WhenElizabeth Hoover, who is a youth center director with The Factory Ministries along with Micah Lehman, talks about taking students who participate in open door nights at the ministry to Camp Orchard Hill, you can hear the excitement in her voice. “It was a really powerful weekend chatting with them … encouraging and praying for them,” said Hoover, who noted the group that visited the camp from March 3 through 5 included 58 students and 12 leaders. “We had quite the crew,” she added.
Supporting families of children with special needs
BY ANN MEAD ASH
“We want to work ourselves out of business,” said Tara Kelley, director of disability ministry with Handi-Vangelism Ministries International (HVMI). “We want to equip others to be able to do this because we can’t be everywhere.” To that end, HVMI offers a variety of support and training services to churches, educators, and especially families of children and adults with special needs.
According to Hoover, the theme this year was “Through the Fire.”
“That (resonated) with a lot of the kids,” reported Hoover, who noted, “We were able to (ask), ‘What are the fires you’re walking through right now? What are the struggles and trials you’re facing?’” Hoover said that theme gave students the opportunity to share trials they are dealing with during small group time, where leaders could assure them that God is by their sides and walking through the fire with them.
Camp Orchard Hill, located in Dallas, Pa., offers a Winter Blast Camp each year that provides a variety of activities designed for
teenagers to enjoy. Among these are basketball, volleyball, glow 9 Square in the Air, and challenges such as stacking decks of cards. A highlight of this year’s camp was snow tubing and building snowmen. “There was snow Friday evening,” recalled Hoover. “A lot of our teens would say the tubing and sledding were their favorite activities.” Because students are kept busy with planned activities, the leaders have the opportunity to focus on relationship building. “We have conversations while the camp plans everything, and that’s such a gift to us,” said Hoover. The speaker for the weekend was Josh Ott, and Kevi Morse was the rapper.
“The kids loved him,” said Hoover. “He shared very personal songs based on his experiences.”
Hoover shared a number of quotes from participants. “I learned about growing closer to God and connecting with the leaders,” said one attendee. Another student said, “I learned that God is there no matter what and can connect people to one another in a short amount of time.” A third said, “I learned that God will be with me no matter how severe the circumstances,” and another noted. “I learned that no matter how far I stray from God, there’s still a place for me in His heart.”
Once a month, HVMI gives parents of children with special needs an opportunity to spend time in the company of others who understand through the P arents In Progress (PIP) support group, which meets at the HVMI offices at 600 Chestnut St., Ephrata, every second Monday beginning at 7 p.m. PIP is facilitated by HVMI founder Tim Sheetz, and it is open to parents of children of all ages with a range of disabilities. Sheetz has been working with families since 1973, and he is acutely aware of their needs. “As the child grows older, who will take care of the child?” noted Sheetz. “That is a huge (concern).” He added that the group gives parents a safe space to talk. “The parents understand each other, and they can feel free to say what is going on and feel supported,” he said.

