equea Valley School District and the Factory Ministries have once again partnered up to ensure that kids in the area have everything they need ahead of the new school year.

The two entities will hold their annual Back to School Supply Shop on Wednesday, Aug. 12, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. inside the gym at the Factory, 3293 Lincoln Highway East, Paradise.

The program offers backpacks, notebooks, pencils, folders and a vast array of other supplies to students in need. Families must sign up for a shopping slot in advance; there will be five slots every 15 minutes within the allotted window.

“This is our fifth year running the program,” said Lisa Eckert, director of early learning at Pequea Valley.

It takes a village.

Octorara Area Little League has its village.

The league’s homebase, Lions Park in Christiana, needed a new scoreboard on the main field. The new scoreboard, donated by Houghton Enterprises, was recently installed by a group of nearly a dozen dads on a warm Monday night at the park, 4 Sadsbury Ave., Christiana.

The new scoreboard is nearly twice as large as its predecessor and can be controlled remotely and wirelessly from anywhere around the field.

Previously, wired cables had to be run from the dugouts to control the scoreboard remotely.

Annual Yard Sale Set in Gap

A communitywide yard sale will be held in Gap from 4 to 7 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 14, and from 8 a.m. to noon on Saturday, Aug. 15.

T he s ale w ill b e held on Pequea Avenue; on Newport Avenue; on Bellevue Avenue; at Sunset Village; and at the Gap Fire Hall, 802 Pequea Ave., Gap. Communitywide yard sales, or ga n i z e d by J i m S h a f fe r, were held annually in Gap for roughly 30 years. The effort was brought back last year on a smaller scale.

“It is really just tr ying to revitalize the yard sales in Gap,” local resident Paula Diem said.

“It always ran with Rough and Tumble week, so it used to be a three-day yard sale on Thursday, Friday and Saturday.”

L ast year, the community tried the sale for just two days.

Roughly 20 to 25 homes participated, although Diem would love to see it go back to the 50-plus homes that took part in the sale’s glory days.

Diem said that last year, most of the homes that participated had items that would typically be found at a yard sale, including old toys, books and kitchenware.

“There’s new faces, new families in Gap,” Diem said. “So lots of new things that they can clean out and get rid of.”

Those outside of Gap who would like to participate in the sale are welcome to set up at the Gap Fire Hall, Diem said.

“It is a nice community thing that everybody gets so involved,” she said. “We just really want to get it back out there so that people know that we’re having it.”

The United States was in a postwar economic depression, facing high taxes, severe debt, and widespread farm foreclosures. McDill began to clear the land but, in 1797, sold the whole tract to George Leech, a member of the Leech family who built many taverns in the Gap area. He in turn began parceling the acreage into lots for sale. By 1825, the hamlet boasted 12 houses, with each owner operating an average of two businesses.

In the 1820s, the village (later known as Puddintown, then Jacksonville) ser ved as a local commercial hub within the largely agrarian Salisbury To w n s h i p . B u s i n e s s e s during this decade were primarily artisan-led or water-powered, serving the immediate needs of local farming families before the

major industrial shifts of the mid-19th century. Typical businesses operating in Puddintown and its immediate vicinity during the 1820s included grist and lumber mills; a blacksmith shop; and a general store, with the post office located inside. Limestone burning, for both agricultural and commercial uses, was a recurrent farm sideline.

Bethania School was operated for a year by Reuben Chambers in 1824. Not until 1834, when Pennsylvania mandated public schooling for all children under 15, did education return to the village. Chambers pursued many other businesses, including herbal medicine and pottery, but his printing press was the most prolific.

With his death in 1859, Jacksonville as a commercial center and growing town died with him. Today farming is the principal industry with home commercial businesses on the side.

It’s one of the very few United States capitals, even though it was only for one day. A lot of people forget that around the 1700s, Lancaster was the western frontier. I’d say we’re pretty historic in a lot of ways. I think on the historic landscape of central Pennsylvania, Lancaster more than holds its own. If the passport helps people explore some of the history, we think that’s a good thing for the local economy.

