Funding Educational Enrichment he Pequea Valley Education Foundation (PVEF) runs two yearly grant cycles with a goal of distributing all the funds the organization takes in. According to Amy Koberstein, Pequea Valley High School (PVHS) assistant principal and member of the PVEF board, the organization raised more than $20,000 by participating in the Extraordinary Give in the fall of 2021, and most of that has been given away. “It is all budgeted to be spent,” remarked Koberstein. One grant that has become a tradition with PVEF is helping to fund the Paradise Super Outdoor Science Day, which is held each spring at Paradise Park for all second-grade students at Paradise Elementary School. The grant essentially brings a science museum to the students. “(Staff members) bring interactive, outdoor learning experiences to Paradise Park,” explained Koberstein. “(This gives learners) the ability and opportunity to apply science skills and knowledge that has been

According to Olivia Imchen, center manager, Pregnancy Resources at Cornerstone, 5380 Lincoln Highway, Gap, having the organization’s baby boutique in the basement of the main building, a remodeled mansion located in the center of Gap, was not convenient for everyone. “For women who are pregnant or just gave birth, there are a lot of steps to go up and down,” noted Imchen, who added that the space was also crowded. Starting in February, Imchen was able to change that for Cornerstone clients by moving the boutique into the carriage house, located behind the main building. Amish Home Outdoor Classics of East Earl is donating and installing shelving that will help Imchen to better organize the boutique. See Cornerstone pg 2

Social worker Meredith Burnette wrote a grant for an attendance incentive for middle and high school students. “(Burnette) has created an attendance initiative program that (a student must) agree to participate in,” said Koberstein, who noted that students are asked to join the program based on attendance issues during the prior school year. “(Burnette) and her interns created a support group that meets weekly

and reviews attendance problems and strengths,” explained Koberstein, who noted that students receive gift cards when they reach attendance milestones. One partial grant will aid students who find it hard to sit still in a chair for long periods. The grant will help fund attachments with springs in them to help keep students more focused and engaged. The new Pequea Valley Youth Football Association (PVYFA), which will teach football skills and sportsmanship to boys and girls ages 7 to 13 in the Pequea Valley School District, received a partial grant to

help pay for new equipment to replace outdated gear. More than 65 area youths have expressed interest in the program. Koberstein noted that the Extraordinary Give has been the organization’s primary fundraiser for several years now. “We meet our needs and very few grants are turned down,” she said, adding that the rubric for approving grants is based on seven criteria that rate the requests’ contributions to the educational experience. PA MEDI volunteers donate at least four hours weekly in private faceto-face sessions. Counselors answer questions about Medicare eligibility and enrollment, Parts A and B and Medigap benefits, Part D prescription drug plans, PACE and other financial assistance programs, Medicare Advantage Plans, and more. Skinner noted that volunteers will complete a training course of 10 online modules with testing. “Then there’s another online training (program) with the regional coordinator,” Skinner added. She noted that people who enjoy reading make good volunteers.

Computer literacy is a must, according to Skinner, who said that counselors come from all walks of life and that former teachers, nurses, and lawyers are currently volunteering. “These are people who have worked and want to continue doing something that utilizes their brainpower,” she said. “Often people who have retired need to have purpose.” Skinner said she would like to see more men join the volunteer force. challenge of the work. Foster, who worked for an orthopedic surgeon, said that knowing the provider’s side of Medicare helps her help others. She also enjoys the sense of accomplishment. “It’s satisfying because you have people who just appreciate what you do,” she said. “You help them as best you can, and you see the stress lift.” Skinner noted that the counselors offer a unique perspective to those they help. “We provide objective answers and comparisons of different insurance plans. We never point them in a direction.” The free counseling service has been available for more than 30 years. “(Sites) were established as State Health Insurance Assistance Program - SHIP,” said Skinner, who added that more than 50 SHIPs were offered across the state. All proceeds will be used to benefit the library, including the upcoming Summer Reading Program. In addition to the plant sale and chicken barbecue, the Friends group holds other fundraisers for the library throughout the year, including its annual golf tournament and book sales. The Friends also provide volunteers to operate the Read Moore Book Store, located in the lower level of the library. Lancaster County Art Association (LCAA), 149 Precision Ave., Strasburg, will hold its Spring Membership Show from Sunday, May 1, to Thursday, June 2. The show may be viewed on Thursdays through Saturdays from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. and on Sundays 1 to 4 p.m.

