As part of a collaboration between Christiana Parks and Recreation and the Sadsbury Friends Meeting, not only will community members be able to learn about the history of Pysanky eggs, but they will get to try their hand at creating one.
The two-part program about Pysanky eggs, which are Ukrainian Easter eggs colored with intricate designs and patterns, will begin with a lecture on Saturday, April 26, from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. at Sadsbury Friends Meeting, 1089 Simmontown Road, Gap, as part of its speaker series.
Guest presenter Chrystyna Prokopvych, curator of the Manor College Ukrainian Heritage Studies Center, will provide information about the history, legends and symbolism of the egg.
Part two of the program will be held on Saturday, May 3, from

wax prevents the dye from coloring the parts of the egg covered by it.
“You have a regular white egg, and you have a tool; it looks like a pen, but it is filled with melted wax, not ink,” she explained. “If you want an area on the egg to be triangles and you want those in white, you draw with the pen on the egg where you want it white. The next lightest color available would be yellow, and you dip the egg in yellow dye. The whole egg will be yellow expect the area where there is wax.”
She said that the process is repeated with various colors. “It’s layers of dye and layers of wax, and by the end, the whole egg will be covered with wax, and you melt the wax off, and you have the design of the egg,” said Hottenstein.
According to a history of the Pysanky egg provided by Hottenstein, the creation of the eggs started before the 10th century,

Refined for a reason

Ryan Forbes still recalls the moment in jail in 2003 when he first gave his life to the Lord. In 2004, in state prison, Ryan prayed again, asking God to show him His purpose for Ryan’s life. “I thought I heard Him say, ‘My son, you will preach to the multitudes,’” Ryan recalled.
On April 5, Ryan Forbes Ministries launched at Petra Church. The mission statement for the ministry is “Redeeming and restoring lives through the power and love of Jesus.” The event followed the culmination
of 20 years of what Ryan called “learning and growing and being refined.”
“This kind of all came about because for years I have had a burning desire to get the story out about how Jesus can save lives,” said Ryan. “I like to teach, speak, share my heart, and communicate what I believe to be His heart for other people,” said Ryan. “On the journey, I have often felt called to a missional itinerant speaking ministry,” shared Ryan.
Ryan and his family had considered becoming full-time missionaries with Preparing the

“If you’re looking for a getaway that’s within driving distance of home, this is the perfect place to find it,” said Wendy Royal, organizer of the PA Family Travel Fair. “Come here and see what’s right in your backyard.”
The PA Family Travel Fair will be held from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, May 3, at Spooky Nook Sports Complex, 75 Champ Blvd., Manheim.
The event will feature free entry and free parking.
Organized by Where & When Pennsylvania, a free seasonal travel magazine, the PA Family Travel Fair will spotlight more than 50 vendors.
“We will have destination marketing organizations from all over the state,” Royal shared.
“Probably the farthest one is VisitErie or Warren County, but we have representatives from across Pennsylvania, from northeast Pennsylvania to Bucks County and the Laurel Highlands.”

Way Ministries in Kenya, Africa, but when Ryan’s wife, Caitlyn, was not completely comfortable with moving abroad, it was time to rethink the situation.
“We stepped back from that commitment,” said Ryan, who was coached during the decision-making process by his 10-member mission support team at Petra Church. “I had breakfast with (Petra equipping pastor) Brian Flewelling,” recalled Ryan. “He was processing with me, and he said, ‘I understand you’re not going with your family, but that doesn’t mean that’s the end of it,’” stated Ryan. Flewelling said, “You have a call on your life.”
After much thought and prayer, a new plan was developed. “Instead of the whole family hopping on a plane,” Ryan said, “maybe it’s me stretching my legs and doing three or four international trips a year and working with other ministries to share my story and preach the Gospel.” Ryan’s team coached him into looking to create a support base of people who
want to partner with him to enable him to share his testimony and expertise. “The hope is in a few years to grow a big-enough support base to do that full time, whether that’s (in the U.S.) or internationally,” said Ryan.
Ryan holds a Bachelor of Science in psychology with an addictions and recovery specialization as well as a degree in religion from Liberty University. He has worked with several local ministries, including The Potter’s House and CrossNet Ministries.
Ryan was in prison ministries for several years, and he also wrote a book, “Unchained,” with police officer Wendell Metzler about their unlikely friendship after Metzler arrested Ryan a number of times. After Metzler
died of cancer in 2021, Ryan took a respite from sharing his testimony, but now he has two upcoming mission trips planned. During the summer, he will fly to Kenya for a twoweek leaders conference with Preparing the Way Ministries. “I have been going to that annually,” noted Ryan, who is especially excited about the second event - a leaders conference in Peru in the fall. “It will be (held) in two different cities, so we will be running it twice,” pointed out Ryan. “They requested my story specifically because of the addictions focus.”
Ryan reported that the addictions problem in this area of Peru is such that a speaker with his qualifications and experience was sought. “My degree is in

