On May 15, Pequea Valley High School (PVHS) showed appreciation to the top 15% of the Class of 2025 by inviting seniors with the highest grade point averages, along with their parents, to gather for recognition in the auditorium.
The event, known as the Best of the Class of 2025, was opened by school counselor Jason Davis, who noted that these select students have “demonstrated remarkable dedication, resilience and a strong commitment to excellence throughout their educational journey.”
“Despite facing personal and collective challenges, they continue to strive and thrive academically. Their determination, focus, and passion for success are truly commendable,” Davis said.
Assistant principal Amy Koberstein offered remarks of recognition from the school. She

based her speech on the book “Unbroken: A World War II Story of Survival, Resilience, and Redemption” by Laura Hillenbrand, noting that Louis Zamperini - the subject of the book - led a life that embodied “the true meaning of grit.” “I reflect on the story every year at this time,” said Koberstein, noting that she
hopes to see graduating students take Zamperini’s characteristics with them as they leave the school. Koberstein briefly discussed Zamperini’s life as a troubled youth who found stability through running and even took part in the Olympics. While serving in the military, during World War II, Zamperini survived
a plane crash only to spend nearly 50 days drifting in the Pacific Ocean before being captured and spending two years as a prisoner of war. “He refused to give up,” noted Koberstein. “His perseverance through trauma was nothing short of heroic.”
She went on to explain that grit is not about strength, but rather
about endurance. “It’s about pushing forward when every part of you wants to give up,” she said. “As assistant principal, I see firsthand what grit looks like in high school students,” she added, noting the accomplishments of the students in the room who had attended college courses and summer leadership programs and

Lisa Eckert, director of early learning with Pequea Valley School District (PVSD), has made a few changes to the Lunch & Learns held in the park each summer.
“This year, we switched it up a little,” reported Eckert.
Among the changes, the program has moved from midsummer to June. This year’s Lunch & Learns will be held on Wednesdays, June 11 to July 9.
As in the past, the 2025 events will take place in Paradise Park, 6 London Vale Road, Gordonville, from 10 to 11:30 a.m.

Bespoke Brewing and Barebones Bicycle & Fitness are banding together for the inaugural Bespoke Benefit Ride.
The event for bicyclists will be held Saturday, June 7, and will commence and conclude at Bespoke Brewing, 226 Gap Road, Strasburg.
Anyone interested in participating can register at www.bespoke brewingco.com/events right up until check-in begins at 9 a.m.
Speckled Hen will provide coffee and pastries for riders during registration.
There will be two rides, which will be held rain or shine, and both will begin at 10 a.m. A 3.5-mile supported ride through town will be led by the Strasburg Borough police and is suited for casual riders and families. There will also be a self-supported 30-mile ride for intermediate to advanced bicyclists that will wind through Strasburg Township and will include changes in elevation.
The fee will include a noon get-together at Bespoke, which will feature live music, a smoked barbecue meal for adults, and a kids’ meal option.
The Best of the Class of 2025 was honored at an event held in the Pequea Valley High School auditorium on May 15.
Pequea Valley School District students enjoyed lunch and learning experiences at the 2024 Lunch & Learns held in Paradise Park.

