Pequea Valley

Turtles, Vultures, and Hawks! Oh My!

On June 10 in the village of Intercourse, more than 70 adults and children gathered in the Perella Schoolhouse at the Intercourse Library to get up close and personal with a few Pennsylvania natives.

Raven Ridge Wildlife Center director Tracie Young, with help from her assistant Molly Snavely, was visiting the library with several Raven Ridge ambassadors. The program, which offered interesting animal facts to the fascinated youngsters was made possible by the Library System of Lancaster County 2025 summer programming dubbed “Color Our World.” Raven Ridge is an organization located in Washington Boro. The nonprofit rehabilitates native animals, especially birds of prey, but also mammals and reptiles.

Before the Together Initiative Network (TIN - an effort that brings together individuals and organizations to serve the Pequea Valley (PV) area in strategic ways) existed, a new school district superintendent and a soft-spoken local pastor met for lunch. Tim Rogers, lead pastor of Grace Point Church, remembers the lunch meeting happening around 2011. Pequea Valley School District (PVSD) superintendent Erik Orndorff remembers that he did not know Rogers well, but he knew that as TIN was forming Rogers was accomplishing good things in the PV area. “I said, ‘We have to get these guys on board,’” Orndorff recalled.

Young opened by introducing a pair of eastern box turtles named Ozzy and Harriet. She pointed out that a turtle seen trying to cross the road may be moved to the other side. “Pick the turtle up and move him in the same direction he is already going,” she instructed, noting that taking the turtle elsewhere to be released is not a good idea because that turtle will spend the rest of its life trying to find its way home. Young added that it is easy to tell a male eastern box turtle from a female because the male will have orange legs, orange under his chin, and red eyes.

Young also brought along Oberyn, a black rat snake who could grow to seven feet in length and will climb trees. She explained that rat snakes got their names because farmers used them to clear barns of mice and rats. “Now that it is warming up, (rat snakes) will lay on asphalt to warm up because they are cold blooded. Give them a chance to get off the driveway,” Young stated.

Broad-winged hawks, such as Raven Ridge ambassador Meret, may be found at the tops of trees, especially alongside highways.

Young explained that the solitary hawk makes a high-pitched peeping sound. A favorite broad-winged hawk food is chipmunk, but they will also eat mice, voles, and crickets. Meret was injured and lost his right eye. “Predators need both eyes, so he is non-releasable,” explained Young, who noted that the hawk’s feathers are designed to blend in with tree bark.

During lunch at what was then Friendly’s in Gap, Rogers asked Orndorff a question that has become legendary. “Tim offered $25,000, and he talked about hours of manpower,” said Orndorff. Ultimately, Rogers asked Orndorff what he would do if Rogers could supply him with the money and/or the manpower. That conversation led to a summer school and food distribution program for students in the PVSD area, but it also sparked more conversations. TIN formed originally as Together 2011 and the next year became Together 2012. Rogers admitted that moving forward with Together 2013 seemed a little silly, so the name Together Initiative Network and moniker TIN was chosen. Part of TIN’s regular activities involved attending the annual AHA Conference. At one conference, the group heard about the work Kevin Palau was doing partnering schools and churches in Portland, Ore.

Each year on July Fourth, we celebrate the signing of the Declaration of Independence of the United States of America. But we must not forget that long years of war followed. Considerable diplomatic effort by Benjamin Franklin and his cortege persuaded many in France to help this cause. Marquis de Lafayette, a wealthy aristocrat, was one of those who came to the aid of the struggling army led by Gen. George Washington.

Gilbert du Motier, Marquis de Lafayette was born in France in 1757. Though of an old aristocratic family, he developed a fascination with the Colonial conflict brewing in America. He explained in a letter to his wife, “The welfare of America is intimately connected with the happiness of all mankind; she will become the respectable and safe asylum of virtue, integrity, tolerance, equality and a peaceful liberty.”

Lafayette Returns

As the United States prepared to celebrate its 50th anniversary, President James Monroe invited Lafayette to return to the United States for a Grand Tour of America in 182425. At every stop on the tour, people greeted the last significant surviving general of the American Revolution with cheers and celebrations. When touring through Lancaster County, the Marquis stayed at Amos Slaymaker’s White Chimneys. He later presented Amos with a carved goldheaded cane.

Lafayette died in Paris on May 20, 1834, and was

buried in Picpus Cemetery with soil from Bunker Hill, site of the first shot fired in the American Revolution in Boston, Mass. Lafayette College in Easton is the only college in America to bear his name. Lafayette’s sword, taken from him when he was captured in Austria in 1792, is one of the most precious artifacts in the Marquis de Lafayette Collections at Lafayette College. It is brought out during commencement and other special ceremonies at the college.

