Pickleball tournament planned by the tennis team that could

When one hears the history of the Pequea Valley boys’ tennis program since 2022, one might wonder how Pequea Valley High School (PVHS) fields a tennis team at all. However, quite the opposite is true.

Due to construction at the school, the PVHS tennis team has not had home courts for practice or to host games on since 2022, when the current senior players were freshmen. Instead, the team practices mostly at the Paradise Park courts and at the courts at the park in Gap.

“At the beginning of the last season, we had five juniors,” noted coach Lela Fredricks.

“(The boys) recruited their friends (to join the team),” added

Lori Winey, Pequea Valley Boys Tennis Boosters member.

With all that working against the 13 team members, the team

finished the 2025 season with a 13-1 record, making it to the semifinals in league playoffs.

Both singles and doubles players

advanced to District 3. At print time, the team had won its first district match against Berks Catholic High School.

“Having only two courts has not stopped them from loving the sport,” Fredricks said. “Tennis is a mental sport, and only having

Celebrating “the joy of the journey”

“We are all in this journey together,” stated Adam Nagle, executive director of The Factory Ministries, an organization with a mission rooted in the belief that “everyone’s journey matters.” As The Factory looks forward to this year’s gala, the importance of recognizing the contributions of community members is foremost as organizers look to celebrate dignity and accomplishment.

The Together We Rise Factory

World Down Syndrome Day doesn’t celebrate our differences. World Down Syndrome Day celebrates why we’re all special.

On March 21, at 2501 Oregon Pike, GiGi’s Playhouse Lancaster added its own special twists to World Down Syndrome Day.

“Down syndrome is not a condition,” said Kevin Hewitt, president of GiGi’s Playhouse Lancaster’s seven-person advisory board. “People with Down

syndrome aren’t suffering. They’re just different. They might have challenges that other people don’t have. Sometimes they’re challenged physically. They might be challenged in their cognitive abilities.”

“In the past, people with Down syndrome tended to get pushed aside,” continued Hewitt. “General acceptance is what World Down Syndrome Day is all about. (People with Down syndrome) are often misunderstood, and sometimes they’re bullied. Our mission is to

Thaddeus Stevens College receives donation

Thaddeus Stevens College of Technology recently accepted a gift of more than $104,000 to its foundation from Mid Atlantic Machinery and its partners. The funds will provide scholarships to students in the college’s Metals Fabrication & Welding Technology associate degree program, creating pathways to high-demand careers in many industries.

Mid Atlantic Machinery, a machine tool and fabrication equipment distributor based in Lower Paxton Township, Dauphin County, has been a supporter of Thaddeus Stevens College. The company has been a longtime partner, demonstrating support through regularly hiring program graduates as well as its philanthropy.

Staff members and students accepted the donation from Mid Atlantic Machinery.

Mid Atlantic Machinery has hosted an annual golf event for the past 12 years specifically to raise funds for the college, with those dollars going directly toward the Mid Atlantic Machinery Scholarship. The company has now raised more than

$227,000 for scholarships at the college.

The company has hired graduates not only from the college’s metals fabrication and welding program, but also its electro-mechanical technology track and business administration major.

Its leadership also encourages its customers to hire graduates from Thaddeus Stevens College as well. Jeff Tankesley, the CFO at Mid Atlantic Machinery, also serves on the board of trustees for Thaddeus Stevens Foundation.

change the way the world views Down syndrome.”

That Friday in late March at the Lancaster location of GiGi’s Playhouse Down Syndrome Achievement Center, World Down Syndrome Day was celebrated from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. and was marked by discovery, fellowship and inclusion. As part of the festivities, a group of GiGi’s Playhouse clients visited Lancaster County Christian School and a group of Lancaster-Lebanon IU13 students and Pennsylvania state Rep. Nikki Rivera visited GiGi’s Playhouse and toured the Manheim Township facilities.

“It was just a festive day, a day of awareness and celebration,” said Hewitt. “The playhouse was decorated with balloons and glitter. Music was playing. Different

families were coming in. Grandparents were joining with families. It was loud, fun and exciting.”

In all, about 150 people visited GiGi’s Playhouse Lancaster on World Down Syndrome Day. The only Down syndrome achievement center in Pennsylvania, GiGi’s Playhouse Lancaster currently serves about 530 families from Lancaster County and beyond.

Operated through the work of one paid staff member and more than 100 volunteers, GiGi’s Playhouse Lancaster offers services like career development, tutoring and therapeutic and educational programs free of charge to participants.

