Pequea Valley

On the evening of May 16, 17 Pequea Valley High School (PVHS) seniors, their family members, and an invited teacher gathered in the school auditorium. The purpose of the event, called the Best of the Class of 2024, was to honor students who represented the top 15% of graduates academically.

The best of the class of 2024 was represented by Nicholas Ammon, Sean Ammon, Victoria Beiler, Myles Furlong, Nathan Gehman, Owen Hartmann, Annika Hofstetter, Alyssa Johnston, Lauren King, Hannah McGowan, Alyson Runner, Marina Sassaman, Grant Shaubach, Julia Spade, Shania Stoltzfus, Ivy Swann, and Gabrielle Troupe.

Jason Davis, school counselor, welcomed the group, noting that the students were worthy of the honor. “These scholars have exemplified dedication, hard work, and perseverance throughout their high school careers,” he

In 2010, Jason and Amanda Stoltzfus journeyed to Haiti as part of a team offering relief following the devastating earthquake that had struck there.

“They went there expecting to be serving short term,” said Dave Smucker, executive director of Alliance Network, of the organization’s trusted commission partners in Haiti. The newlyweds met a young Haitian boy whose parents had been killed in the earthquake. “They began caring

said. “Despite various obstacles, they continued to consistently perform at an academically high level.” He concluded by asking for a round of applause.

Assistant principal Amy Koberstein spoke to the parents and students about the importance of directed routine and showing up. She related these characteristics to the making of a proper bed, noting that this discipline can provide a sense of accomplishment and prepare one for the challenges ahead. “Seemingly mundane tasks can significantly impact one’s days and long-term success,” she pointed out, adding that of the 3,060 days the 17 students had to show up to high school, their attendance reached a level of 97%.

Assistant superintendent Rich Eby offered recognition from the school. He quickly pointed out that the 97% attendance rate was 13% above the state average. Eby noted that as the students leave PVHS, they will meet challenges. “You will

have a phenomenal opportunity to make an impact on the next generation,” he said. “The impact you will have on each person you come into contact with (can leave) them in a better place than when they originally met you.” Eby advised, “Let compassion for people be your guiding principle. Never

underestimate the monumental impact you have the ability to make.”

Bryant Ferris, Pequea Valley School District board vice president, offered the final remarks, likening the challenges of life to the skills needed to hit a baseball. “Are any of you baseball fans? Philly fans?” he asked.

“The lesson that baseball gives us is that you will be much more prepared for the life events that come your way if you can learn to hit a curveball.”

PVHS scheduled graduation exercises for 115 members of the Class of 2024 for Wednesday, May 29, at 6 p.m. at Calvary Church in Lancaster.

“We are keeping (Lunch & Learns) really similar (to last year),” said Karla Beiler, elementary programs director with The Factory Ministries. Lunch & Learns give Pequea Valley-area children an opportunity to enjoy a free lunch and to take part in group games, STEM activities, crafts, gross motor activities, reading enrichment, and more.

During the summer of 2024, Lunch & Learns will take place in Paradise Park, 6 London Vale Road, Gordonville, on Wednesdays from July 10 to 31, Aug. 7

from 10 to 11:30 a.m. Activities are designed for elementary-age students, and children and youths from birth to age 18 are welcome. Parent or caregiver supervision is required for children that attend. Organizers request that families that plan to attend register ahead of time at https://tinyurl.com/ pvlunchlearn.

Lunches will include a variety of food items, such as sandwiches, crackers, cheese, meat, vegetables, and snacks. An advocate from The Factory will be on site to talk to families that have a further need for food and connect them with resources such as

Spring road safety urged

Pennsylvania farmers are returning to their fields for spring planting, which means that drivers should be alert for large farm equipment on rural roadways.

As part of Rural Roads Safety Week, April 14 to 20, Pennsylvania Farm Bureau and its partners in the state government encouraged motorists to be cautious on roadways. Each year, Pennsylvania Farm Bureau partners with the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT), Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture and Pennsylvania State Police to spread the message of staying safe on rural roads during the height of the spring planting season.