that. My life experience is in that,” said Ryan. Now, Ryan is looking to partner with those who have a heart for his ministry. “I want to get the message out,” said Ryan. “It’s always boiling inside me, and I think I’m ready to share the ongoing testimony of Christ’s life in us.” Readers who would like to learn more about Ryan’s ministry may call 717-9178496 or email office.rfmin istries@gmail.com.

Community will remember Ruggieri by not running
BY GEORGE DEIBEL
Stephanie Horst said to understand what the third annual Pete Ruggieri Memorial 0.0 Un-Run is about, you must first know a little about Ruggieri.
Ruggieri, who passed away in March 2023, was a charitable, larger-than-life personality who insisted that everyone around him was having a good time, Horst said.
Fun and philanthropy are the focus of the Un-Run, which will be held Saturday, April 26, from 2 to 5 p.m. at Phantom Power, 121 W. Frederick St., Millersville.
Doors will open at 2 p.m., and the “race” will start at 3 p.m., followed by a meal at 3:05 p.m.
To purchase tickets, go to www.eventbrite.com and type “Pete Ruggieri” in the search bar with “Millersville, PA” listed as the location. Attendees must be 21 years old or over, unless accompanied by a parent or legal guardian.
The registration fee includes entry to the event, a barbecue meal, a numbered race bib, a “0.0” sticker, a chance to win door prizes, yard games, table games, and “general frivolity,” said Horst.
The Fat Is Where It’s At Barbeque, an award-winning competitive barbecue team, will provide the buffet meal, which will include pulled pork, pulled chicken, macaroni and cheese, smoked beans, and coleslaw.
Participants are asked to come dressed in their most outrageous activewear; a prize will be awarded to the best-dressed runner.
The Un-Run will have a

Attendees may sample small bites and beverages. The event will also include a reception to celebrate the opening of “Ikebana” (“Giving Life to Flowers”) by Lancaster AAPI artists from 6 to 8 p.m. in the Regitz Gallery. Experience the cultural richness of the local Asian American and Pacific

Islander community through a collaborative art exhibit showcasing the artists’ interpretations of “Ikebana,” a Japanese art form that focuses on harmony and minimalism. The exhibit will be on display until Friday, May 30. This event is free and open to the public. No tickets are required.

