PA Family Travel Fair Is Back BY ANN MEAD ASH
Wendy Royal, editor of Where & When Pennsylvania and organizer of the fourth annual PA Family Travel Fair, knows that if you want to interest families, you need to appeal to children. With that in mind, Royal has lined up a balloon magic show, a few lovable mascots, reptiles, and a special passport game with a prize designed to make children smile for this year’s fair. The fair, which was first held in 2018, was held virtually in 2020 and canceled in 2021 due to COVID-19 restrictions, but for 2022, the free event will include exhibitors, amusements, food See Travel Fair pg 9

atherine O’Sullivan, director of the library in Intercourse, does not know exactly why the library’s name was changed to Pequea Valley Public Library sometime after 2001. But she does know that when a suggestion

was made in 2021 to change the name back to Intercourse Library, the library board responded immediately, unanimously, and positively. The library was started by the Intercourse Lions Club working with the first director, Margie Perella, in 1975. “It was called the
Intercourse Library or Reading Center,” said O’Sullivan. The library operated as a satellite of the Lancaster County Library System, and the Pequea Valley School District gave the Lions permission to use a one-room schoolhouse on the corner of Old Philadelphia Pike and Hollander Road that had been
vacant for many years. The organization was incorporated as a nonprofit on July 25, 1988. In 1997, the library became independent of the county system. “In 2004, a capital campaign was launched to build the present library, which opened at 31 Center St., Intercourse, in 2007,” reported O’Sullivan. Safe Communities in Lancaster and A Better Way of Ohio will present a Child Abuse Prevention seminar to Lancaster County on Friday, April 29, from 1 to 8:30 p.m. and on Saturday, April 30, from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. The seminar will be held at Forest Hills Mennonite Church, 100 Quarry Road, Leola. Both organizations share a mission to prevent child abuse and support survivors in seeking justice and healing, including in Amish and Old Order Mennonite communities. Paradise Rotary Club recently honored the Students of the Month for March. The honorees were juniors Sara Geleta from Conestoga Valley High School, Charlize Ganse from Lancaster Mennonite School and Tre Rosa from Pequea Valley High School. Sara is the daughter of Solomon Geleta and Gete Buli
of Lancaster. She is treasurer for Mock Trial and a member of PoWER, WLA, and SADD. In her sophomore and junior years, she was involved in the drama department and was listed on the honor roll. Outside school, Sara is a Sunday school teacher. Charlize is the daughter of Jeremy and Lisa Ganse of Lititz. She has been listed on the honor roll, and she is a member of National Honor Society and the Junior Class Committee. A field hockey and track team member, Charlize
was an L-L League Section 4 Second Team All-Star. Tre is the son of Ben and Becky Rosa of Gordonville. He is class president, secretary of Student Council, and a member of National Honor Society, the Stage 772 theater group, choir, Chamber Singers, and the Spring Fling committee. He also manages the girls’ basketball team. An FFA member, Tre earned the FFA Greenhand Degree, placed third in the state in the Teach Ag! 2021 essay contest, and earned the YQCA certification.
The Strasburg Senior Citizens will hold their monthly meeting on Wednesday, April 20, from 12:30 to 3 p.m. in the activity hall at the Strasburg Fire Company, 203 W. Franklin St. The meeting will feature musical entertainment by Kerry White, guitarist and vocalist. The club was founded in 1966 and has served the community since then. Sports Hall Of Fame Event Set Susquehanna Valley Chapter of the Pennsylvania Sports Hall of Fame will hold its 43 annual induction banquet on Saturday, May 7, at 6 p.m. The event will take place at Enck’s Banquet and Conference Center, 1461 Lancaster Road, Manheim. The inductees are Albert Ellis Sr., Earl “Buddy” Stoudt, Jerry McDonald, Theodore King, Pete Shellenberger, and Ray Stern. Ellis is being inducted for basketball. At Columbia High School in 1966, he was second team All-County, and his team won Lancaster County Section and District III Class B championships. In 1967, his senior season, he led the county in scoring

