Park To Host NHSP Craft Fair
BY ANN MEAD ASH
As the New Holland Summer Arts Program (NHSAP) returns to the park for 2021, organizers have lined up more than 20 concerts, with six of the musical acts being new to the park venue or returning after many years. Performances will be held three times per week in the New Holland Community Memorial Park, located in the 400 block of Jackson Street in New Holland. Concerts will begin at 7 p.m., with the exception of the Saturday, Aug. 21, concert, which will begin at 6:30 p.m.

Funds to help support NHSAP are raised by the annual arts and crafts show sponsored by the organization. This year’s show will be held in the park on Saturday, June 26, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sue Noll, secretary/treasurer for NHSAP, said organizers have lined up more than 60 vendors for the rain-or-shine event. Among the vendors will be those selling jewelry, hand-carved bowls and rustic home furnishings, handthrown pottery, paper crafts, wall art, on-site caricatures, gourd birdhouses, stained glass, vinyl signs, bags, soaps, lotions, candles, baby teethers, and lawn ornaments. One vendor will demonstrate making pottery, and most of the crafters will donate items to a Chinese auction, which will be held at the event.
A queen-size quilt made and donated by the Garden Spot Village Quilters will be at the show for viewing. The quilt will be given away as a prize at the Fiddler’s Picnic on Monday, Sept. 6. The quilt features 20 hand-appliqued tulip blocks set on point against a background of white and hunter green.
NHSAP craft fair coordinators have arranged for the Crazy Train to sell hot dogs with a variety of toppings and for Lickity Split to sell ice cream on site.
The concert season will begin with the New Holland Concert Band on Sunday, July 4. The concert will be followed by fireworks. The rain date for that event will be Monday, July 5. New acts to perform at the park this summer will include Frank, Patsy, and Friends, a tribute to Frank Sinatra and Patsy Cline on Wednesday, July 21; Party of Five, a rock’n’roll dance band, on Saturday, July 31; the country music of Cody Tyler and Gypsy Convoy on Saturday, Aug. 7; Then Sings My Soul, a gospel tribute to Billy Graham, on Sunday, Aug. 8; and the John Stevens Polka Band on Sunday, Aug. 15. Returning after many years of absence will be the West Chester Swing Kings on Saturday, Aug. 14. In addition, Servant Stage will bring its show “The Old Time Gospel Radio Hour” to the venue on Sunday, July 25.
All shows are free to the public. More information about NHSAP and a full concert schedule are available at www.newhollandsummer arts.com. NHSAP welcomes volunteers. Readers who have questions may email newhollandsummerartsassoc@ gmail.com.
Members of the New Holland Summer Arts Program committee display the quilt that the organization will give away at the Fiddler’s Picnic on Sept. 6.

Resources For Teenagers Posted

Samaritan Counseling Center reminds community members that it offers resources to help support teenagers on their journey toward mental health and wellness.
Among these resources is TeenHope, a mental health program that screens middle and high school students at Lancaster County schools for anxiety, depression, and suicide risk. After youths are identified as at-risk, TeenHope collaborates with parent and teenagers to connect them with mental health resources in the area through referral recommendations. Since the program’s beginning in 2013, more than 13,000 students have been screened.
Due to an increase in the number of local teenagers at risk for anxiety, depression, and suicide in Lancaster County in the last year, as well as the virtual schooling that has occurred during the pandemic, TeenHope is developing a fully digital screening process. The transition to digital has been fueled by the donations of many individual supporters, as well as local organizations such as the High Foundation, which contributed a $15,000 grant, and LOHF, which provided a total of $30,000 in grants.
Parents, grandparents, and loved ones can find resources for the teenagers in their lives at www.scclanc.org/ teenhope/resources.

