In 2024, Kat Prickett of Perfect Harmony planned the first “Celebrate America!” concert on the lawn at Paradise Station. The free concert featured the New Holland Band playing a number of patriotic tunes, the vocal trio of Perfect Harmony, and fireworks in a special Independence Day event. This year, the event will be bigger than before. “We are doing more than last year,” said Fred Hughes, director of the New Holland Band.
“Celebrate America!” will be held at The Barn at Paradise Station, 312 Paradise Lane, Ronks, on Thursday, July 3. Food Truck Alley, featuring vendors and activities, will open at 4 p.m.,

Mervin Beiler is always quick to greet visitors at Sunny Sunbeam located in Bart Township, a workshop that serves members of the Plain community with special needs. Sunny Sunbeam is one of several workshops found throughout Lancaster County. This year, Beiler’s friend Elmer Smucker joined Beiler in saying hello. The workshops, which provide socialization for adults with special needs and welcome respite for
and the concert will begin at 7:30 p.m., with fireworks scheduled for 9:15 p.m. The rain date for the event will be Sunday, July 6.
Food available for purchase at this year’s event will be provided by vendors including Joe on the Go Coffee Co., Penny’s Ice Cream, Old Road Pretzels, PA Boys BBQ, and Casey Jones’ Restaurant, with The Barn Bistro open for those wishing to purchase wine, beer, and specialty drinks.
Perfect Harmony, which features Prickett, Ric Zimmerman, and Kathryn Williams, will perform, along with the 24-member Celebrate America Chorus. According to Hughes, new songs this year will include “For Good” and “Defying Gravity” from “Wicked,” along with patriotic favorites such as
“The Battle Hymn of the Republic” and a medley of Irving Berlin tunes. Katrina King, accompanist for Perfect Harmony, will be featured on piano playing Billy Joel’s “Root Beer Rag.” “It will be a varied program,” noted Hughes, who added that the “1812 Overture” will be special this year with the choir singing the opening verse prior to the start of the aerial show provided by Schaefer Fireworks. A local radio station will be on-site, as will the Strasburg-Heisler Library, Southern Lancaster County Chamber of Commerce, and more area sponsors. Face painting will be provided by Paradise Station. There is a cost to park for the event, with limited parking at The Barn and overflow parking

A few years ago, Lighthouse Vocational Services was looking to enhance the educational services it offers to its clients. “Our previous quality assurance director wanted something more (for clients),” recalled Lighthouse program specialist Jen Swanson. The director had heard of the project-based learning programs being implemented for students being served by the Lancaster-Lebanon IU13.
Enter Lori Blantz, instructional technology specialist with the IU.
“I assist all our educators from preschool through age 21 with
STEM and technology, computers, and communication devices,” explained Blantz, who then simplified her role by adding, “In this situation, STEM is out-of-thebox learning.” Blantz set about creating life-enrichment units for Lighthouse working with fellow IU staff members Jen Bennett, Ketrina Walter, and Giovanna Chamberlain. In July of 2024, the IU staff members began working with Lighthouse staff members, including Swanson and program specialist Kaitlyn Deemer. “We did several training sessions with Lighthouse, and we planned (monthly) programs
through March (of 2025),” said Blantz.
Blantz admitted there were some differences between her usual work and lesson requirements for Lighthouse, an organization that exists to promote growth opportunity and hope for persons with disabilities based on Christian values and principles. “It was a challenge to work with
a population that I haven’t worked with,” said Blantz, who added that researching how to teach daily devotions for students is not usually part of her job.
Swanson stated that since Lighthouse personnel are not required to have educational certifications, some staff members were apprehensive about the training. Blantz said that initial training sessions focused on the monthly lessons the IU staff had devised, which ran from October 2024 through
March of this year. “We created six lessons,” said Blantz, who listed lesson topics as civics, nutrition, religions around the world, diversity, life cycles, and disability awareness. Blantz said the IU staff taught the first two lessons - focusing on the presidential election for civics and Thanksgiving foods for nutrition. “We worked with (Lighthouse staff members) to show them how to use the lessons,” said Blantz. Each unit teaches about the theme in a
number of academic subjects including art, social studies, language arts, Bible, and American Sign Language. According to Blantz, for the civics unit, clients took part in hands-on activities such as making ballots and voting boxes in art. “For our October unit on civics, for religion lessons, we talked about ... what God has provided to us and being good citizens to help others,” said Blantz, who added that clients measured, cut, and created blankets that