Ellis finished his high school career with 913 total points, and his team’s record was a combined 59-10. After high school, Ellis played for the Lancaster Big 5, an amateur team traveling the East Coast. With this team, he won three regional championships, two national championships, and 10 tournament MVP awards. Stoudt is being inducted for football. At Lancaster Catholic High School (LCHS), he was a member of the unbeaten 1956 football team. He was a First Team Central Penn Catholic League All-Star in 1957. Stoudt received a full football scholarship to the University of Richmond, where he set multiple singlegame and single-season records as a senior. Stoudt signed with the Hamilton Tiger-Cats of the

Canadian Football League but was unable to play due to military obligations. He is a member of the LCHS Athletic Hall of Honor, the Richmond Athletic Hall of Fame and the Lancaster County Sports Hall of Fame. McDonald is being inducted for wrestling. A native of Rockaway, N.J., McDonald was two-time district champion and a state bronze medalist. At East Stroudsburg State College, he captured the PSAC gold medal at 145 pounds. He then coached wrestling at Warwick High School from 1975 to 2003, compiling a record of 318-75-2. His teams won 13 section titles and two District III titles. He was District III Coach of the Year in 1980-81. McDonald has been inducted into the Warwick High School Athletic Hall of Fame, East Stroudsburg Hall of Fame, Lancaster-Lebanon Wrestling Hall of Fame, District III Wrestling Hall of

He graduated from Altoona High School and served in the Marine Corps, then played football and swam at Lock Haven State College. King was the first wrestling coach and an assistant football coach at Ephrata High School before coaching football and wrestling at Hempfield High School. His football teams won the 1965 and 1966 Lancaster County championships, and he was 1966 Lancaster County Coach of the Year. King later coached football and wrestling at Millersville State College. At age 47, he died from a heart attack while officiating a wrestling match. Shellenberger is being inducted for soccer. He was four-year starter at Manheim Township High School, where he still holds the current records for career goals (40) and single-season goals (26). He was captain of the 1996 team and garnered First Team All-State, Regional All-American, and Lancaster-Lebanon League MVP honors that year. Shellenberger was inducted into the Manheim Township Athletic Hall of Fame. Shellenberger was a fouryear starter at Penn State University (PSU) and was voted Second Team All-Big Ten in 1997 and 2000. He played professional soccer for the Hershey Wildcats, Reading Rage, and Harrisburg City Islanders.

