he arrival of a re-enactor posing as American Revolutionary War hero Gilbert du Motier, Marquis de Lafayette in Gap promises to be a wellattended event. The re-enactor is following the path that Lafayette took when he completed a farewell tour in 1824-25, and he will be visiting the places Lafayette stopped at on the dates that correspond to Lafayette’s journey.

Brett Snyder, vice president of the Historical Society of Salisbury Township (HSST), reported that when the real Lafayette arrived at the Mount Vernon Inn, which once stood at the top of Gap Hill near the Chester County and Lancaster County line, 1,000 people were waiting to see him. “He was like a rock star,” stated Snyder.

To celebrate the arrival of the re-enactor, HSST commissioned a painting, which has now been completed by artist Christopher Lanser of Narvon. The framed painting will be available for viewing at the annual Living History Day and Lafayette Day on Saturday, July 26, at White Chimneys, 5117 Lincoln Highway, Gap, beginning at 10 a.m. The day will feature Civil War re-enactments, house tours, open-hearth cooking, food trucks, and more. More information about the event may be found by searching for “White Chimneys” on Facebook and clicking on the “Living History Celebration” tab. A High Tea for General Lafayette will be held from noon to 2 p.m. on Sunday, July 27, at White Chimneys. The painting will be auctioned off directly following the High Tea. Funds raised from the sale of the

painting will benefit HSST. More information may be found at https://lafayette200.org.

Lafayette was not yet 20 when he came to America from France in 1777 with some military training and a passion for equality. The teenager offered his services and resources to the Americans, becoming a major general at the tender age of 19. Lafayette eventually convinced the French government to join in the war effort by sending the French Navy to America’s aid. After the war, he returned to France, where he became involved in the French Revolution. At the age of 66, he

returned to the United States and spent 13 months traveling 6,000 miles and visiting each of the 24 states in existence at the time.

HSST president Leona Baker felt it was necessary to have a painting to commemorate the event, and she remembered Lanser, who had given a presentation to HSST that included some of his paintings. “We had knowledge of the fact that when Lafayette came back in 1825, he stopped near the Mount Vernon Inn before he came to White Chimneys and moved on to Lancaster,” reported Baker, who worked with Lanser to develop

the idea for the painting. Baker pointed out that in the completed piece, the Mount Vernon Inn is in the background on the hill. In the foreground, Lafayette is reviewing his former regiment. Route 30 - then known as the Lincoln Highway - runs through the right side of the painting.

Lanser pointed out some of the details in the painting that he added, including a Conestoga wagon. “It’s so Lancaster County,” he noted. There is also a carriage similar to what Lafayette would have traveled in that was suggested by Baker. Lanser painted a replica of the French flag at the

Emilie Thibeault first picked up a baton to “try” twirling at the age of 7. “I have never put the batons down (since then),” recalled Thibeault.

Kyleigh Jarvis started twirling for “fun” at age 9. Like Thibeault, Jarvis continued twirling. “I just really enjoyed it, and I started competing,” she stated.

The years of practice and honing their talents has paid off for both young women, who are now looking forward to competing in the International Baton Twirling Federation (IBTF) Nations Cup, sometimes referred to as the “Olympics” of baton, which will be held in Torino, Italy, from Saturday, Aug. 2, through Sunday, Aug. 10. To help defray travel expenses, a chicken barbecue will be held at Paradise Fire Company, 5 Hershey Ave., Paradise, on Friday, June 20, from 4 to 7 p.m. A chicken barbecue meal, which will include a leg and a thigh or a breast, chips, a beverage, and dessert, may be purchased, or people may buy chicken alone for a reduced cost. Those who wish to preorder chicken may call 717-687-5212.

Both Thibeault and Jarvis twirled with Pequea Valley High School (PVHS) marching band, and both qualified for the IBTF championships at a National Baton Twirling Association (NBTA) competition held in Aiken, S.C., in January. Thibeault placed first in the adult solo category and second in the three-baton category. “Multiple

At the bottom of Gap Hill, across from Phil’s Barber Shop, is a home built at least 250 years ago. While the deed chain is broken, there is enough to establish that the house was built in the 1700s. There is speculation that it may have been yet another tavern in the valley.

In the early 1700s, William Penn’s agents were selling property rights in the lush Pequea Valley. Thomas Johnson may have been one of the buyers. Property lines

involved wording such as “such-and-such feet from the property of Thomas McIlvaine” and “so many feet from the red oak tree.”

A 1731 deed abstract of Thomas Cowan mentions “so many feet from the property line of Thomas Johnson” and mentions the Philadelphia-Lancaster Pike as part of that section of the property.

The present owners have discovered that Samuel Johnson the elder inherited the farm upon the death of his father, Thomas Johnson, in 1757. Samuel Johnson the younger, in turn, inherited it from

his father. The very word “farm” indicates there was, of necessity, a barn. Presumably, there was also a house, since three generations are mentioned.

Perhaps the years of political unrest leading up to and including the Revolutionary War were what sank the younger Samuel and his family into debt.

