Leacock Presbyterian Church will host its summer hymn sing on the first Sunday of the month from May through September at the Old Leacock Church, Old Leacock Road and the Old Philadelphia Pike, a mile west of Intercourse. All hymn sings will begin at 7 p.m. The church will also host a free hot meal for the community on Thursday, May 30, at Leacock Presbyterian Church, 3181 Lincoln Highway East, Paradise. Dinner will be served from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. in the handicappedaccessible Smith Fellowship Hall. PVHS Class Of 2019 Prepares To Graduate By Ann Mead Ash
Commencement services for the Pequea Valley High School (PVHS) Class of 2019 will be held at Calvary Church, 1051 Landis Valley Road, Lancaster, on Friday, May 31, at 6:30 p.m. More than 115 seniors will graduate at the ceremony. The class valedictorian is Jamie Stephan, daughter of Matt and Sharlene Stephan of New Holland. Class salutatorian is Hunter Winey, son of Kevin and Lori Winey of Narvon. Stephan will speak during the ceremony. President of the Class of 2019 Devon Clemmer, son of Martin and Jan Clemmer of Gordonville, will offer opening remarks and accept diplomas for the graduating seniors. Sophia Weaver, daughter of Phillip and Betty Weaver of Gap, and Megan Rogers, daughter of Timothy and Jennifer Rogers of Gap, will also speak, and senior members of the PVHS chamber singers will perform the school song at the close of the ceremony. Stephan wrote her speech on the topic of memories.

“The only reason we make memories is because of the people we are with,” she noted, adding that she will encourage her classmates to forge new bonds in the years ahead. “After high school, (graduates should) keep making relationships and connections so that (they) keep making memories that will last (their) whole lives,” she said. At PVHS, Stephan has been a member of National Honor Society (NHS) and Braves Club. She has served as both secretary and president of FFA. She played field hockey throughout high school, serving as captain during her senior year. Stephan also played basketball and participated in two Tribe experience trips, traveling to Montana in 2017 and hiking along the Appalachian Trail in Maryland in 2018. Outside school, she has interned with the Paradise Sportsman’s Association Trout Hatchery. the brain, and it’s a matter of learning different skills for each person depending on their situation,” said Mwangi. “Drugs (of choice) come into play from a physiological perspective, but we (at CCARS) deal with addiction as a whole.” Mwangi is the lead counselor at CCARS (Community Care and Addiction Recovery Services), one of the few licensed establishments offering addiction counseling in the northern and eastern parts of Lancaster County. Run Ride Walk Planned For Heritage Days
Paradise-area children took part in the 2018 Kids’ Fun Run, which is part of the Run Ride Walk fundraiser organized by The Together Initiative. This year’s event, which includes two bicycle rides and a 5K run/walk, along with the fun run, will take place in the Intercourse Community Park on June 15 as part of the Heritage Days Festivities. All children who run the laps will receive participation awards. Organizers encourage runners, walkers, and cyclists to form teams of family members, fellow church members, co-workers, or friends. Individuals who register by Sunday, May 26, will receive a Tshirt. Packet pickup will be held on June 14 from 5 to 8 p.m. at The Together Community Center, 3293 Lincoln Highway East, Paradise. In addition inviting to riders, runners, and walkers to take part in the event, The Factory is looking for volunteers to help on June 15. Those who wish to volunteer may call 717-687-9594. The Factory has its roots in the early 1990s, when two local churches surveyed the community about area needs. In response, a former sewing factory in Paradise was converted into The Factory Youth Center. In 2006, The Factory expanded to include social services for adults. As the organization continued to grow, the name was changed to The Factory Ministries. The Factory Ministries now offers a youth center, a food pantry, and social services, and the organization has become a hub for connecting needs and resources in the Pequea Valley area. It is a goal of the organization to empower local residents and strengthen the community.