Intercourse Library from pg 1 The library, which serves Paradise, Salisbury, and Leacock townships, is currently open Mondays through Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. On Mondays through Thursdays, the library reopens from 3 to 7 p.m. On Fridays, the library reopens from 2 to 5 p.m. O’Sullivan explained that the current hours worked well to separate staff members during COVID19 restrictions and that during the mid-day when the library was closed, the staff had time to disinfect and deep-clean the
computers, public spaces, and bathrooms. O’Sullivan also discovered that area residents who visit the library prefer the hours. “I have people who like to be here in the early morning and people who need the evening,” she said. “It seems to be serving its purpose budgetwise (as well).” O’Sullivan also reported that the Salisbury Township Branch Library, located at 835 Houston Run Drive, Gap, is thriving. In March, the library hosted a group of sixth-grade students
during the mid-day hours when the library is closed to the public. “We didn’t have to worry about (using our) ‘library voices,’ and we could do a scavenger hunt,” said O’Sullivan, who noted that the learning experience was especially important to children who had not been able to frequent libraries during COVID-19 restrictions. “We are thinking to expand on that and try to reach out to homeschooling groups and others that might want to use the (the library in the) middle of the
day,” she said. According to O’Sullivan, the majority of board members recall using the Intercourse Library as a child, and many area residents still use the original moniker because that is where the library is located. As of March 8, all the necessary paperwork had been filed to reinstate the name. “Now we are beginning a transition in terms of letting patrons, businesses, and vendors know,” said O’Sullivan. Easter bread is a ring of sweet bread that can be adorned with candy sprinkles. Some people place colorful hardboiled eggs within the twisted dough as well. Traditionally, Pane di Pasqua is made on Good Friday to help break the Lenten fast for Easter. Combine the flour, sugar, and salt in a 16-quart pot. Add the butter and mix by hand, squeezing and merging the butter with the flour mixture. Add proofed yeast to the flour mixture and continue mixing ingredients. 2. Slowly stir in all the beaten eggs and anisette extract using a fork. Continue to mix until ingredients are combined and loose, and dough begins to form. 3 . Knead the dough with floured hands for approximately 45 minutes or until it becomes smooth and elastic. Add flour to the dough if needed or use flour to scrape the dough off hands and the bottom of the pot. 4 . Once the dough is fully kneaded, leave it in the pot, lightly spread some butter over the top to keep it moist, and cover with a cloth. Leave at room temperature to rise for eight hours or overnight. Cut the dough into 7 or 8 smaller dough balls using a sharp knife. Then cut each ball in half. Roll each half into strands approximately 16 inches long. To form a loaf, lay the strands side by side and cross them over at one end, offset by 3 inches. 6 . Continue crossing one strand over the other while working the braid into a circle. The tie-off can be challenging. Join the circle by tucking one end under the other, and pinch the dough firmly together to seal, maintaining the twist and thickness of the loaf. Repeat with the remaining dough. 7. Butter and flour one 9-inch baking pan for each loaf. Place the braided loaves in individual pans and set aside, covered, in a warm, draft-free place for another hour until the dough rises about 30% percent more. 8. At this point, preheat the oven to 250 degrees Fahrenheit. When the dough has risen, place the pans into the oven for about 10 minutes and then raise the temperature to 325 degrees. Bake until the bread is a dark golden brown and makes a hollow sound when lightly tapped on the bottom. 9. Prepare the egg wash for decorating by beating the egg yolks with the water in a small bowl, and set the mixture aside. 10. When the bread loaves are fully baked, remove them from the oven and pan using oven mitts, and decorate them immediately. Brush the egg wash onto the hot surface of each loaf and sprinkle with the nonpareils. Set the loaves to cool on racks. When it is time to consume the bread, slice a wedge and spread with butter.

With the likes of upperclassmen Jamison Castor, Dylan Ratjavong and Jazae Itegi along with freshmen like Hayden Winey and Cole Stoltzfus, the Pequea Valley boys’ tennis team is off to a great start this spring. The Braves improved to 4-0 in the Lancaster-Lebanon League with victories over Annville Cleona and Northern Lebanon, followed by a 3-2 defeat of Lampeter-Strasburg, which improved the team’s overall mark to 7-0 on the year. On Friday, April 1, the match at Annville opened with a tough battle featuring the Braves’ doubles team of Itegi and Wade Stoltzfus going against Sam Demenic and Alec Verhagen of A-C. In the end, the Braves prevailed 9-7. Cole Stoltzfus and Samuel Arena pulled off a tight 8-5 win at second doubles followed by an 8-2 win by Joel Peifer and Cole McEvoy. Wade Stoltzfus was a straight sets winner at number one singles (6-3, 6-1) with Itegi taking the second singles by the same scores. Winey won 7-5, 6-2 at number three singles with Peifer closing out the 7-0 victory with 7-6, 6-2 wins at fourth singles. The Braves returned to their home courts after the weekend to drop Northern Lebanon 7-0 on Monday, April 4. Winey and Cole Stoltzfus
claimed the first doubles match 8-4. Peifer and Castor blanked their opponents 8-0 while Ratjavong and fellow senior Regan Thomas were dominant in their 8-1 win at number three doubles. The singles matches all ended in straight set victories with Wade Stoltzfus winning 6-2, 6-0, Castor posting 6-1, 6-2 wins followed by Ratjavong’s 6-1, 6-4 triumphs and Thomas wrapping it up 63, 6-2. In the 3-2 non-league win at Lampeter-Strasburg, the two squads split the two doubles matches. Peifer and Cole Stoltzfus edged Jack Harnish and Kyle Pawson 6-4, 7-6. The L-S twosome of Joe Fitzgerald and Chad Royer edged Castor and Ratjavong 7-6, 6-3. Izegi’s 6-2, 6-2 straight sets win at number two singles and Winey’s strong effort (75, 6-3) at number three singles gave PV the win. The Braves improved to 8-0 with their 6-1 defeat of Elco on Wednesday, April 6. It all began with a tough battle between the twosome of Wade Stoltzfus and Itegi facing Elco’s Jaydon Grumbine and Trevor Spang. The battle ended with an 8-6 PV victory. Winey and Cole Stoltzfus won 8-3 while Arena and Peifer came up short in an 8-6 third doubles. Wade Stoltzfus (6-4, 6-2) and Cole Stoltzfus (6-2, 7-6) won the first and fourth singles. Both Itegi and Winey won their singles matches 62, 6-2.

