White Horse Fire and EMS Prepares for Gallop

White Horse Fire and EMS Company will host its fourth annual White Horse Gallop 5K, 10K and community day on Saturday, May 23.

The event will feature a 10K and 5K cross-country run, as well as a fun run and several free community activities. It will take place at the fire station, 111 White Horse Road, Gap. There is a cost to register.

The race has become known for its unique start, which features a white horse opening the gallop. The horse comes from a local farm.

“When we decided to call it a White Horse Gallop, we felt like we needed a horse,” said Alvin Stoltzfus, one of the organizers of the event. “I know (the farmer) spent some time training the horse ... he takes a lot of pride in it.”

On the day of the race, registration will begin at 6:30 a.m. The fun run will start at 8 a.m., followed by the 10K at 8:30 a.m. and the 5K at 8:35 a.m.

Both the 5K and 10K routes remain unchanged. As in the past, runners will leave the fire company and travel south on Route 897 and return on Route 340 (Old Philadelphia Pike).

Sections of both roads will be closed during

Scouting America’s current flag offers a fresh, clean look that features a small image of an eagle and the colors of our country. It symbolizes the morals, commitment and tradition that Scouting America stands for.

In this particular instance, the passing, raising and lowering of that Scouting America flag represents the role that Scouting has played in the history of our nation.

“There are pride and meaning attached to all flags, and I think that’s true of the Scouting America flag,” said Logan Ginder, the marketing and membership coordinator of Scouting America’s Pennsylvania Dutch Council. “It represents Scouting and the state of Pennsylvania. I think it’s important just because we are Scouting America, and we’re one of the largest youth programs across the country. Scouting America has been present for a long time, and the mission hasn’t changed: for youths to become leaders and members of communities and for instilling ethics into our youths.”

The gallop will feature its signature white horse.

“It was designed to unite the 67 counties in Pennsylvania,” said Ginder, “and celebrate America’s 250th anniversary and Scouting’s commitment to our community. Community pride was the vibe, and it came at a time when it may be more important than ever to show community pride. There was also a little bit of national pride involved.”

During the ceremony, members of the Pennsylvania Dutch Council raised and lowered the Scouting America flag at the flagpole at the Lancaster County Courthouse. The celebration also included addresses and remarks from local dignitaries and government officials.

About 30 individuals attended the Flags Across the Commonwealth ceremony, including members of Scouting units Pack 93 of Lititz, Troop and Pack 76 from Quarryville and Troop 56 of Strasburg.

“It was definitely a special event for the 250th anniversary of our country,” said Ginder, a resident of Elizabethtown. “It’s not something we do every year. What it should mean to the

Scouts is a sense of pride in their organization.”

As part of the Flags Across the Commonwealth program, the Scouting America flag’s journey began in Philadelphia on Feb. 8, the birthday of Scouting America, formerly known as Boy Scouts of America. After it was received in Lancaster and signed by participants at the local ceremony, the Scouting America flag was passed on to Pennsylvania Dutch Council members in Lebanon, who conducted a similar local service at the Lebanon County Courthouse on Feb. 18.

“Scouting is alive and active in our communities,” he added. “Some people don’t realize we’re still out there. We haven’t fallen by the wayside. We’re still a very prominent program.”

“What we’re hoping for with the whole event across the state is to celebrate our enduring ideals of freedom and civic pride,” said Ginder. “We’re reaffirming values that continue to strengthen the United States. Hopefully, the takeaway from the Scouts is that it’s important for them to be a part of their communities. It’s a celebration

“We provide Scouting programs to any and all youths in Lancaster and Lebanon counties,” said Ginder. “We’re preparing youths to make ethical decisions through Scouting values.”

One of 20 in the state, the Pennsylvania Dutch Council was chartered in 1971. Currently, more than 2,000 youths - boys and girls between the ages of 5 and 17 - are involved with Scouting America in the Pennsylvania Dutch Council.

“They’re members of our community,” said Ginder. “They’re youths we strive to serve through our programs. They’re our

The Pennsylvania Dutch Council, which is headquartered at 245 Bloomfield Drive, Suite 212-218, Lititz, is funded through the generosity of donors, partners and business sponsors. The local council employs 11 workers, some of whom are part time, and benefits from contributions from 1,200 volunteers, many of whom work directly with Scouts.