The next deed record is dated 1787, during the

early days of the fledgling United States. It lists James (Samuel the younger’s son) and Margaret Johnson transferring ”168 acres to James Hopkins, esq. in payment of Samuel Johnson’s estate debt for 1052 English pounds, to be paid in gold.” Hopkins apparently did not trust the newly instituted United States

time of the event hanging on the Mount Vernon Inn. He also included the American flag, the Pennsylvania state flag, and the flag of the regiment from southern Lancaster County that stands before Lafayette for review. Lanser made sure to feature a few older soldiers - one with a wooden leg - and a few African American gentlemen. He pointed out that African Americans were among the soldiers who fought in the Revolutionary War. He also added a bald eagle in the sky. A young boy in uniform stands in front of the regiment and salutes Lafayette. “I added the little fellow for a bit of whimsey,” stated Lanser, who first took up the art of painting in 2006. “It’s the best job I’ve ever had,” he noted. Lanser is now retired after teaching history at Conestoga Christian School for a number of years. “I love history,” he added.

baton is definitely my strong suit,” she noted. Jarvis placed third in strut and second in duet at the NBTA event. She noted that those are the areas where her strengths lie. Her duet partner is Iris Hatchet of Aiken, S.C. Reaching the Nations Cup competition has been on the radar for both girls for many years. “Qualifying is the biggest thing,” shared Jarvis. Thibeault added that only a certain number of twirlers can qualify for each category.

Thibeault, who recently received her master’s degree in speech language pathology from Lebanon Valley College (LVC), has been the featured twirler for the school since her freshman year. She is now coaching a majorette line to perform with the LVC marching band.

Jarvis is a sophomore majoring in psychology and the featured twirler at the University of North Carolina (UNC), Charlotte, N.C.

Jarvis explained that twirling routines generally follow a set structure, starting with an opening, finger twirls, rolls, horizontal twirls, and an ending. Thibeault noted that structure leaves plenty of room for creativity. “What you do with (the routine) is up to you and your coach,” she pointed out. Jarvis added that personalized tricks and

flips may be added, but certain moves are not allowed in some competitions. Both young women are connected to more than one twirling team or studio. Thibeault twirls and teaches with Ab-Salute Twirling in Brownstown and Studio Orange in Powell, Tenn. Jarvis twirls with the M Twirling Team in State College and the Carolina Twirling Club in Aiken, S.C. Looking ahead, the duo

reported that in Italy they will compete against twirlers from 19 countries. “I’m looking forward to being able to represent the U.S. and continue to do what I love on the international stage,” shared Thibeault. Jarvis has a similar goal. “I’m looking forward to being able to represent the U.S. no matter how well we do,” she noted. “Making it this far is an accomplishment in itself.”

VisionCorps Names New President and CEO

Paul Trunk, chair of the VisionCorps Board of Directors, recently announced that Megan Tomsheck will be the new president and CEO of VisionCorps.

Tomsheck will begin her new role on Wednesday, Oct. 1. Dennis Steiner, current president and CEO, is scheduled to retire on Friday, Oct. 31. Until then, said Trunk, she will be working closely with Steiner to ensure a smooth transition in leadership.

Tomsheck started at VisionCorps in 2007, and after working in both marketing and development, she advanced to the senior vice president/ chief development officer. According to Trunk, Tomsheck solicited the first $1 million gift for the agency and organized Eye Drop, the agency’s annual signature fundraiser, which is on par to surpass $1 million since its start in 2019.

Most recently, she led the agency in the acquisition of the Little Rock, Ark., facility and business lines, increasing the number of employees by 50 and anticipated revenue by 10%.

Tomsheck said she understands the changing nature of a social service agency and has experienced it. When she started at VisionCorps, the agency was only serving and offering employment in Lancaster and Lebanon. Since then, VisionCorps has grown to cover five counties in Pennsylvania, began a new remote Professional Services Division (PSD) and added a facility in Little Rock.

She added that next year is the agency’s 100th anniversary. To learn more, visit www.visioncorps.net.

The deed chain is lost until 70 years later, when the property is advertised in a sheriff’s sale due to ”failure to pay taxes.” At that time, Nathaniel Ellmaker and Samuel Slocum, next-door neighbors, are the purchasers. A “large two-story house, Swisser barn,” plus several outbuildings are listed, indicating a well-established farm, years in the making.

Within two years, Ellmaker unburdened his share of the property to Slocum. That deed includes a sentence stating, “the same as the indenture” and mentioning “142 acres (more or less)” and listing it as “adjoining,” mentioning by name many of the same neighbors listed in previous deeds. A search of those neighboring deed histories might reveal ownership during those missing 60 years. Slocum farmed there for 20 years, selling those 142 acres to Bernard Lechler of New York, N.Y., in 1880.

When Jennie Potts, wealthy Lancaster County business owner, acquired the acreage is unclear. But when she died in 1923, her will stated this Gap property, then called The Locusts, was to be used as a home for “indigent gentlemen.” Whether this actually materialized is not certain; research was unsuccessful.