BASEBALL In a pitchers’ duel that went into extra innings, the Braves lost 2-1 to the Eastern York Golden Knights on Saturday, April 2, at Kinzers. Pequea Valley senior Dylan Knott went the distance, allowing two runs on only two base hits while striking out 10 Knights. “Dylan pitched a great game,” head coach Carl Langley remarked. “He only threw 82 pitches in eight innings. “He was throwing a lot of strikes,” continued the coach. “Even when they were putting the bat on the ball, we were playing great defense.” Eastern York pushed across the eventual winning run in the top of the eighth inning. The two sides finished seven innings knotted at 1-1. The Braves had six hits on the day, including a 2-for-3 day at the plate for Cristian Smucker as well as for fellow junior Ezekiel Hershey Jayden Stoltzfus (1-for-4) scored the game-tying run for Pequea in the fourth inning. Monday afternoon, April 4, went into the books as another 2-1 final, this one with the Braves winning in walk-off fashion. They had the game-winning rally with two outs. “Our first two batters made outs,” Langley explained. “Nick Ammon singled up the middle; Peyton Temple singled and Gavin was safe on a fielder’s choice. “Dylan Knott got a walk-off single and the kids stormed the field,” Langley continued. “You would have thought we won states.” Pequea Valley improved to 2-3 on the year (1-1 league) with what Langley considered a significant walk-off win over the league rival Dutchmen. “What a great game that was,” he said. “The boys played very focused. “Annville-Cleona and Lancaster Catholic are going to be our toughest competition this year,” continued the coach. “Winning this game was significant especially given that they beat us twice last year.” Eby earned the victory for the Braves, tossing a complete game four-hitter and recording six strikeouts. “Gavin Eby pitched probably the best game I’ve seen him throw,” said Langley. “We scored early. We had two men on, and Jaden Stoltzfus bunted to move the runners. Nick Ammon singled to drive in one.” Knott not only recorded the
game-winning hit, the 6-foot2 senior first baseman’s defense kept the game tied at 1-1, thus enabling his final atbat heroics. “In the top of the seventh with one out, their leadoff hitter hit a line drive and Dylan Knott - with full extension - made a play for the highlight reel,” Langley remarked. SOFTBALL The Pequea Valley softball team faced a pair of tough L-L League opponents in the opening week of the 2022 season. The Braves came up short in a 16-7 loss at home to Lancaster Catholic on Wednesday, March 30. Madison Clark went 2-for-4
plus a walk and scored two runs. Freshman Victoria Smoker slugged two doubles and drove in two runs while Camryn Bailey stroked a tworun single. The following Monday, Annville-Cleona’s offense exploded with two big innings late in the game, earning the Dutchmen an 18-8 win. “Our pitching is young with very limited experience, so they’re struggling to find consistency,” said head coach Doug High. Smoker had another twohit game against Annville, going 2-for-3 with one RBI. Chavelle Fisher had two singles and two RBI’s plus a walk and a run scored.

