Music Event Will Help Fund Adoption

ccording to Matthew Waltman, adopting children was a “staple” with his family of origin. “My sister is adopted from China,” he said. “(We were part of) a community with other families adopting internationally, and there were play groups and get-togethers specifically to celebrate adoption and make (the adoptees) feel special for what made them different,” Matthew shared.

children, there is no insurance that covers part of the cost. To offset the expenses, Matthew and Nicole have organized a night of music featuring food and help from family members. The event will be open to the public.

With that background, it was only natural for Matthew and his wife, Nicole, to opt for adoption with their own family. “I knew that was something I wanted to do for sure,” said Matthew. With Nicole and their 4-year-old daughter on board, the Waltmans decided to pursue private adoption, and they are currently working through that process. Adoption is not an inexpensive endeavor. Unlike with biological

Music at The Homestead will be held at 3700 Holly Drive, Gordonville, on Sunday, Aug. 10, from 5 to 9 p.m. There is an admission charge to enjoy the live music of three acts. Food trucks will be present selling a variety of items. Yard games will be set up for attendees to enjoy, and beverages will be available by donation. A silent auction will be held as well.

“Music is something that I love,” shared Nicole, who has lined up bands of different genres to play at the event. “I have a lot of family members and friends who are musicians.”

Riding for The Haft

Back in 2010, when Drew and Cindy Metcalf began their ministry to children in orphanages in Guatemala, they held a fundraiser called “Walk to Guatemala.” Fast forward to 2021, and the Metcalfs’ ministry moved to The Haft, a 105-acre converted sheep farm in Bradford County where Drew and Cindy help families find restoration and healing from trauma. “When we were in Guatemala, we realized one of the best ways to help children is to help their parents heal,” shared Cindy.

“We provide counseling and ministry services for free as part of our Christian ministry,” added Drew.

To help support the Metcalfs’ work at The Haft, a 100-mile bicycle ride around Lancaster County is being planned for Saturday, Aug. 16, beginning at Petra Church, 565 Airport Road, New Holland. Slower riders may choose to start at 6 a.m., and faster riders may start at 7 a.m. A family and friends ride to Weaverland Anabaptist Faith Community in East Earl and back to Petra will begin at 1 p.m. A color ride for children will

Knowing cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) is kind of like having insurance. You hope you never have to use it, but there’s a peace of mind associated with knowing it’s there if you ever do.

The act of CPR is also one of the highest forms of respect and empathy that one human being can display for another.

“Because the investment of time and energy that it takes

to learn it is very small, everyone should know it,” said Ken Brennan, an emergency medical technician (EMT), a CPR and first aid instructor and the owner of Lancaster CPR.

“Everyone knows someone who’s going to need CPR. I think a lot of people feel if they need 911, they’re going to get help in seconds. But that’s not true. If a patient doesn’t survive

long enough, emergency medical services can’t do their job.”

Located at 1248 W. Main St., Suite L-1, Ephrata, Lancaster CPR offers instruction in the life-changing and life-altering practices of advanced cardiac support, pediatric advanced life support, first aid and CPR. In association with the American Heart Association, Lancaster CPR primarily trains health care professionals, but it also offers instruction to groups, churches, businesses, organizations and individuals.

training for corporations or nonprofits.

Typically, Lancaster CPR’s class sizes range from six to 30 individuals.

“We predominantly provide the training that health care workers need to do their jobs,” said Ken. “They need to be recertified every two years. Obviously, if you work in health care, the odds are much higher that you’re going to use it. Depending on what you do, you’ll probably use it twice in your life. For the general public, I’d say the odds are one in 100 that you’re going to use it. But when you’re dealing with a large group of people, heart attacks are going to be more common.”

