Pequea Valley Students Win State TSA Conference
BY LOGAN MOYER
Pequea Valley Secondary students Kelsey Della Rova and Carlee Culp recently placed first in the “Technology Problem Solving” category at the Pennsylvania Technology Student Association (TSA) conference, held at Seven Springs Mountain Resort near Pittsburgh from April 15 to 18.
After qualifying by placing in the regional competition, the duo beat over four dozen teams from the commonwealth. More than 1,800 students from 145 different chapters competed at the state conference.
Della Rova and Culp were tasked with making two marbles cross paths after being given rudimentary materials like paper, string and paper clips. The competition tasks students to use problem-solving skills in a 90-minute window.
“I kind of come up with the ideas, and then Carlee runs through it and makes sure it holds up,” Della Rova said.
Both 11th-grade students were
competing in the event for the fourth time. When asked what was different about this year’s competition, Della Rova had a simple answer.
For Auscultation Brass, Music Is Medicine
BY JEFF FALK
On the surface, there is no obvious connection between medicine and music. That is, until you realize that music goes with anything, or everything.
Auscultation Brass is a collection of healing artists and a group of musical physicians.
“I think there’s a part in our brains that, when music hits our ears, it becomes very soothing,”

West Fallowfield Christian School (WFCS) is amidst a “Growing Together Capital Campaign” that is aimed at raising money for a renovation and expansion project at the school.
Located at 795 Fallowfield Road in Atglen, adjacent to Octorara Area School District’s primary campus, renovations are already underway. The school projects that a total of $850,000 is needed for the project; $500,000 has been raised to date.
Originally a two-room schoolhouse, WFCS has greatly expanded over the past eight decades. The school originally served grades one through eight, now serves preschool through 11th grade, and plans to offer a full high school with the completion of the expansion project, which is hoped to be completed by the start of the upcoming school year.
“Our student body has steadily increased,” said WFCS principal Heather Furlong. “We saw a little pause with COVID ... five years ago we had 110 students. Now, we’re over 180.”
The renovations will take place on the second floor of the school’s additional building, which was constructed in 2006. The new project will include five new classrooms, a facilitator planning space, testing rooms and a mezzanine that is intended to serve as an event and collaboration learning space.
Completed items on the new project include the installation of a staircase, electric work and See Expansion pg 4

“We actually took the time to read the instructions,” she said.
Following the 90 minutes, judges call the top 10 teams to the stage before announcing a winner. Pequea Valley students Nora Hartmann, Caleb Smucker, Caedmon Marshall and Celine Stoltzfus also placed at the high school level in events like “Animatronics,” “Extemporaneous Speech,” “Forensic Science” and “Photographic Technology” while Luke Kauffman, Axton Smoker, Nate Hoover and Huxton Smoker also placed in the middle school division.
Outside of the competition, Della Rova and Culp both expressed loving the conference’s other activities like swimming and pickleball.
Della Rova and Culp will represent Pequea Valley and the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania at the national TSA conference, to be held from Monday to Friday, June 22 to 26, in Washington, D.C.
The national conference will task the students with a more complex problem that will force them to use stronger materials like wood and metal. The pair have been researching, looking at prompts from previous competitions to prepare.
“It’s hard to prepare for because of how openended it is,” Culp said. Neither student is sure what their postsecondary future will look like, but both are considering integrating STEM into their plans. Both thanked Pequea Valley Secondary TSA adviser Rob Dorshimer for helping them prepare for the competition.
“I think the things that we’re learning through TSA are definitely transferrable to whatever career field we wind up in,” Culp said.