Starting a string of three games in three straight days, the Pequea Valley baseball team opened the week with a 2-0 shutout of Columbia on Monday, April 3, in a Lancaster-Lebanon League game at Kinzers.
Scattering seven hits, including a double by Cooper Marley, Pequea junior Myles Furlong went the distance.
Furlong did not allow a walk but did record nine strikeouts in the seven-hit shutout.
Furlong didn’t need a great deal of offense on this day.
Jayden Stoltzfus and Logan Zynn each scored a run in the two-run fifth inning for the
Braves. Peyton Temple went 2-for-2 with a double.
The very next afternoon the Braves’ team bus traveled to New Holland where Pequea played Garden Spot.
Connor Manning and Caleb Zimmerman each drove in three runs as the Spartans won this game 10-4.
The visiting Braves did score first, putting up a pair of runs in the top of the first inning, only to have Garden Spot plate five runs in the home half of the first frame.
The Braves chopped one run off that deficit with a run in the second, only to spot Spot three more runs in the third.
Furlong, Stoltzfus and Zeke
Hershey each hit a double with Hershey, Stoltzfus, Zynn and freshman Elijah Smucker each driving in a run. Hershey went 2-for-3 with a run and an RBI.
The Braves improved to 5-2 on the year with a decisive 135 victory at Lancaster Mennonite on Wednesday. Hershey’s bases-clearing double was one of the big hits on the day as the senior finished with four runs batted in and one run scored. Temple went 3-for-4 with two runs scored and two knocked in.
With a single and two walks, Furlong also stole three bases and scored two runs. Speaking of swiping bags, Temple had four steals.
The impressive offensive stats largely came from a seven-run first inning for Pequea.
The run support was mainly for Zynn, who went five innings and struck out five.
Sophomore Stephen Smucker tossed two innings, giving up four earned runs while striking out four batters.
SOFTBALL
The Braves dominated Lancaster Mennonite in softball as head coach Doug High’s lineup won 15-0 on Wednesday, April 5.
“We had a nice east wind win,” High stated. “It was a nice win. We didn’t have any errors. We were very patient at the plate.”
The major offensive force in the lineup was Maddy Clark.
“She had a grand slam and drove in seven runs,” High explained. She also found the gap with a long, bases-clearing double that accounted for three Braves runs.
Also, Lilly Stike was 2-for-2 with a double and a single. Izzy Graham had a hit and scored a run. Olivia Clark scored three runs, reaching
base on a hit and two walks.
The Braves improved their record to 3-2 in this shortened game, due to the mercy rule.
Maddy Hassis went two innings for the Braves. Senior Mackenzie Musser came in to pitch the third inning.
“She’s a senior who has had arm issues,” High said. “Getting her an inning was a good chance. It went well.”
Musser faced only four batters in an easy wrap-up inning. Clark had one strikeout and two walks.
With their 3-2 record, the Braves prepare for a week that will take them on the road three times - Annville-Cleona, Northern Lebanon and Lancaster Catholic.
BOYS TENNIS
The Braves had an impressive 7-0 victory over L-L League rival Octorara on Wednesday afternoon, April
5, winning all three doubles matches by an 8-0 score.
Wade Stoltzfus and Cole Stoltzfus claimed the first doubles with Hayden Winey and Joel Peifer taking the second match. In the third doubles it was Jackson Hershey teaming up with Bailey Scott.
In the first two singles matches, Wade Stoltzfus and Cole Stoltzfus downed their respective opponents in straight sets. Winey came through 6-0, 6-0 at the third singles and Peifer triumphed 60, 6-1 at number four singles.
The victory improved the Braves’ mark to 6-1 (4-1 league) on the year.
Pequea was coming off a 61 defeat of Donegal the previous afternoon - a makeup match from last week.
Wade and Cole Stoltzfus lost a close first doubles 8-5 to Akilan Murugesan and Landon Keller of Donegal.
At number two doubles as well as the third doubles, the pairings of Winey and Cole McEvoy (8-4) and Peifer and Scott (8-4) were winners.
In singles play, Stoltzfus and Stoltzfus were both winners as were Winey and McEvoy.
Pequea’s dominant week began with a 7-0 defeat of Northern Lebanon on the road Monday, April 3. In the shutout effort, the pair of Stoltzfus teammates blanked their Viking opponents 8-0 Winey and McEvoy made off with an 8-1 win at second doubles while Peifer and Scott cruised to an 8-0 win.
The singles matches were all won on straight sets - 6-1, 6-0 for Wade Stoltzfus; 6-1 60 for Cole Stoltzfus; and identical scores for Winey and McEvoy for the third and fourth singles.

The cost to send a student to Winter Blast is $155. Hoover said she was grateful to know that the trip was fully funded before the group left for Camp Orchard Hill. “We are so thankful for everyone coming together and believing in what could happen on a weekend like this,” said Hoover, who noted that Winter Blast gives students a chance to “disconnect from their dayto-day life and experience a weekend they won’t soon forget.” “It’s really cool because these memories made (in a few days) will continue for years,” she said.

To help families, educators, and church leaders work with children with ADHD and autism, Kelley presents “The ABCs of Bringing Out the Best in Children
With ADHD,” a three-hour seminar that is not strictly focused on children. “It covers anyone with ADHD,” she said. “It’s for people … who need the really practical
tips of what to do in daily life to help include children with the challenges associated with ADHD.” She also pointed out that the program may be useful to Sunday school teachers and ministry workers, who may not have training in education. “There are basic teaching techniques that can be helpful to anyone in an instruction setting,” she said.
Sheetz said that reaching out to faith leaders has long been the mission of HVMI. “The idea of the ministry was to alert the church to the need,” he said. “The church may not be equipped to handle the needs of a child with a disability.” However, a welcoming faith community is what families who have members with special needs may need most. “I (have) asked, ‘What is the greatest need?’” shared Sheetz, who noted that the answer is “acceptance” by both extended and church families. He pointed out that of the 35 miracles Jesus performed, 26 involved people with disabilities.
“As Jesus was doing these miracles, the disciples were behind him, and they would be getting the churches started,” Sheetz said. “The heart of the Lord to them was, ‘We have people here with great needs. Include them.’”
Dan Steinman of HVMI visits faith communities to represent the ministry and offer to come alongside them in helping to support families with special needs. “We are always looking for the right place to start a group,” he said. “If a church is willing, we can help get it started.”
More information about seminars and other supports that HVMI offers may be found at www.hvmi.org/trainingequipping or by calling 717-859-4777.