“There are so many great historical stories we wanted to share with locals and visitors,” Cliff continued. “The history and heritage aspect we offer is certainly significant. We’re well-known for the Amish community. History and heritage are often referenced by our visitors as reasons for coming here.

With the country’s 250th birthday, it seemed like the perfect opportunity to highlight that.”

An advocate for tourism, Discover Lancaster was formed from the Pennsyl-

vania Dutch Convention and Business Bureau in 2015. Discover Lancaster, which receives 80 percent of its funding from Lancaster County’s hotel tax, employs 14 full-time staff members and eight parttime travel consultants.

“Tourism represents a sizeable part of our overall economy,” said Cliff. “It helps provide jobs, tax revenues and economic growth.

Locals can enjoy some of these experiences right in their own backyards. There are benefits to having a robust tourism industry.

All in all, the passport is really cool. It’s a great way to spend time.”

We want people to realize there are a lot of different angles to our heritage. The passports have locations throughout the county. They might be places people may not have heard of or explored before.”

This passport to which Cliff is referring isn’t used as identification for foreign travel. Instead, it is a passport to local Lancaster County history.

Discover L ancaster ’s passport is a free commemorative booklet that can be picked up at the organization’s headquarters at 501 Greenfield Road, Lancaster, or any of the 23 local historic sites that are part of the tour celebrating America 250. When passport holders visit the participating Lancaster County locations, they will receive a custom-made collectible stamp that can be pasted into their passport booklets.

The free passports also feature deals and coupons that can be redeemed at the 23 historic locations and at other points of interest around Lancaster County. The promotion is good from now until the end of the year.

“Physically, the passport is made of heavy material,” said Cliff, a resident of Manheim Township. “It’s something that’s going to be a keepsake if someone is inclined. It’s a neat way to commemorate how you celebrated this special year.”

Donations are still being accepted at the Factory for the program. Even if they are not used for this specific event, Eckert noted that families always come looking for supplies throughout the year. Many “extra” supplies are used for the ministry’s Christmas event. Volunteers are also needed to operate the event.

“Anything we have left over, we’ll make sure we give out to families,” she said.

“I think having those opportunities is really helpful for the school,” Eckert said. “We want our kiddos reading; we want them doing enrichment activities over the summer. That way, we don’t get as much of that summer lag or going backwards when we’re starting off the school year.”

program, it was offered concurrently with the summer Lunch and Learn program, which is held every Wednesday at Paradise Park for the majority of the summer.

The switch to being a standalone program was done partially to ensure that it was available to everyone in the community.

“It just got bigger and bigger,” Eckert said. “We wanted to make sure it was offered to anybody in the community versus just the families that were used to coming to the Lunch and Learns.”

Aside from the typical school supplies, brushes, combs, body wash, toothbrushes, deodorant and other hygiene supplies will be offered at the event. Certain items will only be available for students of a certain age, ensuring that every student gets what they need.

T h a t ’s a m o u t h f u l , but it means so much to Octorara alumna and Parkesburg native Mallorie Gurel.

Twirling was in Gurel’s blood. Her mom was a baton twirler, which gave her a natural interest in twirling , dancing and cheerleading when she was growing up. She started twirling when she was 9 years old.

“She introduced it to me when I was 7 or 8,” Gurel said. “Then I would beg her to put me in lessons.”

She eventually connected with Wendy Rhoads at A b - S a l u te Tw i r l i n g i n Ephrata and began formal training, eventually competing in competitions.

Gurel never twirled with Octorara’s marching band, but she was the feature twirler in all her four years at Temple University as part of the school’s Diamond Band.

“I’d say it’s kind of like a mix of dance and gymnastics, kind of like a cheerleader position,” Gurel said.

“You’re trying to engage the audience, and it’s a big way to show school spirit and get people excited for whatever is about to happen.”

Gurel had quite an audience on many occasions.

Temple football plays at Lincoln Financial Field, home to the Philadelphia Eagles.