Lancaster CPR offers first aid training at its full classroom facility three days a week. The organization also offers on-site

“Let’s say you find someone on the ground,” said Ken. “The first thing you have to do is make sure it’s safe for you. Then you tap the person on the shoulder, and if they don’t respond, you call for help, get someone to call 911 and try to get an AED (automated external defibrillator). You might check their breathing, and you might check their pulse. If you have to, start doing compressions on their chest, and decide if you want to give breaths.”

“It’s easy to learn,” continued Ken. “What it comes down to is doing compressions on the chest. If you’re doing something that resembles compressions, the person’s chances are better than zero. If you’re learning the basics of CPR, it only takes a half hour. But not everyone wants to learn to do this.”

One of the keys to successfully administering CPR is immediacy and a sense of urgency.

“There’s a very short window of opportunity, usually two to three minutes when someone goes

into cardiac arrest,” said Ken. “The more people who know CPR, the more likely we’re going to be able to save lives. It should take less than 20 seconds to determine if CPR is necessary.”

“Among the general public, about one in 500 people have taken a course,” added Ken. “But if someone has been trained in CPR in high school, they don’t really know anything now. That’s why it’s important to update it.”

Ken originally started teaching CPR at Lancaster General Hospital. After he left the hospital, he began offering CPR instruction on his own, before he and his wife, Ashley Brennan, founded Lancaster CPR in 2015.

“There was a lot of demand not being met, and that’s sort of how we got started,” said Ken. “I started doing it myself on the side. The classes were relatively successful, and we just went from there. The business success hasn’t changed because we were in the right place, at the right time, at the right location, under the right circumstances.”

Lancaster’s Forgotten Major League Legacy

In the heart of Lancaster city, land at the junction of Juliette and Frances avenues hides a secret, and it’s one that local resident Jeremy Raff is determined to bring back into the light. Nearly a century ago, the site housed Rossmere Base Ball Park, where some of baseball’s greatest talents played, but their stories have long gone untold.

In the 1920s, Rossmere hosted the Harrisburg Giants, an Eastern Colored

League team led by center fielder and player-manager Oscar Charleston, whom historians rank among the greatest baseball players of all time.

Alongside him were teammates like Rap Dixon, a talented outfielder and all-around powerhouse, and Clarence “Fats” Jenkins, a dynamic leadoff hitter who later starred in basketball and earned a spot in the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame.

be held on the Petra campus at 2 p.m. There is a cost to take part in the ride. Riders who intend to do the 100-mile route and register by Friday, Aug. 1, will receive a free T-shirts. T-shirts will be available for purchase on the day of the ride. A discount will be offered to riders signing up in groups of five or more. To register for the ride, readers may visit www .bike4charity.com.

According to Drew and Cindy, this new fundraiser is loosely based on a ride that was once held from Lancaster to The Haft.

“That was over 100 miles,” noted Cindy.

“It was out of reach for most people,” stated Drew. “There were mountains.”

To make the fundraiser accessible to more people, the ride was moved to the greater New Holland area.

“We want it to be for all Lancaster County to want to ride the loop around Lancaster,” stated Drew, who added that the variety of rides being offered is

meant to open the event to more people. Organizers hope to have all the riders back at Petra for the color ride. “So everyone can ride through the color stations,” explained Drew. Those taking part in the color ride are encouraged to wear white T-shirts to the event.

“It’s like a color (5K), but for bikers,” said Drew.

According to Drew, The Haft is busy. “It’s full,” he stated. “We have individuals and families coming, and people come for rest, retreat, and restoration.” In addition to counseling, The Haft offers an opportunity to take part in equine therapy, as well as spending time with a number of other therapy animals, including goats, chickens, and guinea hens. The grounds feature a 10-acre pond for kayaks, canoes, and fishing, as well as trails for hiking.

“We have a prayer trail,” said Cindy, who noted that Daniel Kolb, a member of the wood shop at Garden Spot Village, has created signs with Bible verses on

MCCL Plans Auditions

The Mennonite Children’s Choir of Lancaster (MCCL) invites children and youths entering second through 12th grades to join its choral community.