“Even after all these years, it blows my mind: Two people walk into that birth room, and three people come out,” marveled Catherine Saunders, executive co-director with Maren Ketcham of Birth Care & Family Health Services. “It’s an amazing experience to help clients make that journey to parenthood.” Birth Care celebrated its
40th year in 2018, making it the longest continually operating freestanding birth center in the United States, according to founder Rita Rhoads Reed, looking at the records of the members of the American Association of Birth Centers. In those four decades, Birth Care’s certified nurse-midwives have welcomed more than 9,000 babies into the world. In 2018, Birth Care’s clients delivered 501 babies, See Fun Day pg 11

The eighth Run Ride Walk will take place on Saturday, June 15, beginning in the Intercourse Community Park, 3730 Old Philadelphia Pike, Gordonville, during the annual Intercourse Heritage Days observance, which will be held from Friday, June 14, through Sunday, June 16. Registration on the day of the event will begin at 6:30 a.m. The two bike rides will start at 7 a.m. The Kids’ Fun Run will start at 9 a.m., and the 5K run/walk will begin at 9:30 a.m. The Intercourse Fire Company will offer breakfast items for purchase starting at 6:30 a.m. Riders may choose the 25-mile route through the scenic countryside or, for cyclists who are looking for more of a challenge, a 62-mile metric century ride is offered. An optional King of the Mountain stage will be available for riders who prefer to take on significant inclines. Cyclists will have opportunities to win door prizes. Riders who take part in the King of the Mountain challenges will be entered in a special gift card drawing. At 10:30 a.m., awards will be presented to winners of the 5K run. Trophies will be awarded to the top overall male and female winners. Medals will be given to the top three male and female runners in seven age groups, including 14 and under, 15 to 19, 20 to 29, 30 to 39, 40 to 49, 50 to 59, and 60 and over. JM Lapp To Celebrate Open House At New Location JM Lapp Plumbing and Heating will host an open house for its customers and the community on Saturday, June 1, from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. at its new, larger facility at 330 E. Main St., New Holland. During the open house, visitors will be able to meet the JM Lapp team along with multiple vendors and factory representatives. Lapp moved its operations from a 9,000-square-foot facility in Birdin-Hand to the former Skip’s Cutting property in New Holland. Today, two separate buildings remain with approximately 47,000 square feet of space combined. Grilling over an open flame when the weather is warm embodies the relaxing spirit of spring and summer, prompting many people to leave their oven ranges behind in favor of charcoal and gas grills. As the New Holland Early Learning Center (NHELC) prepares to hold its third international meal, pastor Dawn Ranck-Hower, director Wanda Bortzel, and program coordinator Tina Hanson have been looking over the list of all the countries that will be represented. “The spotlight will be on Ethiopia and the Latin American countries,” noted Bortzel. Hanson agreed, listing Puerto Rico, Guatemala, Peru, and Mexico among the places whose cuisine will be represented, along with Pennsylvania Dutch foods. “We will have Italy, Russia, and from Asia, Vietnam,” Hanson added. Ranck-Hower chimed in, “That’s why we say we represent five continents.” The international meal will be held at the New Holland Mennonite Church, 18 Western Ave., New Holland, on Saturday, June 1, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. The buffet-style meal will allow guests to purchase food to take out or eat at the church. According to Hanson, the 2018 buffet offered 260 guests 43 unique dishes made by staff members, parents, and friends of NHELC. “We have parents and
teachers and community members from so many different countries represented here (at NHELC),” said Bortzel. “The teachers cook (dishes associated with) their heritage.” Hanson noted that they hope to serve more people at this year’s event. Dishes will be labeled and will provide guests with information about the country of origin. The meal is a fundraiser for NHELC. According to Bortzel, tuition from students covers about 85 percent of costs for the nonprofit center. Ranck-Hower explained that NHELC does not cap the number of students it enrolls who receive government aid. Funds raised by the international meal will benefit the organization’s general operating budget. Hanson noted that last year’s meal raised nearly $5,000. NHELC has set a goal of $7,500 for the 2019 meal. Sponsorships are an important part of the fundraiser. “We have reached out to more people for sponsorships (this year),” said Hanson. “ We are very appreciative of our sponsors from last year, and we think it’s important to thank them,” she stated, noting that a number of New Holland area organizations
