INFORMATIVE FILM
As Awana embarks on its 35th year at Calvary Monument Bible Church (CMBC), 1660 Mine Road, Paradise, Heather Ensslen, who directs Awana with her husband, Michael, asked pastor emeritus Bob Reid for memories of the program’s beginnings at the church. “Awana began at CMBC by faith,” recalled Reid. “We had no program like this in the area. I had heard of … how effective (Awana) was at Moody Church in Chicago.” Reid remembered that a group prayed and trained, and the Lord provided a pastor to be the first commander. “From that time on … God has continued to raise up adult leaders who love the Lord, love children, and are willing to invest in lives for the next generation,” noted Reid. Murungu has learned to make rag dolls, a product that can be marketed heavily near the beginning of the school year in Zimbabwe, where Murungu lives. A loan from a HOPE International group has helped make her business possible. When Jeff Rutt, founder of HOPE International, landed in Zimbabwe with a team of 22 others in January, he was thinking about the difference HOPE International has made by teaching individuals in 15 countries about savings groups and microfinance.