MCCL provides choral education for students in kindergarten through 12th grade, with both auditioned and non-auditioned options.

Auditions for the 202526 choir year will take place on Thursday, Aug. 7, and interested families can learn more and sign up at www.mennonitechildrens choir.org/join/register/.

MCCL’s performing choirs include Carol Choir for grades two to five,

Concert Choir for grades six to eight, and Chamber Choir for grades nine to 12. These choirs rehearse Tuesday evenings from late August through early May and present concerts in December and in the spring. The middle and high school choirs also travel each June on a choral tour. The choirs are directed by Rosemary Blessing and Sarah Wingard.

In addition to the auditioned choirs, MCCL offers two non-auditioned programs that foster foundational vocal skills. Prelude Music is for children in kindergarten through first

them to station along the trail.

Over the years, Cindy has been known for her music ministry, and she said that music is still part of many evenings at The Haft. “Our son Isaiah has gotten into that, and now I join in with him,” she said. Cindy shared that Isaiah was about 3 years old when the family headed to Guatemala. “I used to do the leading (in the music ministry), but now he is leading,” said Cindy. “We love to worship and play guitars around the fire.”

A new addition this year are two cabins on the lake for rent, which will offer a new income source to help support the work of The Haft. “We are hoping to have people come and stay,” said Cindy, who added that the spot by the lake is great for getting away.

“There isn’t even much cell service here, so put your cellphone away and focus on whatever God is bringing up inside you,” pointed out Drew.

The mission of The Haft is close to both Drew and Cindy’s hearts. “We want to help the whole family be stable and able to raise kids in an environment where they can really flourish,” said Cindy. “So many are in traumatic situations so if we can help the whole family to heal from their own traumas and be a strong family together that is the support system that God designed,” she stated.

Drew noted that those who take part in the fundraiser are helping to make that mission a reality. “We are incredibly thankful for everyone who can come out that day and bring their friends and family,” he said.

grade, and Choristers is open to grades two through eight. These classes meet Tuesday evenings for eight weeks in the fall and spring.

MCCL serves more than 160 children and youths representing over 55 schools, 45 congregations, and 15 denominations. Rooted in the mission of “training children and youth to glorify Jesus Christ through excellent choral singing,” MCCL is a program of Lancaster Mennonite School and welcomes all children and youths in the community.

Ware Center Plans First Friday Events

Millersville University will present a free performance by LUNA Dance Company on We the People First Friday on Aug. 1 at the Ware Center, 42 N. Prince St., Lancaster. The performance will take place at 6:30 p.m. in Steinman Hall. LUNA Dance is a contemporary dance studio with choreography

designed to push boundaries and dancers who radiate both technical brilliance and expressive power. An exhibit in the Regitz Gallery will also be featured from 5 to 8 p.m. A reception will celebrate the opening of “Gateway to the Unknown II” by artist Ron Ettelman. Ettelman’s

art takes found objects and liberates them from their traditional functions, reconfiguring them in a combination of whimsy, concept, and symbol. The exhibit will be on display until Friday, Aug. 29. The events are free and open to the public. No tickets are required.

cousins. Ryan and Alyssa Mayersky will play country music at the event. “(Alyssa is) my sister, and my brotherin-law (is Ryan),” said Nicole. “He is an up-and-coming country musician.” Members of the third band are related to Matthew. “30 East is Matthew’s cousin’s band,” explained Nicole. “They all do gigs on the side.”

Food at the event will be offered for purchase by Nano Burger, The Eggroll Lady, and Joe on the Go Coffee Co. For dessert, Penny’s Ice Cream will be onsite. “Penny’s is a favorite at The Homestead,” shared Nicole.

The silent auction will feature a variety of donated items. “We will have a large

gift basket from the Speckled Hen,” shared Matthew. Other items that will be up for bids will include artwork, pottery, and a professional photography session. Nicole shared that a spa package from Darla’s Hair Care and Spa and a consult and adjustment by a local chiropractor will be auctioned off, as will a massage.