said Dr. Jerry Rothacker, the scheduler and main contact for Auscultation Brass. “For years, when I did surgery, I didn’t allow music in the operating room. I didn’t want it to be a distraction.
But at one point, I told my staff, ‘I hope you don’t mind, but I’m going to play classical music.’ What I found was that it wasn’t a distraction; it helped people concentrate.
“What I was listening to wasn’t what my staff was listening to when they were driving home,” he added. “That’s the beauty of music.”
Auscultation Brass is a Lancaster-based band made up of medical professionals - nurses and mostly doctors. Medicine is their profession, and music is their interest, but they are passionate about both.
“Auscultation means to listen,” said Rothacker, a retired orthopedic surgeon and a tuba-playing resident of East Hempfield. “It’s like a doctor listening to your lungs and heart with a stethoscope. That’s Aus cultation. We had a little discussion when the band was first formed. Someone came up with Auscultation, and we said, ‘That’s it.’”
Auscultation Brass is
directed by Dr. Bob Belser, an ear, nose and throat man, while Dr. Michael Chambers, a maxillofacial surgeon, plays the trombone and serves as the group’s musical librarian. Chambers is joined on the trombone by Dr. Marguerite Duane, a family doctor.
Dr. Tom Andersen, a retired family physician, plays the tuba.
Trumpet players include Dr. Dan Diehl, a retired family doctor; Dr. Andy Lutzkanin, a family physician; and Dr. Bill Roberts, a retired family doctor.
Intensive Care Unit nurse
Kirby Strohmaier plays the French horn, as does Dr. Bill Lovett, a practicing family doctor.
Those health professionals have practiced medicine in local hospitals like Lancaster General, performed as specialists at places like Orthopedic Associates of
cializes in the genres of classical, light classical, pop, marches and movie-themed music. Over the last four decades, the members have grown as musicians, the group has evolved as a band and Auscultation Brass’ library has ballooned to more than 300 pieces of music.
“We try to practice once a week,” said Rothacker. “It’s been Sunday evenings for 40 years. At one time, that was the night that was the calmest, with medical emergencies and young kids. The thing I’m most proud of is that we’ve been able to evolve. When we first started, it was fairly basic stuff. We’re on to some more difficult music, and we’ve been able to add members.”
Established in 1985, Auscultation Brass now plays about 12 venues each year, mostly at churches,
come to our performances,” said Rothacker. “It was kind of like, ‘Hey, this guy has a life outside of medicine.’
But the story is music. You can be a musician, enjoy music and not necessarily make it your field. The members in our band are really good musicians and really good doctors.”

Association Receives Grant
The Manufacturers’ Association was selected as a recipient of a Pennsylvania Industry Partnership grant for $350,000. The grant was awarded through the Pennsylvania Department of Labor & Industry as part of a statewide $2.8 million investment announced by Gov. Josh Shapiro’s administration on April 13. The Manufacturers’ Association has been awarded $350,000 to advance the South Central Manufacturing Industry Partnership, serving manufacturers and workers across Adams, Cumberland, Dauphin, Franklin, Lancaster, Lebanon, Perry, and York counties.
Through the Manufacturing Industry Partnership, the Manufacturers’ Association will lead a comprehensive, employer-driven workforce strategy focused on five key areas. The association will seek to promote manufacturing careers to attract a strong, motivated, qualified, and diverse pool
of candidates ready to enter and thrive in today’s manufacturing environment. It will also facilitate education and adoption of robotics and artificial intelligence (AI) tools to ensure regional manufacturers remain competitive in an evolving industrial landscape. Another key area is aggregating technical skills training so manufacturers may leverage cost efficiencies, deliver high-quality training that is accessible to smaller manufacturers, and create clear career advancement pathways for workers. The association will also facilitate best practice peer learning and deepen supply chain collaboration across the southcentral Pennsylvania manufacturing community. Finally, the industry partnership will bring together organizations in economic development, education, industry, and workforce development, including the local workforce boards of SCPa Works

some plumbing. Steel framing is also in place, outlining the future classrooms.
“It’ll really hit the ground running for the physical build once the school year is complete,” Furlong said. “We’re doing a big push right now for the finances to finish.”
Aside from the capital campaign, the school is set to host its annual chicken barbecue fundraiser on Wednesday, June 17, from noon to 6 p.m. Along with the chicken, purchase of a meal includes applesauce, chips, macaroni salad, a drink and a dessert.
There will be a drivethrough on campus to pick up the meal; a picnic area will also be set up for those who want to stay and eat the meal together. Delivery is also available for businesses that order at least 10 meals; the deadline to order
delivery is Friday, June 5. Proceeds will not go toward the new building project but will instead be used for the school’s general operating budget to cover expenses such as utilities, payroll, and curriculum costs. This year’s barbecue will be the 59th in the school’s history.
WFCS, founded in 1941, serves students from the Avon Grove, Coatesville, Octorara, Oxford, Pequea Valley, Solanco and Unionville-Chadds Ford area school districts. Busing is provided, and financial aid is available.