Registration open for IU13 conference
BY ADRIAN ESCHENWALD
Lampeter-Strasburg High School, 1600 Book Road, Lancaster, will host the 27th annual Lancaster-Lebanon Intermediate Unit 13 (IU13) education conference on Wednesday, June 21, from 7:45 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Registration will be available on a first-come-first-serve-basis until Friday, June 9, and an early bird discount will be offered to school district and agency personnel who register before Monday, May 1. To register, visit www.iu13.com.
This year, the theme of the conference is “Agents of Change … Mission Possible.” The conference advocates for academic, social and behavioral growth in students by offering educational resources for parents and teachers alike. The organization hopes to shape students into productive citizens and prepare them for success in academic and professional pursuits.
At 8:40 a.m., keynote speaker Shelley Moore will explore the topic of inclusion and how it relates to educators. Moore holds a bachelor’s degree in special education from the University of Alberta, a master’s degree from Simon Fraser University and a doctorate from the University of British Columbia. She has collaborated with school districts and community organizations worldwide to promote inclusion in classrooms.
Morning breakout sessions will be held from 10 a.m. to noon, and afternoon breakout sessions will occur from 1 to 3 p.m. The sessions will focus on different aspects of education to assist administrators, special educators, general educators, substitute teachers and parents of students.

and leveled texts, techniques for educating students with autism spectrum disorder and how to creatively engage students with technology in the classroom. In the afternoon sessions, speakers will tackle issues such as managing exhaustion in both teachers and students, creating a safe environment for a diverse range of students and how to use innovative disciplinary practices. Presenters will include education consultants, social workers, teachers and psychologists.
When IU13 first began to host the conference, it primarily focused on special education topics, but the organization decided to broaden the scope of subjects to include more areas of the schooling world. “A lot of conferences are geared towards a specific group, such as teachers or parents. This conference encompasses everyone; everyone can attend and find something relevant in a session,” said Linda Murr, program support liaison for IU13.
This will be the first IU13 education conference held since 2019, due to the cancellation of the event in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. “A lot of people have been asking about when the event will happen again over the past few years,” Murr said. “We’re very excited to be bringing the conference back.”
For more information, call Murr at 717-606-1878.

Exploring abandoned places
BY ANN MEAD ASH
There is a lure in places where humans once lived and worked. Those who venture to these abandoned domiciles may wonder about the people who once inhabited the ruins, asking themselves questions about how they lived and why they left. Those explorers often take photos to share with other lessadventurous fellow humans. Matthew Christopher is just such an explorer.
According to Christopher, author of “Abandoned America: Dismantling the Dream” and “Abandoned America: The Age of Consequences,” his interest in places that have been left to themselves began as a child, but he only started documenting abandoned sites about a decade ago when he was researching the decline of the state hospital system. Feeling the state hospitals were too important to America’s history to ignore, Christopher sought to preserve their legacy. That mission grew into an effort to chronicle other abandoned places, which has grown to include a website and a podcast, along with his books.
On Thursday, April 20, at 7 p.m., Christopher will come to Garden Spot Village, 433 S. Kinzer Ave., New Holland, as part of the New Holland Area Historical Society’s (NHAHS) April meeting. Christopher’s presentation will share his journeys through some of America’s “most haunting ruins.” According to Christopher, his program will include photos of abandoned malls, amusement parks, churches, factories, and homes, and he will share the “stories of how these places were left behind and separate fact from fiction when it comes to their past.”
Christopher’s websitewww.abandonedamerica.usprovides evidence of his efforts to log the histories of a variety of abandoned places both in the U.S. and abroad. They include hotels, prisons, research facilities, neighborhoods, and industrial sites.
“Mostly I find (abandoned places) through research, networking, and dumb luck,” said Christopher, who has explored well-known places abroad, such as Chernobyl and ruins in Greece, as well as in the U.S.
Christopher has a Master’s degree in Fine Art Photography from Rochester Institute of Technology, and he has taught photography at a college level.
