Looking For A Few Good Drivers Paradise Meals On Wheels Seeks Volunteers
“My drivers have been phenomenal through (the) COVID-19 (pandemic), and it has not been easy,” said Marie Glass, Paradise point person for Lancaster Meals on Wheels. Glass, who has been involved with the program for more than a decade, said that the lack of contact has been difficult for both drivers and those who receive meals. “People who were accustomed to visiting with clients can’t talk to them and may not even see them to know they’re all right,” she said, adding that the Paradise volunteer coordinators and drivers have not missed a day of deliveries throughout the pandemic. The Paradise Meals on Wheels program is affiliated with Lancaster Meals on Wheels, which makes about 350 meals per day for area recipients. The Paradise organization is located in a room in the Together Community Center (TCC), 3293 Lincoln Highway East, Paradise.
“I have 20 drivers and right now I have no substitutes.” Meals are provided for a nominal fee. Clients receive five ounces of meat, five ounces of starch, and three ounces of vegetable a day, and meals are available for recipients who need to follow a customized diet, including those on low-sodium, diabetic, low vitamin K, vegetarian, and gluten-free diets, as well as soft diets, puree diets, and others. Hot meals may include ham
and pineapple gravy or a shrimp dish, while cold meals may include a turkey and cheddar or other type of sandwich. Salads are sometimes served in lieu of sandwiches. Currently, the Paradise organization could use a few volunteer drivers. Volunteer time to drive totals about three hours a month. Drivers pick up meals at 8:30 a.m. at TCC and deliver on one of two routes from 9 to 10:30 a.m. “I have 20 drivers and right now I have no substitutes,” noted Glass. Since the Paradise delivery area extends to Lampeter, Glass noted it would be nice to have a driver from that area. The delivery range could include Georgetown, Kinzers, White Horse, the area west to the intersection of routes 896 and 30, and the region north beyond the village of Intercourse. The program allows many senior residents as well as others recovering from illnesses to remain in their own homes. Those wishing to help or to observe a route may call 717-940-4640.

Risa Paskoff, executive director of Aaron’s Acres, is “beyond excited” to be taking Aaron’s Acres campers back to Greystone Manor Therapeutic Riding Center (GMTRC) this summer, and staff at GMTRC are happy to be welcoming groups back to the barn at 1063 Hartman Station Road, Lancaster. Aaron’s Acres provides socialization and recreation for children and young adults ages 5 to 21 with special needs. GMTRC
works to enhance the lives of individuals with special needs through equine-assisted activities. Paskoff was quick to point out several of the benefits the horseback riding experience offers to campers, including increased selfesteem and confidence, improved flexibility, improved balance and strength, improved coordination, and the sense of independence, even with support staff walking along next to the camper. ODC Introduces Grounds For Success
Meals provided by the Lancaster program are delivered to TCC each Monday through Friday. One hot meal and one cold meal are included each weekday for each of about 25 clients. Two drivers pick up the meals on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays, and one driver handles the lighter Tuesday and Thursday routes.

Debbie Saylor, curator for the Blue Rock Heritage Center, believes that she and Blue Rock president Charlie Douts bring together the expertise needed to preserve Washington Boro area history. “My specialty is Native American (cultures), but Charlie knows local history, so it’s a good partnership,” she said. The Heritage Center, located at 2251 River Road, Washington Boro, is open for special occasions, including Sundays, Aug. 22, Sept. 19, and Oct. 17, from 1 to 4 p.m. Admission is free, but donations are appreciated. More information about upcoming activities may be found at www.bluerockheritage.org. According to Douts, the organization was founded after the location was purchased by the Lancaster Area Sewer Authority in 2002. “A group felt we had lost so much history,” said Douts, who added that the borough was the smallest in

Lancaster County prior to becoming part of Manor Township in 1971. The group recognized the unique Native American history of the area and brought in Saylor from Baltimore to bring new life to the historical displays at the center. Saylor, who is curator of the Indian Steps Museum in Airville and vice president of the Lower Susquehanna Archaeology Society Chapter 28, said she saw a real potential gem in the Blue Rock Heritage Center. “Washington Boro is very rich in archaeological history,” she noted. The current exhibit at Blue Rock Heritage Center, “Footprints Through Time,” takes visitors from the PaleoIndian Period to the present. “When you walk in, you understand the timeline, which is PaleoIndian the first 16,000 years,” she said, explaining that the earliest culture in the area is traced to nomadic people, followed by Shenk’s Ferry people. Among the artifacts on display are stone tools, spear tips, and