and businesses have served as sponsors for the fundraiser. NHELC was recently awarded the STAR 3 rating by the Keystone Stars, an early education rating system that evaluates quality improvement. Bortzel noted that the Keystone representatives were impressed with the number of children with varying needs that NHELC serves. Jennifer Morales, academic and behavioral support coordinator for NHELC, acts as an advocate for parents of these students. In addition, several NHELC teachers speak Spanish, so the organization has begun offering language immersion as part of the curriculum in some classrooms. The meal will be served at a set price for those age 11 and up. Discounts will be offered for children ages 7 to 10 and 4 to 6. Children age 3 and under may eat for free. Nine members of the Town and Country Garden Club of Lancaster attended the 89th annual Garden Club Federation of Pennsylvania’s state convention in Altoona. Town and Country received first place in the medium-size club group for its club information recruitment brochure, club quarterly newsletter, club yearbook and small standard flower show, “Glorious Spring.” District IV of the Garden Club Federation of Pennsylvania, of which Town and Country is a member, received first place for its flower show, “Imagination.” Joyce Crider was installed as the state treasurer, and Elizabeth Pinkham was named headquarters secretary. Pat Drennen and Tonya Young presented designs with an “Elvis” theme for the judges’ council luncheon. Linda Pyle and Jannet Kelly represented the club in the “Trash to Treasure” garden design display. In addition, the club received a seed money grant for the Butterfly Garden at Homestead Village. Birth Care’s certified nursemidwives have office hours in Bart and Gordonville, deliver babies at the licensed and accredited birth center in Bart, and attend births at WellSpan Ephrata Hospital. One of the hallmarks of Birth Care is its commitment to making personalized care to mothers and new babies available regardless of ability to pay. Between 75 and 80 percent of Birth Care’s clients are uninsured. “I think that’s an important thing for people to know,” Ketcham said, noting that Birth Care offers a sliding fee scale based on clients’ financial condition. The board of directors also forgives the bills of families in dire need. To subsidize the discounts, Birth Care hosts an annual benefit sale on Memorial Day weekend. This year, the sale will be held on Saturday, May 25, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Bart Fire Company, 11 Furnace Road,
the club as one of its community service projects. The club’s vision is to encourage friendships and extend knowledge of horticulture by visiting gardens, inviting speakers to meetings and providing opportunities for members to share gardening experiences with each other. The club was founded in 1956 and is celebrating 63 years as a garden club. Town and Country has been a member of the Garden Club Federation of Pennsylvania for more than 50 years. The club’s activities include bus trips, an annual plant sale, a monthly newsletter, community projects, craft workshops and flower shows. The club also provides scholarships and cares for the environment. Meetings are held on the first Wednesday of each month from March through December at 7 p.m. in the Bachman Center of Homestead Village, 633 Community Way, Lancaster. Salegoers may expect to see quilts and comforters, crafts, plants, garden items, a child’s picnic table, a rabbit hutch, a shed, lots of gift certificates, a giant glass jar partly filled with buttons, a brand-new lawn mower, hanging baskets, antiques, and more. “There will still be a lot of surprises that people will give us,” Ketcham commented. At noon, drawings for themed baskets will take place. The drawings are a popular feature of the benefit sale, and entrants must be present to win. When attendees are hungry, there will be a number of foods to choose from, such as chicken barbecue, subs, cheesesteaks, fried shrimp, hot dogs, and burgers. Side and dessert offerings will