Factory Prints, a small printshop located in the Together Community Center, 3293 Lincoln Highway East, Paradise, has its roots in the need for sustainability of The Factory Ministries, which provides a youth center and social services, including a food pantry, to the under-resourced in the Paradise community.
According to executive director Adam Nagle, the organization has looked hard at assets, including the building, which is the former Paradise Elementary School, to find ways to add revenue and provide workforce development. When the ministry scrutinized expenses, it was discovered that printing for mailings and invitations was a significant expense. “We began asking what it would cost to get our own machine and would it save us money,” said Nagle. “We learned that we could, and that it would save us money.”
By early 2020, the organization had married the two findings to open Factory Prints, an entity located in the community center that offers print services and personalized service for small print jobs. Among the offerings are business cards, postcards, rack cards, booklets, and invitations.
Unfortunately, the shop opened in February 2020, not long before COVID-19 restrictions closed the state in March. “It’s kind of hard to launch a print shop during a pandemic,” said Megan Rogers, who took over running the shop from Kylie Stoltzfus, who was serving as director of communications at the time. In June of 2020, Factory Prints relaunched, and by July, Rogers, who is a student at Lancaster Bible College (LBC), was transitioning into the position Stoltzfus had been filling. Rogers works as many as 30 hours a week, spending time at the shop in between classes and playing soccer for LBC. She is pleased with the work she has learned to produce, pointing out pieces she has printed for The Treasure Place in Intercourse and Servant Stage.
Nagle noted that one goal of the program is to eventually train and credential employees. “The machine we needed for the caliber of printing we were after was a Xerox digital professional machine,” said Nagle, who noted that Xerox runs a workforce development credentialing program for the equipment. “We are looking ahead to the next phase (of workforce development),” Nagle said.
Rogers noted that the shop’s services are not the only reason customers come to Factory Prints. Quoting one of her LBC professors, she stated, “People don’t buy what you do; they buy why you do it. The reason we print is because of where the money will go.”
Nagle agreed. “By purchasing a print job, (our customers) are serving those who are under-resourced in the community,” he said.
Readers who would like to know more about Factory Prints may search for “Factory Prints” on Facebook or email megan@thefactory ministries.com.

DVGRR Will Host Open House

Pathways Hybrid Homeschool students have been working with Brecknock Township to enhance Brubaker Park, a 90-acre public use park located in northeastern Lancaster County.
The students recently helped the Lancaster Conservation District plant trees and shrubs in the riparian buffer along the newly improved Black Creek section of the park. The stream improvement project began last fall as a joint effort between Lancaster Conservation District, Brecknock Township and the Exelon Corporation, which provided the funds. Students watched and learned as the improvement project progressed through various stages, and then students assisted in plantings this spring. They will conduct stream studies over the next months and compare the results to stream studies they did prior to the improvement project.
Pathways has also been instrumental in securing grants from the Sierra Club and the Schuylkill Highlands Conservancy to establish a native pollinator field on the east side of the park. Phase one was started last fall, the seeds were “snow sown” this winter, and the plants are beginning to grow. Phase two will involve clearing the next section of invasive honeysuckle and multi-flora rose. Community volunteers are welcome to join the students and can express interest by contacting Pathways using the contact information at www.learningatpathways.org.
This spring, park visitors can enjoy an education signboard created by the students at the lower entrance to the park. The display showcases spring wildflowers that can be found at Brubaker Park, along with a take-along spring wildflower scavenger hunt. The students built the signboard and work on creating evolving educational displays.
Past projects have included trail cleanup, bluebird boxes, the raising and release of trout fingerlings and general upkeep.

In collaboration with Carnegie Hall, the Lancaster Symphony Orchestra recently participated in Link Up, a music education program provided by Carnegie Hall’s Weill Music Institute (WMI). The 2020-21 season’s theme was “The Orchestra Rocks.” The nearly 5,500 students involved in Link Up participated in a virtual culminating concert beginning on May 17 where they sang and played the recorder or the violin with the orchestra from their classroom or home. This performance often serves as students’ first concert experience and provides them with the opportunity to apply the musical concepts they have studied.
For more than 30 years, Link Up has paired orchestras with students in grades three through five at schools in their local communities to explore orchestral repertoire and fundamental musical skills, including creative work and composition, through a hands-on music curriculum. Link Up addressed the need for music instruction and resources by providing a free, yearlong curriculum that teachers can implement, along with classroom materials, online video and audio resources, and the professional development and support necessary to make the program an engaging experience for students.
The Lancaster Symphony Orchestra is one of 120 national and international organizations that were chosen for this program. Visit www.carnegiehall.org/LinkUp for further details.