The company managing

of the housing market high in 1948 to sell the farm to the grandparents of the present owners, starting a three-generation family of dedicated farmers who have made this grand old property their much-loved home.

Information gathered from deed abstracts in Lancaster County archives and deed search by historical society members as well as the memoir of Jenny Potts, who lived on the property in the early 1900s.

Students Graduate From Pre-apprenticeship Program

On April 24, the Manufacturers’ Association concluded its eighth program year for its high school pre-apprenticeship program with a graduation ceremony hosted at Penn State York’s campus coinciding with National Apprenticeship Week on April 30. The association’s pre-apprenticeship program introduces high school students to advanced manufacturing careers in seven trades and provides opportunities to pursue high-wage and high-demand careers locally. The program includes students from York, Lancaster, Perry, Chester, Dauphin, Cumberland, and Lebanon counties, including the Milton Hershey School and several of the region’s career and technology high schools.

This year’s pre-apprenticeship program graduated 78 students from across southcentral Pennsylvania. During the recognition event, students received their state-recognized pre-apprenticeship credentials and were congratulated by invited guests, family members,

program partners, and local manufacturing employers Eden Tool and Tate Inc.

The annual Carl Winters Jr. Memorial Scholarship, which provides $1,000 for further education or training in an industrial career, was awarded to Hayden Barr-Yendall from Red Lion High School as part of the York County Alliance for Learning (YCAL) class. Hayden plans to pursue a career in mechatronics at the York County School of Technology. The scholarship was established in honor of Carl Winters Jr. after his passing in 2019. Winters was a tool and die maker by trade for over 50 years in the York area and the creator of the original pre-apprenticeship program at the Manufacturers’ Association.

Pre-apprenticeship programs are designed to offer classroom and hands-on learning specifically to train students to enter a registered apprenticeship program with an employer or continue their technical education. The association’s program started in 2017 with a handful of students and since then

has enrolled more than 300 students across southcentral Pennsylvania in the skills program. Students receive several industry-recognized credentials and upon graduation have

Bird Club Posts Meeting, Field Trip

The Lancaster County Bird Club (LCBC) will meet on Thursday, June 12, at 7 p.m. at the Middle Creek Wildlife Management Area’s Visitor Center, 100 Museum Road, Stevens. Mercy Melo will present “Collaborations in Conservation: Working Together to Solve the American Kestrel Mystery.”

Because migratory birds do not obey state and international borders, research projects that span large geographic areas are key to understanding bird populations and how to protect them. Melo will discuss the importance of teamwork in conservation studies using examples from her research on American kestrels.

Melo is a wildlife management supervisor with the Pennsylvania Game Commission with a background in raptor biology and ecology. She got her start in raptor research through her undergraduate work with American kestrels at Cedar Crest College and continued following this passion throughout her graduate career. She completed her doctorate at the University of Massachusetts - Amherst, where she researched potential causes of the population decline in American kestrels, with the goal of developing management strategies for the species.

The meeting is free and

open to the public. For more information, call 717-8563851 or 717-725-2717.

The LCBC will also offer a field trip exploring Lancaster Conservancy’s Ferncliff Preserve and nearby Bald Eagle Road in Drumore on Sunday, June 22, starting at 7 a.m. The trip is free and open to the public, but participants must register by 6 p.m. on Saturday, June 21, by contacting trip leader Ted Nichols at 717856-3851 or tanicholsii@ gmail.com.

For more information about the club, visit www.lancasterbirdclub .org, www.facebook. com/lancasterbirdclub, or www.instagram.com/ lancasterbirdclub.

Texting Service Available to Turnpike Travelers

The Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission (PA Turnpike) has officially launched a new text messaging service, offering customers real-time communication during unexpected traffic backlogs.

The free service is available 24/7 and is designed only for PA Turnpike customers experiencing unexpected backlogs. While at a complete stop in a location where it is safe to remain stationary, through hands-free devices and voice command or through a passenger in the car, travelers may text “info” to 47676. Users are walked through prompts to verify their backlog location using GPS. Once the information is confirmed, the service provides automated updates every 15 to 20 minutes, including location-specific information about the incident, anticipated clearance times, and roadway updates. Texts stop after an incident clears. To reactivate

the service for a new incident, text 47676 again. This is not used for daily commuter traffic or constructed-related delays.

In June, Paul Miller’s Law will go into effect, prohibiting the use of hand-held mobile devices while driving. Drivers are expected to follow this and all other applicable laws and regulations related to the use of mobile devices in vehicles.

The concept for the text messaging service originated from the PA Turnpike’s annual employee innovation challenge, styled after the “Shark Tank” reality competition. The idea was for all customers to be able to text for incident updates when stuck in a backlog.

This service complements existing customer assistance offerings such as *11 and 511. Drivers can also call 911 at any time for life-threatening emergencies; criminal activity; and immediate police, fire, or EMS assistance.