include soup, fries, hand-rolled soft pretzels, soft-serve ice cream, fresh fruit, and freshly squeezed lemonade. A separate stand will sell individually priced candy. A few years ago, Birth Care added a Family Fun Day element to the benefit sale. Barrel train rides, mechanical bull rides, a bounce house, and an inflatable obstacle course will be available for youngsters to enjoy free of charge. The activities will be supervised by qualified individuals so parents will be free to participate in the auctions, Saunders said. “We’ve put a lot of emphasis on the Family Fun Day,” Ketcham said. “Yes, we want to make money, but we want to give back to the families we serve,” Saunders added. Mom’s House Will Hold Golf Event Mom’s House of Lancaster has rescheduled its 26th annual fundraising Golf Classic for Monday, June 10, to raise money for program needs at Mom’s House. The event, which was to be held on May 13 but was rained out, will still be held at the Conestoga Country Club, 1950 Stone Mill Road, Lancaster. It will include a lunch, an 18hole four-person scramble, prizes including a hole-in-one cash prize, a 19th-hole social hour, a visit by Lancaster Barnstormers mascot Cylo, a silent auction, a buffet dinner, and awards to the top golfers. Registration will begin at 11 a.m., and tee-off will be at noon. Event proceeds will promote and support Mom’s House child care and parent programs, provide state-accredited early learning education, and support single parents pursuing an education. Mwangi is a graduate of Lancaster Bible College and a boardcertified addictions counselor with 13 years of experience in the field. At CCARS, Mwangi endeavors to provide professional services in an atmosphere of Christian love and compassion. He is certified by the International Certification and Reciprocity Consortium (IC&RC), an international board that promotes uniform professional standards and quality assurance for alcohol and drug treatment professionals. Appointments may be made at CCARS on Mondays through Fridays between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. Mwangi, who is licensed to treat all types of addiction in men and women ages 15 to 65, described two types of treatment that will be offered by CCARS. The first type is outpatient treatment, which usually involves a one-hour individual session and a two-hour group session each week, in accordance with client needs. The second type is called intensive outpatient treatment. Mwangi said that intensive treatment includes multiple group sessions in addition to an individual weekly session. By the middle of April, CCARS had done 11 assessments and was treating 10 patients. Mwangi

According to Conestoga COB pastor Jere Cassel, housing the CCARS office in the church is a ministry opportunity he had been on the lookout for since arriving at the church in 2013. “In 2017, we had our first addiction workshop at the church, and that went really well,” said Cassel, referring to a two-part workshop titled “Heroin Epidemic - It’s in Your Community. It’s in Your Congregation.” “The congregation seemed to really appreciate their facility being used (in that way),” Cassel noted. More forums were held with different speakers, including Mwangi. “In the process, Samuel said, ‘Wouldn’t it be good to have a licensed addiction counselor in this area?’” recalled Cassel, who added that the church had space available in a handicapped-accessible facility. In September 2018, about 18 months after Mwangi first asked the question, the church body gave its final approval for the office to open. Cassel noted that CCARS plans to offer counseling and support groups for families and for issues related to addiction as well. “Addiction is just the primary diagnosis,” explained Mwangi. “Once people enter treatment, they may have marriage or other issues, and we can address the family needs and parenting issues as well.” Mwangi noted that anger management treatment will also be available. “A long line of emotional issues are tied to addiction,” he said. Cassel is encouraged to see the area churches coming together to fight the problem of addiction. “This shows the community that Christian churches can work together and function well,” he said, adding that the Conestoga Valley Ministerium has been supportive of the effort to establish CCARS. This summer, several youths and young adults will have the opportunity to work on coffee farms high in the mountains of the Intibuca region of Honduras or minister in the urban setting of Chamalecon on the outskirts of San Pedro Sula. Eastern Mennonite Missions (EMM) and VidaNet are partnering together for a fourweek summer discipleship training experience called Go! Honduras. In a team setting, individuals ages 16 to 21 will have two weeks of classroom and experiential discipleship