When Roman Thomas was a child, his father, Kurt, was among the first organizers of the Intercourse Heritage Days event. “We had a food stand,” recalled Roman, who recently became a member of the Heritage Days committee. “I remember the food tent at the old park,” he said. “It rained, and there was like a river running down (through the event).”
Roman’s memories actually date back to the Village of Intercourse anniversary celebration held in 2004. “In 2004, we had the 250th anniversary, and we dedicated the (new) Intercourse Community Park,” recalled fellow committee member Mike Sensenig. “We decided to keep doing it, so the first Heritage Days was held in 2005.
It’s (been) 20 years.” The 2025 Heritage Days celebration will be held in the Intercourse Community Park, 3730 Old Philadelphia
Pike, Gordonville, beginning on Friday, June 20, with the opening of the food showcase at 5 p.m. The event will continue on Saturday,
June 21, when the Intercourse Fire Company pancake and sausage breakfast for purchase starts the day at 6:30 a.m.
Both Roman and Sensenig are excited for the return of the fireworks display, which will close the event, on June 21 beginning at

In order to raise funds for its mission trip to Alaska this summer, members of the youth group at Pequea Baptist Church will present a fundraiser on Saturday, June 14, from 9 a.m. to noon, which will feature a yard sale, a sale of baked goods and a car wash. The youth group, called SCOPE (Serving Christ on Planet Earth), has dubbed the activity “A Super-Colossal Fundraising Event.”
According to youth group leader Tammy Shondelmyer, the youth group held a bake sale and car wash last year to fund its previous mission trip, but this year a yard sale has been added.
“We have people who donated antiques and furniture items. We have an antique rocking horse,” she stated. “Many items will be tagged. A lot of the smaller items will be by donation only.” Other items for sale will be household goods and children’s items, including baby playards.
Tractors, bounce houses, and a variety of tasty treats will be part of the annual Heritage Days event in Intercourse Community Park.
Partipants in last year’s event included (from left) race co-directors Pam Haas and Lynn Cronomiz, Freddie Henry and Lynne Bickta.

Cruisin’ in Christiana, a car show that will feature vehicles of all makes and models, will be presented by the Christiana Fire Company on Saturday, June 14, on the grounds of the William P. Brinton House, 17 Green St., Christiana. Registration will open at 9 a.m., and the show will take place from
This year marks the third annual Cruisin’ in Christiana. The first event was held in the fall of 2023, but organizers decided to change the car show to spring to take advantage of more favorable weather conditions.
“Last year, we had almost 90 cars,” said fire company member and event organizer Shawnie Betts. “We had cars, trucks and motorcycles.”
She noted that there were also some unique vehicles featured. “There was a souped-up Amish buggy, a dragster and a train car, and we had some tractors as well,” said Betts. “The fire company had their engine there until they got a call.”
Dash plaques will be awarded to the first 65 entrants. There will also be trophies in various categories, including Best Classic, Modern, Motorcycle and Exotic.
“One of the volunteer fire company members is making the trophies,” noted Betts. “The Best in
Show will be in honor of my (late) dad, Terry Walker.”
Music will be provided by The 45 Guy, who will spin vinyl records. Christiana Fire Company members will offer food for sale, including hot dogs, sausage sandwiches and hot pork sandwiches. Ice cream will be sold by Softie Whirl.
Vehicle owners who register in advance by Friday, June 13, will receive a discount. Registration forms are available at the Christiana Borough office, 10 W. Slokom Ave. A link to register is also available at www.facebook .com/christianafirecompany in a post dated May 25. Same-day registrations will also be accepted.
There will also be an opportunity for visitors to win prizes through a random drawing. Prizes will include two North Face tents, including a four-man tent and a two-man tent; four tickets to a Lancaster Stormers baseball game; and gift cards from local restaurants. The prize drawing will be held at 1:30 p.m. A donation fee will be collected from vehicle owners. Spectators will be admitted free of charge.
All proceeds from the event will benefit the all-volunteer Christiana Fire Company, located at 214 S. Bridge St., Christiana. The fire company serves the communities of Christiana Borough, Atglen Borough and Sadsbury Township. It also provides support to neighboring companies.
More information about the fire company, including volunteer opportunities, is available at the previously mentioned Facebook page and www.christianafire.com. In the event of rain, the car show will be held on Saturday, June 21.