On Aug. 7, 2002, an Act of Congress made Lafayette an honorary citizen of the United States, an honor afforded to only eight individuals.

In 1777, he sailed across the Atlantic to aid that cause for freedom. Shortly after arriving, he became a member of George Washington’s staff. Because of his “bravery and military ardour” at the battle of Brandywine in Chester County, Congress soon gave the Frenchman command of his own division. Washington and Lafayette were close companions throughout the war.

After the American Revolution, Lafayette returned to France to fight for liberty and equality “for all mankind.” As a statesman, he befriended Native Americans, defended the rights of French Protestants and Jews, backed national revolutions in Europe and South America, spoke out against capital punishment and became an international advocate of the antislavery movement. In 1789, with some input from Thomas Jefferson, Lafayette co-authored the Declaration of the Rights of Man, a preliminary step to a constitution for the Republic of France.

During that field trip, a conversation between Rogers and assistant PVSD superintendent Rich Eby occurred. “Tim asked me, ‘What is the thing that you really can’t accomplish right now that you really want to implement?’ I said, ‘a birth to (age) 5 Literacy Liaison,’” recalled Eby.

That conversation led to Grace Point hiring Katie Beiler, an elementary school teacher who became the first preschool literacy coach in the area around 2017. Beiler visited homes of young children and worked with them and their parents to encourage early reading and the development of kindergarten-readiness skills.

From there, the program grew. “We joined the Community Action Partnership (CAP),” recalled Eby, noting that the program is now called First Ten Early Learning Initiative. In 2018, Lisa Eckert replaced Beiler working with CAP. In 2020, she her position became part of The Factory Ministries as senior director of youth services. Eckert now oversees other employees from offices located in The Factory at 3293 Lincoln Highway East, Paradise. Eckert coordinates a number of programs for area families, including outreaches such as Imagination Library books, monthly Play and Learn activities, and kindergarten transition supports, as well as home visits. Eckert reported that the PVSD kindergarten readiness scores have remained steady at 40 to 45% readiness. She noted that 80 to 85% of all incoming kindergarten learners have attended at least one early learning program in PVSD.

Orndorff pointed out that by third grade children should be reading to learn rather than still learning to read. “My first order of business as superintendent was to make sure we can get younger kids educated,” he stated, adding that by third grade, it is harder to raise the proficiency scores of two-thirds of children. “Let’s get these preschool kids educated,” he stated. “That’s the best thing I can do for our facilitators.” Studies have shown that

Rogers looks forward to seeing what TIN can do to tackle a variety of issues facing the PV community. Rogers is glad to see the goals he had in mind before TIN formed coming to fruition. “I hope TIN is empowering every leader to realize that you can’t do it alone, but we can do it as long as we continue communication,” he said.

when children are reading proficiently by grade three, poverty levels in the area are likely to drop. In the end, funding for the preschool programs came from a number of sources. Eby reported that the United Way and Urban Outfitters provided funding along with Grace Point Church. Title IV and Title I funding was utilized along with a “Ready to Learn” Block Grant and CAP funds for certain types of programming. He also noted that the Pequea Valley Education Foundation and the Rotary Club of Paradise have helped provide books for young students, and that Eckert has secured a number of smaller grants, as well.

While acknowledging progress in the preschool area, Rogers pointed out that TIN was begun with a broader focus. “I felt the money would be available if we had the vision and if we asked the right leaders those questions,” recalled Rogers, who noted that around 2011 he visited Dennis Groff, then Paradise Township supervisor, with a question similar to the ones he posed to PVSD personnel. “(Groff) wanted a new roof for the Girl Scout building in Paradise Park,” said Rogers, who added that Keystone Church was able to help with funding, a number of local

contractors volunteered time, and a local lumber yard donated materials. Later, after the building was updated, the churches held a community block party in the park, and an attendee offered to paint the building. “That solved problem at no cost to the township,” stated Rogers. “This is what TIN was intended to do.”

Looking ahead, Orndorff sees the work of Mike Lewis, workforce advocacy director with The Factory Ministries, and volunteer Mike Sensenig as the next frontier for TIN. “Our vision is to give every kid his or her first (career) choice,” said Orndorff. “We have great kids, and 65% of them go into our workforce. Why aren’t we taking that as seriously as going to college?” Seeing local businesses getting involved in the effort, he added, “The workforce needs to tell us what they need. There are so many trade jobs out there that can’t be filled, and we need kids to be hands-on more.”

As TIN brings together factions of the community that are stakeholders, Orndorff hopes to see change.