“We have new families coming in all the time, and they’re not sure how they’re going to fit in,” said Hewitt. “It’s encouraging for parents and grandparents to know there’s a place like GiGi’s Playhouse. Some parents just sit and talk about what they’re going through.”

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, one out of 700 babies in the United States is born with Down syndrome. About 6,000 babies are born with Down syndrome in the United States each year.

Down syndrome is named for British physician John Langdon Down, who first

described the condition in 1866.

“The general public really doesn’t understand people with Down syndrome,” said Hewitt. “What they’re seeing is someone who looks somewhat different.

Our people with Down syndrome are out in the community. They work at all kinds of places. We don’t facilitate them getting jobs, but we prepare them. They’re becoming members of the community. I think there’s some misunderstanding about the capabilities of people with Down syndrome.”

One of 62 GiGi’s Playhouses across the country, the Lancaster location opened in 2020, serving 100 families affected by Down syndrome. Now, GiGi’s Playhouse Lancaster offers 18 programs to families.

caster, which moved into its current more spacious building in April of 2024, is financed through four major fundraisers throughout the year and some individual donations. The organization is currently exploring the grant application process.

“That growth trend is continuing,” said Hewitt. “Lots of generous people and generous businesses believe in what we do. Every week another new family comes into the playhouse. They see all the programs, and we tell them, ‘We’re here for you.’ We’re always accepting donations, and we always want people to volunteer. We love to give tours of our playhouse. We also love to give presentations to businesses about what we do.”

River Discovery boat tours planned

Susquehanna National Heritage Area (SNHA) will offer one-hour River Discovery boat tours on Thursdays to Sundays from June through September. SNHA will welcome guests aboard the Chief Uncas, a historic electric-powered boat, for tours on the Lake Clarke reach of the Susquehanna River. Tours will embark from the dock at SNHA’s Zimmerman Center for Heritage, 1706 Long Level Road, Wrightsville.

On the tours, guides will share stories of the Susquehanna River’s history and heritage. Up to 22 passengers may participate in each outing. In addition, themed boat tours will be offered throughout the

tour season, highlighting stories of the river’s Civil War, Native American, and haunted heritage.

There is a fee, with discounts for youths age 17 and under and for seniors.

To purchase tickets, visit https://susqnha.org/ programs/boat-tours/.

The Chief Uncas was built in 1912 for Adolphus Busch, who used it for cruises at his summer estate on Otsego Lake in Cooperstown, N.Y., the headwaters of the Susquehanna River.

SNHA purchased the Chief Uncas in 2021. To learn more about the history of the boat, visit https:// susqnha.org/wp-content /uploads/2024/02/Chief -Uncas-Brochure-2-24.pdf.

two courts, they could have thought they would (not have a good season), but tennis is all about how your thoughts impact your actions.”

“It’s not recommended that a team play on only two courts, but they have survived and thrived,” stated Winey.

To help fund costs associated with travel and gear for the team, the booster club has organized a pickleball tournament fundraiser on Saturday, May 31, beginning at 7:30 a.m. in Salis -

bury Township Community Park, commonly known as Gap Park, 750 White Horse Road, Gap. The tournament will be for doubles only, and there is a cost to take part. Area residents who wish to play in the tournament are encouraged to register by Tuesday, May 27, by calling 717-875-3048. More information may be found on the home page at https:// pvhs.pequeavalley.org.

Winey said the idea of a pickleball fundraiser had been discussed for some time. “When we got talking

about it, I asked the coach, ‘Can we do it?’” recalled Winey, who said that team member Nolan Stoltzfus and his father, Darryl, who have competed in pickleball events, stepped up immediately and offered to run the tournament. PVHS tennis team members will help to facilitate the tournament, and some may play if they are needed. Winey added that pickleball is popular with senior citizens. “Darryl was thinking there are a lot of avid players that will come out,” she reported. Pickleball is a sport that combines elements of tennis, badminton, and pingpong. It is played on a court the same size as a badminton court with a modified tennis net. Equipment includes a paddle and a plastic ball with holes in it.

The PV Boys Tennis Booster Club has been providing meals and lunches for team members as they travel to away games. They also purchased windbreakers for the boys to wear during this windy tennis season. “We had to outfit them, and we wanted them to be uniform,” reported Winey. “We didn’t have a home court advantage.” In addition, the team will lose seven seniors to graduation this spring. “We don’t want to leave the team with the funds depleted,”

explained Winey. “They will need windbreakers and food. We like to keep them hydrated because sometimes matches go very long.” Fredricks added that she does not expect the team to have home courts until fall of 2026 at the earliest.