LCAA will hold a plant sale on Saturday, May 7, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Attendees may purchase plants, including perennials, annuals, and shrubs, such as mini crepe myrtles, as well as birdhouses by local artists and a variety of garden sculptures and outdoor features. All proceeds will benefit the LCAA.

Highlighting important moments in the Rev. Billy Graham’s ministry, it includes a look at the history behind

As the Supreme Court of Pennsylvania prepares to celebrate its 300th anniversary, students across the state are invited to participate in the historic occasion by participating in an essay and coloring contest. Both contests are free and open to Pennsylvania students, including those in public, private, charter, cybercharter, or home school. The deadline for entries is Friday, May 6. The coloring contest is open to students ages 5 to 11 and will give young students the opportunity to create their own judge. After printing the cartoon judge cutouts, students can choose which judge they want to color and design using their creativity as their guide. The essay contest is open to all students in grades three through 12, with essays being judged on creativity, overall quality, and adherence to the questions. For grades three through five, the question is “ Why is the Pennsylvania Supreme Court important?” For grades six through 12, the question is “Which Pennsylvania Supreme Court Justice inspires you and why?” Students and parents are encouraged to submit photo entries on Twitter by tagging @PACourts and using #Supreme300 or by mail following the instructions outlined below. Landis Adult Day Services (ADS) will host its 31st annual Benefit Golf Outing on Friday, June 3, at Foxchase Golf Club, 300 Stevens Road, Stevens. The Golf Outing will have a scramble format with shotgun starts at 7:30 a.m. and 1 p.m. Food and drinks will be provided on the course as well as lunch or dinner after the round of golf. Participants are also eligible to receive prizes. All proceeds from the event will support programming and scholarships for individuals who participate in the Landis ADS program. Landis ADS provides care for aging adults who have experienced lifeand health-changing circumstances and need a safe, stimulating place to go during the day. Nurses, activity coordinators, and other professionals

are on-site to provide care. Among the participants at Landis ADS is Joel. Joel formerly drove a tractor-trailer, sometimes hauling loads from Florida to Canada, and he also collected cars. When he was 1,000 miles short of reaching 3 million miles of safe trucking, he encountered a health problem that resulted in the loss of his license. Joel was not coping well with being home as he missed working and the open road. Eventually, his wife found Landis ADS,

and Joel began attending and making friends. While he still misses driving a tractor-trailer, at ADS, Joel can reminisce with new friends and create new memories in a fun, supportive environment. Herb And Garden Faire Scheduled After a two-year COVID-19 hiatus, the annual Herb and Garden Faire at the Landis Valley Village and Farm Museum, Landis Valley Road, off Oregon Pike/Route 272, Lancaster, will return from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Friday, May 6, and Saturday, May 7. The event will take place rain or shine on the grounds of the museum. In preparation for the event, the Landis Valley Heirloom Seed Project and its volunteers have planted and transplanted thousands of heirloom vegetable and perennial seeds and seedlings. These plants will be available for sale to gardeners during the Faire. Visitors will be able to pur-

A total of over 200 students from 23 Lancaster County schools entered projects in the 2022 North Museum Science and Engineering Fair for judging by 82 STEM-related professionals from dozens of local companies. VisionCorps Information Free Knotweed Program Sessions Available Planned

The American Red Cross encourages community members to make blood or platelet donation a part of their spring plans. Donated blood has a limited shelf life, so supplies must be constantly replenished. Donors can make an appointment by downloading the American Red Cross Blood Donor app, visiting www.red crossblood.org or calling 800733-2767. To donate blood, individuals need to bring a blood donor card or driver’s license or two other forms of identification. Individuals who are age 17, weigh at least 110 pounds, and

VisionCorps offers free informational programs to organizations, eye doctors, and employers about its services. Both in-person and virtual formats are available, and the programs can be tailored to the needs of the audience. Topics include vision problems, VisionCorps’ mission and services, tips for living independently with blindness or low vision, and the benefits of employing people with low vision. Sessions may also include training for employees who work with individuals