The Giant Company, in partnership with Keep Pennsylvania Beautiful, recently announced the return of the Healing the Planet Grant Program.
The grant program, funded by the Giant Company, known locally as Giant and Martin’s, aims to invest in tree plantings across the company’s operating areas in Pennsylvania. A total of $112,000 in funding will be awarded to tax-exempt organizations for tree planting projects this year. Eligible projects must be shovel ready and include tree planting and direct costs relating to tree planting.
The 2025 Healing the Planet grant program is accepting online applications for grants of up to $4,000 now through Tuesday, July 1, via the Keep Pennsylvania Beautiful website. Individuals may visit www.keeppabeautiful. org/grants-awards/grants and select “Healing the Planet Grant Program, funded by the Giant Company.”
Eligible expenses include but are not limited to trees
native to Pennsylvania, equipment, tree signage, tools and supplies. Preference will be given to applications that aim to plant the highest number of trees. Awardees will be announced in late July. This is the fifth year that the Giant Company has partnered with Keep Pennsylvania Beautiful to offer Healing the Planet grants. In the past four years, more than $1.2 million has been awarded to 140 recipients for projects which connected people and families to green spaces; improved or helped to protect local waterways and water resources; supported projects that addressed food waste prevention, reduction and recovery; and promoted tree planting initiatives. Keep Pennsylvania Beautiful has supported community improvement initiatives and encouraged community leadership, responsibility and respect for the environment since 1990. Keep Pennsylvania Beautiful, a state affiliate of Keep American Beautiful Inc. has more than 35 years

When training began, Lighthouse staff members were challenged by the change in their job requirements. However, as training continued and Lighthouse staff members began teaching the lessons, they built confidence and realized they could succeed at teaching. Swanson noted that staff members were asked which subjects they were comfortable teaching.
“(Lighthouse) staff members worked with their own
strengths and (learning interests),” commented Blantz.
“Now they are doing a great job (teaching),” stated Swanson.
Mark Slider, who recently became director of development and marketing with Lighthouse, is a veteran educator. He has observed Deemer teaching Lighthouse clients, and he is impressed with her abilities. “It’s exceptional,” said Slider, noting that Deemer begins lessons with a social and emotional check-in. “When she teaches,

the lesson, (clients) are engaged,” said Slider. “It all starts with the relationship.”
In April, Lighthouse staff took over creating the lessons, focusing on Earth Day for April and Lancaster County in May. The June unit focused on rainforests, and July’s theme will be oceans. Swanson pointed out that Lighthouse clients have benefited from the hands-on approach. “With project-based learning, we are finding that retention is (improved),” she stated. “They (not only) remember what they did three days ago, they remember what they did last month.”
Blantz noted that the immersive nature of the lessons is key. “Clients planted in a raised garden to learn about the cycle of life,” she pointed out. Swanson noted that the project-based lessons offer more manipulatives and face-to-face learning as opposed to showing clients videos.
According to Slider, not only does the program enhance Lighthouse offerings, but it is part of a goal to change stereotypes surrounding clients. “This is adult education,” he stated. “Our participants have the continuation of lifelong learning that empowers people to have life and a career and hope and an opportunity to be part of something bigger than themselves.” Pointing out that Lighthouse is celebrating its 50th anniversary this year, he stated, “Our theme is ‘Created to Shine.’ We believe Almighty God created our people with special abilities … to be so much more than our society defines them as.”