Farm equipment can legally be operated on roadways, including at night, but farmers are required to follow certain safety guide-

TRUCKLOAD YARD SALE

lines depending on the size of equipment moved. All farm equipment that travels at speeds less than 25 miles per hour is required to have a slow-moving vehicle emblem - an orange triangle with red outline - on the back of the equipment.

If drivers see the slow-moving vehicle emblem, they should slow down immediately. Drivers should be alert that farm equipment may be turning at an unexpected place, such as into a field, and may be making a wide left turn if it pulls to the right. Drivers should always be sure the oncoming lane is clear and visible before passing large equipment, and they should never pass in a no-passing zone or within 100 feet of any intersection, railroad grade crossing, bridge, elevated structure, or tunnel. Drivers are also reminded to be patient, wear a seat belt, and not drive impaired or distracted.

PFB, along with representatives from PennDOT, the Pennsylvania State Police and the Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture, as well as state Sen. Wayne Langerholc Jr., held a demonstration and event promoting Rural Roads Safety Week at Bill and Joyce Krug’s Farm in Loretto on April 15. County farm bureaus across Pennsylvania also hold local events in their communities to promote safe driving on rural roads.

For additional information about Rural Roads Safety Week and safety tips for drivers and farmers, visit www .pfb.com/RRS.

UDSF receives donation Garden Spot Village receives recognition

UnitedHealthcare

Community Plan of Pennsylvania has provided a $180,000 investment to the United Disabilities Services Foundation (UDSF) to support aging and disability services for adults across the state. UDSF is committed to creating a world where everyone can live their best lives. The nonprofit offers programs and resources to support people who are living with disabilities, aging, or recovering from an injury.

The investment from UnitedHealthcare will build capacity for programs and services offered by UDSF.

Among these programs is the Resource Center, a centralized location where individuals can receive assistance from per -

son-centered counselors to access available resources, including life planning and support, personal care and independence services, and enrichment and life skills.

The service dog program will also benefit. UDSF service dogs are trained for over two years by dedicated volunteers and professionals. The dogs then support people who have a mobility disability, autism, or post-traumatic stress disorder.

UDSF also supports the Challenger Football and Cheerleading League, which provides opportunities for people ages 8 to 21 with disabilities to exercise and have fun. The league allows every player to participate to his or her level of ability.

The grant proposals, submitted to the Sierra Club - Lancaster Group over the past several months, were evaluated on criteria such as environmental objective, unique aspect of the project,

quality of submission, and how the Lancaster Group might be involved.

The grants were in the past financed primarily with funds generated by the group’s Polar Bear 5K Trail Run/Hike and more recently were funded with money donated to the Group by its participation in the ExtraGive. Charitable, educational, or business organizations in Lancaster County that demonstrate a commitment to the Sierra Club’s mission of “exploring, enjoying, and protecting the planet” are eligible to apply for a grant.

Alliance

Network from pg 1

for him and began the adoption process, which is not complete,” explained Smucker. “They can’t leave with him, and they won’t leave without him,” he added. The couple has remained in Haiti, living to serve that community. “They have learned how to live missionally,” said Smucker. “They make a difference where they are.”

Since 2022, the Lancaster for the Nations annual Benefit Tournament Weekend has supported the couple’s mission to Haiti. The 2024 event will be held on Friday, June 7, from noon to 10 p.m. and Saturday, June 8, beginning at 7 a.m. at Paradise Community Park, 6 London Vale Road, Gordonville. Past events have featured nearly 40 softball teams and up to 20 volleyball teams.

The tournament is the brainchild of former Lancaster County resident Ray Beiler, who still organizes the event from his new home in Sacramento, Calif. The first tournament was organized when Beiler learned that a friend of a friend had been

paralyzed in a snowmobile accident. Following the initial successful event, attendees suggested that Beiler continue it. For a time, individuals in need in the community benefited, and then a YWAM base in Mexico received funds. “When Alliance got involved, we asked if it could go to one of our trusted mission partners,” reported Smucker, who presented options to tournament organizers, who prayed about the decision and chose the couple serving in Haiti.

To satisfy hungry attendees at the tournament weekend, food will be available for purchase. Beiler listed cheesesteaks, burgers, hot dogs, fresh salads, watermelon, smoothies, and ice cream, along with fried shrimp and french fries. Both evenings from 5 to 7 p.m., a pork stack dinner will be served. “A pork stack includes smoked pulled pork, Southern coleslaw, smoked beans, mac and cheese, barbecue sauce, and crushed Doritos,” said Beiler.