New Holland Fair president Paulene Redding was pleased with the attendance. “The first meeting went great,” she reported. “I was very impressed with the group of kids. They are so outgoing and enthusiastic.”
reporter with Grassland, noted that she has been involved with the New Holland Fair since she was small. “I grew up in New Holland, and I like getting hands-on with the fair,” she said, noting that she works at the stand her church youth group has at the fair.
Junior Board member Kaeden Good, who attends Reach Cyber Charter School,
has been volunteering to help with the New Holland Fair tug-of-war competition for four years. “Kaeden works the buzzer,” explained Redding, who noted that Kaeden’s father, Rodney Good, judges the competition. Kaeden said he would like to see more area youths helping out at the fair and bringing new ideas to the table.
Junior Board member Isabella Jones is a student in the Conestoga Valley School District who first heard about the New Holland Fair through the organization’s fair queen competition. After competing in the contest, she wanted to be more involved in the fair. Other initial members include

A few of the members of the board have credentials in the area of agriculture or have volunteered previously with the fair.

dusk. “We are very excited about the fireworks,” pointed out Sensenig. “I think that will be a great show.”
According to Sensenig, the food showcase has always been an important part of the event. “The vision from the beginning was local restaurants providing real food,” he noted.
“It’s a sampling of Lancaster County (flavors),” said Roman, who has lined up a number of local restaurants to present their specialties for purchase at the event. “Stoltzfus Meats has been there from the beginning,” Roman noted, adding that the food maker is known for tasty sausage sandwiches. The village’s own Immergut Soft Pretzels will have a stand, as will the Village Café, which will sell cheesesteaks and fries. In addition to a hearty breakfast, the Intercourse Fire Company will make barbecue brisket to sell at the event. For this year’s mission trip, 14 youth group members and four adults will work with the church’s missionaries, Tim and Larissa Zook and Jason and Jonie Mellinger from Helping Hands Alaska (HHA). HHA, founded by Jason and Jonie, provides services to village pastors and missionaries serving in
SPEAKER:
the remote Alaskan bush.
“We are going to support our church missionaries that live and work there,” Shondelmyer explained. “We will be doing work projects, painting, cleaning up a storage facility and helping build a new one.”
Among the many services that HHA provides are arranging charter flights and airport pickups and transporting people and supplies throughout the state via bus, van, truck or airplane. “It is a very remote area,” explained Shondelmyer. “There is a man who flies airplanes and takes food to remote places. He is a jack of all trades. When the lakes freeze, he (travels by truck over) frozen ice roads, which are roads they make upon huge lakes. He takes needed supplies like gas and oil.” More information about the organization is available at www.helping handsalaska.com.
A previous mission trip took the youth group to Nashville. Working with two local churches, they ministered to the homeless, including serving sandwiches. “Every year we go some place; this is new to us. We try to find places that are (in need) in the United States,”
Shondelmyer said. “We went to Nashville right after COVID because the homeless population exponentially grew after (the pandemic). Many could not find their way in the music world. They had huge underground cities of homeless people.”
The youths are asked to raise their own money to participate in the mission trips. “Some teens (recently) mulched to earn some money, and another group of kids helped a church family put river rock around their pool,” she noted. “I see great value in kids in earning their own money because they invest in (the mission trip). They want to go and make a difference.”
SCOPE comprises youths ages 12 to 18. Most reside within the Octorara Area School District, but other members are from Pequea Valley School District and other communities like Coatesville and Downing -
town. “We have 42 on the roster, and at least half of those kids are not (from Pequea Baptist Church),” noted Shondelmyer. “They are kids that have been invited because their church does not have a youth group, or they don’t go to church.”
SCOPE meets on Wednesdays at 7 p.m. during the school year. This summer, the youth group will meet on Wednesdays at 6:30 a.m. from June 11 through July 9. “They are meeting this summer on Wednesday at 6:30 a.m. for breakfast and a Bible study before they start their jobs,” she noted. The youth group will resume its regular meetings on Sept. 10.
Pequea Baptist Church is located at 6062 Old Philadelphia Pike, Gap. To learn more about church activities, visit www.fbcpequea .org or www.facebook.com /FirstBaptistChurchOf Pequea or call the church office at 717-442-4403.