Cruisin’ For Ukraine

Like many people, Bob Rudy watched the events unfolding in Ukraine and wanted to help. “I wanted to fly over there and carry children and pets to safety,” he recalled saying to his wife, Debra, while watching the news one evening. “This obviously wasn’t a brilliant decision, so my wife suggested using the talents and resources I have right here at home to help out.” Inspired by his love for music and cars, Rudy organized Cruisin’ for Ukraine. The event will be held at Root’s Country Market and Auction, 705 Graystone Road, Manheim, on Saturday, April 23. Although Rudy had the idea, he knew he needed help to make it happen. “Putting a car show together isn’t something an individual can do,” he noted, adding that he recruited his fellow members of a local car club to help. “I couldn’t possibly do it without my brothers and sisters in the Lancaster County Cruisers.” Registration for the show will be by donation and will take place at the event. Registration will begin at 9 a.m., and dash plaques will be given to the first 200 vehicles registered. More than 30 trophies will be awarded in the “Anything on Wheels” category, based on the highest amount of donations submitted, and all proceeds will be donated to the Mennonite Central Committee to help the people of Ukraine. The event is a family show, and children are encouraged to enter their own vehicles, including pedal cars or Power
Wheels. Family pets will also be included in the festivities, with trophies for the three highest donations in both the kids’ and pet categories. The J.C. Fisher Band will perform from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. The presentation of trophies will take place at 2 p.m. Rudy acknowledged the support of Root’s Market for allowing the
event to take place on-site and noted that a variety of the market’s vendors will be available during the show. Rudy encouraged participants to show their support for the Ukrainian people by displaying flags, signs and banners. An additional trophy will be awarded for the entry that shows the most support.

CDS Volunteer Workshop Set Children’s Disaster Services (CDS) will offer a workshop to train volunteers on Friday, May 13, and Saturday, May 14. The workshop will be held at Lititz Church of the Brethren, 300 W. Orange St., Lititz. CDS has been meeting the
needs of children since 1980, working cooperatively with FEMA and the American Red Cross to provide care for children and families following disasters. On World Down Syndrome Day, Gigi’s encouraged participants with Down syndrome and their families to wear mismatched socks to celebrate. World Down Syndrome Day is held on the 21st day of the third month because individuals with Down syndrome have three copies of their 21st chromosome. Because the chromosomes resemble socks, wearing mismatched socks is a way to spread awareness and acceptance of Down Syndrome. “Everything we offer is designed to work in the ways that people with Down syndrome learn best,” explained Hewitt. “But everybody is welcome,” she added, noting that siblings of Gigi’s participants often come to the venue. “We

have others with special needs participate in our programs (as well),” she said. Gigi’s Playhouse, a Down Syndrome Achievement Center located at 2503 Oregon Pike, Lancaster, added some special activities to its already robust schedule to celebrate World Down Syndrome Day on March 21. Activities included a taco party with karaoke in the evening and purposeful programing with an emphasis on helping others during the day. A little before noon, Fantastic Friends, who are adult participants with Gigi’s, gathered around a table to dip pretzel sticks in molten chocolate to create brightly hued and tasty treats. The melted chocolate was col-
ored bright blue and yellow, which are the Down syndrome colors. Christine Hewitt, site coordinator with the Lancaster Gigi’s, explained that the pretzels would be delivered to the Manheim Township Police station later in the day. “A couple of us are about to leave and go hand out some gift cards and put money at vending machines as a few random acts of kindness,” said Hewitt, who was gathering adult participants to join her. According to Hewitt, Gigi’s offers nine different monthly programs, which add up to about 35 hours of programming a week. “This morning we had GiGiFIT Toddlers here,” said Hewitt, who added that 1:1 literacy tutoring is also offered throughout the week. About 200 area families take part in Gigi’s programming. The Playhouse opened

Friendship Community Chooses New CEO Friendship Community has announced Mary Ellen Farber as its new chief executive officer (CEO). Farber was scheduled to officially join Friendship Community on March 22, replacing Gwen Schuit, former CEO, who retired at the end of November 2021. Farber holds an MBA and completed doctorate-level coursework in organizational leadership through Eastern University. She is also a licensed personal care administrator, assisted living administrator and nursing home administrator. She most recently served as CEO for more than 12 years at another faith-based, nonprofit organization whose mission is to serve individuals with intellectual disabilities. Friendship Community is a faith-based organization cultivating capabilities of individuals with intellectual disabilities and autism in Lancaster and Lebanon counties since 1972. The organization offer an arts day program, a home-based services program, Lifesharing and 24 residential homes serving a total of over 150 individuals in the two counties.