Community United Methodist Church, 130 Tennyson Drive, Lancaster, will host a Sundaes and Songs event in its parking lot on Friday, July 16, from 5:30 to 8 p.m. The event will feature a concert performed by the Lampeter-Strasburg Community Band under the direction of Howard Boots. Before Lenny Prange retired from working as a painter, he had a request. “A long time ago, I said to my boss, ‘If you ever get a chance to paint the Gap Town Clock, go after it because I would like to say I painted that,’” recalled Prange. Standing in front of the 65foot tower that houses the 1872 Seth Thomas clock, Prange said Phil Hursh of Hursh Painting Company remembered the request. On June 2, with about a month left to work, Prange spent the day high in the air priming the tower, which is located at the intersection of Route 41 and Bridge Street in Gap. “We have three sides done at this point,” said Prange, who noted that the next day thunderstorms were predicted. “Friday or Monday we will be back,” said Prange. “We will prime the last side, put finish coats on, and then start trimming out.” Prange noted that the paint should continue to look good for about eight to 10 years. Kathy Stern, secretary/treasurer of the Gap Town Clock Association, said that she let Prange choose the colors for the clock tower, which are traditional white with green trim on the window surrounds, the bottom and top of the tower, and the cornice at the bell housing. She said the group had considered maroon trim, but Prange was concerned that would fade too quickly. On April 9, Hursh contacted Stern and told her about the idea to paint the clock tower. “Phil (Hursh) donated all the paint and all the labor,” noted Stern. “We were really blessed with that.” Stern relayed the history of the clock, pointing out that it was originally placed on Penn Monument Hall (now home to the Town Clock Cheese Shoppe), located across Bridge Street from the clock. The brick building was named Penn Monument Hall because William Penn had made a historic visit to the area. “The clock was located (in the building) along historic Newport Pike, which is now Route 41,” explained Stern, who added that freight was hauled along the route from Tidewater Harbor to Newport, Del. Fifteen years after the clock was
placed, the building was taken over by the sheriff. “Concerned townspeople stole the clock, and hid it in a nearby ice house,” said Stern. “In 1892, a 65foot tower was built for the clock.” In 1953, the Gap Town Clock Association was formed when the clock tower appeared to be doomed by the widening of Route 41. “Once again, the citizens of the area banded together and moved the tower 75 feet to its present location,” said Stern. “It’s an interesting story.” Clock Association member John Hilton winds the clock regularly, with association president Glenn Kendig filling in when Hilton is unavailable. “John’s father used to wind it before he passed,” shared Stern. “One of the reasons I wanted to start my own organization was to enable and empower volunteers to be involved in the whole process (of raising and training service dogs),” said Linzey Zoccola, who founded Phoenix Assistance Dogs (PAD) in 2009. Zoccola and assistant director Ashley Bosserman have recently begun working with dogs, volunteer trainers, and clients in the organization’s new Warwick Center offices in Lititz. Many of the dogs that become PAD service dogs are goldadors - a mix of golden retrievers and Labrador retrievers. “We work with community breeders, and we breed as well in our program,” said Zoccola, who had 7-week-old Luxor - named for the Pixar office lamp - and Barley at the center during the interview. “Both Sumatra, the mom, and Easton, the dad, are from our program,” explained Zoccola.

“Puppy raisers need good communication skills,” explained Zoccola. “Almost any lifestyle and activity level is wonderful as long as the individual is eager to learn.” According to Zoccola, the only other qualifications are that someone in the household be able to drive the puppy to the vet and to the center for training and that the raisers have internet access for training purposes, since the puppy raiser manual is online. “We have had wonderful teenage puppy raisers and wonderful retired puppy raisers,” said Zoccola, who noted that active families with small children are welcome as well. Bosserman noted that puppy raisers are required to attend two lessons a month at the Lititz location to work with PAD trainers. She specified that puppy raisers help dogs learn all the skills they need as service dogs beginning with sit and stay, and, when the dog is older, how to open doors and shut off lights. Before COVID-19, Timm was overseeing a business that provided walking tours of ethnic restaurants in the city. “They had to shut (the tours) down due to COVID-19 (restrictions),” recalled Mueller. “They decided to get into coffee roasting, and to partner with area nonprofits,” he added, noting that ODC was among the first nonprofits contacted by Wanderlust. Half a dozen ODC staff members taste-tested three coffee blends provided by Wanderlust. “We chose the one we wanted, and we chose the name,” said Mueller. Grounds for Success became Wanderlust’s ODC signature coffee. “The idea is that we get a blend that is exclusively ours, and we get 20% of the sales from it.” The tagline “It gets the job done.” was added to the name.
According to Mueller, Grounds for Success comes in a 12-ounce size, a five-packet gift size, and the fivepound bag he prefers. The coffee also comes in a variety of grinds. Mueller purchases whole beans because he grinds the beans himself, but choices also include coarse for a French press or cold brew, medium-coarse ground, for pour-over or reusable pods, medium for classic drip coffee, and fine for espresso. Several shipping options are available as well. “We have had (client) family members pick it up at ODC,” said Mueller. He added that the coffee makes a great gift. “It has a really pleasant smooth taste,” he noted. ODC, located at 640 Martha Ave., Lancaster, has been helping individuals with developmental disabilities gain the skills to do productive work for more than 70 years. For a long time, it had been the vision of Mission Church, 651 Lampeter Road, Lancaster, to open a food pantry to the community. At the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, the church shifted staff roles to keep everyone employed, and
after receiving a donation of 12,000 pounds of food, the staff decided to act on the vision of opening Mission Food Pantry. On April 9, 2020, the church officially landed the pantry. At first, the staff members were unsure of how to run a food pantry, so they contacted several food pantries across the country for help.
Mission Food Pantry operated out of the church’s gymnasium for several months. Knowing the food pantry had to be relocated, the staff renovated four unused classrooms in the facility. By August of 2020, Mission Food Pantry moved into its permanent home. “In the beginning, it was eye
opening to see how much need there was in the community,” said Brian Bitler, director of Mission Food Pantry and director of operations and community impact at Mission Church. “We don’t do income verification. If people say they have a need, we want to make the food available to them.” See Mission pg 6