As always, Lunch & Learns will offer Pequea Valley-area children an opportunity to enjoy a free lunch and to take part in group games, STEM activities, crafts, gross motor activities, reading enrichment, and more. However, this year, some of the enrichment activities that are part of each Lunch & Learn will be honed to align with the Summer Bridge Challenge that PVSD is putting in place for students this summer.
“The school will send out Summer Bridge Activity packets,” explained Eckert, who noted that the packets will include a book and resources for the learners along with exercises to do at home. “We are tweaking the enrichment activities to focus on different skills the school is sharing for summer work. We are designing all our activities to go with that.” Eckert noted that each student’s packet will be based on his or her grade level. “There are flash cards and other (learning devices) in this pack, and we will have
a space for them to work on these,” noted Eckert, who added that bonus activities from the book, such as science experiments, will be incorporated into the Lunch & Learn enrichment stations.
Lunch & Learn activities are designed for elementary-age students, and children and youths from birth to age 18 are welcome. Parent or caregiver supervision is required for children who attend. Organizers request that families that plan to attend register ahead of time at https://tinyurl .com/4248j29y. “Registration helps us to plan,” noted Eckert.
Lunches will include a variety of food items, such as sandwiches, crackers, cheese, meat, vegetables, and snacks. Advocacy resources from The Factory
Ministries will be available for families to learn about the availability of food and other aid.
As in the past, Lunch & Learn enrichment activities will include presentations by local guests, including Girvin’s Gardeners and the Paradise Fire Company.
According to Eckert, the idea is to offer lunch and a chance to learn in a comfortable atmosphere. “We will have free books - both new and used books - and time for reading,” she said. “It’s set up to be very casual.”
The annual Back-to-School
Extravaganza will be held on Wednesday, Aug. 6, from 6 to 7 p.m. at The Factory Ministries, 3293 Lincoln Highway East, Paradise. This year’s giveaway will feature free school supplies and free haircuts.
Volunteers are needed to help with both the Lunch & Learns and the Back-toSchool Extravaganza. Donations of school supplies are requested as well. Readers who would like to help out by donating or volunteering may email Lisa-eckert@ pequeavalley.org or call 717-314-2517.
Fire company hosts breakfast
The Intercourse Fire Company, 10 N. Hollander Road, Intercourse, will hold an all-you-can-eat breakfast buffet on Saturday, May 31, from 6 to 10 a.m. There are options for eat-in or takeout. There is a fee, with a discount for kids ages 4 to 8. Children age 3 and under may eat for free.

how they had changed the school environment. “Their commitment to themselves and other learners transformed our school community,” she said. In parting, Koberstein noted that students should take what they have learned to the following chapter. “As you step into the next phase of life, remember success isn’t always about talent or luck; it’s about grit. ... As you get ready to walk into your future, carry the spirit of grit with you, and may you remain unbroken.”
Assistant to the Pequea Valley School District (PVSD) superintendent Rich Eby offered recognition from the school district by first listing career hopes of the top students, which included business management, finance, anesthesiology, chemistry, accounting, ecology, graphic design, manufacturing, and sports management. Eby stressed the effect the students could have on their environments once they move beyond the walls of PVHS. “As you step into the world beyond PV, you carry more than just diplomas; you carry the potential, purpose, and power,” he said. “I urge you to understand the responsibility of the impact you can have on the future.” In encouraging students to be active in their future communities, he noted, “This world is ever changing. We need your voice, your compassion, and your courage.” To lessen the weight of responsibility moving forward, Eby added, “Being an engaged citizen doesn’t mean having all the answers but being willing to ask the right questions. It means listening, learning, and being present in your communities, workplaces, and relationships.” In closing, Eby stated, “Your actions have the power to ripple outward. Be brave enough to try and humble enough to grow. Society needs you as an engaged citizen.”
Pequea Valley School Board vice president Fred Hertzler provided recognition of the students from the school board by reminding them of the lessons found in the “Winnie-the-Pooh” books by A. A. Milne. Hertzler focused
on the characters in the books and what each can impart about how to live life. “Pooh thinks a lot about honey for himself,” noted Hertzler. “Take time for yourself, but don’t think it’s all about you. You need balance.” Hertzler went on to use Piglet as an example of how students should surround themselves with supportive people and the sad character of Eeyore to encourage them to face negativity by gathering the necessary supports to succeed. Pointing out that Tigger is the bounciest of the characters, he noted, “Take time to relax and have fun.” Lastly, Hertzler said that Owl represented the mentor that each student should seek.
Each of the top students
present was asked to come to the podium to receive a certificate and provide information about themselves, including their plans following graduation and which teacher they had invited to the event to be honored as a person who had been a positive influence during their time in PVSD. Students in the top 15% of the PVHS Class of 2025 are Emily Eckenrode, Hayden Winey, Bailey Scott, Hannah Kern, Taylor Gehman, Savannah Lantz, Samantha Groff, Brianna Lourido, Carissa Sensenig, Trevor Vollmer, Cole Stoltzfus, Jaxson Zook, Morgan Graham, Sydney Roye, Jackson Hershey, Lana Willenbrock, and Abigail Beiler.