As the boosters look to build funds for future teams, Fredricks would like to see younger boys come out for tennis in the next year. She hopes the news about this year’s success will appeal to underclassmen. Calling the team “amazing,” Fredricks shared that outlook has been as important as chalking up wins. “(The team) has had such a phenomenal year,” she shared. “Their attitude has been more impressive than their 13-1 record.”

Assistant coach Jason Graybill agreed, noting that the team members are willing to take part in any fundraiser that is suggested. “It’s something to say about the guys that they want to do fundraising,” he stated. “You don’t have to twist their arms because they want to support (the team).”

Looking ahead, Winey said the team members hope to leave a legacy for future teams. “They really want to see the next generation,” she said. “That’s their heart.”

The Factory Ministries

Ministries Gala Fundraiser will be held on Tuesday, June 10, beginning at 5 p.m. at The Expo Center at Wyndham, 2300 Lincoln Highway East, Lancaster. A number of activities are planned for the event, including time to network, bid on silent auction items, enjoy a dinner buffet, and visit a cash bar. At 7:30 p.m., a program featuring a speaker, live auction, and donation appeal will be held. The live appeal will be presented by auctioneer Tim Keller with the Fundraising Auction Team of Keller Auctioneers. Following that, attendees will have a chance to enjoy dessert. Live music for the gala will be provided by the Vivace String Quartet,

known for playing contemporary music on a variety of string instruments. The dinner buffet will include chicken, pasta, and roasted vegetables.

Christine Schneider with Alegre Events is helping to plan the gala. She noted that organizers are hoping for a comfortable evening where guests may venture outside the main room to mingle near a water wall and around fire pits.

“People will be able to enjoy desserts and coffee outside,” she noted.

The silent auction will feature more than 100 items. According to Ellie Green, communications director with The Factory Ministries, the silent auction will include a fourweek billboard advertise -

ment - valued at more than $2,400 - branded dispensers, and other products from Bevanda, local gift baskets, and experiences.

Larger items will be sold at live auction.

The evening is billed as an opportunity to “hear stories of the lives transformed through the empowerment, resources, and community provided by our donors. Nagle noted that the vision is to acknowledge and celebrate how major donors have contributed to reaching Factory goals of connecting people with resources.

“We are together in this work,” said Nagle. “The heart of it is that things we accomplish are things (our guests at the gala) accomplish.” Among the things The Factory could not make happen without area donors are a crisis housing facility at The Factory, the Pequea Valley Early Learning Center and Braves Learning Center, and the Workforce Advocacy program.

how another county service provider had recently complimented the organization. “He said, ‘As a whole, the way you interact and treat people is dignified,’” reported Nagle. “I think that’s what we’re celebrating. Our staff and the community bring a dignity to the underresourced. There’s a love and appreciation of the humanness.” Nagle added that The Factory believes there are six primary resources - relational, emotional, financial, spiritual, physical, and intellectual. “We are built on that,” he said, noting that a state of poverty is defined as the degree to which someone is going without resources.

Green said that the plan is to hold a fundraiser while conveying appreciation for the good work that has been done. “It’s a celebration that will raise money for the mission,” she noted.

“It’s the joy of journeying together,” added Nagle.

Coast Guard urges people to practice boating safety

In connection with National Safe Boating Week - Saturday to Friday, May 17 to 23 - the Coast Guard urges all Americans to familiarize themselves with best practices for a safe boating experience. Everyone in the boat should always wear a U.S. Coast Guard-approved life jacket appropriate for the water activity. People should file a float plan with someone they trust; the

plan should detail where boaters are going and when they expect to return.

Those enjoying an outing on a boat should have a reliable means of communication for their area, be it a marine radio or a cell phone.

Alcohol is the leading contributing factor in fatal boating accidents, so it is recommended that people do not consume alcohol while boating. Anyone who would like

to obtain a boat operation certificate or who wants to brush up on his or her skills may consider taking a boating skills course. Local Coast Guard Auxiliary flotillas conduct Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission-approved boating safety courses throughout the year.

People are also encouraged to schedule a vessel safety check. Coast Guard Auxiliary flotillas conduct these checks free of charge

at any time throughout the year.

The U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary is the uniformed volunteer component of the United States Coast Guard created by an act of Congress in 1939. The Auxiliary supports the Coast Guard in nearly all its missions except law enforcement and military operations. For more information, visit www.cgaux.org.