“We cover a lot (of expenses) for our puppy raisers,” she said, pointing out that food, vet costs, and grooming are included. “(Puppy raisers) need to provide treats, toys, dog beds, and lots of love,” she said. PAD has developed a timeline for puppies that matches them with puppy raisers at two months old after they have begun to be housetrained. At 12 months, the dogs undergo an evaluation, and at 14 months, X-rays are taken of hips and elbows, which are then evaluated by orthopedic veterinarians befor the dogs move forward with the program. Because it’s very important to PAD that clients are partnered with dogs that can meet their needs, it can take several rounds of clients meeting puppies before a match is made. “It depends on what the puppy needs to learn to make a final placement,” explained Zoccola,
who noted a smaller female dog with an upbeat personality would not be matched with an individual who has weight-bearing mobility issues. “We would look for individuals who need retrieving and door opening (for that dog),” she said, adding that during meetings PAD representatives and puppy raisers examine dog and client interaction. “We are looking at the individual’s body language when they’re working with the dog,” she noted. “We are watching how the dog is interacting with that individual.” Zoccola added that puppy raisers have input into this process. “We help them to learn what we’re looking for, and together we match that dog with someone with a disability,” she said. Aaron’s Acres from pg 1 In 2020, COVID-19 restrictions limited physical interactions between the two organizations, although GMTRC was able to offer some virtual programming to Aaron’s Acres campers through Zoom calls and social media. Now that the campers can visit the stable in person, they will be able to enjoy riding, grooming, and leading the horses, along with learning about the barn operations and helping keep the stable clean. According to Paskoff, there is
nothing better than seeing a camper get on a horse. “Whether it’s for the first time or for the 10th time … he or she is riding the horse,” said Paskoff. “For many of our campers, it is also unconditional acceptance from the horses (that is so important).” Paskoff added that the GMTRC staff are patient and kind as they help support each child with the goal of a safe, positive experience. GMTRC program director Stephanie Fleck will be working

Veritas Academy Begins Renovations Veritas Academy recently began renovations on its building, which the school had officially purchased via public auction on April 27. The more than 47,000-square-foot building is located on a 12-acre property at 26 Hillcrest Ave., Leola, where Veritas had been a tenant since 1999. Built in 1955, the facility originally served as the Leola Elementary School. Most recently, the building was home to the offices of Upper Leacock Township, which owned the building and leased space to Veritas, Steps to Success Daycare and the Leola Branch of the Lancaster Public Library. When the Lancaster Public Library System closed the Leola branch and Steps to Success decided to move to a different location, the only two remaining occupants this year were Veritas and the township. In recent years, Veritas had begun to outgrow its allotted space in their building, with a consistently growing student population. Now that Veritas has full ownership of the property, the school can both plan for expansion and better use the space in the current structure. The school’s immediate plans for the building include overhauling the HVAC system and replacing parts of the roof, both of which date back to the building’s beginnings. In the future, the school plans to enlarge the gymnasium, add classrooms, and expand spaces to accommodate the school’s growing arts, athletics, electives, and other extracurricular programs. For decades, Veritas has generally operated with one class per grade, but the ultimate goal of the school is to expand to two classes per grade. This school year, enrollment has grown to the point that the school is adding a second kindergarten and first-grade class to accommodate students on its waiting list. “We are so thankful that the Lord has provided us with a home where we can put down our roots and continue to grow,” said Ty Fischer, Veritas head of school. “The generosity of our donors and the faithful prayers of our whole school community helped make this possible, and with the consistent growth in enrollment we’ve seen over the years, it’s great to know we have room to accommodate our expanding programs and student body.”