Along with doing some of the Owls’ basketball games, she also performed with the Diamond Band in the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade in 2025 in New York City.

Her favorite memor y from the trip was performing “Fly Eagles Fly” in Times Square.

“It was super exciting,” she said. “It was the beginning of my junior year, (and) we found out they’d been sending in applications and a bunch of stuff behind the scenes. ... For so many people, that was their dream. People were crying when they told us.”

Launched in 2022, Rise Above was created to help eliminate stigma surrounding youth mental wellness while empowering young people with tools for resilience, self-awareness, and advocacy. The program brings mental wellness programming and youth mentorship to Lancaster County schools for students in grades seven through 12 as well as to young adults ages 18 to 26 in community groups.

The program seeks to create inclusive spaces that foster b elong ing , reduce stigma, and encourage open conversations about mental health. One of its goals is

to reduce long-term risk factors associated with trauma and mental health challenges. Through creative expression and g u i d e d co nv e r s a t i o n s , students may build emotional awareness, develop coping skills, and gain confidence to advocate for themselves and others.

The consistent presence of a caring , supportive adult is a protective factor for many childhood adversities. Supportive adult mentors can protect and buffer children from toxic stress, help children heal and build resiliency, and inspire young people to build strong relationships.

With the new VIP g rant funding , Touchstone Foundation is ex panding R is e A b ove into L ancaster County schools, serving students in grades seven through 12 during the school day and through after-school programming. The expansion also includes new opportunities for young adults through community-based groups, extending support beyond high school.

Training includes Youth Mental Health First Aid, trauma-infor med care, and child abuse prevention and reporting.

The program expansion has also received recognition and support from Pennsylvania leaders and community partners who continue to advocate for youth mental wellness, violence prevention, and mentorship initiatives across the commonwealth.

The JFF Cancer Benefit Sale has namesake Jimmy Faus’ fingerprints all over it. If you focus deeply enough, you can almost feel his enduring spirit in the event’s ambiance.

“I think this fundraiser is another way for a sad mom to keep alive her son’s legacy of being such a caring, giving person,” said Marie Crawford, the organizer of the JFF Cancer Benefit Sale and Jimmy’s mom. “One of his last requests was to donate to people like himself, and this is how I do it.”

“The world is a darker, sadder place without him in it,” continued Crawford.

“He was loved by many, many people. We all miss his beautifully loving , caring soul. His smile was awakening; his laughter was infectious. Many of his friends still carry him with them. When he was with a friend, that is all that mattered at that moment; he gave his undivided attention.”

This year’s edition of the JFF Cancer Benefit Sale will be conducted from 8

a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 8, at the Garden Spot Fire Rescue’s hall at 339 E. Main St., New Holland. The community event is free to attend, and everyone is welcome.

A graduate of Garden Spot High School, Jimmy Faus passed away on April 19, 2012, following a sixmonth fight with colon cancer. He was 27. “ The vibes of the day are amazingly kind, soft, caring , helpful, understanding and fun,” said Crawford. “It’s a special feel that is only explained by ‘hometown vibes.’ Seeing people come together is ver y hear t war ming to watch unfold.”

The JFF Cancer Benefit Sale will feature vendors, craftspeople and small business merchants offering yard sale items, handmade and homemade objects, donated items and themed baskets. The Sierra Club - Lancaster Group PurpleAir Monitor ing Initi ative, which is placing air quality sensors throughout Lancaster County, is seeking volunteers to host additional air-sensing devices that it plans to purchase with a $2,600 Conservation Grant from the Sierra Club’s Pennsylvania Chapter.

PurpleAir is a hyper-local air quality monitoring network that transmits d a t a t h ro u g h a W i - F i connection to a real-time, public access map. While not as robust as government-regulated sensors like the two currently in L ancaster County, PurpleAir’s sensors are considered fairly accurate for particulate matter, and they serve as a supplement to the government-regulated sensors.

