluated what’s important to them, and that can be reflected in their art.”

The showcase will be held at the Brick House Café, 60 N. Main St., Manheim, which recently underwent renovation and expanded to include an art gallery and tasting room for 2D Distillery on the second floor. Lindsey noted that the art event would not be possible without the support of the Brick House, which will be providing catered hors d’oeuvres for the opening reception, as well as 2D Distillery, which will provide tastings at that event. “The opening reception is bringing together three things people love - art, food and drinks,” Lindsey noted, emphasizing that the showcase is a collaborative effort between the three businesses. The reception will also feature music from a violinist and performances from Balance Dance. Lindsey encourages anyone with a passion for art to enter the showcase. “Art is so subjective, so people can enter anything they want that fits the theme,” she said. “My heart is for the showcase to be geared toward up-and-coming artists who don’t have the resources or contacts for a big gallery opening.” She noted that three pieces to be spotlighted in the window at the Brick House will be selected by herself, Brick House manager Christa Neville and 2D manager Joanie Kretzer. Lindsey’s goal is to offer an art showcase every other month throughout the year in the Brick House gallery space. She’s starting with a soft opening of the concept in September and October. That showcase will feature a sunflower theme. “I just want to support artists and give people access to beautiful art,” Lindsey said. “I want the art showcase to be welcoming to Foreveryone.”moreinformation on entering art in the “Interpretation of Time” showcase, missionspieces.Artistshncinspirationz@gmail.com.emailmayenteruptosixThedeadlineforsub-isSaturday,Oct.1.