Retirement Community, 2499 Zerbe Road, Narvon, on Saturday, June 14.
Registration will open at 8 a.m., and the 5K and walk will begin at 9:30 a.m. Participants and attendees are encouraged to wear purple to the event.
This is the third year for the fundraiser. Paint the Town Purple began in 2023 at Historic Joanna Furnace. This is the second year it is being held at the retirement community.
“We’re hoping to grow it this year. We are trying to attract runners from the
Lancaster area (as well),” Cronomiz noted, adding, “The past two years we had beautiful weather. The 5K is professionally timed, and we accurately measured the course to be a 5K.”
Nonrunners and walkers are also invited to attend to cheer on the 5K participants, but it is requested that they arrive by 9:15 am. due to a road closure.
“The run goes out of Zerbe Mansion and down the hill on Zerbe Road and turns right onto Hammertown Road. The Caernarvon Township police will have
half of the road secured and the other half (open) to let out runners,” Cronomiz explained. “Then, they run up the hill about a half mile to the top of Zerbe Road and turn left. They will go along School House Lane, which is on the campus.” She noted that the walkers will stay on the campus on School House Lane.
Retirement community residents are also involved in efforts to support the Alzheimer’s Association.
“They did a bingo on May 19, and they raised $310,” she said. “The residents will also do a bake sale at the race.”
There will also be an opportunity for attendees to win gift baskets through a random drawing. 5K participants will get five tickets, but the public may purchase tickets to win prizes, such as Wawa and Olive Garden gift cards. Runners and walkers will receive goodie bags and will
be provided with bottled water.
Cronomiz said it is important to raise funds for the Alzheimer’s Association, which helps patients and family members deal with the challenges of the disease. Thanks to the organization, she also reconnected with her friend Pam Haas through an Alzheimer’s Association support group. Haas, who lost her husband to the disease, is co-director of the race.
Cronomiz noted that the Alzheimer’s Association has made great strides in helping people with the disease. For example, new blood tests are now being used to measure amyloid
LANDSCAPE DESIGNING
levels in the blood. Alzheimer’s disease is characterized by the buildup of amyloid plaques in the brain.
“This (blood test) from a general practitioner helps diagnose people sooner, and they can go to a neurologist and start treatments early,” she said. “That is when they are most affected - at the beginning stages with mild cognitive impairment. What has happened in the last 25 years has been dramatic in getting treatment.”
Cronomiz is also a volunteer and advocate with the Alzheimer’s Association, which seeks to provide increased research dollars and support for caregivers.
“I was a business analyst, and I now put all that energy into finding a cure because (my mother’s) death affected me too much,” Cronomiz shared.
“I am involved in the advocacy portion where we go to the legislators and ask for more funding.”
“It is my ardent wish that we can finally know the first survivor of Alzheimer’s disease during my lifetime,” she added.
The local race is being held as part the Longest Day initiative. Each year on the summer solstice, the day with the most light, thousands of advocates across the world participate in the Longest Day to “fight the darkness of Alzheimer’s” through an activity of their choice. The Longest Day coincides with Alzheimer’s & Brain Awareness Month in June.
To register for the upcoming event or for more information, visit www .pretzelcitysports.com, go to “Race Calendar” and search for “Paint the Town Purple 5K and 1K Fun Run.” More information about the event is also available on Facebook by searching for the “Paint the Town Purple 5K Run” event page. Make-A-Wish Mother’s Day Truck Convoy Held
On May 10, the MakeA-Wish Mother’s Day Truck Convoy returned to Manheim Pennsylvania Auto Auction, its home since 2020, for the 36th annual celebration. It was a record-breaking day, with a total of 426 trucks participating in this year’s convoy, the highest number since the event moved to Manheim.
The event, which raises funds to grant life-changing wishes for local children battling critical illnesses, drew thousands
of attendees who enjoyed a day of family-friendly fun. The highlight of the day was the sendoff of the convoy, as wish kids rode along the 26-mile route, waving to supporters who lined the streets to cheer them on.
During the main stage program, Make-A-Wish honored this year’s Wish Kid Ambassadors; thanked the drivers and sponsors; and welcomed special guest Linda Pauling, the original “Wish Mom.” Linda’s son Christopher’s wish to be
a police officer sparked a movement that eventually grew into the Make-AWish organization. Fundraising for the 36th Annual Mother’s Day Truck Convoy will continue through Sunday, June 15. The $500,000 fundraising goal will help to ensure that every eligible child currently waiting for a wish can experience the hope, strength, and joy that a wish provides. To donate and help grant more wishes, visit https:// wishconvoy.org.

Junior Fair Board
from pg 3
Genevieve Adamow, 2024 New Holland Fair queen, and Brianna Libell.
One project Redding was hoping the Junior Fair Board members would embrace is the Ag Education Station, which will be located near the farm show building at the corner of Roberts Avenue and Franklin Street.
“I let them know about the Ag Education Station and how I want them to take part in that,” stated Redding, who added that the board members had already offered to bring over FFA equipment to use. “They are full of ideas,” shared Redding. “They have the energy, and they are ready to go. I think (the Ag Education Station) is going to be a huge success.” In addition to the station, Redding noted that the Junior Board is setting up an Instagram account and that she plans to delegate the designing of the fair book cover to the group.
Redding pointed out that along with pizza, New Holland HVAC will provide T-shirts for the Junior Board members and cover expenses for them to attend youth day at the Pennsylvania Fairs & Showmen Convention held annually in Hershey.
Redding would like to see the group grow to more than a dozen members. “(The Junior Board members) would like to be paired with older (New Holland Fair) board members so they can see what they are doing,” said Redding.
Junior Board members would also like to see their number increase. “We want to see more high schoolage kids involved,” shared Burton.
The Junior Fair Board’s Instagram may be followed using the handle @nh.jr.fair .board. Readers who would like to donate or volunteer for the fair may visit https:// newhollandfair.org. Readers with specific questions may email info@newhollandfair .org or call 717-354-5880.