Gospel concerts will be held on both nights, with

Broadway and Paradise Road playing on June 7 and Broadway and Dan and Amanda Esh playing on June 8.

According to Beiler, prizes and giveaways featured during the tournament will include a Louisiana Grills Pellet grill, a hunting blind, a guitar, a new hunting bow, a pickleball kit, and a $1,000 gift card package.

Last year’s tournament raised nearly $60,000, and organizers would like to raise more this year. “(That amount) goes pretty far in Haiti,” said Smucker, who is grateful to those who give.

“I think the biggest thing is just that this event always highlights the generosity of

the incredible community we are a part of,” he said. Smucker noted that the work of the Stoltzfuses in Haiti includes developing young leaders, building homes, helping out at a children’s home, and Amanda serving as the local nurse. They also serve a village in the mountains, which can only be accessed by a 16-mile foot path. “They built more than 500 homes there since the hurricane of 2016,” said Smucker.

Teams that would like to participate in the tournament may sign up at www.lancastertour naments.com/lancaster -for-the-nations. Teams are asked to register by Tuesday, June 4. Individuals who have questions or who would like to volunteer to help may call 717-984-0293.

At North Market, Samaritan Center is opening up to the community

New isn’t necessarily improved; bigger isn’t necessarily better. But when the topic is mental health services, more is almost always desirable.

Samaritan Center is expanding its counseling services. It’s a move intended to provide more hope for a healthier, happier and better-adjusted community.

“We know that counseling works, that it improves lives,” said Steve Schedler, executive director of Samaritan Center. “For many, it’s a game-changer. What people come in with is very diverse, but there are some common threads. Counseling can give people a different way of thinking and navigating emotions and how they handle relationships. There are also these positive examples of people growing.”

At the beginning of April, Samaritan Center opened a new counseling space at 33 N. Market St., Lancaster, to augment the mission started at its main location at 1803 Oregon Pike, Lancaster. In addition to increasing the nonprofit’s coverage area, the downtown office will allow Samaritan Center to reach more people and provide more mental health services.

“We’re very aware of the gap between demand and the availability of counseling,” said Schedler.

“We’re involved in that conversation. The good news is that we’ve seen a turn in people’s willingness to get help since

COVID. Who doesn’t need to talk to somebody? Now we’re seeing the response to that. We saw a record demand over the last four years. Progress is being made, but it will take years to level back out.”

Housed on the fourth floor of a historic building near Lancaster Central Market, Samaritan Center North Market features five new counseling offices. Samaritan Center, which is operated by 41 employees, 25 of whom

Samaritan Center

are full-time or part-time therapists, has added five new counselors.

“It’s everyone in the community, from all walks of life,” said Schedler of Samaritan Center’s counseling clientele. “We’ve seen all ages reach out. It could be older adults; some of our counselors work with children and teens, families, couples, individuals. There really are no groups of folks not reaching out. We have in-person and virtual capabilities, so we can work with anyone in Pennsylvania. But the bulk of our clients seen in-house are Lancaster County residents.”

In 2023, Samaritan Center provided more than 14,000 counseling sessions. With the addition of North Market, Samaritan Center now has the capability to provide an additional 6,000 sessions.

“Samaritan Center does many things in the community, and counseling is just one of them,” said Schedler. “We just reached a point where we were out of space. We wanted to come up with a way to serve more people, and we’re excited about being

in the city for the first time. Our goal is to provide improved mental health to everyone. Samaritan Center’s mission is to be as accessible as possible to meet people’s needs for counseling services, and now we’re more accessible than ever.”

Samaritan Center was established in 1987 by a group from Highland Presbyterian Church, 500 E. Roseville Road, Lancaster, interested in providing accredited, faith-based counseling. Over the last 37 years, the services Samaritan Center provides have changed to meet the evolving needs of the community.

“It was really a leap of faith to jump out and start a new counseling center,” said Schedler. “Over time, Samaritan Center has established itself by providing high-quality counseling services. Mostly through word of mouth, many lives have been changed. We’ve had a legacy of growing thoughtfully.”