“Now those visions are coming together,” said Orndorff, who called the work of PVSD First Choice coordinator Jared Erb “amazing.” “None of this happens without him,” Orndorff stated.

Orndorff looked back to the early conversation at Friendly’s and noted that it has resulted in an expanded perspective among community members. “I think the bigger viewpoint is that together we can go farther. It’s a lesson - alone we can go faster, but together we can go farther.” More information about The Factory may be found at https:// thefactoryministries.com. Information about the PVSD early learning program may be found at https://www.pequea valley.org/early-learning/ early-learning-overview.

Commemoration: The Music of Lafayette’s Farewell Tour” by Christina McSherry on Sunday, July 13, at 2 p.m.

During the Marquis de Lafayette’s Farewell Tour of America from 1824 to 1825, music was an integral part of most celebrations around the country. This lecture will examine the role of music in the celebrations for Lafayette and how it shaped public memory of the tour.

Christina McSherry is the executive director of Historic Rock Ford. She is a graduate of Franklin & Marshall College and completed her doctorate in historical archaeology at the University of Nevada. She is also an adjunct assistant professor of anthropology at Franklin & Marshall College.

This presentation is part of the museum’s Lafayette Lecture Series and will be held on the first floor of the Rock Ford Barn. There is a fee for admission, and tickets may be purchased at www.historicrockford.org/ special-events.

brought to the library was a Barn owl named Khonsu. Young stated that barn owls eat up to 1,000 mice in a season. She pointed out that in Pennsylvania only barn owls and barred owls have brown eyes.

animal, but the world’s fastest animal is the peregrine falcon, known to fly at the speed of 250 miles per hour. Young introduced Phoenix, a falcon who cannot fly because of an eye issue and now lives at Raven Ridge.

“(A falcon’s) favorite food is pigeons,” noted Young, who added that Phoenix eats quail each day at the center. Young stated that falcons have black under their eyes to reduce glare when they are flying in the daytime.

The largest animal to visit the library with Raven Ridge was Barron Von Vulture, a

black vulture who came to the center after being hit by a car. Young stated that vultures are able to eat decaying animals because their stomach acid is stronger than car battery acid. She added that vultures take sunbaths to kill bacteria on their wings.

Young allowed a few questions at the end of the program. One attendee asked how Young became involved in rehabilitating animals. Young explained that in 2010 when the Horizon oil spill occurred, she became interested in helping rescue injured animals. That inter-

est led her to look further into what she needed to do to become licensed to rehabilitate Pennsylvania wildlife and to pursue that calling.

More information about Raven Ridge Wildlife Center may be found by searching for “Raven Ridge Wildlife Center” on Facebook or visiting https://ravenridge wildlifecenter.org.

In July, Critter Connection will visit the library. The presentation, which will feature geckos, a rabbit, and a guinea pig, among other animals, is scheduled for Tuesday, July 15, at 10 a.m. To register, readers may visit https:// intercourselib.org/.

Native Plant Kit Sale Posted

To help nurture more watershed-friendly properties, Penn State Extension will offer Master Watershed Steward Watershed-Friendly Native Plant Kits for sale through Sunday, July 13.

The kits are designed to help individuals incorporate more native plants into their property. The pickup locations will include sites in Lancaster, York, Berks, and Chester counties.

The kits contain plant plugs carefully selected from species grown by Kind Earth Grower using locally collected, open-source pollinated seeds and 50% peat-free

growing media. Plant plugs are smaller than those typically found in nurseries, allowing for easier transportation and planting within existing vegetation. The plugs have healthy root systems that should establish this fall so plants can flourish next growing season.

The kit options are the Sunny Dry Bottoms Kit and the Shady Dry Bottoms Kit for drier-soil areas; the Deer-Resistant Kit; and the Groundcover Kit, which contains low-growing plants that will spread, helping to retain soil moisture and block unwanted seeds from soil contact.

Individuals can help create watershed-friendly properties with native plant kits from Penn State Extension.

REAL ESTATE AUCTION

Single-species kits are also available this year, including native sedges for patches of lawn replacement. All kit options are available in two kit sizes. Bountiful Kits include five species with five individual plants of each species, for a total of 25 plants. Container Kits include five species with one plant of each species, for a total of five plants.

Individuals may choose their kit and select the pickup location most convenient to them. Proceeds will support the Master

Watershed Steward program in providing volunteer-driven education and restoration work in the region.

More information about the plant kit sale is available at https://bit.ly/ NativePlantKits.

Penn State Extension also offers the opportunity to earn the Master Watershed Steward watershed-friendly certification in collaboration with Nurture Nature Center. Native plants are woven throughout the certification criteria.