At GSV, Wisdom Is Molded and Unfolded
BY JEFF FALK
Wisdom occurs when intelligence is aged by experiences. Garden Spot Village (GSV) believes that it can also be taught; that wisdom can be learned - or uncovered.
“Wisdom is discovery,” said Scott Miller, who’s been the chief marketing officer at GSV for 21 years. “When we discover wisdom, we discover universal truths. They apply to everyone, and they lead to more fulfilling and richer lives. When you release the grudges and hurt you have, it sets you free. It creates a peace beyond understanding. We use our intelligence to reflect on our lives, but wisdom is experiential.”
Miller is also an instructor for GSV’s Wisdom Course, a series of classes designed to help seasoned individuals explore their wisdom, develop it and harness its power. The Wisdom Course is taught in a conference room on the campus of Garden Spot Village, 433 S. Kinzer Ave., New Holland.
“The purpose of the Wisdom Course is to help older adults review their life stories and harvest their wisdom from within,”
said Miller. “We introduce people to wisdom, and we talk elderhood. Elders carry the traditions and the stories of our culture and pass them along to younger people.”
The Wisdom Course consists of a series of threehour sessions presented from 9 a.m. to noon on the third Friday of every month, from May through the end of the calendar year.
The learning sessions include instruction, writing, interaction, exercises designed to inspire reflection and the sharing of classmate stories. Near the end of the Wisdom Course, participants travel to Elizabethtown College to share their stories with college students and to learn their stories in turn.
The Wisdom Course is free to attend.
“We don’t have a map for the second half of our lives. The Wisdom Course provides the map,” said Miller, a resident of Lititz. “From youth to 35, we’re learning, we’re trying to figure things out. From 35 to 50 is midlife, and at 50 people have a tendency to look over the horizon and ask, ‘What’s next?’ That’s the ideal time to step into our elderhood,
unpack our lives and live them in balance.”
The Wisdom Course’s curriculum is built around six key developmental elements - the constructed world, the concept of objectification, the process of internalization, absolutization, renovation and rejuvenation.
“We explain this framework to people, and we have people write about portions of their lives and significant people in their lives,” said Miller. “People begin to explore their memories. We do this exercise called ‘Digging in the Basement,’ where people explore the boxes they have left closed. A lot of wisdom comes from suffering and hard times in our lives.
“People who have harvested their wisdom can share it with younger people,” added Miller. “The older generation, that’s where the wisdom is held. Everyone will listen to a good story, and then you will draw your own conclusions. The message is, ‘Everything does work out; you’ve just got to ride things out and do the best you can.’”
The Wisdom Course’s class size is limited to 16 participants. The course is open to residents of GSV and members of the community.
“They’re the people who want to contribute to the lives of others and society at large,” said Miller. “They want to continue

The industry partnership model is built on the principle that employers, educators, workforce development organizations, economic development agencies, labor entities, and community partners are strongest when they work together. For more than 20 years, the Manufacturers’ Association has championed this collaborative approach, and the new grant enables the association to deepen those connections across the region.
The grant to the Manufacturers’ Association is one of 10 industry partnership grants. Shapiro has also proposed a $3.5 million increase in industry partnership funding in his 2026-27 budget, which would bring the total state investment to $6.3 million. Manufacturers interested in participating in the no-cost industry partnership may contact the Manufacturers’ Association at office@mascpa.org or 717843-3891. Schreiber Center Holds Gala
PLACE AN AD
epcclassifieds.com
The Schreiber Center for Pediatric Development marked a historic milestone on March 28, raising a record-breaking $532,354 at its 90th Anniversary Diamond Gala to support children of all abilities across central Pennsylvania. Held at the DoubleTree Resort by Hilton Lancaster, the event brought together families, supporters, and community leaders. The money raised will fund more than 7,193 hours of therapy, helping ensure families can access care regardless of their financial circumstances.
For nearly a century, the Schreiber Center has offered therapy, education, and support to help children build confidence, gain independence, and open the door to possibility. This year’s gala reflected the collective commitment behind that work and the belief in every child’s potential.
The introduction of the 2026 Schreiber Ambassadors offered a first look at the children and families whose journeys will be shared throughout the coming year. In
addition, through a newly premiered 90th anniversary video, guests heard directly from Schreiber children and families about what Schreiber has meant in their lives. Their stories illustrated the long arc of progress and reinforced that therapy is a foundation for communication, mobility, and independence.
One moment during the gala connected past and present. Attendees celebrated Lloyd Mosemann, believed to be the organization’s oldest living client, and recognized Dennis Denenberg, a former client of founder Edna Schreiber and longtime supporter, as Philanthropist of the Year. Together, these stories reflect the lasting, generational impact of Schreiber’s mission.
Community members may support the Schreiber Center through monthly giving, volunteering, and participating in future events. For more information, visit www.schreiber pediatric.org or contact marketing manager Alexandra Cahill at acahill@ schreiberpediatric.org or 717-344-1164.