Areas in L ancaster County without the Lancaster Group’s PurpleAir sensors include Columbia, Conestoga, Drumore, E a s t Pe te rs b u r g , Ga p , Intercourse, Landisville, Leola, Lititz, Marietta, Millersville, Mount Joy, Pa rad i s e , Q u a r r y v i l l e , Wa s h i n g t o n B o r o u g h , and Willow Street. T he aim of the initiative is to increase the amount of particulate matter data available to the general public, providing a more complete picture of the dangers associated with fine air particles and their effects on the health of local residents.

“It’s important to try and keep people entertained,” she said. “There’s a lot of little technical things that people who understand the sport could know is really cool. ... It’s really understanding what people want to see and what sounds good with the music and stuff like that.”

In the spring, Gurel graduated from Temple with a degree in risk management and insurance. She performed with a fellow business senior, Natalia Redzinik, in the Thanksgiving Day parade. Gurel now works as an underwriting associate at Phil-

adelphia-based Reliance Matrix.

Other local twirlers have found success after growing through the Ab-Salute Twirling system. Pequea Valley alumna Emilie Thibeault competed at the Nations Cup and started a twirling club at Lebanon Valley College; she now coaches at Ab-Salute. Other local grads, like Kyleigh Jarvis of Pequea Valley and Alyssa Sprout of Lampeter-Strasburg, have gone on to twirl at schools like University of North Carolina - Charlotte and Penn State, respectively.

“Wendy seriously is just a sweetheart,” Gurel said. “It was so special; she’s amazing. I feel like they’ve really set me up to achieve all of my dreams.”

Promise Players Post Auditions

Scoreboard from pg 1 “The Houghton family has been what we call our grand slam sponsors,” said Craig Fackler, sponsorship coordinator for the Little League. “The Houghtons have donated everything for the scoreboard. They have kids in the league; they want to see everything elevated.”

Octorara Area Little League rostered about 215 kids last season, ranging from T-ball to the senior division, which goes up to 16 years of age. Many other areas have shifted away from a formal affiliation with Little League International, which has expanded Octorara Area Little League’s borders to include much of the Pequea Valley and Solanco school districts.

T h e n e w s co re b o a rd cost the Houghton family approximately $7,000, Fackler said. Summers & Zim’s donated electrical hardware for the scoreboard, while J&D Smucker Constr uction provided parts for the scoreboard’s base. Dutch-Way Hardware also assisted with parts for the project.

The gameday experience is strong at Lions Park.

Behind home plate sits a two-stor y building that houses a robust concession stand and press box. Three of the four fields at the complex have covered and enclosed dugouts, as well

as a fence. Two of the fields also currently have working scoreboards, while parts from the previous scoreboard on the main field will be repurposed for one of the secondary fields.

Another major recent improvement on the main field was a brand-new sound system, donated by Woerth Motor Company.

The system allows songs to be played during breaks in action and gives the ability to make announcements for the whole complex.

With the sound system, the players at Octorara Area Little League have a unique privilege that is rare at any level of amateur baseball: walk-up songs.

The kids get to choose their own song to be played when they approach the plate; some kids choose classics, while others select songs by contemporar y acts like Imagine Dragons and AJR. “It’s a little bit of everything,” Fackler said.

Fall ball registration is open for all divisions and can be found online at www.octoraralittleleague .org. T-Ball and “Minors” division registration is free, while older divisions carry a nominal cost. The season will open on Saturday, Aug. 22, and run through Halloween.

still carries the traditional, classic vibe of local youth baseball. Sponsorship banners adorn the outfield fences, and local nonplaying kids always seem to find ways to have fun around the park on gamedays.

The park is a strong foundation to carry the organization into the future. Denim Kurtzhals, mayor of Atglen, was one of the volunteers involved with the erection of the scoreboard.

Kurtzhals is also the vice president of Octorara Area Little League and manages the organization’s “Junior” division team.

“I think it really helps (the kids) feel like the community suppor ts them,” said Kurtzhals.

“Baseball players are definitely appreciative of that.”