hit and his health declined. “I just thought it was such a great idea, we had to make it happen,” Horst said.
The runners will stand behind a long tape like the kind commonly found at the finish line of marathons. Then Horst will use a megaphone to announce, “Are you ready to not run? On your mark, get set ...” and then blow a whistle. Everyone will take one step forward to break through the tape. That will be the end of the “run” and the beginning of the hijinks.
The event’s activities will be based on Ruggieri’s recurring jokes. There will be a scrapple toss to represent one of his favorite foods. Ruggieri created a Facebook page devoted to scrapple, and a Photoshopped image of scrapple ice cream went viral. The gag got so popular that a small creamery in Harrisburg actually produced scrapple ice cream, and Ruggieri appeared on television news when the debatably delectable dessert debuted at Broad Street Market.
There will be a tabletop horse racing game and a contest to guess the number of bricks in the “Gap Lighthouse,” which is how Ruggieri referred to
the Gap Town Clock. Proceeds from the Un-Run will benefit Jefferson Health in Ruggieri’s memory. The money will go into a fund managed by oncologist Marcia Brose and will support research and development of treatment options for thyroid cancer patients like Ruggieri.
Ruggieri, of Lancaster, was heavily involved in Masonic organizations and is perhaps best known as the founder of the Santa Stumble, which has raised more than $200,000 for various charities in its first 12 years. An animal lover, Ruggieri initially donated the proceeds to the Lancaster Police Foundation for the horses and dogs in the Lancaster Mounted Patrol and K-9 unit. Since the mounted patrol is now disbanded, the money goes to a variety of local charities.
The Santa Stumble is held in Lancaster city on the second Saturday of December. It started when Ruggieri and a few friends embarked on a bar crawl while dressed in Christmas-themed outfits and has grown exponentially, Horst said. “He was absolutely floored with how
Un-Runners will receive a sticker with Pete Ruggieri’s likeness and the race distance.
it took off,” said Horst. “Of course everyone had a blast, because that’s what happens when you go to an event Pete plans,” Horst said. Now, Horst, John Hockley, and Joe Gebhard plan the event, which is expected to draw approximately 2,000 participants this year.
Ruggieri also created a satirical Facebook account called People of Lancaster, where he provided humorous commentary about local news items. He established the 505 Happy Hour Club, which met every Wednesday.
“Pete was a natural leader and a big idea person,” Horst said. “Honoring Pete and having fun is one and the same. He personally would see to it that everybody who showed up had fun. Anytime we plan something in his memory, we have to make sure it’s fun, because that’s what he was all about.”

“We have some historical railroads coming,” Royal remarked. “We have amusement parks, museums and historic sites.”
Many of the vendors will feature giveaways for items ranging from day passes to overnight trips.
The grand prize children’s giveaway will be an eight pack of all-day passes
to DelGrosso’s Amusement Park & Laguna Splash Water Park in Tipton.
The grand prize giveaway, sponsored by Visit Potter-Tioga, will feature a four-night stay for four at the Penn Wells Lodge in Wellsboro, plus vouchers for covered wagon tours, gift cards to local businesses and spending money for the trip.
Topaz Balloons will be
on-site providing balloon art from 10 a.m. to noon, and face painting will be offered by Jain Falcon from 1 to 3 p.m.
At noon, Clyde Peeling’s Reptiland will present an educational show.
“(The Clyde Peeling’s representative) usually brings big snakes and other reptiles,” Royal said. “Last year, he brought a baby crocodile. His show is very popular.”
Mascots - including Echo the bat from Lincoln Caverns and Whisper Rocks as well as Johnny the Long John from Achenbach’s Pastries - will also roam the event and will be available for pictures.

Royal initiated the idea for the PA Family Travel Fair in 2017 when she realized the wealth of vacation resources right in our state.
“The state of PA markets to outside areas,” she said.
“We’re not going to see commercials for our own state. I want to give people new ideas of places they can visit in their home state.”
According to the most recent statistics, tourism brings in $76 billion to the Pennsylvania economy, Royal said.
“That’s ‘billion’ with a ‘b.’ Tourism is a big economic driver,” she stated.
“It’s $4.7 billion in state and local taxes, and that’s huge. We want to keep those tax dollars here. We want to encourage people to keep their money in the state.”
And if you don’t want to travel far this summer,
don’t worry. Local attractions will be represented at the fair as well. Elizabethtown-based Stone Gables Estate, Cherry Crest Adventure Farm in Ronks and Oregon Dairy in Lititz are just a few of the local participants.
Over the years, Royal has enjoyed watching people return annually to the event to learn more about what’s in our state, and she likes seeing people discover something new.
“I think people are shocked at all the things you can do in Pennsylvania,” she said. “People don’t know that Jimmy Stewart was from Indiana, Pa., and there is a whole museum dedicated to him there. They do an ‘It’s a Wonderful Life’ festival in the winter. … We have beaches in Pennsylvania, too. Presque Isle Park in Erie has 13 beaches, including Sunset Beach, which has the most gorgeous sunsets you’ll ever see.”
Above all, she noted, the PA Family Travel Fair is a family-friendly, fun way to learn more and find vacation ideas.
“There’s no selling, no pressure,” Royal said. “You don’t have to buy anything or sign up for anything. Just come, have a conversation with the vendors and pick up information to start planning your next trip.”
