Leacock Presbyterian Church will host its summer hymn sing on the first Sunday of the month from May through September at the Old Leacock Church, Old Leacock Road and the Old Philadelphia Pike, a mile west of Intercourse. All hymn sings will begin at 7 p.m. The church will also host a free hot meal for the community on Thursday, May 30, at Leacock Presbyterian Church, 3181 Lincoln Highway East, Paradise. Dinner will be served from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. in the handicappedaccessible Smith Fellowship Hall. The menu will feature spaghetti, meatballs, tossed salad, applesauce, garlic and plain bread, and desserts. Call the church at 717-687-6619 for additional information on either event.

PVHS Class Of 2019 Prepares To Graduate By Ann Mead Ash
Commencement services for the Pequea Valley High School (PVHS) Class of 2019 will be held at Calvary Church, 1051 Landis Valley Road, Lancaster, on Friday, May 31, at 6:30 p.m. More than 115 seniors will graduate at the ceremony. The class valedictorian is Jamie Stephan, daughter of Matt and Sharlene Stephan of New Holland. Class salutatorian is Hunter Winey, son of Kevin and Lori Winey of Narvon. Stephan will speak during the ceremony. President of the Class of 2019 Devon Clemmer, son of Martin and Jan Clemmer of Gordonville, will offer opening remarks and accept diplomas for the graduating seniors. Sophia Weaver, daughter of Phillip and Betty Weaver of Gap, and Megan Rogers, daughter of Timothy and Jennifer Rogers of Gap, will also speak, and senior members of the PVHS chamber singers will perform the school song at the close of the ceremony. Stephan wrote her speech on the topic of memories.
BENEFIT EVENT
will be held on Saturday, June 1, at Paradise Park, 6 Londonvale Road, Paradise. The event will feature a 5K run at 9 a.m. as well as a coed volleyball tournament, live music, food, and other activities from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. The public is invited to attend and bring lawn chairs. “The only reason we make memories is because of the people we are with,” she noted, adding that she will encourage her classmates to forge new bonds in the years ahead. “After high school, (graduates should) keep making relationships and connections so that (they) keep making memories that will last (their) whole lives,” she said. At PVHS, Stephan has been a member of National Honor Society (NHS) and Braves Club. She has served as both secretary and president of FFA. She played field hockey throughout high school, serving as captain during her senior year. Stephan also played basketball and participated in two Tribe experience trips, traveling to Montana in 2017 and hiking along the Appalachian Trail in Maryland in 2018. Outside school, she has interned with the Paradise Sportsman’s Association Trout Hatchery. In the fall, Stephan plans to attend Unity College in Unity, Maine, where she will major in wildlife and fisheries management. “(Unity) is a small school that specializes in environmental science,” explained Stephan, who said that a natural resources class she See PVHS Class Of 2019 pg 5

the brain, and it’s a matter of learning different skills for each person depending on their situation,” said Mwangi. “Drugs (of choice) come into play from a physiological perspective, but we (at CCARS) deal with addiction as a whole.” Mwangi is the lead counselor at CCARS (Community Care and Addiction Recovery Services), one of the few licensed establishments offering addiction counseling in the northern and eastern parts of Lancaster County. Run Ride Walk Planned For Heritage Days
Paradise-area children took part in the 2018 Kids’ Fun Run, which is part of the Run Ride Walk fundraiser organized by The Together Initiative. This year’s event, which includes two bicycle rides and a 5K run/walk, along with the fun run, will take place in the Intercourse Community Park on June 15 as part of the Heritage Days Festivities.