training followed by two weeks of outreach - from Friday, July 5, to Thursday, July 18 - in Honduras. Orientation will begin on Friday, June 21, in Akron, and participants will arrive in Honduras by Monday, June 24. Participants will nurture their own relationships with Jesus by interacting with themes such as Christlike relationships, Holy Spirit empowerment, intimacy with God, biblical truth, evangelism and compassion, the church and the kingdom, world missions, and dying to self and living for Christ. Approximately 200 students and parents from West Fallowfield Christian School donated time on April 13 to pick up trash along local roadways and at local parks. The school works in association with Pennsylvania Department of Transportation’s annual Keep Pennsylvania Beautiful roadside trash pickup program in this endeavor. This is the 31st year that the school has participated. The event’s goals are for the students to learn the importance of taking care of God’s world and for them to give back to the community. Main St., where honor will be paid to veterans buried in the church’s historic graveyard. Local Girl Scouts will place bouquets of flowers at both cemeteries. After doubling back along East Main Street, the parade will stop at the War Memorial at the square at the intersection of Main Street and Route 896, where VFW members will lead a flag-changing ceremony. More than 70 years ago, VFW members began a tradition of honoring fallen heroes in Strasburg, said parade chair Brian Barr. When the Strubel post could no longer organize the parade and service, the Sertoma club stepped in to help. Boy Scout troops, the Strasburg Lodge of Odd Fellows, and community volunteers regularly help to place flags in Strasburg-area cemeteries to mark veterans’ final resting places. The flags are provided free of charge by the national VFW, and Korean War veteran and Sertoman Chet Lutz will coordinate their placement. OABEST Expo To Highlight Students And Community Octorara Junior-Senior High School’s seventh annual OABEST Expo will highlight the fine work being done by students alongside community groups and more. Fun and entertainment will fill the day, while visitors learn more about the possibilities available to local students. Set for Saturday, June 1, from 9:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., OABEST, which stands for Octorara Agriculture, Business, Environmental, Science and Technology, will take place on the Octorara School District campus at 226 Highland Road, Atglen. Featured at the OABEST Expo
will be food vendors, first responder demonstrations, crafts, live music, games, hayrides and many fun-filled activities. Event organizer Lisa McNamara, K-12 program administrator, said the event has grown from a small school activity to a communitywide activity. “It started off in one little hallway up by our ag tech wing. The main purpose back then was to emphasize the agriculture industry,” she said. “Last year, we brought in about 1,500 people. It has expanded to the outside, and it takes the whole high school campus. We have over 30 vendors.
It’s a K-12 community fair that partners with business and industries and shows what Octorara students do best.” This year OABEST will continue the popular 5K Octorara Angels Rainbow Run held in memory of Carly Imbierowicz and Daulton Pointek. It will start at 9 a.m. Carly and Daulton, students at OAHS, died on Nov. 22, 2014, when a broken exhaust pipe allowed carbon monoxide to leak into the car they were driving on the way home from the movies. Pequea Valley Tennis Competes In States Devon Clemmer and Brady Burns are representing Pequea Valley in the PIAA Class-AA Tennis Championships. The Pequea pair is part of a team that started the PIAA’s on May 14 with a 3-2 defeat of Lower Moreland, but they persevered and earned third place in the District Three 2A doubles brackets, qualifying for states in that category as well. Clemmer and Burns, who entered districts as the No. 3 seeded duo, suffered a 6-4, 6-2 loss to Conrad Weiser’s Nicholas Balaci and Jack Fitzpatrick in the district semis on May 11. They bounced back with a 6-3, 6-1 victory in the consolation match, topping East Pennsboro’s Nemanja Jovic and Nate Stahlman. “I was hoping it paid off in the district tournament,” head coach Eric Burns said. “It can be very difficult past the first round. I was really glad that they got the opportunity. Devon, being a senior, I wanted to see him rewarded like that.” Only two days later the Braves, as a team, were back at Hershey Racquet Club to top Lower Moreland in the first round of the PIAA team tournament.