Bespoke Benefit Ride
from pg 1
The proceeds will go to The Factory Ministries, a nonprofit in Paradise that has a food pantry and serves as a hub to connect
people to resources.
“They have a lot of programs for people in our area,” said Ryan Dagen, one of the ride’s organizers.
“They’re making a bigger and bigger impact in the community, and I really believe in what they’re doing.”
Ryan and his wife, Janae, own Speckled Hen, and the Dagens and Jon Sager own Bespoke Brewing. Tim and Kristie Nies own Barebones Bicycle & Fitness, which is also located in Strasburg.
Ryan, a graduate of Lampeter-Strasburg High School, will take part in the 3.5-mile ride along with his parents, Janae, and his and Janae’s three children. “One of the things we wanted to
make sure of when doing the bicycle ride is there was an option for a more casual ride to do with your family,” said Ryan.
Ryan has been an avid bicyclist since he can remember. In 2007, he embarked on a cross-country trip starting in Ocean City, Md., and made it over 2,000 miles to western Colorado before being seriously injured in an accident. In addition to Speckled Hen, Bespoke Brewing, and Barebones Bicycle & Fitness, the benefit bike ride is sponsored by Red
Truck Heating & Cooling, Pellman Foods, Conestoga Country Kitchens, Metzler Home Builders, DavCo Advertising, and The Carriage House.
Ryan is hoping the Bespoke Benefit Ride will become an annual event. “Obviously, our businesses
benefit from out-of-town guests,” he said. “But it’s really the local community that keeps us in business. So any time we can use our businesses as a platform to give back to the community that gives so much to us, we relish in those opportunities to do so.”
Strasburg businessman Ryan Dagen is one of the organizers of the Bespoke Benefit Ride.
WITF to host free educational events
Pennon Education and WITF will host two free, family-friendly “Ready, Set, Explore Slide Into Summer” events. On Saturday, May 31, the event will take place from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the WITF Public Media Center, 4801 Lindle Road, Harrisburg. The event on Saturday, June 7, will take place from 1 to 4 p.m. at the Lancaster Public Library, 151 N. Queen St., Lancaster.
The first 50 families to check in at each event will receive a free STEM in a Box education kit packed with materials to encourage summer learning. Each child who attends one of the events will receive a free copy of “The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind” by William Kamkwamba and Bryan Mealer, available as a picture book or young reader’s edition. The events will also offer activities for families, including creating a pinwheel to investigate how wind creates energy, coding hungry Ozobot “ants” to eat a picnic, building a bee hotel to support local pollinators, designing a rollercoaster to explore force and motion, planting a seed to watch it grow all summer long, and taking a picture with Molly from PBS KIDS’ “Molly of Denali.”
Every activity is inspired by and connected to a book, allowing families to make connections between the stories and their own creations.
People who attend the Harrisburg event will have the opportunity to experience the new Digital Creator Studio at the WITF Public Media Center. Families will discover the science behind green screens by choosing a summer photo background and transporting themselves to sunny beaches, vibrant parks or tropical paradises. The Digital Creator Studio will also host several youth summer camps and Youth Voice initiatives this summer where local students will learn how to critically analyze and create their own dig -
ital content. Activities at both events are designed for children ages 3 to 14, but people
of all ages are welcome. For more information or to register, visit www.witf .org/ready.