at the Toy Train Museum. Handicapped-accessible parking is available at The Barn lot. Additional parking this year will be available for a per-car fee at the Strasburg Rail Road, with shuttle service provided to The Barn by Strasburg trains. Train service will begin at 4:15 p.m., with trains departing every 30 minutes until the lot is full.
The Barn at Paradise Station owner and general manager Tyler Prickett said that working together with neighbors on the event is a historical first. “One of the greatest things about this celebration is the collaboration between neighbors and the community,” he stated.
“This year, Paradise Station will be partnering with the Strasburg Rail Road … a feature that has never been offered in the property’s 55-year history!”
Since 2016, the Prickett family has owned the nineacre property where The Barn at Paradise Station is located. The venue now offers the fully restored barn, along with a number of train cars, including 38 cabooses, a baggage car, and a mail car. Opportunities to donate to help defray costs of the event will be available. Readers who would like more information may visit www .ParadiseStation.us or call 717-687-5000, ext. 117.

The grant was the first for Foxwynd’s environmental focus and mission to support initiatives that foster community well-being and resilience. The K10 is coordinated by the Chesapeake Bay Foundation. This year, the 19th annual Special Needs Benefit Auction will be held on Monday, July 7, at Fisher’s Quality Dairy Sales, 3304 B Old Philadelphia Pike, Ronks. The auction will begin at 10 a.m., but breakfast food items will be offered for purchase at starting at 5:30 a.m., with drive-through service available.
Sunny Sunbeam attendees visit the center on Mondays and Wednesdays over the summer and on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays during the other seasons.
Participants arrive at 9 a.m., and the day begins with devotions, which includes reading a chapter from the Bible, praying, and singing.
Caregiver Sarah Fisher noted that lessons - arithmetic, reading, spelling, and English - are part of each morning session.
Lunch is at 11:30 a.m. Some days participants bring their own lunches, and some days the meal is prepared at the center. Beiler reported that the lunch on June 11, which happened to be eaten outdoors, featured potatoes, meatballs, peas, and salad. Apple crisp was served for dessert.
After lunch, there is a story time, followed by projects to be worked on. Fisher said that the group still packages poly clothespins and makes keychains with beads. Male members of the group mow the grass. On June 11, boxes of snap peas awaited the group of 15 in the cool of the workshop. Another new project involves packing paper tablets. Beiler explained that packaging the tablets involves cutting, adding stickers and magnets, and then putting the tablets in bags.
Together, Sunny Sunbeam and the other centers - Sunbeam, Special Hearts Circle, Caring Hearts, New Horizons, Upper Valley Workshop, Shady Hollow, and Sunnyside Specials - give the more than 100 adults who attend a chance to socialize and do productive work.
Beiler noted that two of the Sunny Sunbeam attendees come from Maryland.
Highlights of this year’s auction will include carriages, swing sets, and sheds. A 26-by-28-foot garage, built on the highest bidder’s site, will go up for auction. The building will have a concrete floor, two garage doors, and an attic with stairs. Other items will include grills, scooters, wagons, tools, and outdoor furniture. Quilts made at Caring Hearts are scheduled to be sold at 4 p.m.
Beiler said that he enjoys helping out at the auction.
“I’m looking forward to it,” he stated. Fisher noted that Beiler will hold up items that are being auctioned and then take them to the winning bidder.
Food that will be available for purchase at the auction will include egg sandwiches, doughnuts, breakfast logs, and coffee. Among the lunch items will be cheesesteak sandwiches,
barbecued chicken and ribs, sub sandwiches, ham and cheese sandwiches, fried shrimp, salad, fruit cups, french fries, blooming onions, and soft pretzels. The list of beverages offered will include smoothies and iced coffee. Ice cream, fry pies, and baked goods will
be on the dessert menu. Food may be eaten on-site or taken out. Those who would like to donate items to the sale may call 717-687-5152 and 717-768-7417. On the day of the sale, individuals with questions may call 717-455-3987.