More information about the event may be found at https://tinyurl .com/bp64cv3w. Organizers request that those planning to attend register ahead.

The Waltmans hope to raise $10,000 from the event. They noted that The Homestead is a family-owned business and that family members will be playing the music and family and friends will donate items for the auction. “It’s family, and it’s personal,” explained Nicole. “But I want the community to come out and support us and enjoy an evening of music and for it to be an enjoyable time for everybody.”

CREEKSIDE FOODS

Harrisburg Giants

Though Jackie Robinson broke Major League Baseball’s color barrier in 1947, Lancaster had hosted major league-level Black baseball decades earlier - a fact often forgotten until Major League Baseball officially recognized Negro League statistics as major league records in 2020.

Also largely forgotten was the role Lancaster city played in promoting Negro League games. From 192527, the Giants played 20 exhibitions at Rossmere and several league games with thousands of fans in attendance. The players thrilled crowds with feats like their triple steal in the eighth inning of their first league game at Rossmere on April 26, 1925 - a play involving Jenkins, Dixon and Charleston - but the field was lost when the baseball park was demolished to make way for Lancaster Catholic High School.

That history might have remained buried if not for Raff, a Lancaster native who discovered Charleston’s connection to the city while reading Jeremy Beer’s biography of the Hall of Famer in 2021.

“I grew up in Lancaster, and I’ve played baseball my whole life, and I did not know this connection,” Raff said. “If this had been the Phillies playing here, we’d never stop talking about it.”

What started as a curiosity became a mission. Raff spent two years researching the Harrisburg Giants’ time in Lancaster, partnering with Negro League historian and Lancaster

Catholic graduate Ted Knorr to gather details and raise awareness.

His work culminated in the dedication of a historic marker outside Lancaster Catholic High School in June, celebrating Rossmere’s place in baseball history and marking the 100th anniversary of the first Negro League game.

Descendants of Giants players attended the unveiling, a powerful moment that connected Lancaster’s present with its overlooked past.

“I had a desire to elevate this story,” Raff said. “The more people I talked to about the Negro League players who played here, the more they said, ‘Really? I didn’t know.’ We had major league games here, and that adds a sense of pride. It’s a feather in our cap and another way we are a great, welcoming community. This is something we should celebrate.”

Raff noted that while the field was demolished in 1929, its site is now also commemorated with a plaque on the ground inside Lancaster Catholic High School marking the approximate spot of home plate. The outside plaque is located on Frances Avenue where the firstbase grandstands would have stood.

Raff’s project has also included community partnerships to spread the word creatively.

Spring House Brewing Co. launched “Fence Bustin’,” a commemorative pilsner honoring the Giants, with proceeds benefiting Com -

munity Action Partnership (CAP) of Lancaster County’s Crispus Attucks Community Center, which celebrates African American history. The Lancaster Stormers hosted a Negro Leagues Night in June, donning Giants replica jerseys later auctioned to support CAP.

Meanwhile, LancasterHistory unveiled “Open The Door: Baseball’s Color Line in Central Pennsylvania,” an exhibit curated by Raff highlighting not only the Giants but also stories like that of Keith Kelley, who pitched a no-hitter for the Lancaster Red Roses in his debut in 1951, only to face racist hostility from fans. The exhibit will run through Saturday, Aug. 30, at 230 N. President Ave., Lancaster.

For Raff, who works as the director of data analytics and strategy for the School District of Lancaster, the project has had a ripple effect, sparking conversations about local Black history and inspiring pride in Lancaster’s place in baseball’s story.

“Being able to highlight these stories has given me so much joy,” Raff said, noting that while he plans to take a break before diving into his next passion project, he’s not done yet. “I continue to be fascinated by the history of baseball in Lancaster, and at some point, I’d like to do even more on the subject.”