“(Scouting is) constantly growing and changing,” said Ginder. “They’re adding more programs and more merit badges. Our facilities are being updated on a regular basis. They’re more effective programs for our youths. Our end goal is to provide quality programs to the youths in our council.”

Taste of New Holland Deliciously Funds Critical Community Services

Think of it this way: you’ve got to eat anyway. You might as well give the household cook a break, a day off.

Garden Spot Fire Rescue Station 39 and A Taste of New Holland have got you covered. You could even make it a day date or a date night if you so choose.

“It’s a way to get the community together, but we’re mainly doing it as a fundraiser,” said Wes Kopp, a Garden Spot Fire Rescue Station 39 captain. “It’s just nice to make the community happy. Everyone appreciates it.”

For local residents, frequenting A Taste of New Holland is also a great way to support Garden Spot Fire Rescue, which provides valuable services to the local community.

This year’s edition of the annual event will be conducted from 5 to 9 p.m. on Friday, April 24, and from noon to 8 p.m. on Saturday, April 25, in the parking lot of Garden Spot Fire Rescue’s headquarters, 339 E. Main St., New Holland. A Taste of New Holland is free to attend, everyone is welcome and donations toward the fire company will be accepted.

Parking for A Taste of New Holland will be available at St. Stephen Reformed Church, 249 E. Main St., New Holland, and golf cart shuttle service to the event will be provided.

“It’s a springtime fair,” said Kopp. “I just want people to come out and support their local fire company. Every little bit helps.”

A Taste of New Holland’s namesake originates from the dozen food trucks that will be on hand, providing patrons with a wide assortment of delicious hot and

cold dishes. Many of the food trucks are operated by local owners, and most of them are native to the New Holland area.

Friday evening at A Taste of New Holland will feature bingo, other games, and prizes donated by local businesses and individuals. Saturday is country day at the festival and will include a live broadcast by radio station WIOV, country line dancing featuring Boot Scootin Becky from 2 to 4 p.m., and a performance by Clifton Bryan Country beginning at 5 p.m.

For the kids, A Taste of New Holland will offer fire engine rides complete with sirens and flashing lights. Miniature golf will be available to play for kids of all ages.

“I like the small-town community part of it,” said Kopp, a resident of New Holland.

More than 500 residents of New Holland and surrounding areas are expected to attend A Taste of New Holland. Last year, Garden Spot Fire Rescue made $14,000 from the event.

“We’re looking to make more this year,” said Kopp. “The money goes into a general fund and goes toward purchasing gear and tools. We need to do our jobs.”

A Taste of New Holland was started in 2020.

“It began with food trucks in our parking lot,” said Kopp, “and everyone seemed to love it. Since then, we started getting live music and we added bingo.”

Garden Spot Fire Rescue is operated exclusively by volunteers and does not employ workers. The organization is also fully funded by private and individual donations and fundraisers.

Garden Spot Fire Rescue also conducts an annual fund drive through the United States Postal Service, an annual flower sale in April and an annual Christmas tree sale around the holidays.

“A Taste of New Holland is our biggest fundraiser,” said Kopp.

In addition to its headquarters, Garden Spot Fire Rescue also operates a West End substation at 624 W. Main St., New Holland, and a Blue Ball substation at 4305 Division Highway, Blue Ball. More than 100 community members are involved in the operation of Garden Spot Fire Rescue, 80 of whom are active running members.

“They’re normal people in the community who volunteer countless hours of time,” said Kopp. “They’re public servants.”

Overseen by a nine-member board of directors, Garden Spot Fire Rescue was formed in 2013

through the merger of the former Liberty Fire Company and the Blue Ball Fire Company. Station 39 maintains and operates 10 pieces of apparatus.

“On any given night of the week, you can find someone doing something at the firehouse,” said Kopp. For additional information, go to https://gsfr39.net.

the run; hills will be featured on School Lane Road during the second mile of both runs.

The fun run, limited to youngsters age 9 and under, will be a circular course around the entire station. The fun run portion of the festivities was new for last year’s event.