Eric Burns spoke about the steady, workmanlike approach these teammates have. “They’re very consistent in their approach,” said the coach. “They don’t get too low when things aren’t going well or get too excited when things are going their way. They’re able to wear down other teams because other teams might not be able to bounce back from disappointments.” Though Brady Burns is only a sophomore and Clemmer a senior, it’s only the older teammate’s second year on the varsity tennis roster. What makes them a great pair is how their skills complement each other. “Devon and Brady are in their second year playing together,” the coach explained. “Last year, which was Devon’s first also, I think they each played one match with different partners and it didn’t click. I saw the levelheadedness in Devon and felt he could handle the pace at No. 1 doubles. We tried it in the next match and they’ve been teammates ever since. “Devon has good placement for his shots and Brady has more power,” continued the coach. Brady Burns used that power to
help serve PV into states in the doubles category. “I was able to get a good look at them (Jovic and Stahlman) the day before and while the semifinals were going on,” the coach said. “They were an aggressive team, wanting to win the point in one shot. Sometimes that works, and other times it doesn’t. “Brady was serving out of his mind,” added Burns. “They couldn’t break his serve. Devon had a good return game. Brady blew right threw his games.” Eric Burns noted that Balaci and Fitzpatrick, who were seeded second as a districts duo, bring a great deal of experience to the court. “They are both seniors and have been playing together for four years, which is an advantage,” Burns commented. “They’re big, strong hitters.” In Tuesday’s first round of team competition, the Braves won all three singles matches in straight sets. With the match consisting of a three-singles, two-doubles format, the doubles’ results were irrelevant. However, Pequea’s No. 1 doubles team of senior Josh Heinrich and junior Josh Gingerich played a tough match.

The World War II Oral History Club will welcome speaker Don Witmer to its meeting on Tuesday, May 28, at 7 p.m. at St. Anne’s Retirement Community, 3952 Columbia Ave., Columbia. Witmer, a Lancaster native, served as a torpedo man in the Navy aboard the U.S.S. Twiggs, which would join the Pacific Fleet in 1944. The ship was hit once, repaired, and then hit again a few months later, and it sunk enveloped in flames. Witmer was among the 188 survivors. The World War II Oral History Club meets on the last Tuesday of the month (except for December) at St. Anne’s Retirement Community. Meetings are open to the public. “They lost the first set, but won the second set 7-5,” Burns explained. “They lost the third set 10-6. It was a good doubles match.” Brady Burns, Devon Clemmer, and Hunter Winey won their singles matches in straight sets. Josh Jarvis and Seth Karg lost 6-1, 6-1 in the second doubles. Burns and Clemmer were not permitted to play as the No. 1 doubles as players cannot repeat in doubles matches once they’ve played in singles competition. “I don’t think we’ve had any boys in doubles or singles go to states. That’s huge,” said Burns. “The nice thing is that it all takes place in the same spot - Hershey Racquet Club. A lot of teams are waiting to go on, so it makes it easy to go scout other teams.”
SOFTBALL In the first round of the Lancaster-Lebanon League playoffs, the Braves came up empty against Warwick on May 11. The Warriors’ Katlyn Minney and Pequea’s Sarah Moore were locked in a pitchers’ duel that Warwick won by a 1-0 score on a fifth-inning run. Each pitcher allowed only one hit. “It was probably one of Sarah’s best games of the year,” said head coach Doug High. “She pitched a very good game.” Indeed she did, taking a no-hitter into the fifth inning. Moore, who finished with three strikeouts and was backed up with great defense on the field, allowed a single to Kenzie Stewart and a walk to Evie Clugston in the fifth. Two batters later and with courtesy runner Willow Forney at third, Emily Beale slapped a grounder to short. The play at the plate was not in time
and Warwick gave Minney all the offense she would need as she struck out 15 batters. Warwick improved to 16-2. “They’re a Class 6A team and seeded first in District Three,” High pointed out. “They’re a good team. We couldn’t figure out how to hit their pitcher.” Mackenzie Dienner’s infield single in the second inning and Camryn Bailey reaching on an error were the only base runners for the Braves, who fell to 13-8. Pequea Valley, currently fourth in the District Three Class 3A power rankings, was scheduled to start the district playoffs on Tuesday, May 21, with a home game against Trinity. “This was a good game to head into the districts,” High added. “Winning the section went by the wayside; winning the league went by the wayside. Now we’re going to try to win the district.”