Following the run, ambulance “touch-a-truck” opportunities, as well as both a bounce house and a candy drop from a ladder truck, will be available. Safety demonstrations will also be conducted, and the Pennsylvania State Police will stage a helicopter landing.

Food will be available throughout the day. Breakfast will be served from 6:30 to 10 a.m. and will feature sandwiches, along with breakfast bowls and a coffee bar serving lattes and spritzers. Lunch will then be available from 10 a.m. to noon, featuring pulled pork sandwiches, baked beans and fries.

“They do a phenomenal job with it,” Stoltzfus said of the food committee. “It makes it so nice.”

The race will travel south on Route 897 and return on Old Philadelphia Pike.

Runners interested in the race, which will be electronically timed by 2L Race Timing and Services, can register at www.runsignup.com/ Race/PA/Gap/WhiteHorseGallop.

Registration forms may also be picked up at the fire company and at local businesses. To receive a free T-shirt, mailed registrations must be postmarked by Wednesday, April 29. Online registrations will close prior to the race.

Church to Serve Community Meal

The mission committee of the Leacock Presbyterian Church, 3181 Lincoln Highway East, Paradise, will serve a hot meal from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, April 23. Last year, the event had more than 400 runners.

White Horse Fire and EMS Company has answered over 25,000 emergency calls and was established in 1913. The company primarily serves Salisbury Township but also answers calls in outer parts of Leacock and East Earl townships.

Funds raised by this year’s races will help the fire company in the second phase of its building project, which includes dismantling and rebuilding the existing kitchen and dining room, as well as connecting the new structure to the in-progress fire apparatus that will house two engine trucks, a tanker and a utility truck.

The estimated cost for the second phase of the project is $1.65 million. The third phase will house three ambulances, offices for the EMS division and overnight accommodations for White Horse’s volunteer providers.

Stoltzfus said that the committee hopes to raise $50,000 through this year’s gallop - over half of last year’s figure.

“We have exceptional community support,” he said. “We try and do our part in making it worthwhile for people to show up.”

Sponsorships for the run are available, ranging from bronze to elite packages that include opportunities to advertise at the event. More information about sponsorship opportunities can be found by visiting www.runsignup.com/ Race/WhiteHorseGallop/Page-1.

at HOPE International, gave remarks centered around his recently released book, titled “The Way Back to One Another,” which he co-wrote with Jeff Galley and Jill Heisey.

Smith’s book is a seven-chapter, 184-page piece published in March by InterVarsity Press that focuses on studying Scripture and forming deep relationships by undergoing a return to countercultural practices. Attendees at the summit were given a complimentary copy of the work.

Smith’s remarks centered around what he calls a “loneliness epidemic,” quoting statistics that 54% of Americans say that they are lonely at least once a week and that 15% say they are lonely all the time. The figures aren’t better for those involved in the church.

“They’re sobering statistics,” he said. “Across the board, we live in a culture that is lonely. We’re spending less time together ... we are spending half as many hours each week with family and friends than we were 12 years ago.”

Smith addressed the need for community and how leaders could go about building it. Attendees participated in various small-group discussions, sharing anecdotes and relevant experiences.

“It’s not good for you to be alone,” he said. “Woven into our DNA is a need for relationship, a need for community, no matter how much we say, ‘I don’t need it.’”

Smith shared his experiences from living in six different countries across three continents, relating his constant movement to the need to build new relationships in new locations. Smith described his shift from the corporate, financial world to his current pastoral, nonprofit role.

He called on attendees to be intentional about leaning and depending on one another, asking them to build deep relationships with each other instead of bottling up their struggles and emotions, sharing statistics that most adult Americans claim not to have more than three close friends.

“Choose interdependence over independence,” he said. “Our culture loves the idea of independence ... we really do need each other.”

Smith’s tact to approaching the issue is five-pronged: depending on one another, knowing each other, talking to each other, welcoming all and committing to building strong relationships.

Adam Nagle, who serves as the Factory’s executive director, opened and closed Smith’s remarks.

“We exist to empower people, connect to resources and build community,” he said of the Factory. “Imagine a life where you don’t have relationships, or those bridges have been burned ... building community is a key part of what we do.”
